My review copy of Gibson's Alien 3 arrived, so we've got the title and author of the next novel and it's an AvP one by a controversial figure...I'm currently struggling my way through a re-read of Forever Midnight. But fortunately, his last foray into Predator (in If It Bleeds) was a solid one.
Is this the book you implied that you knew was coming, or is that one still on the cards?
Oh dear. Steel Egg was also... not good.
More AvP books is fine by me
Also, wasn't Annihilation sub-title in one of Anderson's AvP drafts ?
His proposed sequel yeah.

Yay, more AVP!
Oh boy the guy that wrote Forever Midnight. Can someone from here provide the guy some support just in case? Is SM still doing it ?

Why are you trying to punish yourself like that?

Indeed. And Steel Egg suprisily had a good portrayal of the aliens, with them being outnumbered by the humans and still destroying them, you don't see that often in the EU.
At least there is still the AvP Anthology coming.
Where the f**k is SM?
Taking a prolonged vacation ?
Very much alive -- although undergoing lockdown number 6 or 7 at this point.
But isn't it like a hiatus anyway? I mean he must have internet, even with the lockdown.

Because RidgeTop kept claiming "it wasn't that bad" so we're revisiting it for a podcast and so I can finally start writing an article I've been planning to do all year. But with the effort it's taking, I've decided the next time we just do a random book/comic episode, it's one I know I f**king love.

I remember enjoying one or two death sequences in Steel Egg, otherwise it was just as low a point for Alien as Forever Midnight was for Predator as far as I remember.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this one turned out.

So the idea that person can get tired of AvPG and maybe needs a break for a while never crossed your mind ? The fact he has internet doesn't mean he's obligated to use it

My mind loves the internet. And it won't let me stay far away for too long.
But then again, maybe I see it very simple, from my gaze of someone without many responsibilities other than myself (as children for example). And yeah, of course it always crosses my mind, but since they mentioned that SM was absent cos lockdowns, which doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to talk here, I always thought it was more of a personal break.
Okay, I won't keep derailing the thread.
Excited but also a bit hesitant of John Shirley. Still pleased that we're getting more AVP content as it's been few and far between the last few years.

And I'm the innocent bystander in all this.

No, let's not read Predator Turnabout... or Predator South China Sea from the same guy who wrote Annihilation which was adapted into the Natalie Portman film. No, let's read Forever Midnight! ;D

Yep, Jeff VanderMeer's only foray in our A&P fandom.
To be fair, Shirley has also written for film. He wrote The Crow, multiple awards for writing. It's just his early take on the Alien and Predators were just too wild. Like I mentioned earlier, his short in If It Bleeds was good from what I remember. Hopefully this one will be too!

Don't you dare give Shirley credit for The Crow, sir! That was adapted from a comic book by James O'Barr. I own this graphic novel!

Annihilation on the otherhand was an entirely original work. It was his novel, that was adapted for a film.
But I concur, still hoping for the best! :) 🤞
I see you're a big fan of Natalie Portman, Vodoo ;)

Not a big fan, actually. But I can say I like Natalie more than Winona Ryder! :)

Considering how many adaptations are complete messes, and how generally loved
The Crow is, I'd say he deserves plenty of credit for a job well done.

Well, Shirley's "The Crow" script was re-written by David Schow, but sure, anyone who has worked on a film, especially one perceived favorably, generally deserves credit. Absolutely! But as an O'Barr reader a long time ago, I couldn't help caveating here. :)
Yes it is known you do not like Winona Ryder for some bizarre reason.
*whispers* 'cause she was in Resurrection
I'm aware.
Haha, no.
I don't know if it's bizarre per say - I'm not suggesting it's a popular opinion but I also know I'm not the only one - but I do personally struggle with her acting performances, delivery, subtlety, etc.. I'm just not her biggest fan. :)
I don't mind her but not her biggest fan either. Other than Resurrection I think I've only seen her in Burton's movies - she was good in these
Random thought - what Alien Resurrection would've been like directed by Tim Burton ?

Shirley didn't write the Annihilation novel, that was VanderMeer.
No, I refuse. >:(
Shirley wrote the Doom movie novelisation I read on a plane once lol, so I have no opinion of him as a writer either way.
Given the title, this isn't PWSA's unmade sequel in book form is it?
Just confirmed it, this was an adaptation of the anime.

Wow! So that probably means the novel is completed and shelved. They really need to release this anime!
Quote from: Corporal Hicks on Aug 07, 2023, 09:05:10 AMJust confirmed it, this was an adaptation of the anime.
Oh crap... I remember hearing the name
Annihilation floating around in regards to an AVP novel a couple years back (it popped into my mind again when the anime was revealed to have had that title), but I assumed that was more just coincidence than anything. I also had no clue that the
Annihilation novel never actually came out.
Was a synopsis for this book ever released? Or, erm, leaked?
The timing of this is also pretty interesting. We know the anime was both commissioned and later killed all during the Fox era, but Cadigan's
Alien 3 novel that this book was first teased in released in 2021, well into the Disney era. So someone in the relatively recent past had tried dusting
Annihilation (if not the anime itself, at least its story) off, before it got snuffed out again...
