It's because a third person game wouldnt be very scary at all, It's also easy to get into the story when your seeing it happen through your eyes.

The Resident Evil games are a perfect example of a scary 3rd person game. It's all about atmosphere.

I always thought the Aliens games were about blasting aliens first and scariness second anyway. I just think the developers should get off their arses and give us something we havnt had yet.

Have you not played AvP1? That is why Aliens are suited for FPS. They can be so atmospheric.

I just like to see the character I'm playing - wuold be cool to control a marine and see it happening. Like I said, it works well for Resident Evil and Hitman is great too. I just think FPS aliens games are running out of steam, there's not a lot else that can be done with the idea now....they even made AvP-Extinction a strategy game so I think we deserve a third person game by now.

We all enjoyed the AvP and Aliens arcade games and Alien 3 on the consoles and I'm sure we all agree that Hitman and Resident Evil are great games - Hitman does have a FPS mode anyway but the cheat on AVP2 to make it third person sucks so Rebellion already thought of it.

I think it's because aliens are perfect for FPS. When ever I have a option in a game for 3rd or 1st person I go with 1st because it owns 3rd. It makes you feel like you are really there. The point is FPS owns and is perfect for a Alien game.

Alien Resurrection for PS was supposed to be third person.  They changed it for reasons already mentioned - more tension in a FPS.

I liked that game. It took me a while to realise that moving while shooting was a good idea.

Call's laser was fun. Lopping off Alien limbs with unlimited ammo was more entertaining than the entirety of the movie itself.

First-person games have a much more tense atmosphere than others. If you had a 3rd person camera, you would be able to see the aliens sneaking up on you too easily, & would detract greatly from the experience. Plus, it really makes you feel much more like the character you're playing when viewing the world through their eyes.

Many 3rd person games have great atmosphere, & can even be scary, as proved long ago with the Resident Evil & Silent Hill series. But in a game of this type, 1st person works even better for the scares & tension. After all, would games like Doom 3 have been half as nerve-racking with a 3rd person camera angle?

I haven't read the rest of this thread so someone else may have typed this, Gearbox might want to get fear across, so they'd but it in FP to get the chlaustrophobic feel across. Third person wouldn't feel as scary, more like an action game.

I agree that a 3rd person perspective would not have fitted this game's intentions. It's probably going to be a pretty claustrophobic experience (imagine crawling through the ducts in 3rd person... nice ass) so first person would do it best.

If it were a Predator game then I would have something different to say. Concrete Jungle didn't quite get it right (hardly anything were right in that game), but going third person with a predator in a jungle is something I'm still aching to see to this day. Maybe draw the camera a little closer to the character, like Gears of War-close. Yum..

I don't mind third person horror/scifi action games.  They just require lots and lots of setup to be scary since the third person view allows you to see attackers from all angles.

No point in having a motion tracker if you can see around corners with the camera perspective and see if anything is waiting for you.

It could be done, but it would feature the same thing that makes AvP2 not so scary on replays.  The scripting of story, action, and horror sequences.  AvP1 was scarier on replays because the AI respawned randomly and could follow you anywhere.

I disagree. I love 3. person for melee weapons, like a lightsaber in Jedi Academy etc.. When it comes to shooting it's 1. person only though.

The only game I played in 3. person and used ranged weapons was The Thing and only because it didn't have other options.

Anyone who thinks fps gaming is dead needs to go and play through calof duty 4 from start to finish.

That game rocked my world and the ending actually made me feel emotional, and its a fookin game ffs!

If we could have a game based around the aliens world and colonial marine tech that was made in the same approach as cod 4 it would be a dream come true.

P.s anybody who has played cod 4, imagine the sniper mission in chernobyl where u need to carry your fallen comrade to safety, but instead you have to fall back to the apc carrying a fellow marine whilst battling off an onslaught of warriors, that would be electric.

I remember how I longed for a better selection of first person shooters when I owned a Dreamcast.  That longing was carried through my ownership of a PS2 (even though Killzone was a very good game).  In hindsight, I should've owned an XBOX.  That was always where the fun was if rpg's weren't your thing.

I am so happy at the extent of support that first person shooters have gotten this generation...especially with the introduction of the 360.  I can't believe someone would even say its a dead genre.  To prove otherwise, no one needs to look further than previous generation of fps games on the console systems of the past.  It has grown so much since then.

The reason the Alien franchise works better in an FPS is because the series works best when it has a very claustrophobic vibe to it. Being in the tight space of an FPS creates that feeling. A 3rd Person works mostly in more open environments, and is more suited to something like Predator.

Agreed.
First-person shooters give you the feeling that you're actually in the mix (hence first-person).
Third-person is merely an observational standpoint and wouldn't add to the horror element the way a first-person game would.

Example:  If an Alien sneaks up on you from behind in a third-person game, you can see it before you even have to turn around, which lacks any real sort of shock or surprise.   But in a first-person game, that scenario can be f*ckin' freaky.

I just stated the obvious. :D
