Title: Harry Gregson-Williams Will Compose Alien: Covenant Score
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Feb 16, 2016, 07:10:17 PM
Harry Gregson-Williams will compose Alien: Covenant score. Speaking to All Access about his career, Harry Gregson-Williams has revealed that Ridley Scott has asked him to score Alien: Covenant.
He stated his excitment for the project but also clarified it wouldn’t be until much later on in the year. Gregson-Williams and Ridley Scott have worked together previously on several different films, most recently on Scott’s acclaimed The Martian. Gregson-Williams has also worked alongside Ridley’s brother, Tony Scott, on various projects.

Prometheus was composed by Marc Streitenfeld but Gregson-Williams was actually brought aboard to compose two additional tracks for the Prometheus score: Life and We Were Right. Thanks to Scified for the news.
Really excited for this though, I really enjoyed his work on Prometheus. However, like tmjhur said, I'm hoping for a darker tone.

I'm pleased with this news. The Martian soundtrack is fantastic imo check out 'stomach op' from that OST, sounds like something we could perhaps hear on the Covenant soundtrack

Life is a magnificent theme, very Influenced Goldsmith / sci-fi 70's. It's intimate, epic, powerful, mysterious and surprising.
Overall the soundtrack of Prometheus is excellent: Alien> Prometheus> Alien 3> Aliens
But i'm ok with a darker tone for this new movie.

Hopefully there's a lot of actual music in this film. Apart from 'A Planet' and 'Life', the Prometheus soundtrack was largely a collection of atonal blips and bloops... I suppose it worked in the film, but it makes for a pretty dull album.

I was searching around youtube for this guys music but are there any "prime" examples of his work that I should be listening too? I mean the stuff from prometheus and MGS2 was kinda ok but... meh, not really feeling it. First it is that Danny McBride guy and now this guy? I've avoided the McBride thread because he looks like a joke and I don't want a joker in mah aliens.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-2DOLrWDYKw This is the track I mentioned earlier, 'Stomach Op' from the Martian OST. I can absolutely imagine something like this in Alien: Covenant

This is great to hear he may be back to compose Alien Covenant, though I must say I'd be curious to hear a composer like Christopher Young, Marco Beltrami, Danny Elfman or Michael Giacchino provide their style of music to an Alien movie, evoke the atmospheric eeriness that Jerry Goldsmith (RIP) & James Horner (RIP) provided to the first two Alien films.

Some people might be as familiar with that one as the theatrical cut was a lot, shorter. I love the Overture, which was literally just a black screen and an extended portion of William's music. It's pretty awesome, but not something you'd recognize unless having seen the director's cut (which is a million times better than the theatrical cut).
