Title: Original DOOM Series Discussion Thread

Seeing as the Doom 4 thread has become increasingly Doom general in terms of discussion, I figured we needed a proper thread for the Doom series.

So I just bought the DOOM Classic Collection off of Steam I have to say I've really been enjoying it.

So DOOM

Play the original Doom's (doom1+2) on ultra violence or nightmare difficulty. It is soo much more fun then any of the other difficulty's. Me and a friend use to play these games with only starting with the pistol on the harder settings. You will never feel so much satisfaction when you complete any of the level s on ultra violence or nightmare. Ultraviolence being my favourite of the two.

Generally I hate FPS games but Doom I make an exception for because it's so damn fun. I remember playing it way back during it's shareware days on Win95 & I still play the game to this day on PC though I'm more into playing mods now than just the original. The best one I've played so far is the original Doom with a Doom 3 skin thrown over top. It's awesome as hell & Brutal Doom is a super fun mod as well. My favorite of the 3 is the 1st Doom because that's what started it all & the one I still have the most fun playing through.

I usually play through the originals every so often. It's hard for me to pick a favourite because I like a whole bunch of levels from each episode, but it's all-in-all just a timeless game. I especially love playing it with the PSX sounds and music wad.

Brutal Doom is of course amazing, too.

I agree it is hard to pick a favorite. I love all 3 for different reasons, different levels, etc.. I've yet to play the new Doom as I do not have any of the new consoles to be able to play it or a computer that's good enough to run it. Brutal Doom was so much fun to play. I did a playthrough of the entire first episode of Doom 1 a long while back on my youtube channel. Fun times.

While most of my playtime (and dedication) goes to the originals I must say that Doom 3 feels like home. It's the iteration of the universe which captivates me the most - not just the story but also the general aspect of everything.

I highly recommend grabbing the mod for Doom 3 that puts the Doom 3 skin & look overtop the original Doom. It's soo damn awesome to see the original Doom levels with Doom 3 graphics. All the enemies are given the Doom3 look too. It's awesome. I can't remember what it's called off hand but it's pretty easy to find. I should also mention, the mod to my knowledge only works with the original release of Doom3, not the BFG Edition. I hate that version of the game.

Oh yeah, I remember that. Not exactly sure of its name but I know I saw it somewhere on /r/Doom.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/4y0t56/doom_4_in_doom_3_in_doom_2_insanitys_brutality_v40/

This is my closest find so far, although it keeps the original enemies and uses DOOM's weapons the enviroment is straight off Doom 3.

For a second I was expecting that mod of Doom 3 remade within the idTech engine but whatever. Looks nicer than expected. I think I saw it once on YouTube.

When it comes to weapons I have to admit the originals will always feel the best. Doom 3's felt off (probably because of their sounds, especially early-game ones).

Totally agree with you there. As much as I like Doom 3, the sound of the guns always bothered me a bit too especially my favorite trusty shotgun. Even some of the creature sounds bother me too. The imps are my main complaint in that department. Death sound of them in the original games will always be the best for me. The Cacodemons too are another I much prefer their look & sound in the originals over Doom 3.

Wooo! I completed the original DOOM a few days ago I have to say it was a ton of fun and it actually looked pretty good with the ZDoom Mod. not the one that allows you to aim just the Graphic Texture Mod that just upgrades everything to HD and stuff.

Awesome man! Yea I agree the ZDoom Mod is pretty damn awesome. Can't remember how long ago I grabbed that but seems like a lifetime ago. Love how the health items look with the blue hue going around them. I think the armor items are similar with a green hue if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I last played that one. Got stuck on Brutal Doom for quite a while after I came across that one haha

Tried using Trent Reznor's sounds from the D3 alpha? The Pistol, Machinegun, Shotgun and Imp sound a lot better.

I've had a ground-up rebuild of my mod (which adds a few extra sounds from the alpha, among other tweaks) sitting on the shelf 99% finished for months, I really should get it done.

Indeed, I had originally intended to play via DOS-Box but when I saw how good it look I downloaded it on the spot.

Though I didn't entirely complete DOOM I did leave Episode 4 out it was just too many teleporting Demons everywhere.

I decided to start DOOM 3 before I go to DOOM 2 and the weapon sounds and feeling of the various weapons not named Chainsaw do disappoint me though, especially after playing the original DOOM right before it.

Cool! do you have any sound samples?
Title: Re: Original DOOM Series Discussion Thread
Post by: Vertigo on Sep 28, 2016, 10:26:40 AM
You can get some idea of the sounds by watching the alpha footage:

It was a playable demo and the whole thing got leaked, so every asset in there can be ported into the main game. Some modders have gone further than others - there's a reskin of the Shotgun out there using the alpha version, and personally I've mix-and-matched the sounds (don't like the alpha's footsteps for example), and remixed others (Hellknight).

Eh. Shotgun sound is ok in that alpha vid but still sounds a little weak to me. I still personal think you can't top the original sound.

Yes Blade Yautja was the name of that, thank you! It's a so-so mod but I've only played it maybe twice since I got it and wasn't for long each time. There's also the Aliens mod for the original Doom that runs through ZDoom. Not too bad but still glitchy here and there. There's also a really cool Metroid Doom mod out there too.

Me haha I haven't played Doom 64 in many years but I remember not liking it that much. I think it was mainly for being on a console. I really don't like the feel of playing Doom with a controller. I'm a strict Keyboard/Mouse guy for Doom. I did however find Doom64 at a fair last year and picked it up, just haven't hooked up my 64 yet to play it.

I loved Doom 64. It's not considered much amongst fans for some reason (may be to do with it only coming out on console), but I thought it was pretty tight all round. At the time, it was also a lot darker and had more of a scary atmosphere compared with the others, which I really dug.

Also, don't forget the Master Levels. Can't remember if they were included in Final Doom or not, but there are some legendary maps in that.

Doom 64 is available through a source port now so I think that once people realized back then that it was only on console they gave up and didn't bother looking again.

I also have to agree with that; from what I've seen it looks like the perfect Doom game which balances both horror and action.

Come to think of it, it was probably more the case that it was developed by Midway and not id, so not many took it as canon. Kind of a shame though, because it was a worthy game IMO.

Today I had time during one of my computer science classes to install Brutal Doom on a couple units. It's been long since I last played and as a consequence I still remained to bloody version 19.

I notice there are now two modes of playing: Classic and Modern. At a first glance the Classic one seems to remove all taunts, executions while keeping the fancy animations and original weapon models.

For those that have had time to play it, which of these do you like the most?

Check out "Classic Doom 3". It's just the original Doom game with the Doom 3 skin thrown over everything. I don't know if mods work on the BFG edition as I only have the original Doom 3 release on my PC. That's really the only mod I've played with on 3 though. I have the Yautja mod but only tried it maybe twice so far.

haha that's awesome. Perfect for Doom. Never tried multiplayer on the game though aside from the Classic Doom Collection on PS3 that lets you play the game in 2 player mode which is kinda cool actually especially on levels where you need all 3 keys and you both can split off but finding keys goes to both of you but yea, never tried multiplayer on PC before.

Thread does get buried easily I agree. I just keep reshreshing the "show new replies to your posts" at the top so that way I only see stuff I've posted on whenever someone else posts in the thread just because of things getting buried so quickly here. I don't have the patience to actually look through the different pages on threads to find something.

Like I said I never understood how it worked. I DO bother checking threads manually, in fact I DO a lot of "click-clack" on this forum.  :P

Now I had no idea there was a special edition of these on PS3, seems like it was an exclusive. Rather pointless if you ask me considering there's the BFG Edition but sounds fun. I like the menu.

Too bad I didn't play Doom in multiplayer. Nowadays I don't really know how one would achieve that.

I think XBox 360 has the Classic Doom Collection available on their online store. It's a digital download release only, no physical copy to buy that I'm aware of. True there's the BFG Edition but for some reason, I don't dig playing that version of Doom 3 or the classics that come on the disc. Plays a little off to me for some reason. I only play that digital version every so often though as I'm not crazy about using a controller for Doom, it seems to slow to me if that makes sense. Mouse/keyboard setup is so much faster & precise for me.

As for multiplayer these days, I think the classics on the BFG Edition might have a Death Match option that goes online & the digital Classic does too I believe. No idea how to get multiplayer PC. Never got into doing online multiplayer at all for any game or system. Don't see the appeal in death match's or capture the flag type games. Co-op story mode games I'd be down for but that's a rare one to find these days.

The game itself had no stability issues as far as I experienced, no sudden lockups or crashes to desktop.
