This is me listening to Dimmu Borgir's Stormblast:

Interesting, blastbeats with clean guitar. That's new

More of the same thing (Its hard to enjoy new stuff first time through)

Interesting Gothic piano-only  intro on the track Sorgens Kammer.

Okay, the piano intro has gone on for some time now. Get on with the metal.

Its obviously not an intro. Its now 5 minutes into a 6 minute song. HOLY SHIT WHO CARES ABOUT PIANO I THOUGHT THIS WAS METAL AAAHHHHHHGH!

There is a black metal topic? W00T?  :D

As an expert in the field, I must post right away and clear things up for you noobs!

The imagery behind BM is fading away in recent times, nobody takes it seriously anymore.
And nobody's burning churches like they did in 90's Norway.

Some bands still paint their faces and spray blood on the audience at gigs, but you can't really blame them. Heavy metal was always theatrical and over-the-top, black metal just took it to the extreme. Not to mention it's fun to watch those clowns at concerts.

The genre itself is very experimental. Crossovers with ambient, folk, symphonic, avantgarde, industrial, electronic and gothic music emerged. Pagan and viking metal have their roots in black metal. Crossovers with death metal, thrash metal, crust punk and grindcore are common, too.

I listen to a lot of BM bands and I'm not ashamed to admit it, I listen to stuff I consider good and ignore the rest.

You just have to be born with a fondness for the distorted guitar, screechy vocals and uberdark posery.  :D
Extreme music for extreme people.

Here's a few I consider good, it's rather varied -

Industrial/Grindcore/BM:

Okay, I imagine death metal is popular in the US, but black metal? It's much more common in Europe and even here it's almost completely underground.

I think you are confusing BM with genres like deathcore, metalcore and death metal itself. That shit is fairly popular, black metal ain't.

I can understand that, especially if you're uninterested and/or unfamiliar with the genres.

Rest assured, you're friends do not listen to BM. The occasional Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth in their playlists still don't mean their black metal fans, those two bands - while having black metal roots - chose to widen their fanbases and are enjoyed by many young metalheads and goth kids alike.

Here's a comparison between three typical black metal, death metal and deathcore songs, maybe it'll help:

QuoteEveryone I know loves Death Metal and Black Metal.

True! I live in europe and the scene here is wild and bigger than ever, Deathmetal, Blackmetal, Hardcore, Metalcore, Symphonic Metal, Power Metal... this stuff is booming over here (always speaking in relative terms)

unknown Bands like Eluveitie have entered the charts in my country at #4 and even in the states they entered the charts.

As for BM: If you look at it as a form of art, it is not bad. But all the good bands that have played Black Metal in the past have now changed their sound to something better:

Behemoth (you surely know them) are now Death Metal and sound way better than during their BM - days

Cradle of Filth were so blasé during their BM - times and at least stand out of the mass now with their comercialised Gothic Metal.

Dimmu have changed from BM to somekind of Symphonic Death with Black Metal elements (In Sorte Diaboli is the biggest proof of that and also their best album)

Keep Of Kalessin used to be Black Metal and never had a big Audience. Then Kolossus stepped away from the Black Metal clichés and BAM: You have a successful band!

The only reason why Gaygoroth could stay true to their BM roots and have somekind of success was because of their controversy, but not because of their music...

So you see, the good BM Bands have realised that this music is stagnation and full of limitation, which literaly means no growth. So quite rightely they have changed to a better form of music.

I personally prefer Melodic Death Metal and even Metalcore. Simply better melodies and hooklines with much much much greater Guitarworks... and I LOVE Guitar Harmonies the oldschool way like Iron Maiden did it and modern Bands in Metalcore and Melodeath are reviving that kind of Guitar Harmonies!

QuoteGaygoroth

Gorgoroth is seriously overrated, but you can't call them Gaygoroth anymore, Gaahl left the band you know.  :D

QuoteCradle of Filth were so blasé during their BM - times and at least stand out of the mass now with their comercialised Gothic Metal.

They were super awesome back in the 90's, I do however consider their new stuff utter crap. Dani's voice sucks big time now and the commercialization didn't raise the quality either. Lowered it, in fact.

But I have to admit - when it comes to great gothic/black atmosphere and insanely intense extreme vocal work, this one song is the true masterpiece and my personal favorite. There's even a fake female orgasm in this song and it actually fits (starts at 8:24). Ah, the good old times.

QuoteGorgoroth is seriously overrated, but you can't call them Gaygoroth anymore, Gaahl left the band you know.

Haha, ok sorry! My Bad  ;)!

Gaa(y)hl has got a new Band though: Waldruna... prefer him in that one... not metal... but Norwegian Folk/ Pagan.

I'm not saying that Cradle are musically better now, I'm simply saying that there's more diversity in their music now and they don't have to obey the strict and sensless rules of "Black-Metal - Trueness" anymore.

That is actually a good song, never heard that one before :) I'll have to go through some of my older collections... I stopped listening to Cradle a long while ago.

Quotethey don't have to obey the strict and sensless rules of "Black-Metal - Trueness" anymore.

They never did. And that's the thing - they were already progressive and different than other BM bands right from the start, playing an interesting blend of black, gothic and symphonic metal, even introduced female vocals which no other BM band did at the time.
Their image was also different - focusing on dark, gothic, yet romantic atmosphere with lyrics inspired by world literature, poetry, mythology and horror movies. Lovecraft was among the most notable influences.
Again, at that time, most BM bands were still hailing Satan and burning churches in their lyrics.

The focus on gothic romance and classic tales stayed, but unfortunately, as the band gained popularity, it's sound deteriorated into a teen-oriented gothic metal parody, now just a remnant of CoF's former genius.

QuoteEluveitie: You know them?!

I know a lot of metal bands.  8)

Yeah they have become the ones who call the shots in this genre... them and Dark Funeral. (I'm not counting Dimmu or CoF in because they're not BM anymore)

I don't mind it though... I have to agree with you that their old stuff is in some aspects better, but "The Age of Nero" was still quite alright apart from the shitty recording. I would even go as far and say that they have grown in some ways maybe...

Quote"organic" metal

Well the bands that you just listed are very good. Devildriver is one of my favourites. Killswitch where good up til As Daylight Dies (although that was already very weak for their standards). Their last album just sucked. Same with All That Remains... they are a shadow of their former self. Lamb of God are quite ok, though a but to repetitive. Machine Head are great but it's almost been an eternity since their last album...

However the bands you listed are not Black Metal and personally I have never heard one good american Black Metal Band...

America for me is the land of Thrash Metal and Metalcore. Although Metalcore is an aborration from Melodic Death Metal which again comes from Europe (Dark Tranquillity, (Old) In Flames, At The Gates)

I also like Dimmu Borgir since the time of Stormblast...

Satyricon came into my collection with mother north and I've been hooked to them from that point on.

With CoF... I don't know. Somehow I love all their stuff. You just have to look at CoF from Nymphetamine on as a totally different band with a new musical style and then it's actually quite good I find  ;)

I like a few Gorgoroth songs, but mostly meh. And the imagery is just too much.
But I'm probably hypocritical, since I don't mind it at all in, say, Dark Funeral, but Gaygoroth somewhat repulses me. I feel like they take themselves too seriously..

And I actually find a lot of magic in Wolves.. , and not of the same old poseur-ish satanic type.

Mods are asleep, post black metal.
Note:if anyone on here is a super kvlt tr00 bm nerd, respect&hailz, but please spare me from your judgement as my bm taste is mega entry level and I mostly just listen to the classic albums + new stuff that gets hyped up on the blogosphere.

SUMMONING from Austria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuPYehVDiDw# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuPYehVDiDw#)
Atmospheric/depressive/folky black metal with dungeon synth influences. I have been listening to this album a lot lately, its absolutely beautiful. Also all Summoning albums are Tolkien-themed, this is the only one thats not based on LoTR though. This band is what got me into the series as of late actually aha.

INQUISITION from Colombia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F7ABpLEMno# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F7ABpLEMno#)
Thrashy black metal in the same vein as Immortal, although I like these guys a lot more than Immortal. This album is one, if not the fav, of my all fav bm releases, just because the riffs are all so f**kin sweet and the production job is impeccable. The vocals can take some getting used to for those not versed in black metal, they sound kind of like a dying frog croak haha. The lyrics are usually scifi related via talking about the dark coldness of space, which I find pretty cool, and they have ridiculously long song titles like other bands I like such as NILE and GIGAN. (Actually now that I think about it, those 3 bands would make a pretty killer tour but I doubt inq would ever do it as they are super selective about who they tour with). I can imagine the Necrons from WH40k listening to this band while they are chilling in the tombs getting psyched up for battle before teleporting to an inhabited planet to kill everything that lives there (as well as DARKSPACE, another awesome band that someone posted in this thread before me).

DISSECTION from Sweden
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjmKBZ-wL8A#ws (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjmKBZ-wL8A#ws)
Beautifully melodic black metal, This album is mandatory listening for anyone trying to get into bm, esp if you already like melodic death metal bands, great gateway band. Pretty much everything about this album is perfect, the riffage, lead guitar, production, atmosphere, lyrics, everything. Feel like this album is esp good to listen to in the post-xmas season during jan&feb when the winter blues sets in and you don't feel like doing anything and you just want to wallow in self hatred and the BITTER FROZEN COLDNESS OF YOUR HEART&SOUL.

REVENGE from Canada
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R5oO8pcGro# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R5oO8pcGro#)
Okay time to bring out the big guns. Who would have thought that the most extreme band of all time would be from Canada lol??? Revenge play a destructive hybrid of black metal, death metal, and grindcore, not unlike bands that have been posted in this thread already (Anaal Nathrakh), but with a way rougher dirtier production job. They're playing soon near me with the current incarnation of Mayhem and Watain, can't decide if I want to go or not... anyway listen to these guys if you literally want your ears raped, and not in a nice way.

I have all of Summoning's albums on LP (including the ultra limited editions with Silenius/Protector's autographed cards) and first edition CDs + represses. Also I have all their album cover official shirts in tee/longsleeve/hoodies; don't really wear them anymore tho. Without a doubt the only metal band that matters to me.

I also have MANY extremely rare cassettes, LPs, first editions, shirts, boxsets, etc. of older bands but really don't care about them anymore. Just for fun, I will mention a few of my rarities:

1. Nargaroth - Semper Fidelis box set (#70/99) : I had to write a letter to Kanwulf (Ash) to even be considered to get one. I did get one and it is considered one of rarest of all BM items in existence; he picked out personal items to include in each one, so none are the same. Most recent sale of one box (7 years ago!) was almost 1000$.

2. Emperor - Wrath Of The Tyrants cassette/CD on Wild Rags

3. Silencer - Death, Pierce Me PIC LP in Sleeve by Autopsy Kitchen (less than 25 in existence)

4. Myrkwid('s) first four demo tapes - less than 50 hand numbered of each in existence and took FOREVER to find them.

5. Gorgoroth - A sorcery written in blood demo tape (1993) : direct from Warloghe member, who obtained it directly from the band in 93, when the band mattered and Hat was still on vocals.

6. Abyssic Hate - Betrayed demo tape : direct from Warloghe member, who got it directly from Shane Rout.

7. Abyssic Hate - Suicidial Emotions PIC LP (4 copies, all of which are written/produced in the single digits or teens out of 500, the lowest being #003).

8. Burzum - Support your local Einsatz Kommando tee and longsleeve: While in prison, Varg Vikernes had these printed in limited numbers and are banned in MANY EU countries.

I plan on selling almost everything eventually, bc I really don't listen to BM anymore. I would rather see them go to caring homes than collect dust in mine. I guess my ever evolving tastes in music changed into more electric, happy music. :D

Yeah, Summoning is f**king awesome. I might try and pick up a Stronghold reissue LP in the near future because its a really great album to listen through all the way in one session. I only started listening to them a month about a ago lol, advansed black metal fans always have the craziest collections out of the whole bunch I find.

^ I think there a few still available at Napalms webshop if still interested.

After reading all the posts, I felt True Black Metal needed to make it back here.

Possibly the most underrated Black Metal project from Germany:

Today's most true band (from Greece), with a special guest...

One of the classics:

Once Mortiis left, so did their sound and lyrics. The final true Emperor release...

Wait you dont like/LOVE 'In the Nightside Eclipse'??  :o

Anyway, i always found Agalloch to be a good "gateway" band into the genre, especially this album:

These guys are pretty great too (think i prefer the more atmospheric side of BM anyway):

I know this question wasn't directed at me but I'm joining in anyway....

For me personally, Wrath of the Tyrant is perhaps the better album.

That said, In the Nightside Eclipse still remains quite the incredible achievement of young musicians and should always be considered a landmark of the genre. It reflects the geographical isolation appropriately and when listened to as whole work the cohesiveness unveils pure musical poetry.
Whilst actively absent Mortiis' lyrics are at least still on offer and considerably his most potent spells at the time conceived, though bass guitar is all but inaudible (exception would be a passage found within The Majesty of the Night Sky).
I believe the mastering is what elevates the albums power and I have never heard a Synth sound that f**king great on a black metal release (sure other bands have better playing or more varied tones whatever, i'm taking the sound) but Judas Iscariot - heaven in flames (1998) certainly comes freakishly f**king close.

Ultimately, Wrath of the Tyrant does (for me) obtain the Raw Essence of Black Metal. The sloppy yet passionate performances of the unique compositions on offer encapsulates it's Era purposefully. A group of youths channelling the past darkness of early Bathory, Hellhammer etc, embedded alongside the 'I don't give a f**k about you' attitude of Punk Rock.
A few albums like this come to mind, obviously A Blaze in the Northern Sky, also Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism. Each of these now reminiscent of the scenes original ideology but a far cry and departure from the paths these bands eventually undertook respectively.

'He is the wind, He is the storm
He is the woods, He is the roots...'

Not black metal but check out The Faceless. They make futuristic death metal. Great band. Another band I'd recommend is Gigan and their record Quasi-Hallucinogenic Sonic Landscapes.

Yeah, not too shabby..

Not particularly a fan of Venom, though the influence remains quite clear.

Killer guitar solo! A decent romp overall.

I'd take a shot at this being between 82-84 in which case Hellhammer certainly has the 'edge', yet it's always good to hear worthy shit that has been Buried by Time and Dust.

Thanks!

Well, I gave The Faceless - Planetary Duality (album) a listen. Cheers for the recommendation, I'm not into a lot of Modern Bands at all though I didn't mind this stuff.

Should you find the time and are not already familiar with, some bands from my neck of the woods to check out:

StarGazer- A Merging to the Boundless
Vassafor- The Obsidian Codex
Temple Nightside - Condemnation.

Those last two are deep and dark as the yawning abyss.
Stargazer contains the more esoteric, irregular passages, to be found among their many varied influences.

For unknown reasons I only have and listen to this black metal album.
Was a little into the genre when I was younger but this is the only one that stuck with me.

Artwork is by Kristian Wåhlin who did (and is still doing) many other album covers for metal bands. I love his style.

Yep, that's a classic album alright. So many ripping tracks. Always preferred this one to Storm of the lights bane, although nights blood & unhallowed are pretty fkn killer tunes.

Nightside Eclipse cover art is amaze-balls! Got the LP and detail is incredible when compared to my old CD copy.

Anyone know the band Esoctrilihum ? They are quite good imo.

I liked the last Pissgrave album.

Blackened Thrash is another favourite metal subgenre of mine. Older Skeletonwitch albums, Sabbat (not Black Sabbath, although I do enjoy Black Sabbath), Toxic Holocaust, Absu, Aura Noir, etc.

One of my favorite recent albums

Might be a little too soft around the edges for some black metal purists.

But I think this album really illustrates how beautiful black metal can be.

Departure Chandelier - Life Escaping Through the Candle's Smoke

Some nice raw black metal with surprisingly good and catchy synths
