The movie's storyline and setting may be divisive, but this particular re-edit of it is terrific!
Alien 3: Third Cut is a satisfying mixture of the 'Theatrical' and 'The Assembly Cut' with some added spit and polish, making it the best version I've come across.I've always preferred the notion of the alien being born from a rottweiler as opposed to an ox, and the 'dog-burster' scenes are much more compelling I reckon. But it's the likes of 15MaF's re-grading and enhancements along the way which really make this a comprehensive 'special edition' for me, with an improved look to the alien shots overall, especially during the iconic moment in the infirmary when it goes right up to Ripley's face - I included the shot above so that it's possible to see the added drool as it moves towards Ripley, which now ties in much better when we cut to the drooling alien head prop close-up. It should enlarge a little if you click on it - the re-grading, enhancements, and re-framing done to this somewhat dodgy effects shot all combine to make it far more effective now. In fact all the other 'puppet' shots of the alien are improved with a bit of re-grading now.
And extra kudos for the way the various EEV shots have been melded together nicely, with the creepy shot of Newt incorporated too. Some neat subtle enhancements to tie things seamlessly together there.
Ripley's fall from the finale of 'The Assembly Cut' is enhanced a bit too, so that we see her disintegrate a little before she disappears.
All in all, this is the definitive version of the movie for me now. ;D
Intriguing, where can we see it?
PM OP.
How was it?
I received no PM.

Did you watch it?
I'm waiting on an email. I'll inform you if I ever receive a reply.
I look forward to you covering it in your next report.
I've been distracted since my original post about this, but it's good to see that The Old One has 'spoiler' linked to 15MaF's full edit descriptions, as I was intending to link to those exact same descriptions which I came across at a different site.
Unfortunately, the link I found to the edit itself expired just after I posted about this great version. But the good news is that I should be able to locate another working link shortly. I'll post here again when do, and will certainly pass it on to those that have already messaged me for it, and anyone else who wishes to have it..
Sweet
I'd advise updating your original post when you do BringbackJonesy! I'll host it if it's good enough on my Google Drive for the foreseeable future so if the link goes down, just PM my profile on AVPG.
To all those that have posted here and those that sent me a message about this, I've now had a chance to PM all of you a working link. ;D
@ The Old One - As this link is NOT to be posted here or on any other site, anyone else who wishes to get it will need to ask here or PM me directly for it. But yeah, that would be good if you could store this edit in your own Google Drive folder for the foreseeable future as a backup, as I don't know how how many days this particular link will last, and may not be able to get another one. Enjoy.
Will do.

It's by no means definitive, but it's close.
One omission of a certain opening aspect and it's nearly perfect.
Sounds great actually, thanks for the heads up, i would like a link please, thank you.
I'm interested too. Can anyone PM me a link? Thanks.

Glad you liked it. Out of curiousity, what was the thing you'd like to omit at the beginning? Is it the 'egg' by any chance....?
@ D88M and Samhain13 - check your messages.
Yes.
PM please. Pleeeeease!
Quote from: The Old One on Jul 15, 2019, 06:22:09 PM
Yes.
I'm content to have the 'mystery egg'
(at a strange downwards angle!) shot included, as I prefer to look on the various visual inconsistencies seen in the opening credits as pointing to a 'cryo-nightmare', rather than actual events following ALIENS....and the 'egg' definitely adds to that for me. ;D
And that goes doubly for the ALIEN RES follow-up. That way I can enjoy a re-watch of them both for the aspects I like without tearing my hair out at the way things went.
@ Darwinsgirl and Kradan - check your messages.
Only, Aliens and Alien³ are the actual events following Alien, and the dreamlike qualities only point to the opening itself being Ripley's hazy interpretation of the fire before the crash. Just as Ripley's Chestburster nightmare is a representation of the PTSD Ripley acquired, whilst simultaneously informing the audience of the length of time passed since the events of Alien.
But removing the Egg as removing the Amanda Ripley subplot doesn't hinder audience interpretation, and only improves the film overall. The idea that the entire film is a cryo-nightmare though, is plain nonsense.
Alien³ or Aliens.
I agree, it's omission definitely enhances the viewing experience for me, and I see Resurrection as a completely separate entity anyway from the first three films.
Quote from: Erik Lehnsherr on Jul 16, 2019, 11:24:45 AM
The idea that the entire film is a cryo-nightmare though, is plain nonsense.
At the end of the day, it's just my own 'personal interpretation' of how I choose to view both ALIENS sequels, as a way to make them more of a fun re-watch for myself every now and then, without having ALL the main characters killed off along the way.
But there's certainly aspects of ALIEN 3 which I've really grown to appreciate over the years, especially in 15MaF's particular re-edit.
And while there's nothing within the narrative of the movie which conclusively makes the whole thing a cryo-chamber 'nightmare', I just find it impossible to look on it as an actual continuation of ALIENS due to ONE particular thing....no, not the 'mystery egg'....nor the white 'Sulaco' lettering....nor the different 'Newt' actress
(which isn't a problem for me, to be honest)....but due to the completely re-designed 'cryo-chambers' themselves, compared to those where we last left 'Ripley & Co.' asleep. That's the real sticking point for me ultimately in the continuity stakes, and one I'm content not to let slide.
That, and the fact that I intend to ALTER the narrative of ALIEN 3 and ALIEN RES for my own re-watch purposes eventually, to confirm that both movies are definitely cryo-sleep 'nightmares' right from the off, plain nonsense or not. ;D
Quote from: BringbackJonesy! on Jul 16, 2019, 09:23:05 PMbut due to the completely re-designed 'cryo-chambers' themselves, compared to those where we last left 'Ripley & Co.' asleep. That's the real sticking point for me ultimately in the continuity stakes, and one I'm content not to let slide.
Agreed, indeed, sanctioned, ratified and approved.
@ Local Trouble - I've finally bitten on your linked topic.;D
It's a aesthetic change and nothing more, just as underneath the Narcissus.
Anything else is fanfiction.
What missing cryotube?
The cryotube is missing for
Alien Isolation, I think.

Agreed, as the 'cryo-nightmares' scenario is merely my own preferred 'fanfictional' way of looking at these 'official canon' continuations to ALIENS.
(and I use an alternative 'fanfictional' method to make the likes of PROM and AC work better for myself too, as described on page 205 of the 'Egg on Sulaco' thread) ;D
Alien* continuation.
Sorry to bump this but i finally watched it last night.
The movie is still kind of a mess, i have not seen the assembly cut mind you, but i feel like all the stuff added only slightly improves the movie, it gives a little more depth to everything but seems like all the issues it has are not solved by adding footage.
I think the theatrical cut is the best version, as flawed as it is. Maybe with some little stuff added from the other cut but overall it needs a better script.

No cut of this film fixes the problems. They were in the script all along.

You can't save this film's narrative. Even the writers took an angry, let's-just-finish-it energy to the writing process. I don't think people will get tired of looking at the film, though. It's a triumph of imagery and aesthetics. Just thinking about the story however gives me a headache. Go any deeper than the surface of things and incongruities pop up everywhere.

It's a triumph that something remotely watchable was achieved.
Why don't you deify it though?
I remember my Dad telling me how crap Alien 3 was, when I wanted to move onto it after I finally watched Aliens through completely. But ever since that first viewing, I've always enjoyed it. I just appreciated it even more knowing the troubled production. That history makes it even more impressive that there's something enjoyable within it.
I find that to be a bit of a cop out.
The end product is what it is and I dig it in spite of the many problems; but I don't pretend it's some masterpiece.
But then I think Star Trek V is under-rated too (and that also had a stack of production problems).
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece either. There's a helluva lot of good in Alien 3. Thomson and Fincher's style (I certainly emulated Thomson a lot in college), Goldenthal's score is my favourite, Weaver is fantastic in that film, so are most of the cast who get put in front of the camera to speak, creature design, etc, that film just doesn't stand up to either of the first two on an objective level. But I'd never call it bad.
It's been a long time since I saw FF, but I remember it being one of the ones I just don't have interest in revisiting when I'm in a Trek mood (which to be fair, is a lot of the time).
I stumbled across all the Trek flicks on a local streaming service and have been watching them in sequence. Final Frontier still has the best Kirk/ Spock/ McCoy dynamic of any of the films. The premise is sound, there's just a lot of clunky stuff in it. "We can't go through the Great Barrier! We'll be destroyed! Oh... that was simple. Nevermind." Finding God - even a false one - should've posed more trials than Mr Scott smacking his head against a pipe.
Not sure if Goldenthal's soundtrack is my favourite, but it's certainly brilliant.
Do you mean Stan? I've been meaning to catch up on them.
Umm excuse me?

Yep.
I wanna watch this edit/cut so bad as A3 is my favorite Alien movie next to ALIEN. According to me the rest of the Alien series don't even compare to these two movies.
A3 has by faaaar the best score and soundtrack out of all the Alien movies (Prometheus included); the aesthetics, shots, light and angles are exquisite and the acting is stellar while the dialogue is definitely at or above par (despite the overuse of the F-word) and I'd say that A3 has some of the most touching/emotional scenes, with Sigorney Weaver's acting being greater than ever. The symbolisms, the concepts etc. together with the brutal yet poetic and tormented cathartic tone just makes A3 an amazing movie despite its severely troubled production.
Sure, the creature effects and special effects are at times quite iffy to say the least (as in bad), and there are a few glaring plot holes that definitely can ruin it for you if you choose to focus on them (such as the Sulaco Egg, or whether the Alien originated from Spike or an ox etc.) - I'm not going to deny that - but claiming that A3 is a hopeless mess with no prospects of redemption is pure and utter BS.
A3 is aging like fine wine (...with bits of cork in bottle).
And snip. I'm sick to death of people picking at each other. You aren't always going to like each, other peoples opinions, or their personalities or etc. But this is supposed to be somewhere to come and escape the crap of the real world. Please just act with some modicum of respect. When you start doing stuff like this, it makes it not an escape for me, and it's really tiring.

Hello

Thanks v much
Downloaded no problem
Does not want to play on windows media player or some other apps like vimu (i use this on the firestick via a media server) however VLC plays it no problem
Out of interest anyone had issues with playback?
Personally, I downloaded the VLC media player onto my laptop, as it seems to play most files with no problems.
However, I much prefer to watch an edit like this on my tv as I previously said, so once I've downloaded a file link onto my laptop's harddrive, I then normally copy the file onto either a usb external harddrive or a small usb 'flash drive' stick so that I can then put it into my tv's usb port to watch.
Note - while any size of usb external harddrive plays fine on my tv, not any size of usb 'flash drive' stick works on it....so I normally use a 32 Gb size usb 'flash drive' stick to copy files like this onto to watch, as a 64 Gb sized one does NOT work on my tv for some reason.
And just to clarify, I've had no playback issues with that file link whatsoever using any of the options I've mentioned.
I'm interested too. Can you send PM me please? :)

I didn't like what I've read from the "Assembly Cut" and am very interested in this cut instead (The Runner/Dragon absorbing dog DNA to incorporate canine predator characteristics was one of the best parts of Alien 3 regarding the nature of the Xenomorph and the Assembly Cut ruins it by replacing it with the bull host). I'm also a proponent of "less is more" when it comes to fan edits like this and this one seems to follow that rule.

Interesting. I always thought it should be the case and selling point for another collection re-release. I'd like to give it a try. I kindly ask for link. Thanks.
The only two things id like to see adjusted from the assembly cut is to reinsert the dogburster and replace the moment where Ripley falls with the theatrical version, only the point in which she actually jumps as I've always preferred the slower build-up with a bit more Lance Henriksen. That be my perfect version, aw and maybe clean up some of the sound/visuals.

Can't say I'm a big fan, parts near the beginning I find interesting, the playing with expectation does work. But in terms of actual improvement on the Special Edition beyond that? Nothing notable in my honest opinion. It's not even an improvement on the visual level like this video :
https://youtu.be/aI5x8ybJZxM
In fact this might even be a step down opting for the Dog instead of the Ox host (that's undoubtedly more in tune with what the film's saying) and instead of taking out or altering parts that come across as mostly unnecessary, this version adds on nearly everything it can.
Although I can understand the logic behind much of the decisions taken, a lot of rather obvious things that surely make a net positive change stay bafflingly identical, for example: For the opening no shots of inexplicable Egg(s) or Facehugger(s), up until the abattoir, no Murphy asking about a thing we never see, putting us on the same page as Ripley, and then we get filled in about what happened exactly by Bishop as our protagonist does. Perhaps also concealing the fact the cryotubes appear different from Aliens to Alien³ until we see them slide from the Sulaco into the EEV. No redundant Arthur and Troy checking through batteries. No redundant "Let's make it to the furnace." No "I think I've found Vincent!" And change Lance Henriksen's Credit to: "Bishop & Michael Bishop"
I'm sorry but it doesn't come close to the potential lurking within.

In fact this might even be a step down opting for the Dog instead of the Ox host (that's undoubtedly more in tune with what the film's saying) and instead of taking out or altering parts that come across as mostly unnecessary, this version adds on nearly everything it can.
@ Trash Queen - while it was interesting to see that person's regrade video of certain shots that you linked to in your post, I gotta say that I found 15MaF's regrading to make a big improvement on the 'rod puppet' shots compared to the official releases. They were awful in places before, and look much better in his version I'd confidently say.
Despite it's flashes of brilliance and a great soundtrack score, I was always sorely dissatisfied with elements of both the 'Theatrical cut' and 'Assembly cut' versions of the movie....and may not have really bothered with it again. But 15MaF's particular combination of both versions has turned ALIEN 3 into a must-watch again for me after ALIEN and ALIENS....especially as he included the 'rottweiler birth' which I always preferred.
And I'm actually glad that he didn't remove the likes of the 'mystery egg' during the opening credits, as it helps to retain the 'anomalies' which make it easier to look on it all as a 'cryosleep nightmare' that Ripley has on her safe trip home with Newt and co., if I'm inclined to do so! ;D
However, I'd also be interested to hear what others thought of it too, who have managed to watch this edit now.
Glad it maintains the shit parts? Yeah okay.
It's mostly just the Special Edition, with extra parts from the Theatrical Edition that make it even longer with no benefit, or nearly none anyway.
It's not so drastic an upgrade that it's worth telling people to seek it out over any official Blu-ray release.
If it changed things substantially, like my suggestions it might be, as it stands it's just not.
What can I tell you, except I find this re-edit a much more satisfying watch overall than either of the official releases.
But both those cuts will always be there for those that prefer them, so it's all's good for those that do.
Could someone who's seen it (and willing to) write a detailed review of it? Sound interesting

Lurking here since '99 but just wanted to say thanks to Trash Queen for posting! Much appreciated.
Is this fan edit still available?
@ SolidSnake58 - I'm gonna take a wild guess that you didn't read the last couple of posts. To be honest, that link wasn't meant to be posted directly anywhere, but I've sent you a PM with some additional tips.
Corridor Digital talks Alien³ and mentions A34K Project at around six minutes in here:
Not quite the right thread but, I will make an appropriate one when it finally releases.
