You're shooting Alien: Covenant right now. What can you tell us about it?
I'm the pilot of the spaceship Covenant, which is a colonization ship, searching for a planet where we might start life anew. I run the ship.
Are you in a harness for eight hours a day, yelling at a green screen?
No, I didn't know if it would be all green screen, but most of the stuff is practical effects: when you're running from an alien it's really a dude in an alien suit coming after you! The sets are incredible and you're in them: We go through some inclement weather at one point on the spaceship and this whole gigantic set is on a gimbal, shaking up and down. You don't have to use your imagination.
What's the most impressive thing about Ridley Scott?
He's got so much energy, and he shoots everything with four cameras. We move through stuff fast. When I got here some people said, "Oh man, he does two takes, three takes, tops," but I love it. It creates this attitude on set of, like, "You better f**king come with it because you've got two shots — you better bring it."
Original article is on their website, and for some reason I can't copy it, plus the interview pasted oddly but you get the idea. That's everything that is Covenant related.
Danny will be a worthy successor to Tom and Idris. ;D
Really pleased that there will be a live practical Alien in the movie, just like the original!
This is going to be good!! 8)
I'm kinda surprised he's not the ship's botanist or demolitions expert.
Looks like you were right about him being the pilot of the ship Corporal. Although the fact that he "runs" it could also imply that he's the captain as well.
Also good to hear that we'll be getting dudes in suits again.
Tom was the captain, though. Pilot could be something like Ferro from aliens
QuoteI'm the pilot of the spaceship Covenant, which is a colonization ship, searching for a planet where we might start life anew.
I really like how they are exploring this. It wasn't really touched on in Aliens how or why they set up a colony on that planet. Maybe there are lots of these ships searching for planets in the Alien universe. Exciting possibilities.

It would be interesting to see him play a serious role. He knows a lot of about film, too, and I think he respects Scott a lot, and will want to try and do the best possible job that he can; it's not everyday you get to be in a Scott movie, after all.

Well I wasn't implying so with the marijuana use. Wasn't there a suggesting that it was to be used medicinally when the crew come out of hibernation. The captain would insist they all consume it for there own well being!
Considering just how much of PROMETHEUS was actually done in cgi, I'm sceptical about the amount of purely practical effects that will be used in this sequel. Not that I'm against a good cgi effect here and there when it's done well. However, I still cringe at the poorly-done shot of the 'Engineer's suit' attaching to the 'tubes on the chair', sadly. Considering that should have been a terrific 'money shot' moment for ALIEN fans, it turned out to be a boringly-angled, side-on shot with some very dodgy cgi movement indeed, I reckon. (So much so, that I'm actually planning to cut it from my re-edit of the movie altogether!)
However, I still have high hopes for a good continuation of the story overall, with this next one...but I won't let it's eventual trailers build my expectations as high as I did with PROMETHEUS. I just hope for some creepier/scarier-looking 'xenomorphs' than the 'deacon baby' turned out to be...
By the way, judging by Sigourney's latest comments, it seems very likely that Neil Blomkamp's movie will indeed be an 'alternative route' which totally disregards the ALIEN 3 and ALIEN RESURRECTION movies altogether - www.io9.gizmodo.com/the-eventual-aliens-sequel-will-wipe-alien-3-and-resurr-1783225719 and a further article here - www.aintitcoolnews.com/node/75618

I could see an alien chasing him down the hall. 8)
Well, anyone who's seen Tropic Thunder will know he's handy with a flamethrower. :P
Running away from an Alien - yikes...
I don't know why, but all of a sudden I can't stop thinking about the recent X Files episode "Mulder and Scully meet the Were-Monster" - the part where the monster is chased off frantically flailing his arms in the campest way as he minces away because he got scared even though HE is the monster. lol .
But seriously - no comic relief from Mcbride this time please - we had enough tomfoolery in Prometheus. A scary not overly gory suffocating nail-biting edge of your seat film is what I'd really like to see this time.
Its good to hear they are using physical objects rather than all CGI. One of the things I liked when viewing the Prometheus DVD extras, is how imaginative and creative the props guys were using liquid that responds to soundwaves, and of course another excuse to whip out a condom and see what effects can he achieved with it.
Even the pups/mapping orbs were basically balls on a stick - I think I actually loved the props more than I did the movie.(except that engineer's flute - would rather forget about that - lol)
Lol this is Ridley Scott, you aren't dealing with the Strause brothers.
Corporal Hicks, I didn't realise that those Sigourney comments were from a while back either. ::)

Yes i mean im not excited to see the Alien or how this story pans out with Prometheus tied in BUT to see Danny act...or a twist hell be a lenient captain and he plays himself again :D would be a big twist as all the captains were so strict in the universe before it would be nice to see a "i dont give a shit, i just deliver the cargo, leave me alone to smoke some weed, a real coward" captain who would leave everyone behind xD
Imagine they surprise people and make him such an alpha male he makes Janek look like Carter Burke lol?

This actor's never been on my radar, but he sounds like a good guy and what a dream opportunity for him to stretch out of his mould!
There were slithers of humor from characters such as Brett and Parker, Hudson, etc, Resurection went a bit too far with the comedy the tone felt off. The humor in Prometheus from Milbourne and Fifeild wasn't such a winner with audiences either. Sounds like Danny McBride is telling us this is a more straight horror.

Ditto. This is very good news. Alien was a film with unknowns, so the actors really didn't have a to worry about audience expectations, as much, especially with Sigourney Weaver. But McBride alrady has a reputation as a comedic actor who's mostly played silly roles. This will be a completely different kind of film for him. I know he's a very knowledgeable about films (as demonstrated in Tropic Thunder) but I wonder if he can pull off a serious role such as this, in an Alien film.

Indeed. A little well-placed humor, even ironic, can benefit audiences during a suffocatingly tense scene. Yet can still leave apprehension with the delivery of circumstance and atmosphere.
There's also dark humor.
How much humor did The Thing have? Not very much. I'd say if Ridley's Covenant had as much as that movie, I'll be as happy as a pig in shit.
The only humor that movie possessed was when MacCready turned around and saw Norris' severed head sitting in the doorway. He remarks "You gotta be f**king kidding!" ... or words to that effect - which was not only contextually appropriate but also a great tension reliever after we'd seen Norris chest abruptly burst open without warning and sever the doctor's arms with rows of shark like teeth embedded in its chest cavity. What a f*cking amazing scene!
It worked as humor because it was the most appropriate piece of dialogue at the tail end of a shocking scene where no other response would be adequate. Even then it's not LOL material, but rather a dark, stress relieving moment that is well placed in a movie that is otherwise on the edge of yer seat suspense. We're not laughing here because it's an intentionally funny gag - we laugh because we need to.
'The Thing' is a great movie for its overall lack of laughs and it's cold and uncompromising somber tone. It looks like 'ALIEN: Covenant' is definitely heading in this direction and it's welcome.

I don't think the comments mean we won't be seeing any levity at all. I imagine we'll get a Parker/Brett-esque kind of lightness at times. But it's nice to know it wont be any silly humour. As above, I'd be happy with The Thing level of tone.

New details from McBride-
Comic actor Danny McBride says he has been sworn to secrecy about his work on the new Alien movie from director Ridley Scott.
The US star, known for his roles in comedy films such as Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express, will play the pilot of a spaceship in Alien: Covenant, Scott's second prequel to his 1979 horror classic.
The film, which is due for release in August 2017, is a follow-up to 2012's Prometheus and also stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace.
McBride told the Press Association: "I got a f****** document of like 10 pages of everything I'm not allowed to say about it."
"I'm having a blast on that movie. It's awesome. I'm the pilot of the spaceship, the Covenant. It's a colonisation ship. It's full of couples."
"We're setting off to find a planet that we're hopefully going to colonise and s*** doesn't go as planned."

Loving the simple premise. Colonists set out to discover a brave new world to seed with life, discover an amazing uncharted paradise planet, then all hell breaks loose when they get more than they bargained for.
More and more this is sounding like the movie Prometheus should have been. Although I enjoyed that movie for what it was, I was still disappointed with it for what it wasn't.

Quote"I'm the pilot of the spaceship Covenant, which is a colonization ship, searching for a planet where we might start life anew. I run the ship."
Looking at a few of McBrides quotes, it's rather odd that all these couples would just randomly travel through space hoping to find some habitable planet where they can start live anew in a COMPANY spaceship choked up with weed and piloted/captained by a rather scruffy and iffy looking character.
Why would W-Y spend money on a venture such as that? You'd usually send out probes first to find a suitable planet. W-Y would also want to be assured of a return on their investment so the planet would obviously need to be rich in precious metal or mineral wealth before sending anyone anywhere.
It just doesn't add up, unless W-Y is running some kind of coffin ship (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffin_ship (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffin_ship)) scheme of dubious legality.
I'm sure their mission will be fleshed out further in time, but I'm assuming they get taken off course from their original destination or the planet was probed and deemed a paradise without realizing its an engineer world.

I don't think we can draw any conclusions to the qualifications of McBride's character as of yet. I've seen some brilliant people at my employment who look a little rough around the edges. For example, one of my coworkers has a PHD in particle physics, but you wouldn't think twice if you saw him as a Walmart greeter.
My first thought when I read "colonization ship" in the synopsis was of a large slower moving ship carrying a large group of colonist as a generational ship, or possibly asleep. I even speculated that this ship might have been launched years before the Prometheus mission.
According to the Weyland industries timeline
1) Hypersleep chambers were patented in 2030
2) FTL was discovered in 2032
3) First FTL ship was built in 2034
So it's possible that the Covenant was launched around 2035-2040 and had FTL/Hypersleep capabilities. Here are a few random thoughts.
1) Maybe the Covenant was launched on a predetermined route and automated to search for habitable planets. The crew is awakened once the computer finds a suitable planet.
2) Maybe David puts two and two together that planet Paradise is actually along this flight path and bides his time, or maybe he sends the ship a signal to change course and come to him. In any event, it's possible that it didn't take David ten years to get from LV223 to Paradise, but that is how long he waited for the Covenant get there.
3) Maybe David communicated with the Company about the events on LV223? David asked for research materials, and the company offered up the crew of the Covenant in exchange for tech.
If all of them are couples maybe Daniels its already pregnant of Ripley....
The couples/colonisation ship angle reminds me of Ark in Space, which is a Dr Who serial that has a few similarities to Alien. 'Elizabeth Shaw' being another Dr Who connection.
Of course it has been in a lot of other stuff, too. Pandorum being one of the most recent.

To me the Ark in Space concept makes a lot of sense. It's possible the Covenant was launched without FTL closer to 2030. If the movie takes place around 2100, that would allow the Covenant to travel 60-70 LY at sub-light speeds.
Why would writers go this route?
It could be used to explain why the ship of filled with couples, and why they sent ships filled with people instead of probes. A small sub-FTL probe might lack the capabilities and propulsion storage to get anywhere close to light speed to be useful.
It also provides a jolt when the crew gets to Paradise and they find David waiting. If we assume the crew is unable to communicate with Earth in real-time, they pretty much have to take David's word for anything he says.
Wow, the couples thing took me by surprise but I like it.

Makes sense, but that would rule out another David being on-board (as the Corporal claims) if they left earth decades before the Prometheus expedition. You also have the issue of the Covenant being a Weyland - Yutani ship. The merger between the two companies only happened sometime
after the events of Prometheus. So that would effectively rule out that theory.
I guess we'll have to wait and see how they fleshed-out the story.

Oh your right. I forgot about the David on board the Covenant. There were different David models, so it's possible that the Covenant is sporting an older model. What we might get is something along the lines of a David 8 vs David 3 or David 4.
David 8 : David on the Prometheus. He was a new model at the time the Prometheus was launched.
Weyland builds and successfully deploys thousands of Seventh Generation Davids into workplaces across the universe. Human acceptance of David 7 reaches an all-time high thanks to Weyland's highly classified emotional encoding technology, David 7 can accurately replicate most human emotions down to the tiniest nuance while consistently achieving all mission objectives.
JULY 6, 2068
David 6 : Only 7% of humans can recognize the sixth generation of David as a cybernetic individual.
FEBRUARY 26, 2062
David 5 : Weyland makes significant intellectual and emotional updates to the David android, further increasing human acceptance.
JULY 7, 2052
David 4 becomes the first commercially available model of the David series. He is eventually expected to improve work-flow and efficiency at offices and homes across the world.
APRIL 1, 2042
After android regulations are lifted, the third generation David is deployed internally in order to test human acceptance of cybernetics individuals. Results are encouraging.
JUNE 30, 2035
Weyland makes significant adjustments to the David android prototype, facilitating David's first interaction with humans. This initial meeting is very promising.
JANUARY 1, 2028
Well, I think my theory is shot about the Covenant being an old-tech space ark type colonization ship. One small "item" blows that idea out of the water. The Weyland-Yutani patch
The patch on the crew clothing pretty much means that the Covenant must have launched after the events in Prometheus in order for the corporate merger to have happened.

Nope, pretty much just repeating what he's already said. He was honored to be apart of it, its gonna be great, thinks fans will really dig it, and its really dark, a straight horror movie.
And he got to choose his weapon, which is a shotgun. And reiterates that shit hits the fan fast.

Everyone knows shotguns are the weapon of choice for pest control.
I like that he got uncomfortable acting across from Fassbender, never having been in a movie with an android, before, and becoming uncomfortable when the person across from him never, ever showed any emotion. I loved that, in Prometheus, with David 8, but I think it will be a lot better in a more Alien-like setting, like with Ash--never reacting. Just watching.

Also a good choice for use on spaceships. Less chance of a hull breach.
Also great for people who can't aim.
True on both counts. I like me some sci-fi guns so I'm hoping we get a better look at it and it's actually something with some effort put into it.
And not like the Prometheus guns which were just regular weapons with bits painted orange :P

If Prometheus is loosely a remake of Alien then it stands to reason that as a sequel Covenant will more than likely be remake of ALiens.
Loosely speaking of course.

Prometheus wasn't really a remake of
Alien at all, though.
Prometheus was more closely a remake of Alien vs. Predator. Even then it's a stretch.
Danny McBride speaks about how he's sworn to secrecy whilst still letting out on a tid bit about the crew and who they all are . In an interview with the pressassociation he had this to say.....
"I got a f****** document of like 10 pages of everything I'm not allowed to say about it.
"I'm having a blast on that movie. It's awesome. I'm the pilot of the spaceship, the Covenant. It's a colonisation ship. It's full of couples.

Its possible to extrapolate that McBride's pilot lives until, most likely the 3rd act, I'd say. Given what he says about having dinner with a dwindling cast. That would mean he survives longer than most.
