Likewise. Stupid decision by me.

My former neighbour was an avid VHS collector/resellor. He once invited me over and said take a few of whatever I wanted. Found the old Alien Saga VHS boxset just sitting there. Thank you very much.

I think my brother has the original VHS release of Alien in his collection.

The 20th anniversary DVD is still one of my favourite home releases. One of the best uses of interactive DVD menus.

Having a close look at the main menu screen (when it first starts up), I spotted what looks like a subliminal image, of one of the guy's responsible for the production of the 20th Anniversary DVD (also the ALIEN / ALIENS Laserdisc boxed sets from the early 1990s).

It looks like a subliminal cameo. It's a flash frame of someone with a beard ... you'll have to be quick to spot it.

It's subtle. Look at the right and left edges of the frames.

Ah yes, I see it now.

I just had the Legacy dvd up on my projector last night (84" image) and it still looks great compared to the blu-ray, so I might watch that one more often!
Although the 2003 DVD has improved resolution, I prefer the 1999 release. It has better colours and isn't as contrast boosted as the 2003 DVD.

The 1999 DVD does show more image.

Thanks for sharing Elmazalman. I know it's pretty geeky but I love analyzing the differences with these transfers.

Thank you for that! (I'm not really seeing any cropping, though)

Interesting. I knew about the darkening of the film (you used to be able to see eggs in the chamber below Kane as he descends in the matte painting shot), but wasn't aware of the cropping. Any online comparisons you could point me to?

The ALIEN 4K disc has the same bonus features as the single BD release.

If you want ALL the bonus material - including the then fancy early DVD menu screens, then hang onto all the previous releases.

The ALIEN 20th anniversary DVD is still valuable for its raw production audio and alternate music track. As well as the film itself - a brighter image without the black crush and tight cropping, as later editions.

Yes I'm aware but it is as I outlined above.

Well I mean, all the Anthology bluray had was audio commentary and some deleted scenes, the vast majority of the special features were on a separate disc.
