I can understand being unaformed by somthing but this I'm seeing is pathetic, if you where born in or around 2000 you're ok but for every stupid teen i've met born 90's or earlier how in the world have you not herd of the Predator or Alien movies!!!!! I met this guy who SAW Predators on dvd recently, he liked it, I said how about Predator 1&2 ? He was like whats that? He had no idea there was such a thing! My cousins girlfriend had seen AVP, I said have you seen the previous Alien and Predator movies? she thought AVP was just some random movie made, what the heck? and I've met about 20 individuals with similer cases how in the world did they not hear or see these movies. Does enybody agree with me these teens are stupid!
It's bad when they haven't seen them, and its worse when they claim that AVP has better action and a better story than Alien.

It should be a requirement before anyone is allowed to watch AVP, that they must first watch at least one Alien and one Predator film first. Even my 8 year old has seen Predator 2 already (the edited for tv version) so this kind of thing won't happen in her generation. I blame the parents for this post.

Well, it is ok for someone to actually like AVP who also appreciates the Alien and Predator films. It is just a matter of personal interest. It is a different scenario for non Sci Fi audiences to watch a film with an integrated franchise and not make an effort to understand the background of the implementation before opening their mouths to one who holds a genuine interest in both movie monsters.
At least, this is my understanding of the original topic question...or maybe it's time for some coffee!

I remember A:R coming out in 1997 and I was born in 1991. I was not a fan as a kid but I do have some memories of me watching parts of Aliens and Predator 2 when I was four or five.
I shit you not the first film my father ever put on for me was Predator! I still tahnk him to this day for it as i would probably not be a fan like i am!
AVP was a movie that was feel dump down for teenagers afterall. That's issue with kids today from 2000-2011 that are so restricted to things now and as a kid, my Mom or Dad did not care what I watch or played as long I don't try to do anything that I see on TV in real life.
Back in the late 80's and early 90's you had cartoon shows based on R rated movies and now you don't. Too bad this generation is born and rised of the first AVP movie.

OK, I know I'm in for a beating but here it goes right to the point:
These "stupid people" who like AVP out of let's say, ignorance, might not be interested in the previous films now. But...they might be interested later and decide to watch them. Where as, if they had never watched AVP they would have never been motivated to even consider watching any of them. AVP might bring a new generation of sci fi film goers which puts money into the franchise for continuation.

I was talking to a friend, when AvP came up, I mentioned that people get angry when one Alien takes out 2 Predators, technically one if you count that one was caught off guard, but people find it perfectly fine when one Predator takes out thousands of Aliens without a scratch.

Those Preds were taken out by a Predalien. The Aliens in the other films were taken out by humans and since the audience automatically assumes humans are the weakest of the three species, it makes the Aliens look really bad.
Well the Aliens are meant to be stealth animals. A1, the Alien took an entire crew down. A2, the marines were picked off from the shadows, were they not? Nearly every time, it was either above, below, or surprise BUTTSECKS LOLOL. A3, nearly the same method for the beginning horror.
Young people not knowing the older movies doesnt bother me at all. As weird as it is, its no evil, its just a form of ignroance or simply not being interested in movies or the genre that much. Thats why we're better off without 'fans' like that. As long as there are fans that prefer a low budget monster film lacking any heart or substance we will never get another alien or predator film on par with the originals. I hope Ridley will prove me wrong.
The casual audience will fit the majority of that department. As much as many of us, including me, hate to say it; we need these people. Fox will only make these movies if lots of people will want to see it; lot of people meaning the casual audiences because let's face it, they outnumber the truly die-hard fans like us. The casual audience just wants to see blood, violence, etc. while we want good plot and story. The casual audience expects an AVP film to have lots of action, we expect one to have good storytelling. Sorry mate but this is the sort of bullshit excuses fox keep feeding us. The general audience would more likely go see a film if it has substance and great action/thrills etc than mindless monster-fest. Theres a reason that Alien/Aliens always makes it onto best movie list, from multiple genres too. AVP:R will only ever make the shit list. If fox brought out a fantastic Alien movie (again fingers crossed for the prequel) more and more casual movie fans will go and see it. Word and mouth is a powerful tool.

Nothing's wrong with liking any movie at all. Its just the reason for liking them is saddening. Because there was more Predator in it or it was more visible then the movie is better than others? I mean, what happened to the story? Characters? Script? Cinematography? Music? Editing? Heart? Pacing? Acting?

Not at all. Personally I like AVP for what it is but it is mearly a shadow of the classics. I would love to see something of the caliber of those classics return, but if these B-Grade films are continually profitable, there will be no reason for the studio to seek talented writers and film makers.

Actually AVP wasnt that bad and it did have a buildup. It was also shot well and had plenty of signature Alien movie elements

Don't worry about it. Hate is a pretty strong word. When some fans, like us, say they like what a good part of the community regards as a "bad" movie, we're bound to get some arguments flung our way. I like AVPR a lot and even tho lots of other fans on this site continuously criticize me about that, all of us still respect each other knowing that we each have our own preferences and b*tching about it isn't going to change anything.

It's not the fans the make the movies low budget, it is the executives looking for the easiest dollar in the film industry itself.
Respectively, it is upsetting when those of us who do have a true knowledge of the franchise history run up against those who don't in converstation. As a mom, I am doing my part to prevent this in my household lol but, it is because of
the fans that keeps this franchise going. Even the lesser of the fans put money into this franchise and money is what keeps it coming back to the theaters, the comics back on the shelves, and engineers behind the games.
I like AVP. Sure I get a lot of heat for it, and often receive condescending remarks over having my own opinion, but thats ok it's your opinion and your entitled to it. I was watching Sci Fi films before most of you were teenagers yourselves, so while I respect your views please keep in mind that some of do have an opinion outside of your own with an honest real history behind it.

Well put! Honestly though, every generation does have this problem, especially with science fiction. I am still amazed how many kids do not know there was an original Star Treck. Really missing out lol. Even more amazed how many young engineers in this area do not even know we lost two space shuttles :'(. How do get into this field without knowing its history? Just like these kids speculating on the AVP films without knowing the history.
Since I see all EU to be canon, when someone asks how the A:R scientists never found out about the Alien invasion on Earth in the EU, I'll just say, "Hey, you'd be surprised how many people there are in both the real world and the fictional world who don't know what are seemingly the most obvious things," and then point to this thread. :laugh:

It is not considered canon by the community and only those in the community who choose to believe that. Fox has never issued any statement regarding this issue. For me, just because the community says it isn't canon, that isn't good enough for me. My sources need to be a little higher than fan opinion. Some fans expunge certain Alien, Predator, and AVP movies from canon simply because they don't like it. I can't follow in these footsteps and say I'm a fan dedicated to the facts in the AVP universe.
I see. Though if there's no saying of what is to be considered as canon by publisher, hard to say what to accept or not. I think most important is not contradicting the first movie (or state something that destroys some of the cult- sw ep one in my eyes...), and keeping the continuity. If any comics or books do, you think it's part of da canon?
If they do, I can retcon it in. Besides, the definition of what's considered canon or not canon in this franchise is held very loosely. Many claim that AVPR defies Alien movie canon, though I can't understand why as I've retconned all the "contradictions" in a very logical pattern. I guess some people just don't want to drop their beliefs. :-X
avp-r? aliens on earth. canon I guess is not only a logical, but kinda strictly emotional bond of like or dislike. Like nobody said preds are not sons of robocop, but they aren't. I think canon is logical and emotional thingy as well. Like magic.
Would've fit wonky-out if they didn't show that at the government's (no, not a restaurant, silly) they had that cool little clip showing an Alien smiling to the camera for the photoshoot.
I mean, wasn't Ripley fighting against aliens so the beasties can't even touch humanity? There wouldn't be even a logical problem (lost data, not recorded, bought by yutani corp whatevs), but aliens on earth? Not a good idea.
