I also miss that line myself, but I can compromise for such an embarrassment of riches this version provides overall.

Can't wait for that podcast! I'll be rewatching the official theatrical cut to see how that one compares to the A34K after some time.

The only real criticism I personally have against the new cut (which is otherwise brilliant) are the replaced sound effects, especially of the creature which is extremely noticable to me and sticks out like a sore thumb. The Alien Isolation, and to some of extent, the Aliens, creature sound effects just feel wrong to me in here.

That's just my biggest nitpick, but the comping of the rod puppet alone is absolutely incredible, of course.

I must say that didn't really bother me, but I'll pay more attention to that when I'll do a rewatch.

I thinks it's interesting to hear feedback as the years go by with the original cut of Alien 3. For people who've seen it in film(depending on the print quality and amount of artifacts on the colloid)it always seems to be that the film looked better.

The contrast and texture that 35mm gives is what's so engaging to wrap our heads around visually. I think about the original two alien films, and how those tactile elements of film really lensed itself to the darker atmosphere and characteristics of the alien franchise that we know and love.

I apologize to the mods for my celluloid geek-out.

@THEXEN0PLAYS

As I got deeper into the interview, it made me wonder if A34K created any LUTS or color profiles close to the original negative, to match specific shots, as they tweaked elements such as the sharpening, highlights, and shadows. I know this was predominant in the POV shots already.

Thank you for bringing up this lovely gem! I had the decency of getting the 8 bit copy for myself as my CPU isn't ready for anything much bigger than that. As I like to view my stuff on USB 8bit is a very personal bitrated version as I can never find myself plugging into 3.0 or only on infrequent occasions which tells you that I'm a casual film buff.

I really  wonder if their comments are from their own personal copies because
1. I see there was dialogue they mentioned that was cut (the rapist and murderers of...) and my copy has that in there. the very same copy they official email had linked to.
2. They state a film grain algorithm which I really feel added to the realism and the natural nuances to the organic mature of films themselves. I wonder if their own opinions are from a NON-FILM grain version. Which I don't believe they mentioned in their own words. But it is great to hear their opinions such that every opinion counts!

So, having skipped through it briefly on the MacBook whilst I was away, I finally got to sit and enjoy it in 4k, on a large screen 4k tv and watch it in all its glory.

Bravo! Very well done, and overall could easily become a 'go-to' version for viewing.

If I were going to give constructive nit-pick, there are two amendments I'd personally make;

1: re-include the Facehugger in the opening (I get the intention in making the reveal later a surprise, and it was edited so well, but for me personally I'd have liked the edit from the workprint with the Facehugger but no egg, in keeping with Fincher's intention.

2: the new sunrise at the end: whilst beautifully done (it'll make a nice wallpaper actually!) I think I'd drop it.. 1 - for continuity, as you have the sun rising on the same side of the planet as it sets earlier in the movie (which doesn't make sense), and 2 - because every other revision made is either an edit, or a tasteful redo of the special effects to match the original movie.. this was the only shot that doesn't belong (in any cut). I'd personally drop it.

Beyond that, fantastic and very professionally done, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

By the way, did I miss an update? What happened to the "for the last time" line that was going to be reinserted? It seemed to be missing? 😊

They felt it tonally dissonant and not up to the qualitative standards of the rest of the film, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Quote from: Nowe on Jun 06, 2025, 12:03:12 PMOne thing I strongly disagree with A34K is his decision to cut out this incredible line by Dillon: "this is as good a place as any to take your first steps to heaven..."

Not only does it add to his character, but it is just so badass.

I'm guessing the reasoning behind its removal is the whole 'murderers and rapists' on one hand and the idea of 'heaven' on the other. But since one of the main points of the movie is redemption of humanity by the hands of its worst scum, something oddly profound is lost by removing this line.

Anyway...

I didn't remove this line for any reason like that, I just removed it because it sounded clumsy and clunky. Dillon repeats the line "the only question is..." twice, meaning neither instance is the only question. I just preferred the punchier Theatrical cut in this instance.

We added the line back in after getting feedback

We still wrestle with this decision. It was about 51% 49% at the time, and it still plays on mind

There actually isn't a contradiction as there was no sunset in the original shot, just a bleak skyline. We get that when there are this many changes, there will be some people don't like, but we felt it was a nice touch at the end to show the sun rising on Ripley's sacrifice, signifying hope. Plus it syncs up really well with the score.

That said we're always happy for feedback :)

The biggest problem with Alien 3 is that nr 4 came.... but that was soooo horribly wrong, that A3 got attention again.

Yeah but we cant blame A3 for it. It intended to finish the series and indeed finished Ripleys story and the trilogy.
