Title: AvP Galaxy Gets Hands-On With Preview Of Aliens: Fireteam Elite With 15 Minutes of Gameplay!
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Jul 21, 2021, 03:24:48 PM

We've got just about a month to go until the release of Aliens: Fireteam Elite, the new co-op survival shooter by Cold Iron Studios. After only hearing rumors about the game since development was announced in January of 2018, the game was finally revealed to us in March of 2021 as Aliens: Fireteam. Now with the recent slight name change to Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and pre-orders with their incentives available, the game is finally on the cusp of release.

The folk over at Cold Iron Studios invited us to get a taste of Aliens: Fireteam Elite with a limited preview build of the game. So Alien vs. Predator Galaxy staff members Corporal Hicks, Darkness and Ridgetop kitted up the latest hardware that the Colonial Marines had to offer to experience some of what is in store for us all come the end of August.

And we're all nerdy fanboys so that meant we came out of the experience with a thought or two to share, and plenty of gameplay footage to accompany our enthralling commentary!

How fast does the game feel? I mean, not the pace of gameplay, but a general walkthrough: speed of level/campaigns completing.

If you guys played Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, does AFTE feels closer to it or to L4D?

Especially if there are 3 sides in RE:ORC, i.e., Umbrella forces, US forces and monsters.

Didn't even think about an Operation Raccoon City comparison as it's been so long since I've played that game. RE:ORC had its issues but I still quite enjoyed it, I do think that's a fair comparison with this one, if it would've gotten more things right. The squad-dynamics here seem much deeper. Can't say it leans to one of the other really, the but the game does also have a number of prominent Left 4 Dead elements.

As a fan of RE classics (PS1 ports) I did not care about it when it was released in 2012. Also I was not into games with sidekicks either. But I got it lately on PC (thanks to similarities with AFTE and aesthetics) and I was surprised how good gameplay mechanics it has. Not perfect but it became my favorite RE shooter game.

Really detailed work guys to get this done in the timeframe you had. I kinda wish I'd have put my two cents in but I felt like I'm not as qualified as you guys to comment on it as I very rarely play online multiplayer these days.

I'm sure it'll do good and find its audience. There is a lot of good things in there. It is non-stop action, you very rarely have a chance to breathe between the hoards of Xenomorphs.

I really like how detailed the customisation aspects seem to be, both in terms of cosmetics and stats that'll affect gameplay. Means we should be able to spend a decent amount of time tweaking stuff between missions and that it's not just going to be 100% pew-pew.

On a similar note I also like how big the Endeavour looks like it's going to be too. Definitely going to spend a while just looking around and exploring before I even start the first mission.

A very important question. Especially, if there is going to be little time to breath between Xenomorph hordes.

Looks can be deceiving. We were mostly playing on standard, but when we started playing 'intense,' it got quite challenging. There are two higher difficulty settings than intense: Extreme, and Insane. They scare me.

No, there is a heavy grenade launcher weapon. I was surprised with the lack of underslung attachments for the Pulse Rifle, but I guess they didn't want it to be the go-to AR when there are so many others. It's still a fantastic feeling weapon.

There is but it's mainly on the ship hub area which you can go to by choice in-between missions, or automatically at the end of a campaign. There are still some moments to catch your breath in the missions themselves.

I have a few questions if its ok:

1 - Do you know if there is a finite number of Aliens that come at you in a given section of a level. For example if you are in a specific part of the level will the Aliens just keep coming at you until you move onto a new section or can you mow them all down and have a breather before moving onto the next batch?

2 - I assume that
Spoiler
the alien alluded to in the video that we would be familiar with from infiltrator will be the pale alien known as Seven?

btw thanks for the video, i really enjoyed it and appreciated what you all bring for us fans.

I really want a photomode! Since there is  offline capabilities there is no reason for it not to. The moment they drop that hint, i would be willing to shell out for the full deluxe version or just the base for that matter.
People will go crazy with photomode with depth of field, lens types, etc.etc.

Acid from regular Xenos on standard difficulty is not too bad, the more acid-specialized Xenos like the 'Spitter' or 'Burster' will be more damaging. On the higher difficulties though, you'll really have to be mindful of acid damage from all of them.

The Prequel novel allows for them through vagaries and I'd be surprised if this actually explains them in any substantial way.

Are there climbable ladders? Ive seen in the citidel location there is a statue of the engineers from the torso up. A ladder is slanted on his shoulder to the top of his head. I'm just wondering if taking ladders and traversing up them are allowed like in The Last of Us or more accurately Death Stranding, for example? Maybe there are hidden areas to discover?

Yeah but that's a clone Alien, the rules do not necessarily follow that for the rest of the standard species, besides we actually see the Runner spit acid but not the Drone.

It is specifically mentioned about them using local-wildlife as hosts. I can't remember if they relate that to the differing kinds in the game, but they certainly discuss not having seen certain types of Aliens before.

Acid melting the walls and floors to expose parts of a map to travel would be a interesting way to use the alien blood as something useful and not just deadly.
This game looks better then hunting grounds so far.

I wanted to ask what you feel the experience is going to be like for a single player with NPCs? Im not a multiplayer gamer and prefer a lone experience. I appreciate this game isnt tailored for the likes of myself but I am interested in it regardless.

Is there a lot of story going on and are there any quiet moments that lets the tension build up?

Now I need to rewatch Alien 3 Assembly Cut to see the acid spitting. How did I miss it? Perhaps I remember Resurrection's spitting scene more because Christie was one of my fav characters in that film.

Thanks for replying, aalso another important question:
Ive viewed a preview video from another youtuber and they were at 4K, where as the others were prodominantly 1080p or so. I would like to know what available settings were there for you (assuming this was a PC only preview) that we should know about (such as AA, shadow details, resolution settings, ) given if we aren't allowed to have a demo at least we might prepare to have the best hardware to play this game. It must be exciting being apart of the review process. I hope they aren't pulling your chain too much!
Can you offer any insights as to the minimum requirements? Did you suffer anything with your hardware? Tell us what you used?

Not sure what the minimum requirements are but I have an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super and it ran fine on my machine, seemed well optimized. On the highest settings there was only one area where framerate slowed slightly when a lot was going on, but this was an unfinished build. I use a 1080p monitor so did not try out 4K at all.

I noticed you can see the settings menu in this video:

We have an additional clip of Aliens: Fireteam Elite gameplay to show off from our recent experience with the preview build of the game! In this footage we tried out one of the challenge cards: "Explosions!" Which is a gameplay mutator that changes all of the Runner Xenomorphs into weaker Bursters. With this many Bursters running around it was a real challenge to avoid getting completely drenched in acid!

As a disclaimer, the footage in this clip is from a work in progress version of the game which Cold Iron invited us to try.

Im assuming some cards only affect you while other cards affect the entire team?

Such as that head shots card, that would suck if everyone had it. They would work much harder if not on their own and as a team.
