I've been before, it's a pretty unique looking place if so.

I suppose technically it could also be North Dakotas badlands, which are greener, yet cooler than SDs.

That is, if the title doesn't have some other meaning.

Still, seeing people yeeted off of the plateaus and buttes of SD could be interesting.  The badlands just kind of are there in the middle of the plains.  You just drive down a hill and then bam, they appear.

If it's South Dakota, I expect to see plenty of bison.

And the region is certainly unique.

Be odd to film in NZ then, surely?

I'm more inclined to think, with what we've heard so far, that the movie might not be set on Earth at all and rather some Earth-like planet which could have it's own area the characters dub 'the badlands' that looks nothing like the US national park. Just a place you shouldn't go kinda thing

As long as it looks good, earth or no earth I'm in for it.

I'm for off world stuff as long as the setting, I.e. environment, terrain, weather and tone all become characters in the film.

IMO In a Predator movie that film logic is often not taken seriously enough and should be realized as an integral element of a Predator film. The setting is a character. P1 established that the moment Dutch's team was dropped into the jungle.

That mostly disappeared now. Even in Prey it wasn't that prevalent besides the use of the mud pit.

One thing I say often on this forum is that the first creature was intricately tied to it's environment. The predator was designed with the jungle setting in mind, hence him looking so good in it.

When you change the decorum for, let's say, a more modern laboratory-like one, it can exacerbate the "man in a suit" aspect, just like the lab scene in The Predator did.

I truly hope I won't get that here.

Yes, exactly. In Predator 1, even prior to JH being introduced to the audience you feel the living jungle and there in suspense. This gave the audience and characters the feeling and fear as if what ever is out there hunting was the jungle.

This was clearly intentional as well, through dialogue and camera work. With that they established and created the structure for imo what makes a great predator film. Other considerations to be made when speaking on what made P1 a classic but setting as a character is one.

The jungle was a character, the team no matter how tough or skilled, inferior and predator, the superior.

Yeah I posted this before the release of the information about filming in New Zealand and the characters bios.  I don't think it is gonna be in SD/ND/or Montana, all with prevalent badlands.

A lot of people are apparently rooting for it to be set off earth, which I am not against.

Kimarhi

Me either.  I just wonder if the Predator futureverse is the same as the Aliens future verse.

Nightmare Asylum

That's the thing I'm wondering about, too. Inclined to think yes (especially if they do go stealth AVP with this thing ;)), given Dan's clear affection for the Alien series as well (is he ever without that WY hat?) but I'd also be very fond of seeing something pulpier for the Predator franchise's vision of the future.

Badlands makes me think of an Old West setting... That's what I would like to see. Cowboys vs Predators. lol
