I always figured that the aliens were red in the comic to help the reader tell the difference between the two hives.  They wern't actually bright red.  Just the way I interpreted it.

Not that good really, I meen I may have liked it a tiny bit better if they were normal aliens trained like in Aliens Omnibus 1, not Yellow crappy aliens.
