Rodriguez always finishes his movies on budget, or under budget, and the studio suits love that. Does anyone have a feeling that this is the reason?

I doubt it. The Strauses finished AvPR under budget too.

According to the interviews, it's because a producer saw the original screenplay and badly wanted it filmed. No more, no less!
