Boy, am I ever tired of seeing statements like the following:
- "Predator fans despise the Yautja."
- "Everyone knows Alien is the best film in the series."
- "Only an idiot could enjoy Alien Resurrection."
- "It's obvious to true fans that Predators are superior to Aliens."
These are just a few simple examples. In the interest of making a better forum with fewer jackholes in it, I invite everyone to always remember:
- You do not speak for anyone but yourself.
- You do not speak for "true fans" or "people who really care." Everybody here is a true fan, or else they wouldn't be here. Everyone cares, or else they wouldn't be here.
- As soon as you're starting to say "We all know" or "everyone knows that this movie/creature/idea rocked/sucked," stop yourself. Who is WE? You don't know EVERYONE, do you? Stop. Don't disagree, because I promise you absolutely do not. There is only YOU. "We all" don't know anything of the kind. Not everyone believes that Predator 2/AVP/Alien Resurrection were pieces of shit. Not everyone hates the directors responsible. Not everyone thinks that the Strauses are automatically superior to, say, Stephen Hopkins just because they're not Stephen Hopkins. We haven't seen their movie yet. We don't know how their movie will be. We can only hope.
- If you start to mockingly say that you know what the "vast majority" thinks, consider this: You can't. You can't know what the wider public thinks. You can know what this board thinks. That's it. You MIGHT know what many Internet sites think. Maybe. If you're really visiting that many. You DO NOT know what humanity as a whole thinks about anything. The Internet is not a valid random sample of the majority. Case in point: Star Wars Episode I. That movie made so much money that people obviously went back to see it again and again and again and again, or else it's just impossible. It also got a standing freaking ovation at my midnight premiere. And yet most of the Internet hates it. Does that mean most of the WORLD hates it? Based on the repeat business and the huge DVD sales... well, apparently not.
Remember these simple instructions, and you'll be a friendlier board member and much less of a dick to people around you. Don't condescend, and remember: Your opinions are YOUR opinions.
Now go have fun discussing the things that WE ALL love. And don't turn into a bastard if someone disagrees.

Opinions are not "reality." I haven't seen what you're saying myself, but I HAVE seen someone say that Alien 3 and Aliens are both better than Alien, and that same person call Alien "boring." Now, I don't get that. But his opinion is equally valid as mine or yours.

That it's annoying when people say "the majority of the world hates AVP" or "everyone knows Alien is the best alien film ever" because both are false. The Majority of the world's view on AVP isn't on 1 Alien/Predator fourm and there is much evidence to back up the fact that many people did in fact like AVP. And Some people do think Alien isn't the best alien film. And it's very ignorant and rude to think you can speak for "everybody" when your only speaking for yourself.
He's not telling people how to act or behave, hes just saying that there are alot of people who think they know what the vast majority is, but in reality they are only basing it off of their opinion, and what 1 Alien/Predator fourm has to say, totally disregarding any facts or evidence that might disagree with them.

It annoys the shit out of me when people think they can speak for me. Somone says "all true fans hate AVP.", I say "I liked AVP." That person then says "Then your not a true fan."
I hate that. I'm just as big a fan as you, I just don't share your opinion.

People who flame other people for the sheer thrill in it are pathetic to me. At the same time, you've really gone a long way to alienating yourself from the community if you think that opining about this fact is worth a whole topic upon. Regardless of what happens here, you're not obligated to post or even read posts if you don't like what you're seeing. Trying to single-handedly change viewpoints on a forum is fruitless when you think about the fact that you don't have to visit boards where the opinion makes you feel under attack.
I apologize if I came on a little strong. I've edited the original post to soften it a bit. Obivously most of the board isn't that awful. Hell, most of the board... is probably just lurking and not even posting, it often seems. But there's a good 10-20 people spoiling the fun by making blanket, derisive statements.
I think you might understand that, once I've been called a useless pile of flesh and messaged to be told that I should just commit suicide - because of my opinions on movies, for the love of god - I'm a little bit passionate about this.
We're all here for the same reason. We all love the creatures and the franchise(s). So why do we have to be so hateful to each other? Shouldn't we be friendly and united because we have something huge in common?

Yeah well, that may have been the first shot across the bow that made me think "What the hell is going on here?" - but it was a series of blanket statements all made in one day over in the AVP2 forum that finally broke the camel's back. Four or five sweeping statements about what "True Fans" believe, about 20 rattlings of having the support of "the entire fanbase" at their back, the illogical "you MADE YOURSELF believe your position" crap, and basically more than enough fallacies to make me get a complete row in Internet Argument Losing Bingo.

Seriously though, I respect your difference in opinion here and in other places Bishop2. No one should really take things personal when we all love the same subject. Even if you like AVP and A:R, the whole"suicide suggestion messages" bit is where people take a difference in opinion way too far.
Just vent if you have to next time with less general statement. Statements get you no place, but when you vent with a purpose...now there's a sight to behold. A few people here have it down to a formula. :)
Frankly, I think this did have a purpose. And as I said, the threats against me occurred weeks ago. It was the behavior of other individuals on the board making blanket statements as though they were "facts" that made me stand up and say, you know what? It's time for some people to grow up a bit. Why get so nasty?
I still stand by this post and think it serves a valid purpose. I get the feeling I'll be linking to it more and more as the AVP2 forum continues to crowd up.
