The very first look we got at Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus was a set picture of the Renaissance Station, in which fans very quickly noticed an iconic piece of scenery from Creative Assembly’s much loved Alien: Isolation – the save station. In fact, I think it would fair to say for a lot of fans, a creative’s opinion of the game is quite important to us.
Talking to Inside Total Film Podcast – for an episode being released this week and being teased by GamesRadar – Fede shared his opinion on Alien: Isolation and how it reinforced his opinion on the effectiveness of the Alien.
"Alien: Isolation was kind of what made me see that Alien could truly be terrifying and done well [today]. I played a few years after it came out. Don't Breathe was coming out. Or was I waiting for Don't Breathe to come out, and I was playing the game. That's why, at the time, I was like, 'f**k, if I could do anything, I would love to do Alien and scare the audience again with that creature and those environments.' I was playing, and realising how terrifying Alien could be if you take it back to that tone."
“If while watching #AlienRomulus , you see one of these (and there are many...) what do you think it means?”
And the Isolation homages go further than the save stations simply being set decoration in the film, Fede utilizied them as a visual warning that something very bad is about to happen to the characters.
"The movie is set up in a way [that] every time something bad is about to happen, you will see a phone. In the game, every time you knew there's a phone you'd go, 'f**k, I'm about to go into some bad set-piece.' It's the same thing here. You'll see they're planted strategically throughout the film. When you see the phone, it's like: brace for impact."
