Title: Alien: Blackout Details Announced
Post by: Nightmare Asylum on Jan 07, 2019, 02:09:41 PM
Welp, Blakout's a mobile game. So much for that.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/variety.com/2019/gaming/news/alien-blackout-is-a-survival-horror-mobile-game-starring-amanda-ripley-1203101143/amp/ (https://www.google.com/amp/s/variety.com/2019/gaming/news/alien-blackout-is-a-survival-horror-mobile-game-starring-amanda-ripley-1203101143/amp/)

I guess there's a bit of comfort in knowing that this isn't Cold Iron's game at least, so there's still a game being worked on out there at least.

If it's free on Google Play, I'm excited, because that's all I have access to right now.

Well, yikes ain't that a disappointment. I like the idea, but it seems to be a Five nights at Freddies clone, just repackaged as an alien game. Dammit, I can guarantee you have to pay for the game too. They took down AVP Evolution and Predators and release this? Ew.

Well that's a bit of a disappointment.

I'm willing to give it a shot, but... the pitch doesn't sound promising...

Mobile games are dead, at least to gamers.  Can't believe they are wasting time energy with this.

I suggested this premise years ago as a DLC for Alien: Isolation - just with multiplayer instead of the team being AI driven. Interested to see how it plays, certainly seems to be re-using a lot of assets from Isolation.

EDIT: This doesn't mean I'm ok with the sequel to Isolation being a mobile game, however. It's a neat idea but why does it need to be played as Amanda Ripley? There seems to be very little story so I don't get why you would waste a character from a game that fans are asking for a sequel of, especially knowing what backlash any marketing campaign would get for that. I'll play it out of love for the franchise, but am still looking towards the Cold Iron game as the next "true" entry into the Alien game series.

Damn it, not playing on mobile. When it comes to expenditure/profit possibly a good decision. Guess i got to lower my expectations for future game announcements, mobile platform seems to be an increasing threat :D

Makes total sense! Because when you want a captivating and immersive experience, why not go with a tiny screen with tiny speakers?

Is it too late to get that option with Kane's actual son that someone mentioned in the previous thread? I was genuinely excited for a follow-up to Alien Isolation...never would have thought it would be a mobile game. Very disappointing.

Well damn. So unless you sell your ovaries or nuts for a good "Gaming" phone... You're gonna be either A: Stuck with a phone emulator on the PC which will be clunky as hell to play, or B: One of many who will be stuck waiting for a proper frackin Alien/Aliens game >.<.

Why do good things have to be butchered.?...

I don't know if I can imagine a more terrifying experience than creeping down a dark corridor with alarm klaxons blaring and the sound of nearby otherworldly movement, and then get a phone notification about an old acquaintance's birthday on Facebook or an Amazon Prime sale! Mindbreaking horror I tell you!

Ok so a few more details from the app store pages - it's releasing January 24th and costs $4.99. Internal codename for the project is "Mendel". Social media accounts were created back in September and all the promo art seems to have been created in November.

No, I pretty much anticipated this kind of reaction when I first learnt of this. And I'd been dreading it.

I'm going to wait to actually play the game myself before I jump to any conclusions. I really enjoyed AvP Evolution so I don't think anything about the platform means it automatically going to be bad. I'll actually give it a go.

I might get it if it's priced reasonably, but honestly this will be a huge letdown to the fans.

I think I depends on what you are trying to pull off with the mobile game.

If it's survival horror, you start at a disadvantage compared to other platforms IMO.

I'm so completely underwhelmed. It could turn out to be good like AVP, but very few mobile titles turn out good IMO. I'll reserve final judgement until release, but history says I had better keep my hopes under control.

This was a bad PR move, if the "Watch" thing is really good they should've revealed that first.
Them murmured about Alien Blackout afterwards in the background.

As is stands to the general public, they'll see it like this;

ACM- Disgusting...
Alien Isolation- Whoo!
Alien Covenant- ...
The Predator- Garbage.
Alien Blackout- "Seriously? This is the sequel to Isolation?"
(Diablo Immortal?)

Literally the first thought I had, this is perfect.

Really though, this frustration could've been easily avoided by showing Cold Iron's game first. A bit of market research and the swift and fierce backlash to Diablo Immortal should've been the first thing they looked at. Everybody wants the sequel to Isolation, we knew that wasn't happening, but you deliver what was taken as a tease of that, and then announce a mobile 'sequel,' people will be pissed.

As a person who's had nothing whatsoever to do with mobile games, I have to say that this game looks far more impressive, visually, than I imagined mobile games would be capable of. But that's more a testament to my ignorance than to the game itself.  :P

To play Devil's Advocate...

The game actually costs $5, which is a good sign, typically it's the free ones that end up with the $99.99 coin pack advertisements in your face.

AVP Evolution remains one of my favorite mobile games, so it's been done right before. Mobile platforms are actually pretty powerful these days, gaming has its place there as long as companies can produce something with substance rather than a scam disguised as a game.

I'm intrigued and I'll go in with an open mind. But yeah, this backlash was easily spotted from a mile away, gaming press and YouTubers are going to pounce on it and spread negative sentiment.

Yeah it literally seems like a rip of Alien: Isolation's survival mode, but you're controlling four AI-driven characters instead of yourself. Even seems to heavily re-use assets from Isolation - models/sounds/animations, just with heavily reduced polygon counts on models.

This game would've had less backlash and seemed more original if the main character wasn't Amanda Ripley. Unless there are story aspects that haven't been shown, it seems like there's no need for her to be in it.

Considering it costs $4.99, I'd like to hope it doesn't have micro transactions. Don't really see how they'd fit into what they have shown off.

Yeah if you re-watch the Alien: Blackout trailer, at the end it highlights "PLAY", so "WATCH" is definitely for another project. Wasn't there talk of an online series back along? Maybe that has been resurrected secretly.

I love alien and I love mobile. People are already picking holes at a game they haven't even seen yet. Pretty sure isolation took sound effects directly from the sound effects in the original. So what if it's borrowing? This is just history repeating itself. A new thing comes out, about something they claim to love and rather than being happy about it. They chuck mud at it. I for one would love a alien isolation type game I can play on the go. I just hope it's premium and not free to play. Be grateful that we are being spoilt with classic alien games this year. It might not happen again for awhile.

Even if the game isn't terrible (huge if), it'll be forgotten, unsupported, and eventually pulled from the mobile stores.  Hard to want to spend money on that.

Mobile games suck.

Yeah it reuses a lot of Isolation's assets. That's good, that means it was cheap and financial success is a bit more plausible. It doesn't deserve this much hate at all. I'm not too happy about this being all we get to Play but I'm happy Isolation is getting another game in any shape or form. If this is successful, that's good for the franchise.
This is a mobile game, I don't take those seriously, so if this is fun in any sense, I'll be pleased.

And there better be no annoying microtransactions.

As long as there aren't any micro transactions I'll be more than happy to support it as it does seem like a way of getting more money into the franchise with relatively low overheads, which totally makes sense.

Can't help but feel the announcement could've been done a little better.

The more I think about it, I've always wanted a survival horror game that I can play while sitting on the toilet.

Guys, it's perfectly ok to be disappointed sometimes. The marketing campaign was pretty brilliant and had fans excited. I agree that you can't please everyone all the time, but I don't think anyone should be surprised that a mobile game would be a less-than-stellar reveal.

Half a roll of TP just out of reach. Plunger, hairspray, shoe. Construct items to reach other items before time runs out. Ration your supplies, make excuses to keep others out. Hydrate often to prevent loss of consciousness. Switch to harder difficulties. Power outage, lever breakage, sewer gators. 8 different environments, each with customizable weather patterns and time of day. Church Social, Outback Steakhouse, Grandma's Place. Challenge your friends in hardcore Stall matches.

After the fiasco of Diablo Immortal, PR should've expected this reaction.
Plus the animosity towards mobile exists in general-
Because it implies that because resources are going to this,
they aren't going elsewhere towards a genuine entry.
Think Silent Hill pachinko machines while the real artistic, evocative entries
are in the garbage.

FoxNext announced that Cold Iron Studios' game is a MMO.
First bit of info we've had about the game since January last year.

Oh f**k everything.

Gotta agree here, you really can't put mobile games in the same class as full priced PC/Console releases. One is meant to pass the time and usually to scam people out of their money, the other is supposed to (often failing these days) create a worthwhile experience to sink many hours into.

The negative reputation of mobile games has been well earned, but again, the fact that this isn't free to play is actually a good sign.

While this backlash is disheartening, it's 100% unsurprising and should've been easily spotted and mitigated by Fox.

While yes ripley is an awesome character, the name gets shoe horned in so much just to sell stuff. Like out of shadows, river of pain and sea of rust? All the ripley connectns could have been removed. But Fox can go " oooo looky here, buy this book to see the untold ripley storybor ripley, ellen ripley is in the book, find out what happened to ellen ripley, buy (ripley) this(ripley) brand (ripley)new(ripley) untold (ripley) story!

Its getting really sickening and annoying to see a cool character bastardizied to sell more units.

Why is everything happening to this poor family.

And being critically acclaimed doesn't pay the bills unfortunately. Otherwise I would have a Dredd sequel by now. :-\

Sega's expectations = unrealistic.
As beautiful as Isolation is, they could've made their money back
with far more profit if they made a middleware title.

But that's the problem nowadays, the middleware industry is dead
you're either as indie as it gets or a triple AAA blockbuster.

Alien Isolation was a great game. It makes very little sense to follow it up with a non-PC, non-console entry when the players on those platforms is who the game appealed to and was well-received by. It makes plenty of sense for those players, myself included, to be pissed about this.

I would care much less if this was its own thing, but being billed as a sequel to Alien Isolation feels like a slap in the face.

Vitriol isn't always unwarranted, people don't want this- and they're letting everyone know.
And I wouldn't call the majority of it vitriol. Just expressions of disappointment.

"Not too late to get Creative Assembly on the phone guys...#AlienIsolation2" -Twitter

"Why #AlienIsolation was such a great game and deserved a follow up game on consoles. #PS4 #XboxOne #NintendoSwitch" -Twitter

"But...that's...not what we wanted." -Twitter

"We thought it would be a sequel to Isolation...we thought it would be something worth playing..."-Twitter

"Wow! You gaming companies never learn do you?
Did you already forget the extreme backlash that EA and Blizzard got when they announced C&C and Diablo mobile games?
You are doing exactly what they did at Blizzcon! Teasing a new game and announcing that it will be Mobile only." -Twitter

"Not what I expected. Hoped for a AAA experience like Isolation and I'm hugely disappointed now... :(" -Twitter

"I have loved the Alien movies and books for years. The first video game with #AmandaRipley brought me right back into the whole story.
We waited and we get a Mobile game. People don't invest that much time into mobile games. I still love Alien but I'm sorry, not a mobile game."
-Twitter

"Lame! I was hoping for a real successor to Alien: Isolation, not a mobile game." -Twitter

"Thank god another studio is working on an ACTUAL Alien game." -Twitter

The response seems pretty reasonable to me,
bearing in mind how most fandoms react to disappointing news.

Ahh a mobile game. I called it unfortunately.

I'll give this a go, it looks decent enough for an Alien Isolation skinned Five Nights at Freddie's. It is very fair that people hoping for a console game to be announced are disappointed by this. Though Fox has clarified that Alien: Blackout is not an official sequel to Isolation but instead just happens to share the main character, Amanda Ripley, so maybe there's still a chance for a console game Alien Isolation sequel.

This makes me wonder if this mobile game will be canon and if it will fit into the comic/book and the 'watch' aspect of these announcements.

The official trailer on YouTube is currently running 282 likes to 7.9k dislikes. That's higher than 96% disapproval. To say that's entirely due to fan toxicity is disingenuous. It's the mainstream sentiment across almost all reporting from gaming news outlets, from both the journalists and users. Naturally people want a proper sequel to Isolation given its cult status and rightfully or not, the recent hinting set everyone up for disappointment.

Though i don't play mobile games, I'm fine with it - why should they only work on prequels on PC/consoles? In the end it's about the money in most cases. There are huge companies behind all that content, if they think they make more money with mobile they'll focus on mobile. We will see, how much impact a bad reception has,"shitstorms" are a common thing these days.

rightfully or not

Not saying the outrage is justified, just that it's entirely understandable and they should've seen it coming after the reception to mobile titles like Diablo Immortal and Command & Conquer: Rivals. This likely would've gone over better had it been totally its own thing rather than so visually and audibly similar to Isolation, or if they had unveiled whatever Cold Iron is working on first. This could end up being good, but it's clearly not what people wanted.

Even though this is a small scale game, having a PC/Console release of it would've helped, as we've seen with smaller titles like Aliens Vs. Pinball and the Five Nights at Freddy's games that are on both main platforms and mobile.

Also, occasionally outrage such as this actually leads to positive change. Just look at the Battlefront II fiasco.

Indeed. I think a full blown sequel to Isolation wasn't likely. As much as we and most of the critics enjoyed Isolation, it disappointingly wasn't considered to have done well enough by Sega and the people who made the bills.

And now Fox Next is starting to put games out. They're a new company. They've already got one AAA on the go. Are they going to risk putting out another big game without a success under their belt? There's some real-world practicality to consider here.

And regarding Diablo - yeah, I think Fox knew exactly what was coming to them after this. I also don't think they were just going to stop working on a game that they'd been working on prior to that fiasco.

No matter how good the game is,
it was designed a particular way for a particular platform.

That's not going to change, obviously, but- the feedback
will make them think twice about developing for mobile again.
The audience is apparently uninterested in this platform.
(With an outpouring of yearning for #AlienIsolation2.)

I hope it is good though, because I also enjoyed AVP
Evolution. But if it's really just a FNAF clone, well...
I'm not terribly interested in that.

I do agree regarding the "being its own thing" comment. If this hadn't have had Amanda as the main character, I don't think the reaction would have been so bad. It is being perceived as a lesser sequel to Alien: Isolation.

Yeah I'm also keen to play this, it looks pretty cool.

We're still getting a sequel to Isolation with Resistance & "Read.Play.WATCH" and there's still an Aliens shooter coming on console.

So there's not much to complain about in my opinion. In fact there's a lot to be excited for.

Ditto.

Then again, like I said yesterday, the excitement I had, as a new fan whose only "real" experience with an Alien game came from an arcade, was quickly dispatched.

What I saw on Twitter was nothing short of sad. I really hope people's disappointment has died down to where you can hear other people out. Maybe this wouldn't have happened if Isolation wasn't put on such a high pedestal.

I think the problem is they did a really good job of generating hype for stuff that people don't expect that level of hype for. When marketing goes wrong -- but not the way you'd expect.

I think that's the best point right there. The marketing was much better than the reveal.

However, I'm interested in picking up the comics, so there's that.

Isolation's on a pedestal for a reason lol.

I agree with SIL, they hyped people up-
and the uninformed saw Amanda Ripley,
then thought an Isolation sequel was a sure-fire announcement.

Blackout shouldn't have been hyped whatsoever,
in fact it should've probably been tact onto the
announcement of whatever "WATCH" is.

QuoteI hope it is good though, because I also enjoyed AVP Evolution.

Sometimes fans can be their own worst enemy.

Out of the 118,000+ views the game's trailer has so far, only 9,600 downvoted it.  The silent majority will probably try the game first before criticising it.  And I suspect a great portion of who downvoted will ultimately try it too, and dare I say, really like it if it turns out to be a good game.

The thing about it looks and is advertised as a five nights clone. The gameplay for that isnt exactly the best. What peopke really liked sbout five nights is the story.

Whike i personally like the five nights story i hate the gameplay.

Again, plenty of people who love the gameplay and limited perspective of Five Nights.

Reminds me of one of the early ALIENS games where you had to switch perspective for all of the marines as you tried to escape Hadley's Hope. Tense as shit, even with all of eight bit graphics.

A series of which Sales of the last entry were less than half of the previous.
I think Blackout may have missed the window as far as the FNAF formula's
longevity is concerned.

But the idea of eventually piecing together stories over the levels,
from clues in the environment as an Alien fan is a compelling idea.

Or its particular story ran dry. FNAF's formula wasn't strictly unique to begin with.

EDIT

Also, rewatching the trailer, this kind of feels like the original Alien adaptation remade with modern graphics and I'm not about to not be excited about that.

Very true, but you're also not obligated to be satisfied with every product released in the franchise either.

Being disappointed in a product ≠ shitting on a product.

This. If I'm actually being accused of being a toxic fan for not being happy with this announcement...get real.

My (least) favorite thing about this thread is the negative reaction to the (understandable) negative reactions. Unless you have ALIEN FAN tattooed on your forehead, the "unhinged vitriol" doesn't immediately affect you or represent you to others, so what does it matter? The people in here actively criticizing others' reactions are coming off as shills.

What is literally the worst thing that can happen to the Alien franchise because of backlash over this? They might not make another mobile game. That's it. Boo f**king hoo. The majority of comments made here, comments in other media platforms, and articles written by game journalists indicate that the majority of Alien fans engaged in online discourse didn't want this.

Not a single person in this thread has been prevented or prohibited from eventually buying and playing this game as a result of anyone's gut reaction yesterday.

There's free Android emulators that make it easy to run Android games in Windows. You'll still have to setup a Google Play account and pay for the game, but it should work fine.

I'm excited to give this a go! My main gripe with mobile games though is they often disappear (I believe it has to do with limited servers being used to source newer games). It's cool that the release coincides with issue 1 of Resistance. It seems we also have confirmation that the AAA title will be an MMO; I'm not a huge gamer so I'm unfamiliar with what an MMO entails. Hopefully it's story driven.

Gamers should have actually purchased Isolation if they wanted a sequel so badly. I know most hardcore fans spoke with their wallets but the game had mediocre sales.

Now it seems like the whole gaming community thought Isolation was the best thing since sliced bread. Well obviously being one of the best alien games ever made wasnt enough to get the sales it needed to actually convince fox & sega that it was worth investing in a sequel.

Likewise, the MMO is probably their best bet at making back their investment and a respectable profit.  That is, unless the fanbase roundly rejects the game altogether.

Absolutely! Nobody has to be excited about the announcement. But there are people desperately trying to comment - here and around the internet - that nobody wants it, that it's not worth playing, etc. just because it's not what they wanted. And those kinds of comments can take a running leap.

I wanted to give this the benefit of a doubt and support the franchise by trying it out even though I've never played mobile games. Now I see that my phone can't run the poor bugger. And I'm certainly not getting a tablet for just this, Too bad. If the game doesn't suck and there are no micro transactions, I hope it does well enough in terms of financial success. But yeah, don't try this again Fox if it doesn't work out too well... AVP Evolution seemed very fun, but this doesn't look as good.

IsolAlien was never a concept that was going to drive sales the way SEGA wanted it to. Not only is the genre p much dead and dying then, but at its heyday had either far FAR cheaper alternatives or much more well established franchises riffing on it that didn't have both bad game and bad movie baggage attached. Their expectations were on par with Square's absurd projections for their western properties that they still haven't learned how to manage for their OWN properties, much less separate already established IPs.

The good news is their material and chamfering system is going to make Star Citizen look really pretty.

But the world is not obligated to satisfy my expectations, so there's no sense shitting on this release for not pandering to my whims.

Very true, but you're also not obligated to be satisfied with every product released in the franchise either.

Being disappointed in a product ≠ shitting on a product.

I just want to make sure we realize the difference between toxic fandom (a serious issue) and genuine disappointment (a normal human reaction).

My (least) favorite thing about this thread is the negative reaction to the (understandable) negative reactions. The people in here actively criticizing others' reactions are coming off as shills.

Unrealistic.

The official D3 Go! trailer post on YouTube--at this moment in time--is sitting at 620 up-votes, 23,000 down-votes. Pretty hilarious when one of the prominent arguments in support of this game boils down to: "it's fine because it's a business decision that makes financial sense."

I had not actually watched the Diablo Immortal Q&A/reveal yet. Deliciously awkward. The folks behind Alien Blackout were smart not to put themselves up on a stage when they announced this game.

Announce the WATCH thing, then tack Alien Blackout onto the end of that announcement.
That would at least mitigate the problem.

Or announce something about the Cold Iron game if fiesable.
Even if it's just a piece of concept art and the title,
the title doesn't even need to be the real title-
The Witcher 3's title changed a year before it came out.

Pardon my French, but horseshit. People would still complain it's a mobile game and feel let down that it's not a "true" sequel. They might even feel it was more of a letdown if the "watch" part is good.

EDIT

...yes I appreciate the irony of these two paragraphs.

QuoteOr announce something about the Cold Iron game if fiesable.

@SIL

People would still complain- but you're wrong;
I know from watching hundreds of gaming conferences-
For example;
Gears of War POP Edition, hurt significantly less
because it came immediately after a GOW 5 announcement.
If they put out the WATCH announcement out at the same time,
or immediately after the PLAY announcement-
There would still be backlash, but it'd be mitigated.

Then make it part of the initiative.
They should've done.
They should've had the foresight to
after the Diablo Immortal fiasco.

But it doesn't have anything to do with Amanda Ripley, so now you're saying to shoehorn in a character for the sake of saving face on a mobile game announcement.

It's not pointless.
It would mitigate the response that Blackout has gotten is the point.
By drawing the gaming community's response to Cold Iron's game.

Regardless of whether it's part of the READ.PLAY.WATCH

The whole thing is Read.Watch.Play different stories about Amanda Ripley. The second they said "play", people were hoping for a sequel to Isolation on PC and consoles.

Throwing out the Cold Iron game, then saying "That's not actually it, that's it's just something else", then showing the mobile game, would not have gone down any better. Quite possibly it would have made everything worse, by dangling a project that looks like what they want -- a console/PC Alien game -- then swapping it out for the mobile offering.

The Gears of War analogy you offered isn't accurate at all because people still got the GoW 5 they expected. If they'd announced the "proper" Isolation II, then this on top, yeah; people would care less. But that was never on the tables.

Let this be known: There hasn't been a single entitled negative reaction to this news yet. How, you're probably asking? Because no one is being given anything. If someone receives a gift for Christmas, says, "I don't want this" and gives it back, they may be entitled. They might even be a spoiled brat. If someone says "I don't want this" in the context of being sold something they never asked for, that a community of fans never gave any indication of asking for, they are not entitled.

Telling people they should feel grateful for having the opportunity to buy something is about as shamelessly capitalist as one can get short of being an NFL team owner.

Absolute nonsense.

If you'd put out a PLAY announcement video-

"We're running a cryptic campaign about three Alien Isolation-related media -- something to read, a game to play, and something to watch. The 'Read' is a comic. Now here's Cold Iron's Alien game, a PC/console shooter ... which has nothing to do with all this Isolation stuff we're advertising. Nothing to do with Isolation at all, in fact. Meanwhile, here's the actual Isolation offering. Mobile game. Hope you like it."

If they hadn't pushed the Amanda Ripley/Isolation angle at all, again, I'd concede the point. But as it stands you're really not selling the "avoid a negative reaction by dashing people's hopes twice in fast succession" angle here.

At the risk of re-igniting stuff - Alien: Blackout is not an Isolation sequel despite using the same main character (https://www.gameinformer.com/2019/01/07/fox-says-alien-blackout-isnt-a-sequel-to-isolation-despite-sharing-a-main-character)

QuoteFox reached out to Game Informer to clarify that "[Blackout] is a standalone game that shares Amanda Ripley as a main character but is not related to or a sequel of Isolation." We've amended the original story's terminology to better reflect the nature of what the game is.

Reads like a lot of "ehh" and nothingness. Of course it's related to Isolation if it's featuring Amanda.

Personally, I have witnessed a lot of the all encompassing "the fans don't want this" commentary in various places, and all I know is they are not speaking for me. I'm personally looking forward to giving this game a whirl, even if the always lovely "you're not a real fan" criticism follows.

I've mentioned before that in my perspective, Alien is a film franchise, and any of its side dishes are not accepted as canon to me (like most of the casual movie going public). Not video games, comics, or novels. But what I do hope comes out of this product, is more goodwill towards Amanda Ripley, enough to convince studios to proceed with her story theatrically, with an adaptation of her alternate media stories.  That's my hope at least, and if this mobile game is received well and very successful financially, it can lead to that.

To most of the public that know it.

is bigger than the film industry, that's lots
of people that recognise Isolation as legitimate.
Especially because it's well-regarded both as a

I hope Amanda Ripley never appears in cinemas.

In my ranking of Alien Canon priority it goes;
Films, The Cold Forge, Alien Isolation,
WY Report, David's Drawings,
Other Novels & Comics.

I know the gaming industry is bigger than the film industry, but you're comparing industries. And we're not talking Fortnite, God of War or NBA2K19 here. Sega themselves said 'Alien Isolation' sales were "weak". And except for the people who played it, I strongly believe that most of the general public is unaware of it, or not conscious of it until reminded (yeah, I do remember seeing that game on the shelf, now that you mention it). But I digress.

I know to the serious Alien fans, "Alien Isolation" is considered canon like the novels and comics, and I wasn't saying that it's illegitimate. I'm not. All I'm saying is the general movie-going public (non fanatic) won't include video games in canon, and that's the way I look at it too.  That's why I would like to see Amanda's story on the big screen one day. :)

The thing about Isolation, which has been highlighted multiple times already, is that it was a labor of love. We've brought up the fact that it was a niche game in a 'dead' genre (someone used that term previously), meaning that while the game is a licensed piece of media created as a product, they took a very admirable risk. The plot may not be perfect, the characterization is weak, but the gameplay is outstanding. They took a gamble and hit a home run.

You're going to have a hard time convincing me that Alien Blackout is being created with even remotely the same level of zeal. They're not taking a single risk with it. Yes, every one of these films, books, games, etc. is a Fox cash grab through a certain lens, but this game feels merely like a cash grab that isn't trying to transcend anything else happening in the industry. It's falling in line with what's becoming standard, which is a boring, cynical decision. And let's not pretend like this game's profits are going to feed directly into more efforts to make Alien games. It's going to drop into the Disneyfox fund and go wherever they need it, like our tax money in the US.

Isolation deviated from the expected norm, and the fans were rewarded by supporting the experiment. Alien Blackout, if you take 30 seconds to read a couple lines of the Diablo Immortal wikipedia section on its reception, is hitting all the same notes. I mean, it's $5. Maybe I'll buy it, but definitely not until I see some reviews, and I don't have a single objective reason to feel optimistic.

I get that we all like The Cold Forge, and that it's a relevant text in many ways w/r/t both it's quality and the nature of Titan's inclusiveness for hiring a non-binary author, but it's canonical connection to the films is, at best, tenuous. There's a mention of Burke and Van Leuwan.

APATHY is DEATH.

The Cold Forge's lack of connections to the films is a strength.
It's highly, highly unlikely to be overridden.

And more Alien stories should divorce themselves
from the events and characters we already know.

Fair, but that makes its connections empty and unsatisfying. There's more of a connection to Aliens in the paratext on the back of the book than within the text itself.

Blackout is likely to feel the same way, even with Amanda Ripley returning from Isolation. I mean, all those characters died in the game, so what's left to provide any continuity? The plot will probably be unsatisfying in that way, or even nonexistent.

It's a weakness if it was their goal to create a solid connection, because they failed to achieve that goal. That's probably neither here nor there, because investigating their intent doesn't change the final product sitting in front of us. It's whatever. I think the book is good but I'm not flying off the handle about it. Maybe after a second read. *shrugs*

For Blackout it will probably be a weakness, but I doubt there's a lot of intentional depth behind it.

Slapping a franchise title on something doesn't automatically make it good. If the content is less than what came before it, nobody will invest in it.

Look at the Star Wars movies...they are in sharp decline. The merchandise doesn't sell. The books and comics have suffered as well. The games are abysmal because EA/Lucasfilm turned it into gambling with microtransactions through loot boxes for in game powerups/shortcuts to beat other players (Battlefront 2, 2017)The campaign has nothing to offer because it was one thing in advertisement and something else entirely in reality.

Actually the ratio is about 2000-1, Blizz took the video down three times previous to attempt to erase most of the down votes, and youtube let them.

A smarter thing to have done would be this is the story of Axel's attempt to help people during the initial shitstorm before he got all FIPTSD, rather than both kicking fans in the balls over broken sequels and mitigating the actual good will they'd garnered from that versus their other offerings over the subsequent time.

But insulation and only listening to those whom evangelize in your favor tends to make you a moron over time.

I am kind of split on this myself. First I'm glad there's no micro transactions in Blackout. I'm happy we got a new Alien game as well. The problem is it features Amanda Ripley. She's the protagonist of Isolation which ended on a cliffhanger.

So based on that i can see why people are upset. I can also see how it's comparable to the Blizzard fiasco.

If Blackout had a different main star then it would be great moving forward.

At this point, I could make it with just Isolation and AVP3. Isolation was the perfect Alien experience for me. AVP3 was a fun fps that handled Aliens, Predators, and the Marines. It looked better and played better than A:CM, and I got all the scary/fun moments I wanted, and then some.

An Isolation sequel would be a total dream come true. While this multiplayer aaa sounds intriguing, I pine for another pure horror survival Alien experience. Isolation felt like such an unlikely move, being set in the largely unexplored universe of the first film, 4 years on, I still feel so incredibly lucky it exists! I always played bioshock and thought, man if they did an Alien game like this...and Christ, they did! Now we're getting more marines vs aliens shoot em up stuff. Trust me I'll buy it, but I seriously hope there's a new spin on it...

I guess people must be really confused because
there's no Amanda Ripley in any of these things.

The ultimate point is announcements of new material

Title: Re: Alien: Blackout Details Announced
Post by: SiL on Jan 10, 2019, 09:39:51 AM
Memory was announced long before Read.Play.Watch. It was obviously never part of some Amanda Ripley plan, whereas the Cold Iron game was a complete mystery.

Alien hits theaters every few years lately and a 40th anniversary release was to be expected.

But hey, this may well prove my point, not yours. I strongly doubt people are going to give a damn about Memory or Alien 4K when the Watch reveal is made; they're going to judge the Watch reveal based on their expectations and on what it's announced to be. If it turns out to be a 30 second stop motion parody like The Predator's christmas joke, I seriously doubt the response will be "Oh well, all that hype for nothing -- at least I get to watch Alien in cinemas again."

And please stop willfully misinterpreting what I wrote about the confusion. That was specifically to the idea of announcing the Cold Iron game as part of or alongside the Read.Play.Watch initiative, neither of which has happened with these film releases.

around a character known from a Triple AAA videogame.

With READ.PLAY.WATCH being a major element-
people are then going to expect a Triple AAA videogame.

Not Alien Blackout. (Mobile Phone Game)

I don't think people are so dumb-
that announcing a few details about Cold Iron Studio's Game
before, during or afterwards would confuse anyone as far as
I'm concerned- they had an obvious way to mitigate the A.I/I
Diablo negative reaction, but they didn't elect to go that route.

I saw definite signs of skullage on the first alien corpse encountered aboard the LV-44-40 station.  However, the other aliens in Defiance appeared to be entirely skull-free even though one or two of them appeared to have the smooth carapace of the original.  Were they supposed to be young adults while the so-called "ridge tops" were their fully-matured siblings?

That wasn't intended, but I know what you saw, because I see it too. It's the unintended side-effect of the shape of the front of that head being shattered.

As for castes, I'm not really one for how those particular ones evolved. There's a definite continuity to how those ones worked, and the praetorian in #2 played into that, but I've got a very distinctly clear idea of how the biology works and it wasn't something I could put to full use in Defiance. Not to say I don't love what I drew in there, but if you gave me a series to myself, I'll give you a clear vision of how I see the biology working in regards to the caste system.

At the end of the day, changes were made to the look of the Xenos in Defiance. I started off using the ridgetops as mindless drones in need of a hive mind creature (queen, praetorian), and that brain bug was the Big Chap, but I had to change it, and with that I started to tweak things into a design I could use over and over again that was a compromise between the two. I kind of ended up taking the Big Chap's dome off and smoothed out the skull. to be more in line with the dome on the runner/big chap. It's a mix of all three.

Holy crap, can you let go of the confusion line? I can't even find the post but from memory it was addressing a marketing consideration, not that the audience is idiots.

Even so, it was the least of the points I made.

The fundamental issue here -- which I reiterated above, which you still ignored to cling to that only point -- is that people were waiting specifically for an Isolation-related "play" release, and their disappointment is in the reality of that offering. Cold Iron's game is unrelated; they would have realised this, gone back to waiting for the actual Play announcement, and still been disappointed.

And now we get to see if that bares out with the Watch announcement.

(Although, as for people getting confused, Xhan did think that the Alien 4K was the Watch announcement -- so maybe people are that easily confused on the matter? ;D)

And then never actually explained how, just asserting that it would have. Could you please explain how people expecting an Isolation sequel would be less shitty with a mobile offering if they heard about an entirely unrelated project first? You assert it's the case, but your reasoning seems to be "Because it didn't work when people didn't do that."

Also take into account that people are already starting to react poorly to Cold Iron's game for being an MMO.

C'mon SIL- the answer is obvious.

Just look on Twitter for the amount of;
"At least we still have Cold Iron's Game."

The amount of that would be much more-
if there was an announcement making the
general public more aware, and therefore
less vitriol/attention directed towards AB.

They announced news about the Cold Iron game the day of/after. It went unnoticed. I sincerely believe if they'd announced it before, it would've been quickly overshadowed by the same vitriole.

I think what it comes down to is you seem to think people on the Internet can react reasonably to news that doesn't suit them (which the YouTube videos getting posted seem exclusively designed to disprove) whereas I'm taking a much more pessimistic view (see previous).

Actually ironically enough for my particular argumentation style particularly on this forum, that's exactly how this works, what with opinions not needing facts or evidence to be had, credibility notwithstanding or sitting or out the goddamn airlock, and I daresay  based on Isolation's sales and more damning after sales, I'm not the only one.

One of legit objective hits on Isolation was how utterly derivative it was. (Yes I am aware of how much money and more importantly energy and love and blood and spit and ass they spent making it perfectly derivative except where it counted, like making the alien almost 11 feet instead of eight, which actually affected gameplay because the Alien could actually spot you in any non-overhead cover way way easier because of it after a few intelligence tree unlocks, and there was no compensation from level design which what we in the game design biz call by the highly technical phrase 'artificial difficulty bullshit', kinda like the stun in Monster Hunter World,  unless you dialed down the difficulty, and thus reduced an immersive experience to a game you could game rather easily)

This is not only more of the same, but more of the same delivered via thumb into retina, and the ironic thing is instead of biting off a franchise that already ran its course of meme saturation into a dead husk about a year ago, they could have piggybacked the sales of the Cold Iron game into a legit sequel, a sequel apparently a great many of the initial players wanted a great deal, and with assets already in place and still current gen worthy, could have possibly even got it done before the property handover to the House of Mouse, or even brokered a deal to keep the dirty filthy violent bad word saying franchise alive in the House of Mouse by relegating it to the current offerings based on the financial success of the former game and then this properly fostered sequel to a critical darling.

But nah, let's just tap stuff on a phone for literally a couple minutes and hope the RNGAlien decides to use the same air vent he used last time, and hope that despite being utterly insulated from the fanbase this will somehow translate not only into big bucks now, but enough big bucks to elicit those uncanny scary plastic stepford smiles from the new owners.

I'm glad we got a response. No microtransactions are a good thing. Now I might even pick this up. Maybe.

Of course Isolation 2 isn't happening, would be supersized if it was. It has a cult status and it's fanbase is growing slowly, but it cost a lot to make as far as I know. CA put in so much work and detail in the world that it was more expensive than one would expect. The amount of sales needed to make a great profit that's unreasonable expected of them was never in the cards.

Micro transactions weren't the problem for me. The problem for me is that companies are all moving to the mobile platform all of a suddenly, regardless if this was a plan from disney or something else, phone games aren't supposed to be anything more than a mindless distraction when there isn't anything else to pay attention to. Some people even call them toilet games, because they play them on the toilet. It's why it should never actually have a story, and why I absolutely hate modern mobile games, for trying to be something they're clearly not. It's something I feared the instant I saw games like clash of clans grab everyone's attention, and people are so suckered in that they put everything they can money wise into it, giving corporations an even bigger reason to keep doing crap like this. It sucks that I feel I'm in the minority here, but I guess that's just how it is.

It's not "moving to the mobile platform all of a suddenly".  There have been mobile Aliens games going back to Alien for the Gameboy and Aliens Unleashed for mobile phones 16 years ago.  They haven't stopped making PC and console games in that time and aren't going to now.

I never got to play Unleashed. I didn't have a phone that could do it back then! I think that was actually the first incarnaiton of Alien on a mobile mobile?

But SM is completely right. Alien (and Predator) have existed on mobile platforms for decades! This is no sudden move. And many of the mobile - I suppose we used to call them handheld - games were actually fun! I think Infestation and Evolution are genuinely great games. Hell, I used to play the shit out of Thanatos Encounter back in secondary school.

Yeah, it sucks we're not getting an Isolation 2. But I am glad I'm getting a new Alien title to carry in my pocket (as long as it's good!). I loved Evolution but it's nearly 4 years old or so. It'll be nice to have some additional variety in the Alien games I can carry around with me.

I was always gutted that AvP on the GBA never materialized. I was also gutted that Alien Trilogy never got a GBA port. Since it could run Doom and Duke Nukem, I'd hoped we'd have seen a Trilogy port. I suppose licensing issues would have put that one out too.

Eh, I was concerned about that before Isolation but the game was great enough to sell me on the idea. With these new stories though, yeah that concern is back, that her story will just become over-saturated for her to simply be a mention at the start of the second film.

Does Aliens Infestation count as a mobile game?

Mobile and handheld don't connote the same thing in the gaming community.

What's the difference?

They're both portable gaming, but a 'handheld' platform connotes a dedicated gaming console which is handheld and portable. A 'mobile' platform is derived from mobile phone, which is not primarily a dedicated gaming console.

Also something to be said about the price-point difference. Aliens: Thanatos Encounter was $30.00 in 2001 (right?). Blackout is $5.

This article makes sense to me:

Better get working on it then.

No one is going to invest in a sequel if they dont think they can make money on it. If Isolation was a financial success we would probably already have a sequel by now.

I feel like I'm in a time loop.
Isolation was a success,
Sega were unrealistic about the measure of it's success.
Especially considering that incredibly shit IGN review.
ACM's reception the previous year, Isolation's expense
(Triple AAA) and niche genre.

I wasn't that contrived.  Finding the black box was a bit contrived, but Amanda wanting to find out about her Mother's fate was a natural motive.  To say otherwise is to denounce the persistence of memory.

Alien's about blue collar working Joes,
most of which- if their mother disappeared
in the vast expanse of space would grieve
and then move on. Guess we're lucky that
Amanda Ripley's the Hollywood
perseverance archetype.

It was contrived, but it was done well-
for it to happen repeatedly makes it more
absurd each time- Amanda knowing Zula
BEFORE either of their encounters makes
the universe very small indeed.

But I'm willing to give it a chance depending
upon how they handle Isolation's ending,
perhaps they pick up the Torrens and Ripley
is forced to watch and scream helplessly
as she begs them to not open the airlock.
(A rescue USCM ship perhaps) we'll see.

Yeah, I just finished Defiance and thought the same thing.  I don't get the obsession with Ripley's family, aside from the specific character of Ellen Ripley.

Connor/Terminator
McFly and Tannen/Back to the Future
O'Connell/The Mummy
McClane/Die Hard

People can associate certain names with certain franchises. I'd rather they didn't. It makes no sense for the same characters to go up against the same dangerous situations over and over again. But, the studios will use the name to draw attention. It's a poor idea, and adds a factor of ridiculousness to the situation. But it's not about narrative, it's about money.

Yes, that's true. However, to have the same supposedly (regular guy) find himself in the same mess again and again is pushing the envelope way too far. Ripley 8 was pushing it way too far. Predator 2 and Predators handled themselves just fine without Dutch. I prefer a franchise "constant" be the event, not a character. But that's merely a personal preference.

I like Predator 2. For the longest time P1 and P2 was all there was. I loved it and Aliens most when I was a kid, because they were the most action heavy. My tastes might have changed somewhat, but the old feelings are still there.

P2 is like the cousin you grew up with but drifted apart from over time. You might not see them much anymore and now have important relationships with other people, but that doesn't mean family ain't still family.

Right, but in Die Hard McClane is that constant :P

The constant plots he's running into and foiling aren't?

...no? Besides one and three there's no real connection between any of those plots other than McClane. Like I said, it'd just be a series of unconnected action movies.

Individual Predators may die, but the running theme is intergalactic space hunters. "International thiefs-cum-terrorists" doesn't really have the same specificity to it.

Companies care about the bottom line, if Isolation had made money they would have made more. Obviously it didn't.

Man Dead Space was good. Coming from a person that rarely plays video games. I went out and bought a 360 and Dead Space just to play that game when it came out. Playing made me wish there was an Aliens game of similar vein. I too would've loved to have seen someone like Visceral do something with the franchise.

It's not "moving to the mobile platform all of a suddenly".  There have been mobile Aliens games going back to Alien for the Gameboy and Aliens Unleashed for mobile phones 16 years ago.  They haven't stopped making PC and console games in that time and aren't going to now.

You're talking handheld which is far different, Handheld is a portable game console. Mobile is games on the phone. Which is confusing for most and honestly even I had to get used to it.

I loved Dead Space 1 & 2, but I never really liked the overly loud and hyperactive Necromorphs. It became annoying at times and would even give you some eye roll moments as they crashed obnoxiously out of a vent or some such. I'm more of a fan of the slower/creepier and more menacing kind of monsters.

Didn't Fox claim it "just borrows the character of Amanda"?

That quote worried me that the game has no story and doesn't fit anywhere in any continuity.  Like it's just a mini game where Amanda saves a crew and that's it.

The quote was:
"We wanted to reach out to clarify that Alien: Blackout is a standalone game that shares Amanda Ripley as a main character but is not related to or a sequel of Isolation."
