Tyranids is what drew me in to 40K as well. Back in Middle School, I was heavily into Starcraft and my friends showed me a warhammer 40K catalogue and I saw the Tyranids and I was cool, they look like Zergs. Forgive 12 year old me, I didn't know anything about WH40K before then.

Can't always remember if it was rumour or fact. But Starcraft was allegedly  originally going to be a Warhammer game, hence you you have Space Marines(Terran), Aeldari(Protoss), and Tyranids (Zerg)
Actually it was Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Warcraft: Orcs and Humans was originally a Warhammer Fantasy game.
Although Starcraft does show alot of similarities, especially in the Alpha build but the Protoss were originally going to be Space Vampires. Also Starcraft heavily borrows from other science fiction franchises as well like ALIENS, STAR TREK, and STAR WARS

It's even more convoluted than that, but suffice to say there's been a lot of fairly egregious "inspiration" on both sides since the falling out over Warcraft.

Yeah, Blizzard does have a track record of "Borrowing" heavily from other series. I remember back when Burning Crusades was coming out, the in-game speech one of the alliance characters was almost pulled straight from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The dialogue was extremely similar to Aragorn's arousing Black Gate Speech

Of the chaos factions I prefer Khorne over the other three

What would be the best starter kit if I do get into the tabletop warhammer 40K game

I'm open to Imperium, Eldar, Tyranid, Ork, Necron, Tau and Blood Chaos

The biggest of the main starter sets comes with two full combat patrol sized armies, Tyranids and space marines, as well as some big plastic terrain, fold out card playing areas that can combine into a bigger one, a physical copy of the rulebook, and the usual tat like dice and rulers.

If you like Tyranids it's definitely the best way to start at the moment. You can sell the space marines to recoup some money too if you really don't want them.

Ouch thats expensive

Working Class Corpse

There are ways to get them cheaper, but it can still be an expensive hobby. Could wet your toes and just get enough minis for a Kill Team type game.

For a full two player set up out of the box it's really not bad. And like the post above me says, don't buy from GW direct. You can usually get 20% off, then get back ~30% putting the space marines on eBay. So really you're looking at half that price.

Well I usually do that to support the hobby.
