QuoteYou can now all download a new update for the game today, which also includes two new (and pretty awesome) Difficulty Modes - Nightmare and Novice.
Our news article has the full details here: http://bit.ly/1vK2yDt (http://bit.ly/1vK2yDt)
However, here's a quick the summary of the new difficulty Modes you can get stuck in to!
Nightmare - for those with a strong disposition and the urge to take their Alien: Isolation experience to the next level:
Broken Motion Tracker - a distorted signal with unreliable information
Reduced resources
Authentic flamethrower - fuel is rare to find and burns faster
Map systems are offline and hack systems are harder
Synthetics and survivors are more hostile
Alien AI has been upgraded to be more aggressive, adapting faster and affording no second chances to anyone
Novice - for those wanting a bit more breathing space:
More resources to be found, increasing survival chances
Synthetics and fellow survivors are less aggressive and easier to survive
Alien is less menacing, less aggressive and easier to distract
You'll be able to get the new update for your platforms now.

F**k yeah, nightmare sounds awesome! ;D
Lovely. Hopefully there will be difficulty based achivements to unlock. I found hard mode to be difficult enough. My body isn't ready for this new definition of pain and suffering.
Oh that's awesome! Anyone know if any new achievements added for nightmare mode? Or is it possible to unlock existing achievements on novice?
Sod that had kittens on normal lol
Awesome! Something to do when I'm in my 60's. :D
Ugh. If they have trophies for Nightmare mode, I have to go back to Sevastopol.
Haha. If IGN plays it on Nightmare, it gets a 3.0 because it's too difficult. ;D
Oh, man... Nightmare mode is for the masochist inside of all of is! No ammo counter and less flamethrower fuel... Good Gods! 'Suck flames you Alien freak!' *sputter* 'Oh fu-'
Ok, just got home from work and launched the game... No update... Am I missing something? This update went out today, right?
Nightmare difficulty sounds like it'll be artificially difficult in the sense that it'll be extremely cheap. Love to hear how it actually plays out in-game though
I would like nightmare more if they made the alien silent instead of an elephant. Never had to use the motion tracker playing the game for the first time... On hard.
Played a few hours of Nightmare difficulty from the start of the game. I'm about six missions in I think and really the only noticeable spike in difficulty is the lack of items. Many corpses don't seem to have anything on them and only 1 in 10-12 boxes will have any supplies, which has made me very picky about crafting. Getting shot twice will put you down. Haven't been attacked by any androids yet. I'm actually getting pretty decent at sneaking. Didn't get killed at all in the medical area. Was actually able to trap a couple of droids in a small room, which was pretty funny.

One thing I have noticed is behaviors or scripted bits with the Alien that I've never seen before. Might just be that I never noticed them before. Examples are
Spoiler
when going too android storage the group just before the storage area gets attacked. The alien grabs one of the guys and takes him into the vent. A similar thing occurs again once a little later.
Doubt any of that has to do with the update.
The Alien behavior seems about the same. I haven't used any crafted items, weapons or flares on him yet though.
Gotta say the hud-less view is my favorite part.

What system are you playing on? Did you have to do something specific to download the update? I still haven't recieved it yet! Wtf!

I 'm playing on Steam. The update occurred automatically for me via steam and the new difficulties were available when I started the game.
Hmm... Maybe I need to give it a couple days. I'm playing on xbox360. Maybe the update started rolling out today but won't hit the older systems till tomorrow or something. I can't wait to try out nightmare though... As twisted as that may be...
I have a PS3 and live in the US, never got an update notice when booting up the game. :(

Yeah, those bits were in the game before. I remember the first time I got to those parts - it took me a long time to build up the courage to advance, in case it was still hanging around!
As for those asking about new trophies/achievements, it's a free update so no extra awards.
It's a shame this wasn't out at launch (not a criticism) I don't think it would make a huge difference to my play style as I always managed to have maxed out items, a full tank of flame fuel and hardly shot anything throughout the game. I was a stealth ninja.

Yeah I played on Hard and other than running out of flame fuel a little bit towards the end, i pretty much had maxed out items for 90% of the game (I think I finished the game with maxed out items as well). I enjoy stealth games, so it suited my play style. I might give nightmare a go, but the lack of ammo counter is my main concern,
It is very much about understanding how to play the game. If you have the right mentality and the patience you can play the game without the frustration that seems to hit a lot of people.
Just gave Nightmare a run. Loving the atmosphere now, this is how Hardmode should have been, no HUD. The only thing I find that might be troublesome is the total removal of the minimap, even when you find those map boards its still blank, and you may need to recall your previous playthrough to navigate through some parts, or actively remember where the areas are. Its still an enjoyable experience for a second playthrough, with the Alien now even more actively hunting you and you only have what's on you for getting around. A lovely challenge.

Just because it's free doesn't mean achievements can't be added. I've had a couple of free updates in old halo games that included new achievements... But anyway, thanks for the info. Now all I need is for the update to APPEAR for me! Lol

Fair enough. Either way, this one doesn't :)
I still don't have this update... Is the xbox360 just really far behind on this?!?

Well why'd they announce that the update was released for all platforms? Am I the only one who never got the update? Or is this common for all xbox360 players? Wtf?!
The Xbox 360 Update is live now. About 902mb. Seem to be no additional fixes other than the inclusion of the two new difficulty settings.
I'm really happy they came out with Novice as well. Not to play it on a easier difficulty but to be able to explore more of Sevastopol. I really like how the game was made and I want to see more of it without constantly having to run away from enemies.
Yea I finally got the update... I'll stop griping now! :-)
I consider Novice to be the amateur level setting but I'm pleased it came out though, hopefully I'll have an even easier time now getting the "Don't Die Once" trophy. Once that's finished, the Nightmare level setting is going to be the one intriguing me. ;)
Managed to get to St. Cristabel medical without dying on nightmare mode. One hell of a tense experience. But jesus is the Alien relentless now, and the motion tracker is next to useless.
Managed to beat the game on Nightmare mode yesterday. For the most part it felt pretty similar to Hard difficulty, with the only major difference being the almost total lack of supplies given throughout the game. It was also pretty surprising how quickly flamethrower fuel could be used, but I never found myself running out. There also seemed to be a great amount of ethanol lying around, so I had plenty of Molotov cocktails on hand.
The only major difference I noticed with the Alien, besides the fact that second chances were taken out, was (I think) it could spot the light coming from the molotovs when I had them equipped. This could have been in my head though.
Had I gone from Medium to Nightmare I probably would have noticed a much greater change in difficulty, but currently Nightmare seems like a small step up from Hard.

He does that on hard as well, but I didn't notice if his response time to it is ramped up on nightmare or not. He'll also spot the light from the flamethrower. Pulling out one of those items when hiding under a table or something while he's around can be instant death. It's a pretty nice touch, I think.
