Title: Marvel Announces New Anthology Series, Alien: Black, White and Blood
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Oct 17, 2023, 06:41:51 PM

Marvel has just announced Alien: Black, White and Blood, a new Alien anthology comic series! Marvel mainstays such as Deadpool, Moon Knight and Wolverine (which also features a storyline written by Alien: Thaw & Descendant writer Declan Shalvey) have all enjoyed their own Black, White and Blood series, and now it’s the Xenomorph’s turn!

Featuring three different stories taking place across the four issue limited series, Alien: Black, White and Blood is set to hit comic book store shelves in February, presumably running alongside Alien: Descendant.

ALIEN: BLACK, WHITE & BLOOD will be four issues of unbridled violence with shocking stories crafted by some the industry's hottest talents. Previous BLACK, WHITE & RED installments have spotlighted deadly icons, from Wolverine to Darth Vader. Now, it's time for the Xenomorphs to be unleashed in this epic format!

Marvel Comics and 20th Century Studios present this kill-fest of an anthology in chest-rending artistic detail, brought to life in bold, black, white, red—and, when things get extra dangerous—GREEN!

Here are the tales fans can look forward to in the debut issue:

  • Superstars Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and brilliant artist Michael Dowling (BLACK CAT, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN) kick off “Utopia,” a generations-spanning saga that will be told across all four issues! Soaring through space to find a perfect world, a society descends into darkness as they're shaped by their fear of the Xenomorphs!
  • Fan-favorite writer Ryan Cady (WINTER GUARD) and Marvel newcomer Devmalya Pramanik explore the limits of compassion in “Maternal Instincts.” On a deep space vessel, a small child is the sole survivor of a Xenomorph slaughter and her only hope for salvation is the ship's comforting and guiding AI computer unit.
  • Rising stars Stephanie Phillips (CAPWOLF & THE HOWLING COMMANDOS, COSMIC GHOST RIDER) and Marcelo Ferreira (MOON KNIGHT: CITY OF THE DEAD) deliver a tale of guts, glory and the most exhilarating of games in “The Hunt.” Xenomorphs become the main attraction when Weyland-Yutani gives wealthy thrill-seekers a chance to hunt down the galaxy's deadliest species.

Marvel Announces New Anthology Series, Alien: Black, White and Blood

Well, we are waiting for the next series on Alien from Shelvey, we have an annual issue (the second one already), and an anthology here. And where are the announcements on the Predator? Or what, one omnibus, two story arcs, a crossover with Wolverine and that's it?

I'm still waiting on an announcement of an 'Aliens vs Predator: The Original Years' hardcover (which hopefully includes the Prometheus comics as part of Fire and Stone / Life and Death arc that were missed from the Aliens set)

I would really enjoy good Alien anthology. Bug Hunt missed the mark completely, but maybe in comic format it will be better. We could get a nice roundup of various stories and art styles. As long as the're are decently made of course.

Very cool! I just recently read through the 4 issue "Darth Vader Black White & Red" which was my first exposure to this Marvel tradition. It had 3 shorts per issue with one of the shorts being a 4 part story with one part per issue. Also the art is primarily black and white with accents of red (hence the name). So based on the press release "Utopia" will be the 4 parter and "Maternal Instincts" & "The Hunt" will be the 2 standalone shorts for the 1st issue, which means we'll be getting another 6 shorts in the following 3 issues! Also very excited to have overlapping comic series!

Did they mean Black, White, and Ketchup? It looks like someone flung red paint or overly processed ketchup everywhere.

Gonna be hard to this anthology seriously if they can't even get blood the right color lol.

They had a very rocky start but they're certainly getting there! I really enjoyed Thaw and the Predator ones have been solid despite some gripes of the main character.

I picked up issue 1 today and wow! I was thoroughly impressed with Black, White & Blood! The three stories were all great and I'm excited to see where two of them go.

The first story Utopia was the most ALIEN feeling. It's always fun to see the universe from the perspective of the UPP.
Spoiler
It's an alien loose on a socialist Halo ring!
[close]
The artwork was good, you don't see too much of the alien but in one panel it looks like a praetorian from Fireteam. This is the story I'm most excited to see the end of because there's a cool idea of characters being forced to choose between dying for their morals or going against what they believe is right to survive. It reminds me of Salvation in that aspect.

I've been going through the early Dark Horse era comics and The Hunt felt like a story from that time. At first I didn't think I'd like it as much but it's entertaining.

Maternal Instinct was great. Short, sweet, and incredibly tense.
Spoiler
There was a moment at the end I thought a character had been betrayed and while that would have been a very Alien ending I'm glad that's not the direction it took. I wanted to see the character make it out. Making the reader care about a character like that in so few pages I think speaks to the strength of the story. The idea of a Mu/th/ur computer helping a child as a parent would is really cool. Maybe a little out there for an AI to care that much for human life but for the purpose of the story it's fine.
[close]
The entire time reading it I was thinking to myself god this story would fit perfectly with the gameplay of Alien Isolation.

We'll have to see where this series goes but in my opinion this isn't something I'd sleep on as an Alien fan!

Does anyone have experience with the other Black, White & Blood books? Is it supposed to be a thing they only use those 3 colours? Because it really doesn't bother me. I loved all 3 art styles on display here.

Like Crew Expendable, I really really enjoyed the first issue. As soon as I thought it was going to be from the UPP perspective, I got excited. Love the moral quandary on display here, love the use of the Praetorian, and I'm eager to see that one continue (as it's a "to be continued").

The Hunt was a fun short too. I also agree it felt a little Dark Horse and I dig it. I liked where they took the character motivation with this one, felt like a nice little twist on it, but still felt very Alien.

Maternal Instinct was another good Alien short. Perhaps a little more I to the AI than we usually see MUTHUR depicted with, but I liked it, it worked for me. Also enjoyed the twists in it, it all paid off very nicely.

The first one seems to have slightly different arm positions and maybe the body angle is different by a few degrees. The second one seems completely traced, just from the back of the 3D model. That's disappointing But at least good looking, dynamically posed statues are being traced, not clumsily posed, wrongly proportioned figures. If you're gonna trace, trace the best looking, most dynamic stuff out there, so not bad actually...

Yeah, it's traced, but it's kinda amusing to me seeing how this is evolving. We now at least have traced good looking statues with some reposing! What a breakthrough.... Maybe in a few years we'll upgrade to no traced Aliens? But maybe that's too hard, it's not like anyone has ever successfully drawn stunning original Aliens...

It'd be funny if we one day see an Alien traced from a still in the films, or from promotional stills of the film Aliens. Why don't they just download the good looking models of Stompy and the Aliens from Fireteam Elite? Do some basic reposing in the software and there you go. Beautiful, consistent Aliens...

Fair, those outlines are obviously traced. Your GIFs too small for me to tell if the detailing has been too. But honestly, I'm not offended by these. Maybe it's because they actually look decent and fit within the perspective and feel of the panel. Maybe because they're not poses I instantly recognize, but these aren't winding me up like the figure tracing.

Just read #2. I'm continuing to enjoy the UPP story and very much enjoying the artwork in this one and eager to see the next part. My only gripe is they used Pulse Rifle looking rifles, and I wish they'd have tried to make something look different for the UPP.

Wasn't a huge fan of the second story, Morsel. I'm not sure I really understood what it was trying to do. As I was going through it it seemed quite standard fare, and then
Spoiler
the woman gets left along. The dialogue starts talking about her dying, and I wonder if she's already got an illness or something which could have been interesting.
[close]
But then it just ends with no conclusion. We got M4/16 looking weapon too which I was disappointed by.

First Day left me with a smile at the end of it but wasn't too keen on it. I wasn't a big fan of the style of the Aliens to start with, but I loved
Spoiler
that host tree thing going on.

Nothing really much to it, or to say about it.

I think the first issue was much stronger over all.

I was reminded that Alien Black, White, and Blood was a thing and rushed to read both issues to it's current point. I'm super glad that we got a look into the UPP side of things and I hope that means we can touch on other areas too like the Three World Empire, The Independent Core Star Systems, and The Frontier. Feels like that is a mine of untapped potential that has been neglected for decades. It's why I appreciate Fireteam Elite so much, it expanded the entire universe as a real fleshed out universe that had historic events, inventions, conflicts between powers and people.

As for the tracing, at this point expect this to be the norm until the higher ups start paying their artists more and lessen the deadline timing. There is a saying "work smarter, not harder" so if there is an Alien figure that they can use to convey the action and thought of the being without spending so much time, they will do it.

It's very hit and miss.

Inserting the Gibson version of the UPP into the universe continues to be a mistake. The story they're in, is okay so far however.

Spoiler
The Hunt could've gone with being longer.  Despite the force fields... ugh...

Maternal Instinct was meh.  Not bad, not good. Gave a Mother computer WAY too much personality.

Zen donut story was entirely disposable. Ditto the story with the two marines.  Employed by the Company apparently?  What mars the writing a lot in these stories in how it strays from the source material rather than building on it.

All that said, the art is all pretty great in every story.

I'm after issue 2 and I'm enjoying it. As it is with anthologies, stories can be hit or miss, but some of them felt like older DH shorts, nice little miniatures, without much depth. But I'm enjoying the one with UPP. It's first time I see continuing story withing Black White Blood format from Marvel and it's nice. Having one story to absorb You to the series and two additional ones in each issue works nicely. But title should be "Black, White, Blood & Green" because there are suprising amounts of that Last one 😅

And actually using green colour is the best variant cover. I always imagined how it would look like if dome was partialy peeled off the head.
