Title: Ahab Predator Cosplay [by InkFxTion Studios/Christopher Du-Bois]
Post by: AhabPredator on Feb 25, 2019, 01:39:32 PM
Since my first thread still has pictures of my original cosplay build when I was making it myself, I'm going to have that thread locked by Hicks and have this new thread be the future of the build with Christopher making it now. I'll include progress shots of how the build came to be and the finished product when complete. I will also do an unboxing video once I receive it! Any comments are questions are welcome.

So why Ahab you my ask? Why choose an obscure comic book predator to cosplay? This is why.

That would probably be ill advised for the latex. Not sure how any kind of  gloss would do on the stuff. My guess it would get sticky, tacky, and crack/peel. I'm sure some clever photo editing could win the day.

I think it's great when fans turn their love to these franchises into something material, something you can see and touch. Great work!

Thank you! I'm not making it. Those skills are beyond me, but I will be the owner/funding source of said project. From comic pages to real life, this predator is brought to life by Christopher Du-Bois! Aka InkFxTion Studios. Check out his Facebook page...hugely impressive work.

There won't be a content update for a bit from Christopher. In the mean while, I've been building Ahab's spear.

The blade on the end is being made from wood by a friend of mine on another forum.

That looks rather thick. I hope that wooden blade isn't too heavy for you. I'd imagine it will make the spear incredibly top heavy.

The spear is very light, but extremely durable. The wood will be thinned out a lot more. It won't be too heavy. I am built strong, thankfully.

I sent him my body measurements and he advised I should be fine. So I have to take him at his word. Worst case, I lose weight. Which I'm working on doing anyways, so this could be more motivation.

The mask is stunning. Just like the rest of the costume. The movies usually have the unmasked head and the masked head as two separate pieces. So do you think it'll work out okay with having the mask over the head? Actually, how the hell will you be able to see, even without the mask?

You cut the eye out so your eye can see through. You only get one eye. The biomask is held in place with embedded magnets. The eye slots for the biomask have black mesh like the original (not pictured here).

I'll have to have a handler and special effects operator since I have a leather pouch on my hip that contains a speaker/subwoofer. It's paired with my phone so I get all the sound effects for predator.

Don't misunderstand. They do exceptional work too. But I think they lack...the passion? Or creativity? Something is missing. I can't put my finger on it.

Easy, Voodoo. You can go to the end of the leash and bark. But if you bite someone, then we get in trouble.

But really though, I'm not sure what is up with the designs. I know they can do a lot better. But why don't they? Money? Time? I guess we'll never know.

I really wish Alec from ADI answered the Old One's mandible question on his recent AvPG Podcast appearance. But he basically dismissed it, which didn't help when the question was dismissed by RidgeTop when he was asking it.

So still, *sigh* no answers.  :-\

I wonder how they would feel about the work Christopher does in comparison to theirs. I mean, I wouldn't want to draw too much attention to him...but at the same time, I think if they saw what an amateur is capable of, it would be a wakeup call.

They'd probably admire the talent and dedication of a fellow creature effects artist.

And that's about it.

Voodoo,

How often do those pros get interviewed here? Granted I haven't been around long enough to experience those.

Do you know what the Predator interviews that Hicks was talking about were for?

I was curious to see what those develop as. Hopefully they will be interesting.

The talk was specifically for The Predator. You can try to contact Alec or Tom online, they're fairly approachable.

Yes, indeed when Hicks & RidgeTop talked to Alec @ ADi, the timing was for The Predator, but the podcast interview did cover a range of topics outside of Shane Black's masterpiece.  ;)

I do have to correct my earlier statement. Hicks asked the mandible question and asked it legitimately. It was RidgeTop later chiming in dismissing Old One's question as a "little nitpicky". I hate when my memory fails me!

I would have loved to learn if and why ADI thinks the parallel mandibles a.k.a. broken jaw / slack-jawed design looks better in their eyes than Stan Winston's design. Can ADI realize it's more than a change in teeth, but jaw and facial structure? Can they put themselves in the perspective of a Predator fan and recognize it as a drastic change they made to the Predator's look? And what does ADI consider when duplicating an iconic creature in a film franchise, what features should carry on, to stay respectul to what came before it?

Maybe, in all fairness, the question needed to be framed better.

Go to 50:13 in the podcast below and you can hear the mandible question.

The Alien requires a Carapace, Alec Gillis.

Good answer though, (bad) creative decision.

Wish the praise regarding the Alien³ design and the rest transpired.  ???

Alec says "why do they still need to look the same?". That's not saying theirs is better - just that it's theirs.

Indeed it's theirs. A finished ADI Predator can be recognized immediately. For better or worse, they have certainly put their "stamp" on it.

Then it goes to their philosophy. What does ADI consider when duplicating an iconic creature in a film franchise. What features do they feel should carry on, to stay respectul to what came before it?  I'd be interested in hearing that answer, because they've done more than change teeth.

I go to the comics, even the City Hunter in "Predator 2" and realize you can put your own stamp on things with alternative colors, general shape variations, tattoos, scars, wounds, jewelry and dread design without changing its core facial musculature.

I'm not a fan of that style of Wolf. The one in your display pic would be a great one to see him do. But alas, the others are custom suits he has done. I think the Elder at the bottom and the albino are probably the best from that lot.

Yes. Look closely. His top left mandible (our right) is missing. He also has the black crest ridges on his 10-head (forehead). Only Predator to date to have those crown like ridges. Last but not least his iconic facial scarring and blinded eye.

Yep. Ironically I passionately dislike the result of how Wolf turned out in AvP-R, but I do like the concept and Wolf with his biomask on, but this Wolf bust from Sideshow is so wild and crazy looking, so damaged goods, it seemed to fit my personality.   ;D

Plus the mandibles on the Sideshow bust look like they close in an X!!!

Yep, the stylized pic of the bust I used looks like it is growling and will close in the X position. And the bust has the diagonal brows too!

You know what's ironic? Alec equated ADI's broken jaw mandibles to the Jungle Hunter and City Hunter mandibles as someone having "different teeth" and therefore why does it need to be like the first two movies.

Yet, using that logic, the three movies ADI created has featured Predators with the exactly the same teeth, so I ask ADI with their third film "The Predator", why does the mandibles need to be like ADI's first two movies?

After three films, I truly believe this look is just ADI's preference, their stamp, and most of the die hard Predator fans are forced to deal with it.  :-\

How often do those pros get interviewed here? Granted I haven't been around long enough to experience those.

There's no set schedule. If something new is coming out I'll try and talk to the people behind it after release. Sometimes they reply to me, sometimes they don't. How many I do tends to depend on my own enthusiasm for the project. I had a bunch more possibilities for The Predator but I'm not sure I can be arsed.

Alec we'll be talking to again at some point. A more generalized Alien/Predator one.

He is not the first to leave for something like that.
