Die Hard 2 is so-so (so farking derivative of the first film). The others are great; even 4.0's theatrical cut.
Die Hard: With A Vengeance has grown on me over the years. There are certain scenes that I just go :o to, such as McClane standing in Harlem *with that sign*. I also loved the opening song, for the film, "Summer in the City". Another thing is when the terrorists are on screen, they play this awesome marching theme with a trumpet. I think Die Hard 3 has great soundtrack and it's my favorite film in the franchise.

Oh, definately! The Uncut version of it actually makes a massive difference, and really is the only true way to watch it.

Well, I got that steelcase 2-disc version. I'm pretty sure it was limited. I'm also pretty sure that the unrated version is still available, (if not the only thing out there). But if your interested, you should look for it.

hell yeah im interested. They should never of cut the movie down in the first place. It was filmed great and had a good plot by Die Hard standards....but Die Hard comes with a legacy of badassery, and they forced a cut out of Die Hard 4 removing particular areas of badassery.

Ill be honest, as brutal as it sounds. Some of my favorite Die Hard scenes are of Mclane beating the shit out of someone thats pissed him off, spewing out language whilst breakin necks.

Die Hard 4.0 felt like padding storywise. It didn't help either that they toned it down(which makes the other versions simply a marketing trick). What is the point to create a sequel if you can't keep up the consistency with it's predecessors? MPAA is a *bleep* joke and nothing but a bunch of sissy fools with no common sense in how to rate violent entertainment. It's not like they help children truly handle violence psychologically that way anyways. DH4 was made for MPAA and not for the respect towards the previous installments(atleast the first movie wasn't JUST padding from it's initial idea). That begs the question, does the world really need another padding installment? I don't care what Bruce Willis says about it, just leave the old movies as they are, heck, leave the fourth one as the conclusion. Don't complicate it any further.

Depends on how one looks at it. I for one have no expectations before something is actually proven with the new film. If there's no story that makes all the violent encounters between Mclane and the villains work in a manner that justifies the whole mess like in the first movie(something the fourth basically lacked with it's tech-foam-padding BS for a story) I say forget it. I simply have no expectations for I need the right ones to have any which there simply isn't for nothing hasn't been proven outside "go spend money at our gimmick with your whole family which we made this violent tale friendly for".
Die Hard 4.0 the harder cut (or whatever its called on the uk cover) is the only example of a supposedly extended version which adds no extra scenes that is still miles better than the original version. Simply reinserting swear words which had been removed for the theatrical cut and putting back some of the violence (blood and gunshot wounds more prominent, shots of up close physical violence lasting longer and making some of the sound effects in the fights more brutal which where also toned down to give it the theatrical rating they wanted) shouldnt really make a movie any better than it already is. But in the case of a Die Hard movie it does. When the first 3 where unashamedly violent and the main character uses profanities constantly it makes no sense that all of a sudden hes all, and i quote Samuel L Jackson from The Long Kiss Goodnight, "aww phooey i burned the darn muffin".
I was watching it thinking eh what, has john gone soft in his old age. Where once he'd ridicule his opponents with expletive ridden wise cracks he now just grunts while hes fighting them. Now in the new version where its all been put back in he sounds like the old mclane we all knew and loved. For example in the theatrical cut when the kid is rambling on about conspiracies in the car and john tells him to "shut up will ya". In the new cut he he says quietly "shut up" and then when he doesnt he gets angry and shouts "SHUT THE F**K UP". Thats the Mclane we know. He also uses his signature MotherF**cker alot just like he does in the other movies. Sounds like a daft thing to complain about but without the swearing its not the same john mclain. I didnt like the new dialogue in the tunnel though. Instead of saying "i was out of bullets" after destroying the helicopter with a car he says "hundreds of people die in car accidents every day, thats like four more". I was out of bullets was just short and sweet and straight to the point and its quite funny. While the other one is good too i prefered the original line.

I think Wiseman is a good director and I did enjoy the last Die Hard movie. I prefer the unrated version from the theatrical, and if Wiseman does return to direct again by some chance. I would much rather have an R rating this time, than PG-13 again...

If he dislikes it that much the directors cut aint gonna make him think otherwise. I enjoyed the theatrical cut so when the directors cut was released and we got the real John back i loved it. Fit it in with the tone of all the other movies alot better. But i doubt if i hated it to begin with, the inclusion of profanity and slightly more brutal violence would have made a difference.

I'd say Die Hard: With A Vengeance is my favourite, then Die Hard, Die Hard 4.0 (Harder Cut) and then Die Hard 2.
I must say though that I still love Die Hard 2 I just think its the worst one because its an almost carbon copy of the first. But its a blast to watch and alot better than most action films that get churned out these days.
Die Hard With A Vengeance has the least flashy action and doesnt have as many big colorful explosions like 2 and 4.0 had but its the most enjoyable because of the sense of urgency and the banter between McClane and Zeus (it is Zeus right).

The WAV is my fave for sure though! So many great exchanges between Willis and Jackson. Especially whenever they are in a car together.

I think the main reason WAV is so good is:
Bruce Willis + Samuel L Jackson vs Jeremy Irons = Win.
They're all damn good action movies and the only problem I had with Die Hard 4.0 was the tone. Because of something so simple like the lack of swearing and violence, it didnt feel like a Die Hard. The action, the story, the set pieces, the characters were all fine. But it didnt feel like die hard. Then I watched the Harder Cut on the Ultimate Action Edition DVD (why are unrated and not seen in theater editions of dvds given cheesy names) and I got the John McClane that i knew back and it felt right. I really enjoyed it and I hope they can pull it off again with Die Hard 5.
Then kill him at the end in some uber heroic sacrifice and end it for good, with McClane dying as a hero. :o

It aint that different. A few lines have been altered, often into a more aggressive, foul mouthed version of the same thing, and there are more shots of lingering violence. So normally a guy might get shot and cuts away fast, now might see him hit the deck with a thud with blood flying out.
But most of it all happens so fast and usually during action scenes that there really is not much difference. But that small difference made it so much better for me. It went from being "hmm its ok, not a bad effort for PG-!3" to "f**k, this is Die Hard, and its pretty good". Ive said it before though, if you hated the theatrical cut to start with, it aint gonna change your opinion.

It's a bit of a messy story.
Basically, in a nutshell, if you own it on (an English) DVD then it will be cut just like you saw there. On TV, however, it's usually completely uncut (at least it was on BBC 3 not too long ago).
What's funny is that the film was in fact resubmitted to the BBFC in 2008 and they waived all their previously made cuts, but despite this an uncut DVD has still not been released over here. Which seriously sucks.
And the fault is with Buena Vista (who distribute the film), since they're so fu#king lazy. Just to rub salt in the wound, it would seem, a new DVD was released in February (as in almost two years after it was resubmitted)... and it was the cut version!
Now, we're generally getting screwed over in Britain in the DVD department, but this is just ridiculous.
wow so all these years ive been watching a slightly watered down version (in terms of language) of Die Hard 3 and i never even knew. Its probably what gave it its 15 rating. Keeping them in may have bumped it up to an 18. If not then there wouldnt be a reason to make those changes would there?
What's interesting is, that Vengeance may have the most obscenities out of all four of them.
well obviously not the uk version. ill have to rewatch them but judging by those cuts i wouldnt be surprised if it now has the least (if im counting the harder cut dvd iof Die Hard 4 which i own)
If they ever get round to releasing WAV on blu-ray over here, it will definitely be uncut. But those wheels turn rather slowly, so until then I'd just make a point of recording it the next time it's on TV.
aww man ive never noticed before but now i know i bet i start noticing loads of instances where the lips dont match the words very well.
DHWAV often gets shown on the BBC here in the UK uncut, however the gun shots are noticibly quiet in volume!
im UK and i own Die Hard with a Vengeance on DVD, its the two disk collectors edition. Do ya reckon mine has all those cuts? Cause i loathe cuts.
I have that version too, and yes it is heavily cut (of course I, like many, wasn't aware of the cuts when I bought it).

I would love to see other Die Hard films. Willis never lost his touch despite his age, and McClane is one of those timeless characters like Indiana Jones and James Bond.
I just hope talent gets behind the making of this so we won't have the unpleasent memory of a bad Die Hard film.
The character has to die in whatever film will be the last. It just has to happen. The only way to finish the series with a bang and give the character a good send off is for him to die a hero, sacrificing himself. After everything he's been through it's all I can see happening. Wouldnt mind cameos from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Justin Long in a sequel but don't make them part of the plot again. Bring back Zeus in some capacity perhaps?

What's Playing website has now learned that the new sequel is being called "Die Hard 24/7" and the villain will be and Gruber family member. For those who don't remember, Alan Rickman played Hans Gruber in the first film, and Jeremy Irons played Simon Gruber, the brother of Hans, in the third. The site believes that the new villain will likely not be another brother or a son of either of the Gruber brothers. Instead, the film may go with a female villain, a sister of Hans and Simon.
Not sure if I can take that report seriously, to be honest.

The 4th Die Hard movie has a 80% on RT, it did great for a PG-13 film and a lot of people thought it would have been like AVP all over again. Odd that they pick February to release the film.

After securing a director and locking down a Valentine's Day 2013 release date, Fox is now ready to line up its young thesp to star alongside Bruce Willis in "A Good Day to Die Hard" -- and whoever wins the job could be setting up to carry the lucrative franchise forward.
In the next week, Willis will begin reading with actors for the role of John McClane's son, including Ben Foster, Paul Dano, Aaron Paul and Milo Ventimiglia. Fox is also showing strong interest in Paul Walker, but he's not expected to test.
The studio had no comment on the casting process.
Fox and Willis have been trying to get the latest "Die Hard," directed by John Moore from a script by Skip Woods, off the ground for some time. After a handful of rewrites and the loss of its original director, Noam Murro, over scheduling conflicts, Fox and producer Alex Young seem to have the wheels in motion to get the film into production sometime in 2012.
Plot details are being kept under wraps -- except for that it will be set in Russia, with McClane and son fighting some sort of threat.
As the pic began clearing obstacles, the role of McClane's son has been on the minds of most of the young actors in Hollywood, as insiders say it could open the door to inherit the "Die Hard" franchise -- much like Jeremy Renner could wind up the face of Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" series, or Shia LaBeouf in "Indiana Jones."
Given how much control Willis has over the property, the coming chem tests will be critical in determining who'll get the gig. Dano and Foster have worked with Willis in the past, but as of right now no actor is said to have an inside track.

Live Free and Die Hard was dropped as DH4s title and relegated to being a tagline everywhere except the US, it's possible this might do the same, to be it just makes me think McClane is going to get trapped in a Star Trek convention and has to take out all the Klingons.
I dont give a buggery what it ends up being called as long as its good. Die Hard 4.0 has got its haters but I thought it was damn good, especially the DVD version which turns McClane back into the angry sweary man that we know and loved from the original films. Hated the change in dialogue after he takes down the chopper though but other than that I found it much more enjoyable than the theatrical cut.

I liked both to be honest and if the car accident was the only one id heard id probably love it, but I just thought the other one was so short and succinct that it was funnier.

Hmm you know the second one does sound better. Its sarcastic and I like that. I was out of bullets reeks of cheesy movie hero banter whereas the second one is more in line with McClanes sarcastic and ironic humor of the first films.

And thats now the second time youve said that and somebody has already pointed out they didnt discard the score from the first three. You do know Michael Kamen died before they made Die Hard 4.0 so they couldnt have gotten him to do the score anyway? But they did re-use some of his cues from his scores for the first three films.
Infact one of the things I loved about Die Hard 4.0 was that I instantly recognised them within the soundtrack. You must be tone deaf or youre just trolling because I dont know how you cant hear the old score in the newest film.
Aslong as this film had Bruce Willis, delivering awesome one liners, shooting the f**k out of everyone and shit blowing up. Aslong as the plot line is passable and their is a decent amount of tension. Not a heavy use of CGI and no crappy censorship. Im happy. I just wanna see Mcclane get as brutal on someone as he did in the past movies. Like when he beats the holy crap out of the long haired german guy then strings him up with chains.
That was another thing I liked about Die Hard 4. They used practical effects and stunts uite alot for a modern action movie. That helicopter stunt for example would have been all CGI in alot of other films as would the tunnel sequence.
Yeah Die Hard 4 surprised me, because it was actually good. Not AS good as the previous ones, but still good.
The only scenes that got a bit much for me was the whole "I can survive a jet fighter machine gun spraying my truck and shredding it. Now im gonna jump and tea bag that bitch in his cockpit" scene. A bit too much for me lol

Namely jumping out of helicopters onto jumbo jets, ejecting out of cockpits as the plane explodes, swinging down off a bridge onto a boat and falling from a height that would almost certainly kill any human being, being launched out of a drain by a torrent of water and landing conveniently infront of zeus's eyes, crawling out of that train wreckage completely fine.

Hubbs you know you could always just buy a boxset of the original trilogy. Nobody is forcing you to watch these films. I for one thought the 15 rated DVD cut of Die Hard 4.0 was surprisingly good and for once a film didnt rely on CGI and it did everything they possibly could with practical effects which I thought was pretty commendable because it didnt look out of place when comparing it to the other films in the series. If they go down the same route again and aim for the R/15 rating to begin with instead of creating a "harder" cut DVD to appease fans, then Im actually quite excited for this.

Agreed. I enjoyed the theatrical cut alot and then when I saw the DVD version that I own I thought it was great. Didn't think it would make that much difference, but even having John back to his foul mouthed self made a huge difference because it made his character more inline with what he was like in the first 3 films.

Anyway, unfortunatly I don't own any of the movies (I'm not rich.... haha), but I've seen the first three on T.V and liked them.
Oh wait.... hold that thought, my brother bought #4, I saw that one too.
I like the franchise overall. My opinion on the sequel, I'm indifferent at the moment, but don't worry about it too much movie optimist, I'm usually indifferent about most movies that haven't come out yet or I haven't seen yet. It's mostly when I actually see the movie I get more pumped... or disappoint.
I think this movie could surprise me like the 4th movie did. The director of the 4th movie only did the first two Underworld movies and did a good job on the film.
I really hope this one isn't censored like DH 4 was. Not hearing f**k was actually painful.
That's why I watch my Unrated cut. Plenty of f**ks to go around.
We shouldn't have to wait for one.

The unrated cut isn't that great really. Some of the dubbed in F-Bombs and CGI blood effects are atrocious. And why did they have to ruin "I was outta bullets."?
But it's worth it for the uncut yippee ki yay line.

There are also little touches of dialogue such as.
"Okay. Car's on fire. That can't be good."

I remember the PG-13 version did the say "yippee ki yay mother f**ker " line at the end of the film from what I can remember? The director's cut is better, but I think the 4th movie was a good movie. Better then the second movie, but not good as the first and third movie.
The 'motherf**ker' line couldn't be heard over the sound of the gunshot in the PG-13 version.

Yeah, in the rated version. It's obvious, like when Willis pushes the fridge behind the door in Farrell's apartment. The line is supposed to be "Are you f**king nuts?!" but it's changed to "Are you nuts?!" Watch closely and you'll see Willis' lips move without saying anything.

I really like the title of this one. I get annoyed when movie series titles dont match up (mixing subtitles with numbers etc). Just a minor grievance but its always rankled me why they do that. Look at the Rambo films. First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo III, Rambo. WTF Stallone? Rocky I,II,III,IV,V and then Rocky Balboa? WTF Stallone.
Kinda wish they had stuck to it for the Die Hard films. Die Hard II could have simply been its tagline "Die Harder", then you'd have Die Hard With A Vengeance, Live Free Or Die Hard (changed to Die Hard 4.0 here in the UK) and then this one A Good Day To Die Hard. Would have been a nice flowing set of titles.

I'm confused on what he was saying too. The actual title is Die Hard 2: Die Harder. The rest had the title "Die Hard" as puns for their movie sequels.
He's saying he wants consistency in the naming, as in, he wishes Die Hard 2: Die Harder had only been called Die Harder, thus keeping up with the pattern of not numbering the films.
Die Harder was only a (hilarious) tagline, anyway. And I'm glad they went with
4.0 over here. It's more fitting with the cyber terrorism plot, and
Live Free... always seemed a bit clunky to me.

This. Although like I said if Die Hard 2: Die Harder was simply "Die Harder" it would still leave Die Hard 4.0 in the UK. They changed it because Live Free Or Die Hard was based on a motto for the state some of the film was based in (help me out Americans you'll know what im talking about) and they (rightly) thought it would go over the heads of us here in the UK.
Anyway that was just a minor grievance of mine. One of the examples I gave was the Rambo films which I think have a horrible sequence of titles. The first film is First Blood and by the third film its simply Rambo III and then the fourth is just Rambo even though the second film's main title was also Rambo (with the prefix of First Blood Part II). So Rambo comes after Rambo III. Yeah great thinking there Stallone.

Oh god the fast and the furious movies. Exactly the same problem. Titles are all over the f**king place and some of them have different names in different regions.
The Thing prequel was a strange one too, giving it the same name minus the "John Carpenter's" prefix. For us fans we knew it was a prequel but I wonder how many casual movie fans thought it was just a remake or didn't even have a clue it was a prequel to an existing movie at all. I've now got 2 Blu Ray's on my shelf called The Thing. It's just stupid.

Loved that scene from the movie, and I know they that shot was all real (using pyrotechnics and launch cables for the car) but I would like to see Mythbusters try it in their next "Movie Myths Special".

Glad they are making another Die Hard.... 4 while not as brutally violent, was a perfectly acceptable sequel i had no issue with. It gave me lots of action and stunts, one liners but no annoying comedy... tahts how i like it. But i would like the tension from the old Die Hards to be brought back a bit.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Making Cameo in A Good Day to Die Hard
It seems that A Good Day to Die Hard will feature a McClane family reunion of sorts. Background actor Ted Cross revealed that Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be returning in a cameo role as John McClane's daughter in A Good Day to Die Hard. Here's what the extra had to say on his blog.
"I got to work with Bruce Willis again, which is always nice. The best, though, was that I got to work with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Willis' daughter."
The actress originally appeared in Live Free or Die Hard as Lucy Gennero McClane. Jai Courtney is playing John McClane Jr. in this adventure set in Russia, where the estranged father and son team up. It isn't known how big Mary Elizabeth Winstead's role will be, although Ted Cross did mention the scene is towards the end of the movie.

I liked Live Free or Die Hard but I'm still bit worry about this movie. It's from the director of Max Payne and I hated that movie. It was so boring that I almost fell asleep in the theater.

I hate reading comments about people complaining saying, "oh this looks like shit because it's PG-13", or "I'm not seeing this since it's rated PG-13." Don't they know this movie is rated R?

Dude, I ain't the one complaining. I love all the Die Hard films R rated or not, they're still awesome. The unrated cut of Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4.0 to you guys) was more entertaining to me than the theatrical cut for all the swearing and bloody violence.

Live Free or Die Hard was PG-13 and it turn out fine. The movie got good reviews from critics and the audience, it was a better PG-13 sequel then AVP and Highlander III was in my opinion.
The film was entertaining because it wasn't boring but a censored Die Hard is somewhat painful to sit through to an extent. John McLane has to utter his line without someone cutting it out prematurely.
^Which is something I honestly don't understand the point of. I've seen plenty of PG-13 movie that get away with a single f**k.

Yeah, this is one of those series' that hasn't yet produced a bad movie. Obviously none have been as good as the first, and they aren't all of amazing quality (1 and 4 being my personal favourites, then 3, then 2) but there hasn't been a really shit one yet. Hopefully this one doesn't buck the trend.

I don't know why Fox just will not release an unrated cut of Live Free of Die Hard. Maybe if it was included in that set, I'd be tempted to get that. But I'm happy with my previously released Die Hard Collection on Blu, for the time being.

You can have a good movie with a PG-13 rating. Most people enjoy Live Free or Die Hard despite it being PG-13. Movies like AVPR show that R rating does not always make it better.

Not to mention I found Justin Long incredibly annoying. The scene when he and McClane are trying to start a car by talking to the On-Star operator or whatever it was is totally unnecessary and cringe worthy. I have. But Fox is lame and didn't release it on the Blu-Ray edition and I refuse to spend money on the same movie twice just to hear profanity. It's stupid.

There's a few standouts like Robert Patrick & John Leguizamo. But for the most part, I agree with SiL that 2 & 4 are the weakest in the bunch.
Die Hard 2 was a lazy retread that tried to turn Die Hard into a Christmas event movie. They simply took everything from Die Hard that worked, then exaggerated it almost to the point of parody. It has it's moments but I find it pretty meh overall.
EDIT: Call me cynical but I've got a feeling that the recent R Rating is more a result of the MPAA clamping down on gun crime/ violence in films rather than a decision that was made on the direction of the film earlier in production. I imagine Fox had always aimed for a hard R and with the recent controversy over violence in films they get to throw in a few more of the 'f**ks!' they were saving for the blu-ray release and ride the film in on a wave of fan love.

Yeah, that I can believe. Also there wasn't anything particularly exciting about it, unlike the first film where it was just one man against a group of trained terrorists.

Robert barely had any screen time so that's a moot point. I don't remember seeing Leguizamo though.
I've always liked 2. It has the best continuity of any of the sequels.
2 definitely had some of the best kick ass gun fighting action since 'Robocop', that was the plus point, it was just gratuitous shoot em up violence with plenty of bloody squibs. The fact it involved airliner terrorism was a good angle too, always an uneasy premise that would make anyone sweat.
The problem was it was just bland and none of the bad guys were very memorable, faceless like I said. For me the franchise is a trilogy, the third was a great idea despite not being as 'hard', after that there is no more.
Okay, I will give points to Die Hard 2 for it's fun ejector seat sequence and naked William Sadler Tai-Chi.
I thought the plot twist was genuinely surprising.

I know it's been discussed to death, but the film's a post production nightmare either way, with obviously removed/poorly dubbed in swearing and nonexistent/unconvincing CGI blood depending on which cut you choose. :-\

LFODH as the unrated cut. There has to be some reason why it hasn't seen the light of day. With the upcoming film, now seemed liked the perfect time. Instead, we're getting a repacked set which is almost, if not entirely the same as the one from a few years ago. Only with a few new bonus features thrown in.

Which is why I wouldn't buy this box set. I already own the previous Blu-Ray release set and unless Fox gives us the unrated cut on BD, there's no reason in the world for me to buy up.

After butchering my favorite video game, I'm not really a fan of Moore. But my need for Bruce Willis outweighs my dislike of the director.
I'm saying either PG-13 and longer run time, less time slots available in theater (since it is PG-13 more people can see it = money) or keep Rated R just make the film shorter, so more time slots = money for studio, essentially an ultimatum.
Like if a movie is 4 hours long, you can't exactly have that many showtimes per day, compared to a 1hr 30 min movie.
or like Remonster said, maybe the director just typically has shorter films in general.

Sure, now he's an action hero but in DH and DHWAV at least, he was more of an Action Man.

Well he'd certainly have to be a man of steel to survive some of the insanity they seem to be putting him through and there's really only so much insanity I can take. I found that out with the last film.
I think the franchise has lost its gritty realism, of course you know 'McClane' isn't gonna die but lets at least keep the action somewhat sensible. This film is starting to give me ideas of 'True Lies' which isn't bad but its not the right direction for a Die Hard film.

Realism? You can't eject yourself out of a cockpit that's loaded with grenades and survive the explosion. Or drive right past a guy with an SMG on a snowmobile who's firing at you less than three feet away and he misses. In the latter case, I'm referring to the mercenary, not McLane as it was the merc who was using live ammo.
Each film has at least a couple of moments where maximum suspension of disbelief is required.
Though, yeah, Die Hard 2 is kind of infamous for turning McClane into John Matrix (funny, when you think Die Hard was once planned as a Commando sequel).

I caught the majority of Die Hard 2 on a movie channel last night. Great stuff. I can't really bring myself to be all that excited about Die Hard 5 though. Nothing i've seen really sells me on it :-\

But the action was decent and old-style, so thumbs up for that.

I pretty much agree on all points. It felt like a very solid follow up to the original in continuing the Gruber arc. It was nice to see John McTiernan return to the directors chair too. :)

While that's arguably more satisfying than the helicopter climax, you can see why they didn't use it. It's more Punisher than Die Hard.

I like that ending, it's just a little too dark in tone and way serious for an action packed fun movie like Die Hard is.
No critic reviews for the movie and it's four days before it's released....uh-oh.
None of the movies that come out this week have review posted on RT, so I'm not worried yet.
I watched LFoDH Unrated Cut last night...so much fun.
My favourite line I think would be McLane to Farrell in the apartment at the beginning, "Are you f**king nuts?!". It cracks me up every time :D

Now that censors are pushing hard against gun crime in film due to the backlash, Fox have gone for the R with a couple of alternate takes that would have been saved for the inevitable unrated cut. It appears the film may have always been shot for PG13 with an R as an after thought. I hope it's the other way round but early reviews only seem to strengthen this conspiracy theory. :-[

Oh and just because the new DH is an R rating in the US doesn't mean it would be an automatic 18 here in the UK. Many US films are R rated because they don't have a 15 rating, it just goes from PG-13 to R, nothing in between. Many R rated US films are 15 here in the UK.

It would have been rated 15.
But it's been cut for a 12 rating.

I don't really think someones opinion on DH2 or DH3 makes any difference, plus that is all I've seen so far.
Anyway DH2 is a good action flick, it did what DH fans expected, give you loads of bloody gun fights, kick assery, an evil villain and swearing, its pure adult entertainment. DH3 is also good for trying a new formula which works but lacks the violent punch of DH2 for me.
Oh and I forgot to mention, just because one review says it's a bad movie, doesn't mean that every review will say it's a bad movie.

Live Free or Die Hard has 81%, I don't see why so many hate that movie. It's like the fourth Indy film, good action, but not that great.
Still wished they used GDTDH's other plot: Patrick Stewart as the film's main villain, a disgraced Russian general who plots the assassination of the visiting U.S. President.

I don't give a sheeeiit if Live Free or Die Hard was PG-13, it was extremely well made (Probably Bruce's best Die Hard performance too) and is easily the second best, if not first.

I think all 4 are at worst just not good, but I don't think even 3 and 4 are actively bad, just personal prefrence byy that point.
4.0 was excellent I thought, just the brutality was enough to get over the obvious down points.

I think internet archaeologists will get a kick out of Aspie.
Unlike the first two and the fourth, this one (Die Hard With a Vengeance) had absolutely nothing new to offer but the same old explosions and tiresome chases. It was redundant, pointless, and at times laughable. Not to mention there wasn't a single character other than Bruce's that the audience could give a damn for. The movie may be dumb fun at times, but mostly just a downer relative to the rest of the films.
I had a feeling that this movie would be the Terminator: Salvation of the Die Hard franchise.
Don't care what the reviews say, still gonna see it, it's die hard and it would have to do something really bad to make me hate it

Die Hard 3 is the best sequel to me. I really loved the story to that one and how it connected to the first one. And Jeremy Irons made a good villain.
And personally, I liked Max Payne. What was so bad about that one? Of course I've only seen the R-rated cut of the film.

Why take over an airport, crash planes and draw attention to yourself when they could have easily hijacked the plane (which the General did) and land it at some deserted airport? He would have been home free.

I'd have to watch it again (been a while), but I only remember being distracted by how artificial the 50s backdrop felt during that scene.
That said, the jungle setting of the ant scene looked even worse. :-\
When I go watch the Indy films, I go solely for the entertainment value. It's all the franchise has. So, when I compare each movie, Crystal Skulls is easily second best. I could care less about any "non-indy" characteristics. You can call it trolling all you want, but the movie was engaging. :P

again for the DVD/BR (not cheap for BR) to see the

I love Kermode but sometimes I do not agree on the whole, and though blockbusters have been continuing this maximising of profit by shooting for rating, I've still enjoyed plenty of brutal nasties from and beyond the Hollywood blockbuster. Cinema in't just the Hollywood studio flick. At least not to me.
Well it is a concern, for the UK anyway. I don't think cinema will die but this won't do it any good if other companies start doing the same. For adults cinema may become pointless for action/sci-fi/adventure flicks, why would you go to the cinema to see a cut down action film? a film you know has been cut down on purpose. You wouldn't, you'd wait till you can buy or download the full uncut version.
I mean I can see why this may become popular, cut down every adult film to a universal 12A to maximize sales/tickets/$$$. Then release the uncut version on DVD/BR for the films 'proper' audience. I'm sure that would equal even more $$$ because I'm sure some folk will go see the cut cinematic version and buy the uncut.
Unfortunately it could well see many UK adults not bothering with the cinema for certain films because we know they will be watered down, most will hold back for downloads probably.
Thing is will this even help DVD/BR sales? take the new Die Hard film. Even the full version is meant to be crapola, so not only will many UK cinema goers possibly not go to see it because its widely known the film has been cut down to a 12A. But they may not even bother buying it either because the full version is poor also, at least if the studio released the full version in the cinema most would probably go come what may because its Die Hard, but not now. This way the studio is really cutting its own throat I think and starting a bad trend.
Buy a plane ticket and fly to America if you want to see the R rated version. Or wait until it comes out on blu-ray and rent it for 5 bucks.
Here in the Netherlands it's rated PG13. Don't if it is a censored version or that we don't mind as much over here. I know Ted was rated PG13 over here when we got the exact same release the US got.

Just got back from seeing it, and I don't have much to say at all. It was kind of a nothing movie. Even Bruce Willis seemed to be half assing it.

I thought the movie was okay. Some of the acting was not very good and I found the story to forgettable. The action scenes are a ton of fun though. I think the movie was pretty soft for a R rating to be honest.

Die Hard is still in the realm of the mid budget action film ($60 - $90 million). I guess I'm just to the point that I don't see GDtDH as this big action flick in the series but rather the action equivalent of a later instalment from a well worn horror franchise (like a Halloween or Friday the 13th). It's just not much of an event picture for me. The trailers saw that it never registered more than a blip on my radar (same with Taken 2 which I have still yet to see).
Shame to see this film having such a bad reception, i personally thought Die Hard 4 was a pretty good sequel considering, i was hoping for more of the same with 5.
So the UK versions been cut down? Thats gay.

They need to go back to the roots of the first three movies. Go for a old school Die Hard feel to it.
It would be hard to go back and recapture the magic and intensity of the original Die Hard. Alan Richman owned every scene he was in. The way he walked in, took control, and slowly counted before shooting Mr. Nokitomi, or whatever (been a long time since I watched it again) and calmly stating we'll do it the hard way. I also like the scene where the cokehead guy thought he was going to handle Hans and was shot in the face. Even the other bad guys were great, like the blond, long haired german guy who freaked out when his brother was killed, and Mrs. Mclain/Genero knew John was still alive, cuz only John can piss somebody off that bad! Every minute of that movie you were hoping Mclain would get out alive. He, like the hostages, had no where else to go, so he had to fight to live. That kind of suspense hasn't been in any of the other films, even though I like them all and enjoy them.

Well this is good news, though I seem to remember this same box set being released without the Unrated Cut. It was an earlier news article.
Eh, the unrated cut of DH4 changes my favorite line in the movie, so I'm kind of indifferent.
I feel the same way (plus grumbles over digital blood), but its inclusion should finally stop people complaining. :D

Yes, it's using the same artwork from the most recent four film set (which Germany didn't get).
Chances are, whenever this new collection is released elsewhere, it'll feature a new design. Hopefully it'll still include the
Decoding Die Hard bonus disc as well. It's meant to be a good documentary.
Meh, I'll just buy DH 4 on Blu-Ray standalone. I already own the quadrilogy that was released back in '07 I think it was and I don't want the fifth film.
I made my best friend (who I'll name Shiranui *Amaterasu's previous [and true] incarnation*) sit through Live Free or Die Hard. Shiranui didn't like me a few days after that.

It's bad enough I make my dad sit through The Walking Dead. He claims to "hate the stupid show" but whenever it goes to commercial he freaks out. :laugh:
A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
Yippie ki...oh wait. McClane is back! again, this time its old man McClane as he's off to Moscow to help his son. Yep it seems the Die Hard franchise has gone the way of the Police Academy franchise, both in sequels, almost, both have finally ended up in Moscow, oh and both were crap.
Right from the start this doesn't feel like a Die Hard film. McClane turns up in Russia much to the disgust of his son and straight away they are bickering at each other, its all very annoying. What surprised me more was the fact the film centres on 'Jack' (McClane Jr.) and makes 'John' seem like a spanner in the works. They make Willis seem like an extra or sidekick, like he's getting in the way. On top of that the constant moaning by his son with that pouting face of his really pissed me off.
The next major major issue here is the entire idea itself. The film has no real plot, its very weak, in the realms of who cares. The whole film is completely driven by set pieces, one huge action sequence after another that get more and more absurd as the film goes on. Right at the start there is a an admittedly impressive and frantic looking car chase sequence, it starts off pretty sensible and grounded but the longer it goes on the more insane it gets. There are cars, vans, trucks flying everywhere, titantic crashes happening every second which will presumably be killing many many innocent people, glass and debris exploding everywhere...yet all the while our heroes cruise along in invincible mode.
This is pretty much what the film is about, its like watching an in-game videogame sequence. In fact its like watching someone play the campaign mode in Modern Warfare, the film is on rails moving from one gigantic action sequence to the next, you know the main characters will never die despite what they're going through is so ludicrous and unsurvivable its becomes funny.
The other issue I had was the lack of decent villains and the fact there appeared to be exactly four main villains!, yes four. Of course as you can imagine there is some double crossing/plot twists involved which is why we have four villains but essentially none of them are in the least bit memorable. End of the day they are just Russians, boring sounding, gruff faceless bad guys that you can't enjoy watching. Mind you I didn't give a hoot about McClane's son either, whining little shit.
Some of the moments in this film are really so pathetic. When both of our heroes are caught and facing execution from one of the bad guys, this guy does the Bond thing. Instead of just killing the heroes he just talks and talks...even to the point where the writers make him do a little tap dancing to pass the time!. I mean seriously what the fudge??!! just shut up and shoot them! oh my god so lame. Of course both of the heroes escape, McClane Jr. cuts his plastic ties with a blade (would take a long time wouldn't it?), but I'm still unsure how the hell Willis is suppose to have become magically untied.
They even have the audacity to copy some moments from the original classic. Remember when McClane catches 'Hans Gruber' and he does his little switch into an innocent civvy? well that happens again here with...errr one of the bad guys. We also get another similar 'Hans Gruber' moment when he was dropped off the top of the Nakatomi Plaza building. Plus there seems to be a fixation in this franchise for main bad guys getting killed in helicopters.
So yep McClane is on vacation, as he points out a hundred times, yet I thought he went to Russia to help his son, so when did it become a vacation? who cares. Visually this film is faultless, its glossy and slick as f*ck, you probably won't see any better vehicle stunts and action for quite some time. So yes its entertaining in that mindless popcorn sense but that's it.
Its no proper Die Hard flick in my eyes, just a run of the mill factory line action film drone with such unbelievable unrealistic sequences the main characters should have died at least five times over. Good to look at sure but even if this was an independent action film I would still say the same thing. A good day to end this franchise methinks...zing!.
