Title: Nightmare Alley (Guillermo del Toro Noir Film)
Post by: KiramidHead on May 29, 2019, 12:47:55 AM
Expected to start shooting in September.

QuoteHN Entertainment has confirmed that Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro's (The Shape of Water) next film Nightmare Alley will shoot in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The thriller will reportedly star Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, who will be next seen in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood this July.

The film is based on the 1947 Fox movie that starred Tyrone Power as an ambitious young con-man who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the table on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.

We've learned that production will begin on September 30th and is expected to wrap on January 28th.

We previously revealed the production team would include cinematographer Dan Lausten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, The Shape of Water) and production designer Tamara Deverell (The Strain, Star Trek: Discovery).

Leonardo DiCaprio is also expected to lead Martin Scorcese's next film Killers of The Flower Moon (was expected to shoot over the spring/summer), but the production start on that film could be delayed again because of the extensive post-production of Marty's The Irishman for Netflix.

Fox Searchlight has yet to give Nightmare Alley an official release date.

Caught this last night. Guillermo del Toro, I could kiss you.

Though I am not familiar with the original novel, I have now watched both adaptations of the story this week and I will say that I find both the 1947 original and Guillermo del Toro's iteration to be two totally complimentary works – in the future, if I'm ever in the mood to watch one version, it will almost certainly be immediately followed up on by the other. On the surface, this might feel like something that should fall outside of del Toro's wheelhouse, but the material fits his sensibilities like a glove and he brings Nightmare Alley to life with all of the stylistic and thematic flourishes that make his body work so distinctly his own. Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite contemporary filmmakers, and I find that he is on the top of his game delivering one of his best works (and one of my favorite movies of 2021) in Nightmare Alley.

As an aside, I am so glad that I got the chance to see this on the big screen on an opening preview night, before it gets kicked to the wayside like so many 20th Century Studios and Searchlight titles have since Disney's acquisition of Fox.
