I couldn't stand Monster Squad really. I know it was the hot property in 1987, but I consider Predator to be more fun.

Hence why I brought him up: Black wanted to give his buddy something to work on and they came up with this elaborate and cheesy version of the Predator.

All totally fair. I like Night of the Creeps a lot more than Monster Squad anyway. My problem with The Predator isn't its tone, though. Honestly The Nice Guys or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang meets Predator sounds kinda awesome to me. My main problems with the movie is whose story it wants to be about and the plot is totally incoherent.

Yeah. I was never opposed to The Predator's tone. Something a bit sillier, in that Predator 2 spirit, honestly had me super excited in the buildup to it. Helps that I love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and The Nice Guys. Night of the Creeps rocks too! I haven't seen The Monster Squad in ages, barely remember it at this point.

But yeah, the intended tone and the talent involved had me very excited for The Predator, on paper.

Hooooo boy, that execution though...

Tonally the film is all over the place really. But I mainly thought it was weird as Black pitched it as a triple A treatment of the franchise and then did something that could have done with way less budget than what he got. A screball comedy with a predator in there could be done for about half the money that they shot it for.

Initially the finale was going to be a lot bigger and lot more blockbuster-y. There was a whole climax with various Predator hybrids (that sounded to me like the Gremlin crossbreeds from Gremlins 2) that was shot, but scrapped when they retooled the entire third act.

KiramidHead

Yeah, that much more absurd climax would at least have been more interesting. That and Olmos being there.

Still Collating...

Predator 2 was charming, campy, comic book like but still very dark. The Predator was cringe worthy to me personally. From the marvel humor, to the plot, to the dialogue. I envy those who find enjoyment in that film, I really do. But I'd watch any and all Alien and Predator entries before I watch that again. Predator 2 is leagues better and different to The Predator, in my humble opinion.

Even marvel as more varied humour than repetitive sex jokes.

KiramidHead

Just seemed like Shane Black humor to me, just with a bigger than usual amount of misses.

Note that "on ice for x hundred years" is still conventional linear progression of time to everything not frozen, so it's an entirely different concept.
I'm directly address how people think time travel will be involved to have the flintlock fall into Greyback and Harrigan's hands in 1997 as many believe Act 4 is like in the 2100s. I'm addressing that point exactly with my questions.

[cancerblack]

Nobody is saying it goes back in time from ~2100.

Which I disagree on as much as DNA tinkering, or the final act of Killer of Killers...

exorcissy72

Not saying the DNA tinkering idea was good, but the original ending sounded 1000 times more interesting than the one that was made.

I really dug the ending of Killer of Killers and to me it felt in line with stuff the Predators would do. The genetic modification always felt out of place as something the Predators would do, but engaging in a blood sport/religious ritual? That seems like a Predator thing.
