Title: Dark Horse Announces New Comic Series, Alien: The Original Screenplay!
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Jan 16, 2020, 08:06:38 PM

Following on from 2019’s adaptation of William Gibson’s second draft of Alien 3, Dark Horse has just announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that 2020 will see them adapting another unused Alien film script. However, it’s not going to be tackling another Alien 3 (sorry folk, no visualize of Eric Red’s take), Dark Horse are turning their sights back to the very start; back to Dan O’Bannon’s Alien – formerly known as Starbeast!

The adaptation of O’Bannon’s screenplay comes courtesy of Cristiano Seixas and Guilherme Balbi and follows in the footsteps of Dark Horse’s successful 2018 series, William Gibson’s Alien 3, which adapted the original screenplay for David Fincher’s third movie in the series, restoring material excised in the final version of the script.

Seixas and Balbi’s five-issue miniseries similarly follows O’Bannon’s original version of events, heavily rewritten by Walter Hill and David Giler before production, and is described simply by the publisher as “an alternate line of events.” Among the differences? In the very first version of the story, the spaceship isn’t the Nostromo but the Snark...

Cristiano Seixas has taken up scripting duties for Dark Horse’s newest adaptation and Guilherme Balbi will be providing the visuals. Seixas has not working within the Alien universe before, but Balbi has previously worked on the Predator side where he did the pencils for A Predatory Life, the prequel comic to Predators that focused on Royce. You can see some of his work for Alien: The Original Screenplay below!

The new series is due to make it’s debut on the 22nd of April, just days before 2020’s Alien Day! I’m not going to lie, I certainly wasn’t expecting this but I’m excited none-the-less!

Awesome. Was so hoping after the Alien3 comic they did more of this stuff.

Great to see.
Cover is incredible.
Inner panels colouring a bit too lollypop for my liking but perhaps that is deliberate to separate it from the Film tone and style. Anyway enough being negative as this is tremendous news.

Hopefully Cobb's. Curious which design style they take given the radical change that Giger brought in.

The pyramid temple hopefully make an appearance.

The pyramid as a work of a culture separated from Space Jockeys? Yes please.  8)

Since the panel sequence seems to have some Gigerish look, I guess they're going to make the best blend of both worlds. In fact I wonder what Derelict is going to look like. They're not required to follow any particular design, but I just wonder...

I'm certainly intrigued! But I'm not surprised that they're adapting more scripts as the Gibson A3 comics nearly sold twice as much as any of the other Aliens comics released last year. Very cool news nonetheless!

I will check it out for sure. But the alternate versions of things dont appeal to me all that much. The art looks fantastic though. Id like to see a series with aliens and something that is inspires fear and dread. Some scenes from the outbreak trilogy nailed it really well i think. A lot of the new comics feel to promethous and not alien(s).

It looks like a 1976 draft so it should be.  I like that they made Roby a black woman (assuming it's not Hunter).  I never would've picked that despite the 'unisex crew' script note.

Would've preferred something more old school and less flashy.

Sad O' Bannon isn't around anymore to see this.

Ideally I'd like to see all of them. Even the bad ones like Eric Red's, but I fear some of the reception Gibson's got might turn them off doing the not so polished stories.

I'd also love them do some random pitches or scripts that we might have never even heard of.

Very cool! I'm a big fan of seeing these alternate/original takes on stories, so this is great news that they're doing more along those lines.

As has already been said, I hope we get to see stuff inspired by some of that original concept art. Alien really did have some amazing 70's sci-fi artwork made during its production.

I really do want Ward's vision brought to light in some way. Although in truth I feel it'd have to be a comic book or something animated because of how fantastical his visuals are. I couldn't trust a simple movie to bring all that craziness to life without sacrifice the things that make it unique.

But on the topic for this -- is there a bullet point layout that can tell me what's to be expected in Bannon's original draft? Was this before they had a concept for our favorite creature?

I absolutely cannot wait for this.

In spite of its problems, i kinda love the Gibson Alien 3 adaptation we got and this is looking (albeit only 2 pages and a cover) great.

Now lets hope we get some more.

the three that i really would love are

Alien: Enginneers

Paradise

Blomkamp's Alien project.  I doubt this one will ever be made to be fair.

Yes.

It's the point, as far as I can tell, before Giler and Hill started re-writing.  So there's only six crew - Standard, Broussard, Roby, Hunter, Faust and Melkonis.  No Ash.

Here's O'Bannon own synopsis.

Spoiler
En route back to Earth from a far part of the galaxy, the crew of the
starship SNARK intercepts a transmission in an alien language,
originating from a nearby storm-shrouded planet.

Mankind has waited centuries to contact another form of intelligent
life in the universe -- they decide to land and investigate.  Their
search takes them to a wrecked alien spacecraft whose doors gape open
-- it is dead and abandoned.  Inside they find, among other strange
things, the skeleton of one of the unearthly space travellers.

Certain clues in the wrecked ship lead them across the hostile surface
of the planet to a primitive stone pyramid, the only remnant of a
vanished civilization.  Beneath this pyramid they find an ancient tomb
full of fantastic artifacts.  Lying dormant in the tomb are centuries-
old spores, which are triggered into life by the men's presence.  A
parasite emerges and fastens itself to one of the men's faces -- and
     cannot be removed.

An examination by the ship's medical computer reveals that the
creature has inserted a tube down his throat, which is depositing
something inside him.  Then it is discovered that the parasite's blood
is a horribly corrosive acid which eats through metal -- they dare not
     kill it on the ship.

Ultimately it is dislodged from its victim and ejected from the ship,
and they blast off from the Hell-planet.  However, before they can seal
themselves into suspended animation for the long voyage home, a
horrible little monster emerges from the victim's body -- it has been
growing in him, deposited there by the parasite... and now it is loose
     on the ship.

A series of ghastly adventures follow.  They trap it in an air shaft
and a man has to crawl down the shaft with a flamethrower -- it tears
a man's head off and runs away with his body -- a man is crushed in
the air lock door and the ship loses most of its air in a terrific
windstorm -- another man is burned to death and then eaten by the
creature -- and another is woven into a cocoon as part of the alien's
     bizarre life cycle.

Finally there is only one man left alive, alone on the ship with the
creature, and only six hours till his air runs out; which leads to a
climax of horrifying, explosive jeopardy, the outcome of which
determines who will reach Earth alive -- man or alien.

Not that I'm concerned about the posted image showing a page of the book and the talk about the military disintegrator "firing and shooting explosives by military presense" doesn't seem to reflect whats going on in the panel. It just looks like the interiors of the derelict ship that is semi-redesigned and with a hole(s) to represent something like what is in the script.
I'm interested more so in what we might get from the artist rather than a line by line adaptation of the script as that can be quite hard to do when you're developing a unique vision.

I thought the William Gibson script adaptation was not great, and with the other alternate scripts for the film being rather bad I don't feel the requirement for a further extension of that story, especially with the original Aliens series already existing. I'd much rather see Neill Blomkamp's Aliens II and the particularly good Vincent Ward's Alien III.

The actual idea of the wooden planet would be cool to see with the right artist. Shame we see so little of it on the page, though. And nobody could make the head burster look good, heh. They could also adapt scripts that never leaked out, like Ferguson's version with the Snow White ending.

Yeah, I sometimes wonder why people rate Ward's script so highly. The setting is cool and could be visually stunning, but once you stop to think about it it doesn't make a lick of sense. And beyond that and a couple of neat set pieces (the toilet, the wheat field) I thought the script was honestly pretty poor.

Like a lot of the rejected third film scripts, there was way too much unexplained WTF in it (the king, the headburster).

Having finally read the various Alien 3 shooting drafts fairly recently, I'm curious what he might've done. I don't really know anything about his unused contributions.

There's also the Twohy draft that supposedly had Ripley in it. Not sure how different that might've been.

I'd honestly rather have Vincent Ward's Alien 3 adaption. I just don't think original O'Bannon's script difers enough from what we ultimately got. It's good to see they keeping up with the concept though.

The basic story is the same - there's just more of it (eg. a ship and a pyramid).

It's certainly not completely different like Alien 3 and the Gibson script.

I really hope they use some of the early creature designs in this, because otherwise it does seem a little unnecessary to do what is basically just a slightly earlier draft of the exact same story - and I say that despite really looking forward to this one.

I'm really looking forward to the pyramid stuff.

Here is an idea everyone.

Either Alien: Engineers or Blomkamp's Aliens 2

Adapted by Tristan Jones.

I'm not sure Tristan Jones is very excited at the prospect of Neill Blomkamp's Aliens II, I've no idea on his feelings towards Vincent Ward's Alien III but I know he'd be ecstatic to work on Engineers.

My argument against an Engineers adaptation was that it wasn't different enough from the movie we ultimately got to make it seem worth it - but I guess that went out the window with the announcement of this one

So yeah, f*ck it, why not. I quite like that script.

I think Christmas did a great job adapting Gibson's second draft.  Like Hicks says, its what he was hired to do.

Would i change anything about it ?

Now that i have read it a few times and love the hardcover, i have grown to love it and would not change a thing.  there are a few unclear bits in there with regards to panel layouts and what not but i think that those issues actually go well with the unrefined feel of the second draft.

I find the whole package rather charming.

The fault for the lackluster script laid in Gibson but Christmas is guilty of giving us bland artwork, devoid of atmosphere and originality. This new comic at least appears to be well-designed and atmospheric. I'm hyped up about experiencing the Alien story using completely different visuals.

I disagree that the artwork was bland. The panels conveyed plenty of movement and the characters were quite expressive. The coloring was a bit too bright and a darker palette would've improved the atmosphere but Christmas wasn't responsible for the colors.

I've found far more enjoyment on a second visit to Christmas' adaptation after listening to the Dirk Magg's audio drama. It ironed out a few confusing parts in the graphic novel. I still would've liked one more issue to be honest as it did feel a tad rushed in that final one.

I'd like to see them collaborate with Gibson and create a sequel to his Alien 3 from scratch. That ending is just begging for a follow up.

Ya.  I'm open to the series going in a hundred different directions.  Pretty tired of the silly fight over people's differing opinions on the future of the series in terms of what's canon.  The best thing about the Aliens series is the idea that you don't know where the alien things come from or what they will lead to.  Once you know these things, the magic vanishes.  So take it in different directions I say.  Be brave about it, and abandon the idea of Canon.  That's for kids' films like Star Wars.  As long as any story paths are internally consistent then it's all good.

Publisher's summary would seem to indicate they will indeed be using alternate Alien designs.

QuoteAn all new Alien with an all new Alien!

En route to back to Earth, the crew of the starship Snark intercepts an alien transmission. Their investigation leads them to a desolate planetoid, a crashed alien spacecraft, and a pyramidic structure of unknown origin. Then the terror begins...

Also note the use of Snark for the ship.

Yeah, I really like the art, but it's not at all what I expected.

I'm really glad it's a bit less pedestrian than the Gibson adaptation.

Would've preferred something that looked more Ron Cobb.  Not that this is bad.

Doesn't sound like we're going to be seeing any previous explorations in either this or Predator. 100% completely new aesthetic take. Which is kinda cool, but honestly I'd have liked to have seen something more akin to the older concept art. But I'm excited.

I'm very pleased with that new aesthetic approach actually, and regret checking out the preview. I want to judge all of this fully in context.

We haven't seen the pyramid yet, but aye. It's a little odd. Also, Ron Cobb's ships are amazing. Still looking forward  8)

Just a random thought. Could it be some IP infringement issue in drawing (no pun) upon those old artwork concepts? Not that I could see how given Fox own the IP but maybe there was some legal ramifications about using conceptual artwork originally designated for a movie only in other future media???

I can't imagine so. Fox will own all the development work done on all the films.

Rights are highly segmented and compartmentalised, so it's actually possible in that Fox might not have granted them those particular rights, just the right to adapt the script.

I don't think it's the case, though.

That was my thinking. Worked on many digital and print projects with various illustrators where their work agreement has strict usage restrictions around where and what those illustrations can be used on and for certain lengths of time too.

I am ignorant of that. I just thought they were the owners of Ron Cobb's designs for Alien, in the same way they own Giger's designs for the Space Jockey & Derelict, with the exception of everything else, outside Alien, done by the artist.  :P

Most of the time the studio will own all work created for their IP, outright. I think what's being suggested is that Fox themselves put up the blocks on what they would allow an individual licensee to use from their archive. Like maybe they don't want to deplete the archival resource in one area when it might be more profitably exploited somewhere else.

There maybe further additional complications involved too. O'Bannon owned specific early work by Giger, since he paid for it.

Interesting design for the Alien one the cover of the collection.

Safe to assume that that is one of the covers for either issues 3,4 or 5.

Loving that its a hardcover.  Hopfully it's the same trim size as the Alien 3 Hardcover.

I'm kind of disappointed it's not Cobbs', even though I expected it. Still looks quite similar to the Alien, but still has something of a 70s kind of vibe I feel.

I'm buying this.  I'm actually trying to avoid owning a stack of comics, but I support this creative initiative.

What I am baffled about is how do comics get sold in the age of Coronavirus.  I don't know about other regions but here in Toronto, comic book stores are closed by law.  Some people don't think they're essential.

You can be certain that every title has been pushed back. So I don't think we will see any Alien or Predator related material until 27th at the earliest. If we are lucky, and that would be Alien: The Original Screenplay.

There is still a couple of weeks of other unreleased Dark Horse comics to come first.

Just finished reading the first issue. I still kind of think they should have gone for a pulpy kind of look to the artwork, but damn if I don't love the artwork regardless. Some Covenant vibes in the design of the Snark, and some interesting modern style in the character design, but since it's not actually made in the 70s, it works for me.

The colouring in particular I really do dig. I think this is one of Dark Horse's best looking comics.

O'Bannon's script always included the note that the roles were written unisex and could be played by whoever, although male pronouns were used throughout.

He was surprised they made the lead female, as he didn't expect it, but he wasn't against it.

Did anyone else catch the part where the planetoid has a diameter of 120km (1% of Earth) but a gravity of 86% of Earth? Was that pulled directly from the original script before any science advisors made their recommended edits? Even if it was solid metal, I don't think you'd close the gap on that one.

Admittedly blending more real-world thought than I should.

It's been discussed before.  I think in the ADF book they mention not to tell Brett and Parker the diameter because they would be out prospecting for heavy metals.

There is evidence of it being much bigger than originally put forth in Alien in the sequel.

Thanks for pointing that out. Yeah, it seems in the film and in ADF's novel the diameter is 1,200km (10x smaller than earth). Here in this comic it is another 10x smaller (120km).

It could have a highly dense core to give it the mass required for that level of gravity.

Oh man, everyone hears the 2 hour day thing and instantly glosses it over. It's been there since 1979 and every time we all just scratch it right out of our brains and let it disappear faster than that Borg baby from Voyager. If the skies were ever clear, you'd be able to see a sunrise and sunset in the span of 60 mins, give or take, depending on the season. So I guess the aliens were mostly clocking off and then right back in, one hour on, one hour off; mostly.
I'm not sure if that makes them lazy or overworked, but either way, I can see why they'd be cranky.

And what the hell did calendars on Hadley's Hope look like?

Three-hundred-sixty days hath September,
April, June, and November,
All the rest have three-hundred-seventy-two,
But February's three-hundred-thirty-six,
The LEAP YEAR, which comes once in four,
Gives February twelve days more!

Maybe waiting 17 days for a rescue ship wasn't really as bad as it sounds.

But the difference is, if I'm recollecting correctly, with Hunters and Thicker than Blood, the remaining individual issues were canceled post Covid19 shutdown. Based on economic and license issues, it all stopped. That's much different than starting a comic series post shutdown with the no intention to release the final issue (if that indeed is what happens.)

It's not that different really. Why could DH not have released the last 2 issues for the other two series between now and Dec.

If Dark Horse can sell the Trades for the other two series  they should have finished releasing those issues first seen as they were 50% released. Especially if they can bang out a 5 issue series before then that started releasing after the Shutdown.

Based on that. It's the same to me. That's why I wouldn't put it past them.

Although....... I think I can agree that it is a bit Shadier to release 4 issues of the series, knowing that they would not finish it, to bump up trade sales.

Meaning the cancelations can be excused due to the market. Economies have dipped. Comic Shops have closed since Covid19.  Less people are walking into any retail stores with health fears where a lionshare individual comic sales occur (unlike trades transactions where a majority occur online).  And printer's schedules were backed up. You make market decisions and Predator and AvP are not big sellers. I get all that. Who can fault them for that. But starting an Alien individual comic series after the shutdown with no intention to finish it, you can fault them for it.

But watch Dark Horse release the final issue in December and we don't even need to have this conversation.   :)

Agreed. As per my modified post.

And yeah, I can also see the releasing it alongside the HC. Singles for Dec have not been solicited for yet where as collections always get advanced solicits.

Just to poke the fire a bit more though. They could have released those other issues (cancelled ones) digital only.

Happened with Gears of War: Hivebusters. The issues got massively delayed, and only released digitally I think, for awhile. Then the TPB got released as the final issue came out, I believe.
It also, for a time, was scheduled to be released before the final issue.

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think they mean literally traced, but a lot of the aesthetics fit far better in the prequel trilogy's world than the main series'. Just look at the EVA suits the crew wear.

I'm kind of liking this at the moment though, the different takes on the designs and such lead me to wonder what other differences exist in this world from what we know...

What are y'all calling all the expies? The new "Facehugger" seems more like a "Headwrapper" to me.

Tracing is not necessarily bad, if done from original sources, e.g. from photos you shot yourself. To me it always look worse than pure drawing but it's a method to save time.

I'm sure if you try hard enough you'll find examples of tracing in any artist's artwork. The problem is that Land seemingly cannot do artwork without tracing

Yeah I agree

But Greg Land has nothing to do with this series and I see no obvious examples of tracing in the art in the first issue. Just not sure why its being brought up as a thing in this thread other than its a hot topic.

That colour work is some of my favourite. I just love some of those silhouette shots when they're approaching the pyramid. Definitely more prequel influence. Looks like they use the Engineer alphabet in the pyramid and the auto-doc looks like the table when they're checking out the Engineer skull in Prometheus.

The Chestburster sequence would be my only grip. In principle there is nothing to fault other than expectation, but it would have been nice if it was more focused.

Liked the ending and where it leaves us for the beginning of issue 4. Always wanted to see the food locker sequence with the traditional Alien.

I find the uninspired creature design to be puzzling.

You have this amazing opportunity to illustrate the awesome story of Alien,
but with a brand new look, and most creatures so far have just been tentacle blobs.

I thought it would be obvious the hire an illustrator that is really into creature design and such, (I admit there is more to Alien than that) such as a bernie Wrightson type of artist or something.

Ive seen some images of the adult, and it looks interesting though.

To be fair, it's based on the script and at the point in development, it's said that the creature designs were uninspired.

But. Saying that. I love the Space Jockey here.

Really enjoyed this issue.

I may be wrong, but it seems like a few changes were made. A couple of scenes seemed to play out differently than I remember.

Just finished #4. I still think the colouring on this is some of the best from Dark Horse. I'm not sure if I'm just confused, or if there's geography mix-up but the airlock and cooling unit both looked the same to me? I do like the new Alien. I'm still disappointed it's not Cobb's take on it, but I still like it.

Dammmmmnnnnnn at some of the death artwork too. Looking forward to the conclusion. Definitely going to sitdown and re-read the script and then the comic together soon too. Need a refresher.

I went back to #2 to try translating the text on the wall. It's just non-sense unfortunately, and even looks like some of the Engineer script was flipped around. Shame, that could have been fun.

I don't think someone should be too dissapointed by that. I have hard time imagining the damn thing moving properly let alone being a viable threat. I always found Cobb's take to be plain goofy

I get that, but I'm still with Hicks here. Much like the Boss Film Predator, if there was any visual medium that could make the Cobb creature work, it would be in the still art paneling of comics. And I would have loved to seen that! :)

Last issue is solid.

A was hoping for the unused ending where the Alien kills Ripley/Roby and talks in her voice. But I get that it's not in the script.

Art is as great as the rest of the series.

Im hoping for some nice extras in the hardcover, but I won't hold my breath.

I got a delivery from Forbidden Planet today. Sadly, this was not included. Guess I'll just have to wait longer...

Solid final issue! Great artwork and phenomenal coloring. I really liked how brutal they made the alien in this adaptation! Well farewell Dark Horse, it's been a pleasure!

I do have the hardcover and just ended reading it few minutes ago. I liked it allot . Alien looks good, kills looks good and the plot is different enough to keep one focused and entertained. Hardcover is heavy, cool looking book, but aside from introducing letter and four additional arts at the end there is nothing more in it.

True that.  Charlie Holloway could have been a descendant if anti-maskers.

If I recall correctly though, some of those original concepts WERE just blobs though...

I got my HC and final issue at the weekend. A strong one for Dark Horse to go out on with Alien. Another fantastic art team (all 3 of the last series have looked fantastic IMHO). Had some minor pacing issues - more so than Gibson's A3, I think - but otherwise a good adaptation!

Still waiting on the hard cover (it's ordered though) and I agree that the final three DH releases had some awesome artwork. As for the pacing, to me at least, it matched up with the slow burn of the first film (which can make for a somewhat uneventful issue or two) but I enjoyed the art enough that even the "boring" parts were interesting to look at. I don't know about you but I was always playing "where's Jonesy" throughout those panels

Finished this today. It was a very solid read. Made me appreciate the differences as well as my love for that original film.

The design for the Alien was different enough. It did feel a little bland. Kinda reminded me of the monsters from Pitch Black.

The Space Jockey design was very cool. Yorick.

I would honestly love to see a continuation of this story. But unfortunately never will.

Overall it felt like there was a touch of what the Prequels did mixed with the original film.

I bring up this very point in the podcast. It's said in the forward that they were trying to get away from Cobb and Moebius, but then we have all these ship exteriors and interiors we've seen before mashed together. At least give us some early underrepresented designs like the Foss stuff if you're going to be copying those elements.

Exactly! Foss had some excellent designs to suit their trippy 70s vibe. There was a lot of unused work that would let them move away from the popular concept art that had the greatest influence on the final film while still bringing to life the early conceptions of the story. Throwing it all away to trace Prometheus concept art is just ... Why?

Yeah the Alien being overall fairly similar (mostly the head/lack of eyes) was something that surprised me. I didn't mind it, but given the concept it might have been cooler if we'd got something completely different than the one that made it into the actual final.

I came into The first issue with a really positive outlook, I thought the alternate space jockey corpse looked really cool and interesting, the further I got though the more confused I got. I had assumed they somehow got a hold of the head and brought it back, I got confused about the cocooning scene as well. I wish they would have taken extra steps to differentiate from the original film more, I feel like it still hearkened back to Prometheus concepts which made it feel less original. There's some amazing alien storylines out there, but I feel like a lot of times things end up half done and we just have to appreciate what we get as alien fans, great concept but poor execution is the baseline for Alien.

Solid Pod as usual guys. Was great to hear the round table discussion. Ridgetop I am with you 100% reference is super important. I say an artist is only as good as his/her reference. Using reference does not mean tracing someone else's work. Unfortunately the industry is just going in that direction and has been for about 10 years. It's more prevalent in the larger publishers. Even talent does it and they blame the deadline, complete cop out.

Hi honestly think people don't sketch anymore, they do everything in the computer which forces them into corners.

Al that being said, I thought the crew, Space Jockey, derelict and Alien looked awesome.
