Title: The Predator @ Comic-Con
Post by: ace3g on Jun 20, 2018, 12:17:30 AM
QuoteWe may not know who will own Fox in the future, but we do have an idea of what the company has planned for Comic-Con. Specifically, we've heard it'll have a panel dedicated to Shane Black's upcoming film The Predator in Hall H this year. And while Fox has a ton of other in-the-works films that would absolutely fit in at Comic-Con (Alita: Battle Angel, The Darkest Minds, Bad Times at the El Royale, Ad Astra, and others), it's unlikely any of those will be mentioned there.

The biggest question whenever Fox decides to have a Hall H panel is "Will the X-Men be at Comic-Con?" This year, the smart money says... probably not. Predator will be the main focus and there are simply too many other big movies Fox has to release before the February, June, and August releases of Dark Phoenix, Gambit, and New Mutants, respectively. However, Dark Phoenix and New Mutants are done with principal production, so if Fox wanted to make a splash with a big surprise, it absolutely could.

I'll be heading to Comic-Con this year. Depending on when this panel happens I'll try to be at this panel, since won't be in San Diego until Thursday afternoon and there's several other panels I'd like to attend (and I also want to go on the show floor and the offsite attractions of course).

What ever fox decides to do they need to pull the cat out of the hat because judging by YouTube views The Predator currently sits just above four million views, in comparison the new Halloween trailer has fifth teen million views and that film cost a lot less and it isn't getting the 3D treatment, If the character that is Dutch from the original film was involved this film would have better momentum.

I think it's an era problem. Our time isn't the time for this type of movie, reminiscent from the 80's etc... I'm sure it won't be a box office hit either. I wish it though.

You're kidding right? 80s Nostalgia has been riding high for years.

The problem is, they have not been putting out the stops to get this thing exciting people, and that first teaser was a horrible, horrible, misstep.

No i don't, this type of 80's nostalgia regarding a moribund franchise don't fit with our era, the first teaser didn't help at all obviously.

And i set aside Stranger Things, different format, different clientele, this is cinema, movie theater material.

Regarding Halloween trailer success, this is a 70's movie sequel, not 80's.

Bring on the 1990s nostalgia.

Film grain! Practical effects that are just on the wrong side of the realistic/unrealistic line! Early CG! Clones! Mutants!

Same. Looks like The Predator panel is confirmed for 10:30am (Pacific) on Thursday the 19th.

It is the only big thing for that day so hopefully a lot of online movie pundits see the panel, see some gruesome R rated footage, and hype it up for the masses as the convention kicks off. I cant wait!

I'm not big on the generic sleek sci-fi ship, and the mask still looks a tad small, but I've wanted to see a predator working at a computer or something for ages so I'm very happy to see this!

Man mask does look small in this photo)) It feels like predator wearing S-size helmet instead of L-size  ;D

But the design of the ship looks nice, of course a little generic, but still sweat looking)))) Reminds me a little bit of The Thing 2011.

The predators have a grudge against Earth because two of their own died on a hunt? I'm baffled. Isn't that just part and parcel of hunting, and their respect for worthy opponents/prey, sometimes you're defeated and die in honor and that's just how it is? It better just be one faction doing this, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it.

The whole point of the movie is to showcase the Upgrade's strength. The tagline of the movie is "The Hunt has evolved", so why would they let the old version beat out the new model once it's introduced?

so i am a bit confused right now.  The predators are mad that humans bested two of their own.  So in the movie Predator was the first time a human beat a predator?

So yeah... I don't care for this one bit. Isn't the whole point of the hunt to be challenging? If you try to hunt challenging prey that's worthy of your time, there is, you know, the risk of dying. So why would they be pissed? And why would be Predator in the 2nd Movie even reward Harrigan, if killing their champions is some sort of affront?

Yeah, but the first Predator literally busted a cheap move and tried to blow everything up because he lost. I get the feeling these Predators don't exactly play by their own rules which have never been laid out clearly anyways.

That was a long time ago. If they keep getting jobbed by what must surely be considered an inferior race, I can see a stagnating honor-bound society developing schisms and factions on that issue. We can make assumptions but we know very little about Predator culture.

Yes, that was in the script I read - all that was said was, IIRC, 'artifacts from each film'. That's not explicit IMO, just a small nod. I'm fine with it. Explicit would be actually discussing it onscreen or it figuring into plot.

I hate AVP with a passion, but I would assume when Lex returned to civilization the spear was confiscated by authorities. They managed to shut Dutch up too, and probably Harrigan as well.

People: The general public's only major frame of reference for the Predator is those two movies. They consider the Predators in those movies to be cool, badass iconic monsters of cinema (as do I). Of course he is referring to those Predators. Nobody in this movie is going to start referencing AVP, Predators or Dark Horse Comics.

I think people are upset because he said some of the Predators back on their planet are upset because two champions got beat. Well it's probably the same faction that he says are not opposed to upgrading themselves to be stronger hunters. Like I said before, Jungle Hunter literally got mad that he lost and decided to blow everything up. I'd bet he would've been one of those hunters upgrading himself if he had won.

I mentioned earlier that it's possible they could be referring to the two friendlies that were removed from the original script after the reshoots. Maybe the final film will still make reference to them, but not exactly "show" them. Or it's likely that they indeed are referring to CH and JH, even though they didn't come across as "the best". I think they said the evidence came from one of the clips. But that's kind of important news - I feel like someone would have tweeted about it if it was that obvious  :-\ If it is true, it looks like they're going the Bg Mama route and keeping the males and females somewhat similar in appearance. (Even though I continue to have a sneaking suspicion the Fugitive would be female, I'm still not completely satisfied given the lack of evidence in the article.)

Yeah, I'm assuming Fugitive is male, but it wouldn't shock me if "he" turned out to be a "she." Based on how the clips have been described, I can't think of anything in them that would indicate a female reveal, other than a) someone making assumptions based on the armor shape, as has been discussed here, or b) someone using a she pronoun to refer to the pred.

It's also pluralised.

"The will will introduce female Predators".

Could it be there's more to it and we get another ship scene like in P2? Might explain the extensive re-shoots.

Or is it more likely that it'll just be Treager/Keyes alluding to the fact that they've had/seen two genders of the species?

As there'd have to be a visual cue for the audience and, sadly, I think that'd be breasts. It's just the more obvious choice for cinema.

Idk, it's kind of specific...

Spoiler
"According to live coverage of the panel by CBR, one of the clips screened featured Olivia Munn's character, Dr. Casey Bracket, about to be attacked by a female Predator in sleek, technical armor, when a larger Predator attacks another one of the aliens, distracting the female Predator."
[close]

In any event, looks like there's more then the two we thought we were left with.

Doesn't sound like anything the other sites were describing. Unless it's edited confusing enough to where people think there are two Predators. Nobody else has said anything about two aliens, other than Fugitive and Upgrade.

But yeah, you're right. Sounds like there's more than one pred here.

Could the article just be wording it weird? I thought it was just down to Captured and the Upgrade. Captured's armor is sleek as mentioned in the article. Then again it looks like the Upgrade lands a huge ship to only be housing itself (though they did cut out the spider creatures).

If it's the captured predator then I wonder if I was right about Casey being the one to point it out that he's a she (since SKB refers to Captured as a male in the trailer).

I'm not crazy hearing that the Predators are butt hurt because people keep besting them.  They know the risks and it doesn't add up with how things play out at the end of P2. Though maybe it's just a certain group of them like some of you mentioned.

Yes, I'm with you there.  Very irresponsible reporting, if that's the case.  I'm not going to believe it until we get real confirmation, because I'd think we would know for sure by now if that was the case.  That'd be kind of big news, just like it'd be big if there were actually three instead of the two we thought were left after the cuts  ???  Utterly wacky indeed.

While everyone is talking about the footage, no one has really commented on the poster. I dig it! It's cool, but also disturbing, but in a good way! The Predator is obviously a cool and badass movie villain, but a lot what it does, especially taking skulls for trophies is sick and horrible and creepy, and the poster really captures that

Too sterile, it looks like the AVP ship with a little rust on it, i dont like it, the same applies to the Predator.

Who wrote the description of the first scene? That was VERY confusing to understand, also i am sick of "witty" dialogue, but whatever. The poster is really cool, all of the poster have been nice so far. And i really really do hope we some day get a GOOD avp movie, sounds like it could be in the works.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/predator-stars-sterling-k-brown-keegan-michael-key-reveal-arnold-schwarzenegger-impressions-at-comic-1128617

QuoteThe dueling impressions began after the cast discussed doing impressions of YouTube videos on sets, at which point host Conan O'Brien remarked that he was surprised they weren't all trying their hand at Schwarzenegger's classic line, "Get to the chopper!"

"That line is in there," multiple members of the cast said at once, referring to the upcoming film. "The line is in the movie and we're mercilessly doing impressions all the time," star Keegan-Michael Key added, before doing his own rendition of the classic line.

God damn reused dialogue!!  >:(

QuoteBlack elaborated, "What we strove for was a predator that's been bred as an assassin, so he incorporates traits from other species. So this one opens off his mouth really big and bites off your head."

Doesn't sound like too much of interest came out of Conan.

Nothing really in this one either. Some compliments about Prince's performance as Fugitive -

QuoteIn an exclusive interview with Rhodes during San Diego Comic-Con 2018, Screen Rant discovered that the combination of Prince and the Predator prosthetics turned out to be a success. Rhodes explained that he not only appreciated and respected the craft of his fellow co-stars during what he described as "a long shoot," but also the technical accomplishment that Prince brought to the movie. He said:

"We were there for awhile. It was a long shoot. To have that with guys that you appreciate and respect their artistry and their craft and then you see them come into the person and be the person. And then we have a practical Predator! (...) Brian Prince, he's 6'10 (...) does parkour. It's perfect. The whole experience was just unparalleled."

https://www.wired.com/story/comic-con-predator-panel/?mbid=social_fb

QuoteYet the biggest skill on display was Jane's foot-free lifestyle (the actor explained that he spent years in a shoeless society, and was kicked out after wearing shoes to a restaurant). It was a moment that made everyone in the room think: Are you for real? "As a black man who has fought really hard to get good tennis shoes," said Sterling, "and to have good coverage on both of his feet. I'm like, this is a white man who's just like, 'My feet are tough enough.'" Whether they're tough enough to help The Predator crew outrun the enemy remains to be seen.

I gotta admit the more I learn about Thomas Jane personally, the more I find him intriguing!

https://www.cbr.com/predator-return-franchise-humor/

Interesting article on the humour in the original Predator

QuoteWith a cast of testosterone-fueled actors led by action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, 1987's Predator features humor that's mostly a product of its era. Escalating competitions of machismo pepper the entire first half of the film, from super-jacked handshakes to boastful one-liners, including Jesse "The Body" Ventura's character describing himself as "a goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus." The usual '80s action trope of the star dropping a pun or joke immediately before or after dispatching nameless foes is front and center. Interestingly, Black himself appears, early in his filmmaking career, as a supporting character who can't (by design) tell a joke to save his life, although though it never stops him from trying.

And when Schwarzenegger's Dutch finally comes face to unmasked-face with the titular alien hunter that's been pursuing him, it's built up as a scary encounter. However, Dutch undercuts the terror of the reveal by observing his extraterrestrial enemy is "one ugly motherf**ker."

In a way, that moment perfectly encapsulates what the entire film is about: a blend of action, science fiction and horror, but with liberal doses of humor. Predator makes the out-of-this-world premise more palatable by injecting it with a sense of fun. That's something most of the sequels and spinoffs miss out on.

UPDATE!

A more detailed descripton about the fight between Upgrade and Fugitive.
Spoiler
The Ultimate Predator slams the Predator into a parked car, immobilizing him. As the Predator lies there hurting, the Ultimate Predator rips off his victim's helmet and proceeds to literally punch his face in until shiny, green blood oozes out. The Ultimate Predator then rips his prey's head off, holding it aloft as the humans flee in the RV. Munn and Holbrook's characters watch all this through the RV window as they speed away and she wonders aloud about how the Predators are hunting each other now.

UPDATE #2

Okay, it seems that this gives a little more to it:
Spoiler
The second clip that played in Hall H was much more along the lines of the kind of action and style that fans are hoping for. Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, and Jacob Tremblay are hiding in what appears to be a school. There's the ominous stomping of a Predator coming towards them from outside, causing Holbrook and Munn to draw their guns. Suddenly, there's a Predator inside, grabbing Holbrook and slamming him up against a window by the throat. He struggles from a moment until suddenly, as we've seen in the NBA Finals spot for The Predator, he's grabbed by something much bigger through the window.
It's a Predator that is much taller and muscular than the masked, armored Predator who grabbed Holbrook. The big one throws him into the parking lot like a rag doll. The rest of the soldiers are waiting outside armed with guns, but this bigger Predator isn't concerned with these humans.
The smaller Predator tries to fight back, but his bladed gauntlets have no effect on this superior beast. He picks him up and slams him onto the roof of a station wagon. He's down for the count. But Mega Predator isn't done yet. After making a signature clicking growl that has a much deeper vocal register, he rips off his opponent's mask, punches his face, and finishes by tearing off his head, complete with spine attached. Green blood drips everywhere, and Shane Black says it will be even bloodier than what was shown here in Hall H.
The entire human crew makes a getaway in an RV and the Mega Predator looks on at them as they drive away. Olivia Munn wonders out loud, "They're hunting each other now?"

Still not a fan of the classic being easily killed off, hopefully it gets some good scenes and kills in the first half of the movie.

I'm liking the sound of the character dialogue exchange though, I'm fine with the movie being funny if it makes the characters more memorable and gives the movie some personality. Nothing worse than a movie where you don't give a shit about any of the characters.

They clearly want to push their new Super Predator as the main monster. "Look at what we created, just look what it can do to the old Predator......"

Maybe the Super Predator will be a decent monster and the movie will still be good but it's a little sad that the iconic original is being treated like this again, for the second time in a row.

The next 2 movies (if they make them) better have the classic Pred's kicking the Super's ass big time.

Yeah, even in the end of Jurassic World the when they showed the T-Rex roaring over the remains of the park, they wanted to say with that scene that even if there is Indominus and any other dinosaurs, T-Rex is the king of them.
Here in The Predator there should be a scene like this...but won't be. :S

I'm confused about the marketing. Captive is front and center in the trailers and promo stills, and then they flat out show his death at comic con? I feel like it's trying to get people hype for Upgrade, but I'm just bitter...  :D
Damn right, marketing the shit out of classic just to have him get f**ked. How could this be a fan pleaser? I don't understand.

I don't really understand why they showed the Fugitive getting killed at Comic Con, seems like a very major spoiler. Maybe there's something they're holding back.

Pretty sure there's gonna be several Predators with that design, like a clan (?).  and if I was to guess, Captured is still in the labs at this point in the movie, and only escapes after the other Predator(s) die(s)

While we know now that there are no female Predators why CBR run with that... That still doesn't explain they clearly describing two Predators besides Upgrade in the scene

Yeah i unfortunatly spoiled that for myself. Hoping there are other preds in the film.

Upgrade is cool and all but I really prefer practical predators like fugitive.

That's what I was hoping for as well, but it looks like the CBR article is totally unreliable and we truly are just down to two.

Spoiler
Only to have the first one get his face unceremoniously pummeled in by the big guy.

All this classic versus upgrade, and having classic win because he's the "classic" is as about as lame as the crap they continue to do with the T-Rex in the Jurassic Park movies to appease the fans. Its horrible story telling and pandering at best. Dont get me wrong, the super predator beating the classic one just to push it as the new baddie, is stupid too. But at least its not eye rolling trex breaking through a spinosaurus skeleton lame. Easily one of the most garbage moments in the Jurassic World movie.

It's not that the classic Pred dies, they die in all the movies, but it's how he dies.

Predator's are super strong, great warriors and skilled hunters, but they have made them look weak and useless in 2 movies now, that's the issue.

I'd be totally fine with the Upgrade killing the classic if it was a hard fought fight, with the classic holding his own for a while, instead of one hit and dead, like a little bitch.

Ah I think I've got it now, somebody probably said Classic went down like a bitch and CBR took that as to mean female. Still how this scenario is any different from Predators is mind boggling. I didn't like the super predator idea at all. Does anyone here welcome it for the second time?

It's a different concept than the one in predators, so yes.

What if Jungle Hunter survived the explosion from the first film and being dishonored and all made him working on upgrades since then?

Seriously though, having Upgrade in this film isn't bad or far fetched. What bothers me most Fugitive getting killed so easily it would undermine everything about regular predators. I hope Black has a few more tricks up his sleeve. Overall I've been positive about this movie since the beginning but there are too many angles and dangerous territories that could mess everything.

I'm going to give all the similarities a pass. No point in arguing over how much of this movie seems to resemble Predators because it could all be a misdirection by Shane Black.

I mean if we just imaging that Mike Tyson who didn't use Doping, and put him against Mike Tyson that would use Doping, i think we would know the end of the fight, and it wouldn't be a long fight))))

Somehow they have the impression lately that the more the trailer shows twists and surprises, the more people will come to see the film. This is backed by statistics. Problem is, more people start showing up because the franchises gain momentum, not because of epic spoiling trailers...

I agree though, like BvS spoiled Doomsday a month before release, Predator spoils the upgrade/assassin...

This whole thing is just flawed. If I'm not scared anymore of the original Predator, why would I be scared of Upgrade? Ok, it's bigger, it's tougher, that just means we need a bigger log to kill it. The entire Movie will still end with people finding a way to outsmart it, because it's technologically and physically superior to us.

But isn't it how the media works, I mean Terminator 2 had T 1000, Aliens had Queen, ecery new adventure of the franchise needs to create new unthinkable chalange for the characters and viewer(it's in every media, cartoon tv shows, anime, manga, comics, ). Now is the Big Upgraded Predator the best decision, nope for me, but it folllows the rules of all franchises.

Except you didn't deal with a bigger and tougher Terminator in Terminator 2. The T-1000 and T-800 were still equally matched for the most part. It was just because of the T-1000's unique body, that you could never really put it down for the count for too long, as it would heal from every injury. And of course, over time, it would gain the upper hand against the T-800.

And the Alien Queen in Aliens was just a natural progression of the species. The Facehuggers hatched from eggs. So the question was, who laid the eggs? And the Queen wasn't even the focus of the Movie, as Ripley and the Marines dealt with regular Aliens, for most of the Movie. The Queen only came into play towards the end of the Movie and it didn't make the regular Aliens obsolete.

In The Predator, the regular Predator is apparently getting b**ch slapped around, before getting its head torn off, in a very one sided battle.

Sir I am on your side with Upgrade thing. It's just people asking why why why they needed biggere and badder version of the predator. I am just answering that it's part of the game. It's part of movie, cartoon, comics, anime etc. franchises. To creat bigger and badder chalanges. Thats it. Now T 1000 was not bigger, but much badder version, T 800 said that he would be destroyd by T 1000. Alien Queen was partly for exploration reasons, but still I think they used her as a tool to create bigger and badder version of the Alien. So my point is every new instalment needs to create something new, and usually it goes for bigger and badder, thats it.

Now again they could have go different way with this idea and not bitch slap the classic predator, but it's another topic  ;)

I actually do like the idea of giving the Predator more texture though, the Predator's body was always a little too humanoid below the neck for my tastes. Something like the Genophage would work well for BTS on the Predator's psychology.

But I prefer revealing more about a monster to make it more intimidating, reveals that aren't societal mind you.
More along the lines of the progression of discovering the nature of the Alien, Alex Garland's Annihilation or
John Carpenter's The Thing for instance.

Me also. But I would not care about the chitin skinarmor, if it was not plasma-proof.
I think they f**ked it with that.
Be it bullet-proof, that's okay, but the plasma should break it through.
Title: Re: The Predator @ Comic-Con
Post by: Still Collating... on Jul 21, 2018, 06:39:25 PM
Exactly, the plasma-proof skin is so stupid as well as Fugitive not giving a better fight. I have no problem with the idea of the upgrade, but the way they're showing him is to me just a sign of bad writing...

I'll swallow the plasma-proof part because Fugitive has such a mall plasma caster, so maybe it ain't a very powerful one? Still a bad idea.
How do we make this new predator more badass? Make him bigger and buffer! What else can we do? Make him bullet/plasma-proof! What kind of armor will he use? No, he doesn't need armor, his skin will be bullet/plasma-proof!
I mean really, they were smart enough to not make Berserker bullet-proof. This really is stepping on the line of being ridiculous...

To me, the predator was always cool because of his unique combination of hunting culture and interesting technology and armor design. Now, he's Hulk with mandibles, the Upgrade looks a lot more generic, just another big monster. I still do like the design, though a lot less than the other predators.

I have no problem with Upgrade being superior than other preds now. It does make sense to me that some preds would juice up because their egos got hurt. But the way things are getting handled is what worries me. I have 2 problems with how they handled the fight between Upgrade and Fugitive:
1. It is a bit disrespectful to the classic preds if you don't give Fugitive even a chance, just sounds like poor writing.
2. They miss an opportunity for a great fight scene.

I still hope this movie will be good. I mostly hope that they portray Upgrade as an intelligent character and not just as another mindless beast. If they do that, I'm on board with everything else.

I'm  sad they decided to ditch something as  iconic as Predator mask.  We all know they can breathe Earth air, but it was indicated that it was for limited period of time. Besides Upgrade would look much better design wise if he had some gear on him. More Predator less Hulk.

I still dont understand why he doesnt wear any armour, they said he doesnt need it, but armour plus bullet proof skin are better than just bullet proof skin, and it will look better, put also a mask, predator had different vision modes, he cant have all that vision modes with just eyes, they were effective because they can filter what they see.
It would feel more upgrade and less generic cgi moster

I think from the artistic point they tried to make as much contrast as they can with these predators. I mean the captured one has the full armor almoust covering whole his body and it's slick and nice looking. But this Upgrade looks like the force of nature without any armor and mask. I think it's just for the contrast in story and visuals.

so the classic-ish predator gets f**ked by the cgi cartoon predator. fantastic they sure do know what the fans want

what exactly am i supposed to be hyped for in this movie? predators hybridizing? cringy shane black jokes? avp references? little kid using predator tech? everything about this reeks of a shitty resident evil movie. this movie has definitely earned the luke warm reception its gotten since the trailer.

Fans often want delusional and stupid stuff for their favorite franchises, sorry but studios are better off without listening to them too much.

Sounds like thats exactly what they did and took ideas from the worst fanfiction they could find, complete with deviantart tier OC predator who so much more "badass" than any other

Imagine how much worse it could have been with so called fans having their say in the final product though

Hah that's cute how excited he got over his action figure.

Regardless of how some people may feel about the concepts being explored in this movie, I think it's awesome hearing him say that they got to make a sequel that they wanted to see rather than a movie that is completely dictated by the studio.

If Shane Black hadn't wanted to make this in the first place, I'd say we'd likely be looking at the time gap between Predator 2 and Predators again.

I hope that's the case  :) If so, it's very reassuring that he is getting to make the movie exactly how he wanted it, and not FOX strong-arming him into changing its direction.

Well maybe some of the test screenings forced them to change some things, but I think the studio was willing and eager to give someone like Black the chance to try and reignite the series.  :)

Well, I get the impression that the incorporating of human DNA into the Predators is more of a recent thing - that it may not have been going on for very long.  I wouldn't think that the Upgrade would be a perfect product of human features, with human eyes + human vision, not yet anyway.

That was a mistake in P2, don't remember if in the extras they admit that. But in AVP-R and Predators and they the same vision from first movie.

The Upgrade having that would only give benefits if he is hunting on Earth, in other planets it might make things worse.

True.  It makes me wonder if the way in which they "upgrade" themselves is dependent on the planet where they spend the most time.  Like, they tweak themselves for their favorite hunting planets.

Considering how big the Upgrade have gotten I find it hard to believe his goal was to hunt on Earth, what's the challenge now? He is even more overpowered against humans than he already was before. If an "upgrade" was necessary so they could have chance against a much superior prey, that they really were getting their asses kicked for years and couldn't beat I would understand.

But becoming a 10 feet tall monster with better eyesight just so you can bitchslap humans easier just isn't what I would expect from a Predator.

Re :The Upgrade.

Spoiler

From the way some of the dialogue has been changed and the way some of the promotional stuff is going, I think they've moved away from it being human-centric. It sounds more like Upgrade has been going around the galaxy picking out the best, and NOW he is on Earth. Not that he has yet taken in human-roid juice. That's the impression i'm getting from the last trailer and some of the press stuff. It seems like they changed it from emphasizing "human" to "lot's of species."
