Holy shit. I've gotten a blister or two before, but just... holy shit.
I'm feeling a bizarre jealousy at the moment.
Another brilliant album!
My favorites are Nova Baby, Sister, and Gold on the Ceiling.
Just listened to a few songs by Black Keys. There's been a lot of talk about them on the Galaxy and I wanted to see what all the fuzz waz about. While the songs I tried out were pretty good, it wasn't something I immediately fell in love with, like I've done with some other bands. I will say that Tighten Up was pretty enjoyable though.
Excellent album but theyre getting increasingly safer with their music. Wether thats a deliberate attempt to get more airplay and be more accessible or its purely by chance I dont know. Four years ago I said to a friend that The Black Keys are what Kings Of Leon could have been if they hadnt turned all stadium pop (not that they give a shit because theyve made millions from it). Now it seems Black Keys are slowly turning into that ever since Rubber Factory.
However, pop sell outs or not, this shits awesome!

A great, short review that sums up my opinions on the album very well:
http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-black-keys-el-camino,66093/ (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-black-keys-el-camino,66093/)
QuoteThe Black Keys have always had a little Bad Company in them, even back when they were jamming on Junior Kimbrough songs in small clubs. All it took to expose the band's arena-rock side was a series of actual arena gigs, which finally happened with 2010's Brothers, one of the few rock records of the 21st century to get within spitting status of platinum status. El Camino is the first Black Keys record made for the band's newly expanded audience, and it's been properly fine-tuned for maximum impact amid massive crowds.
Frequent collaborator Danger Mouse is back as producer after overseeing Brothers' breakout hit "Tighten Up" and 2008's transitional LP Attack And Release, the record that first nudged the Black Keys in a poppier, less blooze-centric direction. El Camino distills the previous two records' approach down to 38 minutes of lean, mean, consistently catchy riffs and big, chant-worthy choruses. The rock-star confidence is palpable in "Money Maker," which blows out the band's usual soulful rock with a wrecking-ball beat. "Hell Of A Season" dabbles in post-punk crunch and slippery reggae shuffles, but otherwise, El Camino resides in a comfort zone of classic-rock worship: The power-pop nugget "Nova Baby" takes a page from Cheap Trick's late-'70s playbook, and "Gold On The Ceiling" powers forward like ZZ Top with a T. Rex engine.
If El Camino fails to produce a hit on par with "Tighten Up," it won't be for lack of trying. "Lonely Boy" and "Stop Stop" are instantly likeable pop songs that should fit comfortably between Foo Fighters and Kings Of Leon tracks on the local rock radio station. El Camino is so relentlessly crowd-pleasing that it feels a bit inconsequential; there's no room for the sad, sludgy ballads that used to anchor Black Keys albums in the band's new, sugar-heavy music. But when times are as good as they are El Camino, the blues can wait for another day.
Bang on review.
Finally listened to it. Enjoyed the album considerably. Favourite two songs have to be Little Black Submarines and Mind Eraser. LBM's probably #1 for me. It was just so much different than the other songs, starting out as a slow acoustic song with instruments gradually being added, until finally breaking out into an electric rock song. Most of the other tracks sounded pretty similar, so this one was a nice change of pace.
Least favourite is definitely Dead and Gone. Just didn't much care for it's sound.
I'm getting f**king sick of Lonely Boy, though. I loved it when it was first released, I listened to it all the time. But now, every time I turn on the radio, that f**king song is playing. It's goddamn everywhere!
Radio could potentially turn Lonely Boy into The Black Keys very own Sex On Fire. A blessing and a curse.
They've been heading towards a more accessible, pop friendly sound for the past three albums and just like Kings of Leon, its only took one song to suddenly explode into the mainstream and get played on the radio 15 times a day.
Yeah, I've definitely noticed a more pop sound, especially on this album. Not necessarily a bad thing; they've just got to remember their Blues roots.
I'd say Strange Times was the first song you could notice it on. Then on the next album theres was 2 or 3 songs that could have easily been on a Radio 1 playlist. This latest album is choc full of them.
And for the record I absolutely love Lonely Boy so I hope I dont get sickened by its radio play.
I'm just avoiding radio for awhile; seems the only solution.

Spent a lot of time driving through the country, this past week. Not much else to do.
Don't think I ever posted in here, but I bought the album a few weeks back. Nova Baby is without a doubt my favorite on the album, followed closely by Little Black Submarines.
Between the two albums of theirs I've listened to in their entirety, I think my favorite Black Keys songs are probably These Days and nova Baby. I really need to pick up some of their older stuff, though.
Nova Baby, F'YEAH.
And lately, These Days has been floating around my top favorites of theirs along with My Mind is Ramblin'.
For me, I heard both of those songs on youtube before purchasing their respective album, but when I heard those two songs...wow. They just hit me. Without a doubt my favorite songs by them so far.
I think mine remains Unknown Brother. Few songs have ever been able to stir my emotions as much as that.
You should definitely check out their early stuff, though. It's much different than their more recent pop-y sound; Bluesy and kickass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ33OXxFIAM#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ33OXxFIAM#ws)
Thinking about it, this is probably my top favorite of theirs. It's got the feel of Unknown Brother, but with the theme of a different kind of love; Dan's passion coming across equally strong.
I can't believe the number of people I've shown this song to that'd never heard it before.
Bluesy as Hell, I love that song. Wish they'd had one or two like that on El Camino.
Yeah, the main thing I missed from El Camino was the slow emotional beats... sure there were ones with some pretty clear emotion (Sister, Dead & Gone, and Nova Baby particularly), but there wasn't anything like These Days, Things Aint Like They Used To Be, Unknown Brother, Never Gonna Give You Up, etc (choices from Attack & Release and Brothers). Those always made the albums for me.
El Camino's true grace shows in how much it makes you want to dance (or just dance, in my case ), and there-in, it's really quite spectacular. I'll dance up a storm, but I'll never just sit still, swelling with emotions, as the previous two albums did for me (which seemed in similar balance).
Edit: Thread title changed for wider Black Keys discussion relevance.
OK, good, I'm not the only one that dances to El Camino :D

I love this. Very genuine and fun to watch.
Got me excited and dancy. I love Black Keys music videos.
Really enjoyed the music video :)
Also, today I watched their Live at the Crystal Ballroom DVD (bought it a couple days ago) and really loved it! Especially seeing Patrick Carney on those drums :o
I really need to pick up their older albums. Listening to the stuff on youtube is good and all, but I need to own it. I just can't seem to find them for reasonable prices.

That's what it seems to be. Here's hoping! :)

QuoteThe Black Keys have revealed the title and release date of their new LP: Turn Blue, their eighth studio album, will be released on May 13th. And they shared that information in an incredibly cryptic and absurd way – through a Mike Tyson tweet. "Turn Blue," the boxing legend wrote on Friday, along with a link to a kooky, David Lynch-ian Youtube video of a hypnotherapist and a spinning pink record.

Aye, 'tis a catchy tune.
One thing is it's sounding quite samey to El Camino so far. Hopefully that's just for the one song. Prefer it if they change up their sound again. Love it when artists have variety.
Diggin' it, really loved that whacky-ass promo as well, stands nicely alongside El Camino's hilarious bit with Bob Odenkirk as the used car salesman.

Liking the sound of this a lot more than Fever (which was good, but sounded too much like it was right off of El Camino), hope this is more indicative of the album's direction; the title being the same as the album's gives me a bit of hope, though I hope even moreso that it's experimental in tone, similar to Brothers (which I believe is their best work for sure).
This is actually my first time hearing Turn Blue... somehow I missed it when it was released. Great stuff. I agree with you on all counts, especially Brothers being their best work.
If they can keep that pseudo-bluesy-pseudo-psychedelic sound going throughout the album, I will be a very happy man.
Just gave the whole album a listen and I really liked it. I wouldn't call it my favorite (that would definitely be Brothers) but there's some really great stuff on it. Last two tracks are my favorite.
Article Monkeys > The Black Keys :P
Finally got around to listening to Turn Blue. I quite liked it. Upon the release of the single Fever, I was afraid that this album might be just a rehash of El Camino. I was wrong. This album is its own thing, with a distinct style and sound. Still letting it sink in, and I need to give it another listen to really get a feel for it and pick out my favourite tracks, but overall, great album. I'd still rank Brothers as The Black Keys' best work, but I think they outdid El Camino with this release.
One thing, though. The closing track, Gotta Get Away, much as I liked it, felt kinda out of place in the soundscape set up by the rest of the album.

It did feel a bit out of place, definitely, but it also wound up being my favorite of the bunch. Definitely the one I've played the most since purchasing the album.
I think my favourite's Weight of Love.
