Hey, what do ya know it worked eventually...
I was able after like a year playing avp2 online finally!
and you know what's funny? i think the problem was in Xfire because it still made me that problem "version checking process failed", but however using the original way "find internet games" with AVP2 main menu i was able to join servers!

thanks alot DragonBossk and everyone who tried to help! looking forward to play with you online!  ;)

I think I had my first beer while playin online  :'( good memories

thanks anyway to all who tried to help  ;)

Oh god now you've made me go and feel all sympathetic. Ok first forget about the savior patch we'll just try and get the main menu to display.

1) First uninstall the game and delete everything in and including the Fox/AVP2 directory.

2) Load up disc 1 and install (to install the game the main menu has to display anyway), if the menu doesn't come up automatically double click the disc in My Computer. Switch the disc 2 and back to disc 1 when prompted. Don't bother installing gamespy when asked. Make sure a shortcut is created on the desktop.

3) Download and install the 1.0.9.6 patch xMx posted here:

http://www.avpunknown.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1276008198

4) Right click the desktop shortcut, go properties, under compatibility run under xp sp2 or sp3 compatability mode. Also make sure the "Run as administrator" box is ticked, an important step.

5) Making sure disc 1 is in your DVD drive double click the desktop shortcut and accept "yes" to run the program (Windows 7 should ask for your permission).

Now tell me if the main menu comes up. If it doesn't nothing can be done (except an OS install if you really want to take it that far).

The savior patch removes any CD check.
Wrong, I've just re-installed everything and did all the updates installations and it still requires a CD
DragonBossk, now I've redone everything (including deleting AutoUpdate), and still no good in opening the main menu..
maybe it's a problem of compatibility to Windows 7, AVP2 can't run at all neither from the CD or from the Application!
Anyways, I can run the AVP2 through Xfire, but still "The version checking process has failed"...
:-\ guess I'm lost

Since the original release? I haven't tried 1.5.3 yet (still on 1.5.2) but I know its always asked me for a disc. Never been a problem for me though.

By "vanilla" I meant non modded or patched in any way. But I'm sure the no-cd crack is what skips the main menu; simply load up AVP2 disc 1, go to options on the menu, in the command line enter -rez AVP2P5.rez .

This is assuming you have installed the Savior mod 1.5.3 installed already. Also the file I suggest you delete in your AVP2 directory is entitled "Autoupdate" and has the same picture as the .exe file.

Hopefully you can still use a no-cd crack after this, but I've never tried it myself and so can't be sure.

You never get the main menu? Even with vanilla avp2? As far as I know you need to enter avp2p5.rez in the avp2 options command line to get the master server patch communicating with the game. Lithfaq does mention running the mod installer as administrator can allow avp2p5 to be written.

Do you use a no-cd crack by the way or have the original discs?
vanilla avp2? what's that? by saying "running the mod installer" you mean that vanilla thingie?
and I use no-cd app and I installed with the original discs. it's comfirtable not to insert the avp2 cd everytime i play online   ;)

Go here

http://www.avpunknown.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1276008198

Download and install in the order you see.
That's not gonna help, I did install the programs the same way explained in the link.
DragonBossk, I deleted SirreaUpdate and AVPUpdate but still no good.

I think I'll re-install and try everything from the start once again, and by the way as I mentioned before, I never -rez'zed anything because the main menu refuses to open...

In addition to what xMx said try deleting any files relating to autoupdating in your AVP2 directory; I've found in the past they can leave the in game version checking to hang.
