Title: Audiobook Recommendations
Post by: Cosmic Incubation on Sep 16, 2022, 04:33:59 PM
So I've decided to start listening to audiobooks since I lack the free-time and attention span for regular books apparently lol. I've read a handful of the Alien/Predator comics over the years, but never journeyed into the novels much (probably due to aforementioned decline in attention span and free-time lol).

I just finished listening to the audiobook for Aliens: Phalanx last night. I always heard good things about it. Aside from some of the character dialogue that I found a bit eye-rolling, it was a pretty good story! The mix of xenos with a medieval setting felt fresh and interesting! Would love to see a comic or film adaptation of some kind!

Now that I'm done with Phalanx, I need some recommendations for what to listen to next! (I have an Audible subscription btw)

I prefer Alien stories, but also want to check out any good ones for AVP and Predator too!

Gimme the cream-of-the-crop, absolute best novels/audiobooks to check out!

Appreciate any recommendations in advance  :D

So the first 3 novels that Titan released have actually been adapted into audio dramas by Dirk Maggs so I'd recommend those first as it's like listening to a descriptive movie with different voice actors for different characters, sound effects and a score. So those are:

Out of the Shadows
River of Pain
Sea of Sorrows

There's also the full on audio book of those as well if you'd prefer listen to someone read the whole book. If you happen to like those stories then I'd recommend moving onto the Rage War (AVP) trilogy as it's kind of a sequel to "Sea of Sorrows". These three books (Predator: Incursion, Alien: Invasion, Alien Vs Predator: Armageddon) are only available in the audio book format.

However the two most acclaimed Alien books would be Alex White's "Cold Forge" and the sequel "Into Charybdis". Hope this helps!

This definitely helps! Thank you! :D

Thankfully it doesn't seem like there's a shortage of Alien/Predator audiobooks to listen to

Out of the Shadows has the best production values out of any of them IMO, although how much you can tolerate the plot is up to you. The Alex White books The Cold Forge and Into Charybdis are very popular around these parts, although I couldn't stand the narrator on Cold Forge so I'll have to actually sit down and read it at some point. You may not struggle there though, so it's worth trying out.

Thank you!

Read the synopsis of Out of the Shadows. Tbh, I'm not a huge fan of the idea of a story involving Ripley between Alien and Aliens, but I'm willing to handwave it as a non-canon what-if type story. Especially if it's good!

Cold Forge seems to be one that I consistently see a lot of praise for.

It's very well done as an audio-drama, it's just a huge contrivance story wise, so there's good and bad. I enjoyed listening to it on a long bus ride, even if I rolled my eyes hard a few times, just because the acting etc is quite good.

The Audible dramas are some of my favourite things to come out of the franchise in the last few years. I definitely recommend giving them a go!

Thanks Hicks :D

Definitely adding onto my list!
I've heard you guys mention some of them on the podcast a few times. Especially the William Gibson Alien 3 one.
