Wow see that's something I never knew and something I actually think is pretty cool when comparing to what I thought was going on in that scene. I'll have to read the script and see how it's mentioned.

The script he runs a humming device over the blades to sharpen them; I'm guessing they just grabbed an existing piece of kit on the set and said "whatever, it's sci fi".

I always assumed he was cleaning them, althought it makes about as much sense as sharpening them with a laser.

Indeed.When I was a brat in the late eighties, I used to think it was a way for the
pred to answer to the challenge, by showing Dutch his glowing red blades from afar.
