Indeed, though at least it's made pretty apparent by that point in the film (When that factoid is revealed) that the character in question is sorta cocky and arrogant and thought it would be sure-fire. So it was at least consistent stupidity on their part.
I'd love to see a film in that vein, though. An alien in an alien environment and a team being stalked through it. There's so many potential scenarios that could be played out there.
True, it fit the character which is what is important, characters need to act realistically and true to what they are presented as. That character was cocky and her behavior fits it.
Which is where the Alien prequels screw up, a scientist is supposed to be someone who is logical and got a good head on them, instead we got Milburn, who thinks touching an unknown Alien lifeform is good idea....especially when you got a bunch of Engineer corpses which signals something bad has happened in that cavern, and said Alien lifeform is hissing and behaving aggressively.
Oram is probably the worst for stupidity though, while not a scientist, he did have foreknowledge of the threats and suspicion of David before sticking his head above an egg, I don't know how Ridley can compare him to Kane, when its not even the same. Kane was stupid but at least he didn't have as much knowledge as Oram.
I too would like to see a film in that vein, good characters and at least common sense behavior is a must. They need to avoid using terrible horror/slasher tropes.
