Is it possible to read this whilst ignoring the film then?

Absolutely. To be frank, after watching the movie, felt like two totally different universe of the franchise.

I definitely prefer the prequel over the finished film.

I've been thinking a lot about this a lot and feel it would have made a better film as well.  While it would not deviate much from the original 1987 film, it would have been a fantastic sequel.  The following elements would have been fascinating to explore:

  • The drug bust scene with the predator causing chaos would be a great dynamic to see onscreen
  • The biker and carnival battles are downright terrifying
  • Flashback to Pappy's Vietnam battle
  • Keyes or other staff releasing the predator from confinement leading to a more interesting breakout scene
  • Explore the dynamic of the Reapers ala the 1987 original

Heck even keep the global warming angle where the predators are doing more scouting to see if Earth would be a suitable new home, I really wouldn't care as it would mean more encounters

Not only that but the prequel is almost completely unrelated to the film...I'm not even sure why they called it a prequel...maybe because Traeger was in the cast?

It's obvious that, were it a true prequel, the events of the film would be much different (e.g., 2 fricken predator escapes...are you kidding me?)

That's a sad revelation.

Having now seen the film, I now kinda wish they'd used the prequel novel instead, and used the movie as the tie in.

I see. Thank you.

Yeah, the novel can almost work as a stand-alone piece as most of the plot threads are more or less resolved by the end of the book.

I really liked the prequel novel, it was fun to watch, and only the last quarter of the ending fight felt a bit too long.

All in all, it was interesting from either sides. It gave a glimpse of the predator culture / ideology (based on this book I thought the whole dna stuff could work, even if it was mentioned in only half of a sentence), but nothing detailed. There were some great parts, my only question was why they had to use the word yautja. But it's just a minor issue. The cloaking was fine, I'd say in the last fight. Pred tech evolves too.

The whole Stargazer line, the Reapers and the politics behind it was awesome and exciting. Trager's character seemed really good and interesting, but Pappy gave most food for thought.

The whole build-up was great. And also connectible with earlier but later movies, literature too. If you have read Hunters 2 already, you know what I mean. Stargazer can be a really good addition to the pred universe, I hope we'll see them around.

I'm actually reading right now...I think it's just as good as South China Sea, with more detailed characterisation of the Yautja.

Pleasantly surprised by this

This sounds almost as good as South China Sea

It's better than South China Sea, imo.  More characterization of the predator's thought process and motivations.

My review is now up :)

Great review btw, I agree 100%.

Regarding the cloak..
Spoiler
.I had simply assumed they upgraded technology at that point, especially with the focus on evolving and the forthcoming "Upgrade" as well.

Just finished the book. I really liked the predator as a character, and there were lots of chapters from his perspective and hints of lore to keep me happy! There were a couple bits that could prove intriguing for the movie...

Spoiler

I'm curious as to why Keyes deliberately let the predator escape, and if, as speculated in the very end, the pred really did manage to send a transmission out before the gauntlet explosion.

Spoiler
Was it meant to be Keyes? I thought it was one of Traeger's random allies.

Oh yes, I went back to check and you're right:
Spoiler
Keyes examines the predator earlier, and when the man comes in to let the pred escape, the pred think that he hasn't seen this human before. I think I just misread because the man was described as pale and blonde and I automatically thought of Keyes!

Spoiler

I've read the book 3 times now and this point still has me turned around.  In the film, Keyes tells Bracket not to let the predator get away.  However, in the predator novelization, Keyes is kind of an unhinged / wacky scientist that I could see letting the predator escape.  Fun conjecture, regardless.

Does this book have some yautja PoV?

Plenty, just posted about it in the novelization thread lol. I think it's a book well worth picking up, just for those POV scenes alone. Was so interesting getting more perspective on their "view" of humanity.
If I remember right, the novelization for the original movie has some Predator POV stuff. I know the Predator2 novelization does.

I'm kind of curious if the bio helmet we see in the display case next to jungle hunters  belongs to the predator in this novel.

I wondered where that mask came from and I like this explanation.
About the only logical explanation I can think of. Although traeger only indicates that there were 2 known visits. Then again we see lex's spear. Hell if I know 🤷‍♂️
Traeger only calls out those two specifically, but he never indicates they're the only two.
you know what I mean
