You could say Smiley was the "hero" of AvP: Civilised Beasts (for those who remember that DH comic and its main pred character), so if they follow a similar blueprint, Badlands should be just fine.
It only gets silly if you overly humanise the preds on film, like have pred subtitles...or translate into English speech for the audience, like how Romans speak posh English in most films. If they just stick with visual (speech-less) storytelling in the pred scenes, this could actually be very entertaining at least for pred fans.
