1.

did the predator kill jim hopper and all of his men? was the man executed just prior to the attack on the camp one of  hopper's men? if not who was he?

2.

what was it  that the CIA was after? was the russians about to capture a predator? someone said something about "something big was about to go down here". was that the big thing?

I'm sure some others will have better recollection than I do it's been awhile since I've seen the original film.

1. I was under the impression that the Predator did end up killing Hopper and his men which is of course where we find the skinned bodies later.
2. While I can't say for certain on this since it has been a bit since I last saw the movie I would assume that the Russians had been present but so was the Predator.
To expand on this, we know the OWLF got involved with Dutch after his encounter with it and then Stargazer later had a photo of the Jungle Hunter. Of course since they didn't have a JH suit to work with it uses a shot from the movie. However we can overlook that since we know JH or members of his group and or race would frequent the area seeing as Anna knew at least something was out there. Overlooking where the specific image came from in the real world we know Stargazer was familiar with it.

I don't know if that was what specifically Dutch was out there for, but we do know that the OWLF/Stargazer knew about it.

do you mean stagazer was aware of the predator prior to the events of Predator?

They did have a photo of it and we know the OWLF knew to go to Dutch. It would at the very least imply they knew something was up which makes sense since even Anna knew something was out there. In The Predator it's in the lab where Brackett is using her tablet and she flips by a shot of JH and City Hunter. The shot of JH states that it is dated for June 30th 1987, the location where the shot was taken (maybe this tells us where the film took place?), its case I.D and presumably the name of the agent who got the photo.

Of course we know in the real world how they got the photo but in-universe someone got a shot of JH or one of his people.

Dillon's men were in a surveillance helicopter. They got hit with a heat-seeker missle and crashed in the trees. The guerillas climbed up, shot the pilots each once with one round to the head, then stripped the helicopter and took two men as hostages. One of them was most likely executed in that scene you saw.

Hopper and team #2 were then sent in to find out what happened to Dillon's men and the surveillance helicopter. Hopper's men were all killed too, this time by the Predator, asummingly while camouflaged because Hopper's men fired in all directions. Some of Hopper's men were skinned there and some taken elsewhere by the Predator. There was no tracks.

The big thing was an invasion. Dillon explained that they were looking for that camp for months, that they just stopped a major invasion and in three days the invasion would have occurred.

Hope that helps!  :)

1.  The Predator didn't kill Hopper's men - IT SKEENED THEM ALIFE!  The guy shot in the camp was probably one of Dillon's guys.

2.  The CIA was very big on destabilising and/ or backing one side or another in Central/ South American civil wars.  Usually the right wing side who were often being opposed by communists.  Dillon's original CIA team would've gone in there originally to deal with or gain intel on the guerrillas but were shot down.  Hopper went in to get them out and got nailed by the Predator.

oduodu

thanks gentleman. that does help indeed.

it clears up a lot of the confusion.

They can make a pretty awesome prequel to The Thing an still call it the Thing. But we still havent seen the prequel to Predator which this OP makes me ask the question. Im sure someone can come up with a pretty good story from the Russian soldier's perspective...possibly have someone else play the roles of a  Anna Gonsalves and Dillion or just have them de-aged.
The two would have to be part of the story since they are pretty central in the original.

and holyshit, if somehow if Laurence Fishburnes in it or a special secret appearance by anyone from the Predators movie. That would be dope!

OWLF

Jim Hopper never died. He is alive and well working for the Hawkins Police Department.

A prequel would be great for the franchise (imo) - start with a story that the creators wanted to focus upon (I have read that they wanted the setting to be 1700s time frame). Focusing on the hunt and the tension/horror/fear aspects of humans being hunted by an alien would be a breath of fresh air compared to the last movie, which I thought was a complete miss.
