QuoteComprehensive and definitive volume telling the complete story of how Alien was made, featuring new interviews with Ridley Scott and other production crew, and including many rarely-seen photos and illustrations from the Fox archives.

In 1979 a movie legend was born, as Twentieth Century-Fox and director Ridley Scott unleashed Alien and gave audiences around the world the scare of their lives.

To celebrate the movie's fortieth anniversary, author J.W. Rinzler (The Making of Star Wars) tells the whole fascinating story of how Alien evolved from a simple idea in the mind of writer Dan O'Bannon into one of the most memorable sci-fi horror thrillers of all time.

With brand new interviews with Ridley Scott and other key members of the original production crew, and featuring many never-before-seen photographs and artworks from the archives, The Making of Alien is the definitive work on this masterpiece of popular cinema

£45, release April 23rd.

I want to see the book. More is better, though it's hard to see where this book is going to add *that* much to the discussion. We've had so many books and so many "making of" videos already. Ridley will be current Ridley on the matter, not the same man who made the movie nearly 40 years ago. O'Bannon and Giger are permanently unavailable. The Alien Makers series has already revealed a lot of behind-the-scenes material. I doubt it will be "definitive." And yet, who knows? It could be grand!  ;D

Just got an email regarding my pre-order, this has been pushed back until July.
Bummer! I heard the book got pushed back until the end of April?

The original release was scheduled for the end of April (right around Alien Day), but as of today it is now slated July. There doesn't seem to be any word from Rinzler on Twitter as to why it was delayed.

Looks like the Alien Blueprints book, which was also to be released in April as well, was moved to September, too. Don't have that one on pre-order though, so I didn't get an email.

Looks like Canadian Amazon agrees, though they apparently didn't have the heart to send me an email. Anybody in the publishing biz know if they'd be in the manufacturing stage right now? Or can we perhaps hope for a little more added content?

Makes me wonder if something Alien-related, a big announcement is coming July.

Could be something more, but I'm going to keep expectations in check and tell me the date was shifted just to align this closer to the limited theatrical run of the film in October.

I recognise so many of these quotes. Giger's "I am on the Alien trip!" is not a reference to LSD per se; he was happy with the production (that week). Holm's quotes are from his autobiography. Giger's from his diary. Rinzler also misidentifies a quote from W.H. Auden. And some quotes from Hill's interview in Back Story IV, etc. Ridley's quotes seem new.

I'd love to see his other sources.

If you're there for Alien... not really. He dedicates a chapter to it, but mostly focuses on his personal life. He mentions some difficulty playing Ash. Has a funny story about John Hurt and people on the cast and crew pressing him to explain how he would act out the chestburster scene. Hurt said he'd use his "not inconsiderable imagination and just... do it!" Which shocked some people, because he bellowed the last part out, but Holm found it amusing. Holm was going through a lot of family issues at the time of filming so he kept himself to himself, mostly.

Wow, I'm trying to imagine the thought of 600 pages. That would be really something!

Will this be Unauthorized? If so, I hope you've done your research and the powers that be, let you be. Once in a while I read of non-fiction Marvel or Star Wars unauthorized book getting hit with infringment charges. I don't know if they're valid claims or not, but just the threat of litigation can squash an independent writer. I guess when a rights holder puts out their own non-fiction books, they can see unauthorized books as a threat to their revenue. And corporations are very protective of their money- making franchises these days.

Right now it''s 300 pages, A4, so in book form the page count might be higher :o I try to be as concise as possible (you'd have to ask Sil, SM or Hicks for their opinion, they've read an early extract).

I suppose right now I'm writing it on spec. I was talking to Titan Books back in... 2016/17 when I was first putting this together and they were seeking to publish Alien projects, but after a while Rinzler's book took precedence over there; they couldn't justify publishing both books. However they told me to feel free to seek other publishers, they gave me their blessing to do so. Right now my focus is finishing the book and making it the best it can be. I want it to blow my blog out of the water, but I was always writing for myself first and foremost. Hopefully you guys can tear into it one day soon.

Ah, a blessing from Titan seems a good thing to have in the ol' proverbial back pocket!

Hicks, SM and SiL are good company to bounce it off against. I might take a stab and add Elmazalman to that Alien feedback group as well.

I look forward to following its development! :)

Quote from: Valaquen on Jul 22, 2019, 02:50:55 PMI suppose right now I'm writing it on spec.

By the time you finish it, they might decide it's been a long enough gap they'll publish it anyway :P

I always got a kick out of you blog. Even if the book's no more informative than that it'd be a must-but for me.

I forget, does the book solely examine the first film, or multiple films?

It's entirely ALIEN, but also examines all the creative principles involved and SF a little more generally. If people like it, I'd write another on ALIENS, then ALIEN 3 with the same approach. I'd happily do that for the rest of my life tbh, but I have to earn a living at some point (the hardest challenge doing this is doing it poor, which means I'm necessarily doing it part-time, entirely on my dime.)

Maybe in the future, when the book's nearer completion, I'll have AVPG host the introduction or something, so folks can sample before buying.

Been eagerly awaiting the book, had it on pre-order from AmazonUK for quite a while now, looking forward to the postman delivering it yesterday but... not only did it not come, all i got on the day was an email from Amazon saying the delivery date has been rescheduled to Sept-Oct!
That's can't be right can it?
Anyone else got the message? Or, indeed got the book?

I have to say I love the cover to pieces. They could have gone with the tired old black n' green motif, but this white is really stylish, classy, and harkens back to the old '79 movie poster.

  • There's a new quote from Walt Simonson about having seen the 'box alien', and being told it was in the picture (this was in a sidebar - I don't know yet if there's anything about ol' boxy in the main text.)
When you have the time, check to see if the Walter Simonson quote is new or borrowed from the ALIEN: The Illustrated Story - Art Edition (2012). I'm assuming you have this publication.

I liked the written review. It gave more details. And the images weren't that visible in the video(I was viewing it on my phone) so that may be from that. Several of the full page illustrations I recognize from Ron Cobb's book "Color Vision". Maybe those are variations of rhe ones in Ron's book?

I'm not nearly as forgiving as you. I cancelled my pre-order and received a full refund. That was the first - and last time I will do business with them.

The good news is, I just received my first copy, not five minutes ago and I'm very happy! ;D I won't open it just yet, as I'll wait for the other two I pre-ordered to turn up. My copy arrived yesterday and I read the first 40 pages or so. It's pretty good so far. It's fairly detailed (but not as much as our home boy Val), setting up the story going into the production of who these people really were and where they were at this point in their life. No punches pulled so far.

Got mine the other day.

Definitely some pictures I've never seen of the production. Pretty sure I've never seen the set floor plans this clearly either, which are really interesting to see.

Opened up my copy and looked through it.
Concerning the book's illustrations; a sizeable portion of the production stills (as you correctly guessed) are familiar to anyone owning the DVD / BD sets. An abundance of artwork and storyboards / Ridleygrams, splashed across double pages (feels a little like filler), whilst rare and previously unseen production stills and continuity polaroids (new ones not included in the DVD / BD sets) are presented (very frustratingly) in micro size.

Oh god, some of those polaroids of Big Chap consigned to tiny 1x1cm prints on the edge of a page are just ... unnecessarily frustrating.

Still, it's a very good read. A couple of interesting details I've discovered from a quick perusal:

On page 248: Production unit stills for the attack on Lambert & Parker, reveal an interesting detail - Ripley's face can be clearly seen in the jet of steam, as she finds the remains of Parker & Lambert.
I didn't know Sigourney Weaver was involved in this shot.

On page 267: The total amount of filmed footage for ALIEN, was 163 hours and 22 minutes. I wonder how much of this still exists nearly 41-years later?

Read a couple more chapters before bed last night and still thoroughly enjoying. I think there's some details in here that are going to surprise a good few folk. It's helped me figure out that the red cylinder draft is actually the third one for the film. Never been able to place it before.

Nah, I think it's pretty straight forward about it. It talks about the red city as the second one that Hill rewrote to hand to Fox, then the red cylinder one as the one both Hill and Giler wrote next and was given to Scott. I don't think either are really that well known.

Tbh I've not really read any of the scripts fro the first movie. Or in fact any of the shooting scripts for any of the films other than Resurrection (can't remember what compelled me to give that one a look).

Mostly I hate reading scripts. Dunno why but the format grates with me. I'd be a shit Hollywood agent.

Rinzler is good.
He seems like a smart and honest guy from the way he talks in interviews and the work that he's done.

And this book is WELL worth the 35 buck I got it for pre-order.
I think it might be 35 bucks worth of good heavy paper.

Its heavy.
Well made.

But he said himself that this was more of a contract for hire job.
It wasn't that same kind of thing he did through his close association with Lucasfilm for the Star Wars books.

In fact, as skeevy neu-disney is wont to do,
they're probably just exploiting his name value rfom the Star Wars books to stick his name on an Alien book,
the same way they just stuck Kasdan's name on the script for a jj abrams star wars ripoff.

The point being that this book is well assembled physically,
good stuff in it becasue he got access to everything,
but it wasn't the LABOR OF SUPER LOVE that an Alien superfan like Val will do.

You can see that he respects the movie,
theres no callousness or disrespect to it,
...like a jj abrams...
but you can see and feel how it was a contract job when your reading it.

Well done, but a contract job.

This had nothing to do with Disney. Rinzler was doing final checks on the book when Disney was finalising the purchase of Fox.

He did this work for hire, yes, but the Disney rage is grossly misplaced.

It's definitely gorgeous and there are some fantastic large size reprints of concept art. Not much new photographic material. I hadn't seen the Elliot Scott concepts from '76, although I see now that they have been online.
As far as the actual alien is concerned, I don't think there is anything new. Giger's alien is still the definitive text on the making of the monster.

There's an interesting bit of info I came across on my initial look. A breakaway prop computer terminal or wall (I've forgotten which one now) was constructed for Ian Holm/Ash to sink his fist into (see comic book & novelisation) - a demonstration of robot strength.

The red planet concept after the first draft referenced Petra as the design of the Alien homeworld, you can see this also in Alien Covenant. Most probably a nod to the developing original script.

I honestly thought The Archive was anything but definitive. I was actually really disappointed by it - it felt really lightweight and other than a couple of tidbits for Resurrection I don't remember it telling me anything that wasn't already out there.

By all accounts, Rinzler's book is lightyears more comprehensive and illuminating.

The Rinzler book collects a lot of old quotes from previous book/magazine/DVD/Blu-ray sources, but also plenty of new material.

I'm going through the book now. Definitely p*sses all over the Vault, and is the best 'Making Of' on the subject.

Can't wait to see the volume on ALIENS.

Finished it, I couldnt put it down despite knowing Anthology extras by memory by now. Very well written and just oozing with great details and nearly daily anecdotes from the production

Heres my brief review and few pics for those who havent gotten it yet or wonder if theres anything new
