Title: Damon Lindelof talks Prometheus [Video]
Post by: Darkoo on Jun 28, 2011, 04:37:28 AM
QuoteWant to learn lots about Star Trek producer (& sequel co-writer/producer) Damon Lindelof? Yesterday Damon spent 2 hour & 40 minutes on The Kevin Pollak Chat Show. Amazingly they barely touch on Star Trek, but Lindelof talks about his genesis as a writer, a lot about Lost plus Twitter feuds Cowboys & Aliens, Prometheus, collaborating with JJ Abrams and Ridley Scott, and more

Pretty interesting interview. Filled my daily quota of misguided Star Wars prequel bashing too.

From what I can tell he basically just rehashed what Ridley has already said, only with helpful life lessons.

Great work as always Darkoo.

I liked how writers all magically become something else on a movie set when the writers strike was happening. This guy was a 'producer' that I'm SURE did no rewrites, or script doctoring during his tenure on the set.  ::)

On Prometheus: This guy untangles a lot of the rhetoric that's been confusing people and really spells it out for everyone. This IS in the alien universe but without anything you'd recognize as an Alien. Dope.

bhaha sticks, if everyone keeps saying it (Star Wars prequel bashing) it must be true  :P.

I like Lindelofs take on what makes a prequel good and what he liked about the original, cant wait to see if harvest was the original script he referenced, im getting a gut feeling its part shadow 19.

Interesting.

Good to hear some confirmations. I'm glad they are trying to be original and shock the audience again rather than rehashing old trends. 10 points Sir.

I found his comments pretty encouraging. Glad he seems to feel so strongly about the movie standing on it's own in a story sense and not just repeating the same formulas again.

Also, the Larry King impersonation at the end is hilarious.

Seems about ideal to me - I want to see something new that works in universe.
Has that ever been successfully done before? i can only think of Soldier to Blade Runner, which really, really wasn't!

Nice interview. Damon seems really smart, and his ideas regarding what a prequel should be makes sense. Ultimately doing it this way will be stronger, and will allow the film to stand on it's own merits.

This. I was very impressed, he sounds like he knows what he's doing (fingers crossed).

I'll be interested in Ridley's direction and ideas,  Noomi's acting and anything that Giger adds to the film. The rest doesn't look like my cup of tea

Ohhh Damon, I've got so much respect for you because of what you did with the genious epic of "Lost", but why would you need to bash Star Wars, the greatest franchise that movie history has brought us so far... it's a battle you can only lose...

However, I really like the idea of this not being an alien movie, but the events still happening in the same world.

It's something different and something new.

His opinions about Prequels is useless though, if it were for him we would have prequels that aren't prequels at all  ???

I think not. Damon was called in in mid 2010, and the Harvest Script was out before then I believe. To me this interview futher proved the Alien Harvest script was a bunch of bull. Mainly because he said it was under lock and key and they had some one standing over him while he read it so he could not leak it out. I believe the Harvest Script came out early 2010, if that is the case Fox would not have given a damn and just sent him the script via email if it was already leaked. To me this kinda proved it was never leaked, and like I always figured the Alien Harvest script was bogus.

No, he meant that prequels shouldn't exist solely to set up everything we know in the original movie, but should have self-contained stories of their own. And his think his Star Wars criticism was quite fair; he was hardly screaming about childhoods being raped.

Yes; but we knew of at least 4 rewrites before Lindelof was brought in, so that doesn't disqualify it. It just disqualifies it, in it's original form. The version that leaked. But we already knew that. Its still all kinda in the air, like a dangling carrot. There's just no telling what of that script wasn't rewritten before Lindelof was brought on, if it was legit. There could have been major changes and I don't think it's possible that if Harvest was an early draft, that there haven't been major changes.

For instance, he mentions having read the Spaihts script and thinking, they should separate the story from linking up to ALIEN, as HARVEST certainly did. If you make those adjustments, that would already change some major things in HARVEST.

So, it's tough.

Lindelof might not be 100% honest about the anecdotal story of reading the script, and one of scott free's problems could have been that it was leaked, maybe it bogus maybe it's not, time will tell, I don't really care either way honestly as I didn't mind some aspects if it.

Well, I'll see it anyway, I even saw Adjustment Bureau at the cinema and Skyline too realising that I wouldn't think much of them. The idea of a monster design by Neville Page and a script by Lindelof script doesn't inspire me particularily. I hope they've developed since if their work is a main feature of the movie as much as we're being led to understand. I'm not too keen about Lindelof rattling on about being a "fanboy".

I keep thinking about how ill I felt when i found out that Joss Whedon was writing Alien Resurrection.

And I keep thinking about the wonderful time we had when people were hurling verbal abuse at one of the Strause brothers when he was a member of this forum.

There's something not right.

But if Lindelof is just stepping in as a name and nothing more to give interest to the film, I'm not too concerned.

I read that quote from Page, and yet Giger was apparently on board as a designer, in a hands-off capacity ... I took Page to mean that he was to physically create something better than Giger, not necessarily design it ... but ... I don't know ... Maybe Giger designed some creatures and Page another? I want Giger beasts.

Well, Giger is designing something, that is for sure. There has been this issue that Scott wanted someone new to design a new creature because Giger was unlikely to come up with something fresh.  And here it seems that Page did a drawing of a creature that was supposed to be better than Giger's, and the result was something that Ridley liked.

Honestly, Giger was all they needed, designing new creatures. I dont trust anybody else to do something interesting. Even if thye used other people for contrast, I have never been scared by anything Neville Page has designed.

Yeah my only possible missgiving with lindelof writing, is wether his tone is a right fit for Ridley, he even address the problem in the interview, saying how he has a lighter tone, and ridley is very serious.

I caught that, I wonder how pressured he'll be to lighten it up. Cause you know Ridley will shoot it really dense.

Well, the first movie relied on more than one person designing the creatures, but when Giger wasn't directly involved, they were stiill using Giger's Necronomicon as central point of reference. So the chestburster and the facehugger in the end were not Giger creations but were based on Giger's creativity. I think Dan drew the design for the Facehugger based on what different people wanted taken from Giger's paintings. So I could respect a decision to have Neville draw something based on various things from Giger's work in that way.

Same way as James Cameron and Stan Winston used Giger's work as reference when designing for Aliens. I have faith in Ridley that he will get the most out of Page.

That one scene was, for me, the only real ALIEN moment in the film. Then it was killed by that awful one-liner by Johner...a terrible name for a character too by the way. I like the idea that the "kill me" was used in every film save for alien3.

Im not worried about ridleys interpretation of tone per-say, just the story, as even lindelof pointed out it's he isn't really used to being so serious, I do take comfort that Ridley guided the writing process with lindelof though.

"This pain, this nightmare" I'm sure when Whedon was writing it he thought it was lyrical and beautiful dialogue, as opposed to stilted and very unreal when spoken. Whoever told Whedon he could write obviously led him astray.

What happened with imo AR is that despite the lighter and almost parody tone, it lost ALL of the seriousness of the first 3 films with the exception of a few moments here or there. I couldn't and didn't believe that what any of the characters were experiencing was real.

Why ALIEN is a masterpiece for me is, in large part due to how believable each moment was; Lamberts emotional breakdown, Parkers freak out, and ultimately Ripleys default heroism that came off as if she was terrified and pissed off all at once. The characters of ALIEN are what made that movie, not the designs and certainly not the alien creature (to a certain extent).

I miss actors really acting, and selling how scared they might be in a given situation. There was a moment in ALIEN where Ripley runs into the creature in the corridor. She gets so scared she seems like she is going to throw up. THAT is fear. That is what these films have been missing...authentic fear married to authentic characters.

For all of ALIENS greatness, it did not carry this sense of realism over, nor did the masterpiece that I believe ALIEN3 is.
