I am glad to see a stand alone alien film again, regardless of when it will actually be released. (After Prometheus 2, so presumably 2017?) I can see a possible route to a sequel to Aliens which would not erase Alien 3 and Resurrection from the official canon, but it does raise some issues.

Neil has stated that the new film would not undo the events of Alien 3 or Alien Resurrection(retconning them as hypersleep nightmares of Ripley or anything to that effect). Thus, i got to thinking about how this could be balanced. The one notion that came to mind would involve the events of this film to take place between Aliens and Alien 3 in the timeline. (Which may or may not have already been hinted at in the various interviews regarding the new film)

To to do this though would require that Hicks and Ripley wake up from cryosleep sometime after the events of Aliens, but Newt and Bishop are left in their cryotubes for the duration of the film. This raises the issue that others have brought up in other topics here, mainly the fact that Michael Biehn and Sigourney Weaver have noticeably aged, making it hard to explain how the characters they are to portray would have apparently aged as well.  If the "something gets messed up with their cryotubes, but not for newt's or bishops" route is to be taken, it wouldn't make sense for she and Hicks to be found in them once again during the events of Alien 3's opening sequence.

With Hicks the cgi burns on his face and makeup and digital effects could make him look relatively younger, but It'd be pushing it with Sigourney(no offense to her as she is an amazing actress and still looks decent for someone in her 60s).
But with that potential problem aside, a plausible film could indeed take place and do very little, if any damage to the established canon of the alien film universe. All that's needed is for Hicks and Ripley to survive the events of this film and have the events which Alien 3 opens with follow said events. What this can do is give a plausible way to have another alien film, which could include a return to the post-atmosphere processor devastated lv-426, and do the nifty trick of explaining how that egg got there in alien 3, which has always remained a convenient, yet unexplained plot device for that film.
It is also my guess that the film will most definitely not go by the title "Alien 5". I suspect it will Aliens: insert subtitle here. Aliens: Epilogue or something along those lines.
How about changing the ending of alien 3 ( check out my forum alternative ending for alien 3)

One of my concerns is studio interference from FOX, i don't want the studio breathing down Blomkamp's neck stating they want it at a certain run time to enable more screenings at the theatres, or making Blomkamp edit down certain plot aspects so it's more accessible to the mainstream viewer. I also hope they don't try and go the pg 13/12a route and make it a jumpfest with very little in the way of horror, remember the talk that was coming out've fox when Scott changed Alien:engineers to Prometheus and the studio was getting cold feet over the 18 certificate which scott was pushing for. They need to let Blomkamp and his production team get on with this film with minimal interference, don't get me wrong there will always be some form of the studio checking up on production, as theyre the guys which are financing the whole thing, but we don't want is excecs coming in and having walls repainted because they're too dark or saying it's too gory, when the whole franchise itself is adult horror/thriller. I also hope Scott dosen't come wading in too much cutting too many links to the derelict engineer craft, it's obvious if they're pursuing the script from the concept art ideas, the derelict engineer craft needs to be addressed and it can be done without treading on prometheus 2.

A lot of the studio interference on Prometheus came from the then CEO and Chairman Tom Rothman. Apparently he has a reputation for fiddling with films and making pointless changes. He's since left Fox and is now CEO at Sony Pictures which is probably why Blomkamp jumped ship. Not sure what the new regime at Fox is like, guess time will tell.

Don't know how much influence Ridley will have on the new Alien film but I think it's safe to say if he asks Blomkamp to jump, Blomkamp will jump. No-one says "no" to Sir Ridley anymore.  :)

Two films with little to no enduring popularity.  The mere fact that they exist isn't enough to stay bound to them, imo.

...which doesn't "mess with established continuity" at all. It's poorly explained, yes, but it's hardly an outright destruction of what came before.

Comparing an egg with ill-defined origins to completely scrapping two entire films is a pretty daft comparison.

I'm talking about the magic egg.  I've never supported the notion that EU is canon.

Quote from: Kelgaard on Apr 27, 2015, 11:26:39 AMThat film messed with established continuity too, and wasn't good enough to justify doing so.

It's not the fimmakers' job to pander to a bunch of comic books.

It would have to be pretty bad to not be justified, for me anyway.  If Hicks lives or gets a better death and the movie is at least decent, it will automatically be preferable to Alien 3, imo. That film messed with established continuity too, and wasn't good enough to justify doing so.  I'd take Gibson's script over what we have now.

My concern is that the film won't affect established continuity.

Quote from: Xenomorphine on Apr 26, 2015, 01:00:56 PMBlomkamp's already said that, so far as he's concerned, the third movie never happened.

I don't recall him ever saying that.

Personally, my biggest concern is that - if the new film is going to mess with the established continuity - it won't be a good enough movie to justify doing so.

Ripley in slave leia costume would be wonderful speculation. At least that is what I took form that alienesque space suit gear that bloomkamp floated in the beginning. I bet once you take that off it is xeno-bikini gear underneath. Neat!

This was speculated on a long while ago. Blomkamp's already said that, so far as he's concerned, the third movie never happened. This won't be dove-tailing into anything to do with it.

Both him and Weaver have also said that this story could potentially lead into another one or two direct sequels - both including Ripley. That wouldn't happen if this is meant to link up to the third film.

There has been infinite discussion about de-aging and how to explain the magical teleporting egg. None of that will happen. :)
