For me the answer's pretty obvious.
As it is the always underappreciated underdog to my eyes, additionally the film got me into Alien overall in general and probably studying film because of Charles de Lauzirika's documentaries. Today it remains incomplete, I wish that could change but do not expect it ever to, for a long time I hoped that might change by this year. Whether you love it or hate it or believe it middle of the road, it will always be a fascinating thing and I honestly think that's worth more than something simply being just a good time.

the film that got me into Alien in general
That's quite an introduction ! ;)
I love Alien 3. As of right now it's my personal favourite out of the original trilogy, despite its flaws and how seemingly bleak and hopeless it is. The setting itself is probably my favourite aspect of the movie, I love how Fury's prison looks. I also love how it went back straight back to one Xeno, IMO it made Ripley's confrontation with it feel much more personal. Oh, and the Goldental's score - truly a work of art
Just saw the poll. Yes, I will definitely celebrate and I expect juicy in-depth 3+ hours long retrospective podcast hosted by Corporal, RidgeTop, Xenomorphine, Vodoo and Omegamorph
I've always enjoyed the film from the first watching - and I still do to this day. I know it has its flaws, but I just enjoy it as much as the first two regardless and it's an absolutely fascinating film to learn about. I don't expect Fox to do anything, but we'll certainly be doing a retrospective podcast and hopefully an interview or two. That said, we did our best Alien 3 interview already, I think - CdL.
Yes, and I expect nothing from 20th.

You have pretty much said what I was going to say :) I remember when Alien 3 was first released and my mum renting it on VHS on its release day....which she did through gritted teeth lol. It was two years after I first saw Aliens which made me an instant fan. Alien 3 is the first Alien film I remember its release and I can still remember the anticipation and excitement waiting to see it. I became obsessed with cut/deleted scenes from the Alien movies after the Aliens special edition was released and became even more interested in them after learning about Alien 3 and what was cut from the final film further down the line. Same with Alien. Seeing the Alien 3 workprint for the first time in the 90s was huge for me as it was the only 'uncut' version available at the time. Even though I love the first three films equally when it comes to reading and learning about the films I find myself reading more about Alien & Alien 3 than I do Aliens. The Alien 3 Assembly cut was a dream come true for me as a fan.
Alien 3 was my intro to the series. Now while i dont expect much to be done for its 30th anniversary. I would love something
This thread has my sword cuz Alien 3 is le shit.

All they've done with Alien3 all these years is making bundles with it lmao
Pretty sure the whole Anthology documentaries thing only exists because of CDL's interested in Alien³ though, and ditto for the Special Edition, so that's not necessarily that true.
Alien Quadrilogy was 19 years ago. They've not done much with it since but re-release on Blu 12 years ago.
Also true, sadly we don't get much for anything that's not Alien, even the Aliens stuff tends to be things we have got before repackaged, apart from the JW Rinzler books, forever cursing the fact he was up for Alien³ but Fox apparently was not.

Fam it didn't even get a proper cleanup for the Anthology release, even A:R had more work done on it because the director was involved

Sweet :) Looking forward to this!
I have looked forward to the 30 year anniversiary of Alien 3, to me a underrated alien classic, a return to the gritty and dark atmosphere and making the xeno dangerous and a scary thing again. The assembly cut is easily one of my fave movies and I rank it above aliens actually. I saw it in hmm 2001? And liked it since then, but Ima fan of the creature and not of newt and hicks, they are support actors to the main actors: xeno and ripley. So I didnt bother at all that they got killed.
Unlike most fans of that time who prefered dark horse comics that made Newt and Hicks and Ripley a xenomorph killing team and wiping them out in their hundreds with ease... I prefer that alien 3 had the balls to kill them.
(On that note: was it ever explained where ripley went and how she came back in aliens book 2?)
Also I saw a lot of commercials about the upcoming alien 3 and games of it to all consoles of which the one on game boy have stood up the best and to me is easily the best version and did many new things for the genre and gaming many overlook now.
Looking forward to the anniversiary stuff avpgalaxy and hicks, hmm I hope you get a interview with David fincher which would be a shock, or with morse :P
True that we havent got much of alien 3 materials since the quadriology, but they gave us assembly cut and on the bluray fixed the sound, I dont think disney will make anything more than that now, I dont see them doing what we have asked and Fox was working on and according to SM, had a screening to some test audience where the Xenos effects was fixed and looked good, nor a version from Fincher. Afterall disney wont be releasing those on 4K but on streaming only so......
Nor did we get a book of behind the scenes like Alien and Aliens got.
I feel that's more Cameron dragging his feet on approving the 4K than anything.
Well Disney wont be releasing it on Bluray anyway so no point in it.
I don't need an anniversary as an excuse to celebrate the underappreciated masterpiece that is Alien 3. I celebrate it every damn day!

Every minute of Alien³ is like a freaking fever dream. Can't wait to see the AC. 8)
I've been watching all the Alien films lately. I intend to rewatch Alien3 "Assembly Cut" soon to commemorate the anniversary.
The first footage I ever saw of a Xenomorph was the Runner/ Dragon in Alien3. My mum covered my child like eyes with a blanket at the gruesome parts. I did get to see the climax (Theatrical Cut).
I wouldn't see the full length theatrical cut till years later.
With still no word of a 4K version of Alien³ or Aliens for that matter a fan's apparently decided:

On account of Alien 3 not being remotely scary, I mean.
Alien 3 is easily scarier than aliens and resurrection :P

Yes: I love alien 3, to me its the perfect ending to the ripley story and a proper alien movie, but then again I have nothing against dark movies who dare to kill charachters off and not play the safe card that I guess most fans after Aliens was expecting.

As much as I love Alien 3 I wouldn't call it "scary"
As Dave Barry once wrote, the scariest thing about Alien 3 was the hypodermic needle.
For me the Dragon was the last time an Alien was terrifying.

Too bad, the dutch angles had their potential.
Remember when a friend was over during the summer holiday when we were 13 or 14 years old and watched movies with my little brother and watched aliens and then alien 3.
I and my brother had seen the movies before so had no issues while the two others found aliens hard to watch but was no danger., our friend was not a fan of horror as blood and gore terrified him. When we watched alien3 he paniced and had to take several breaks. ;D As he said after the movies were over: Aliens is okay since its never any blood anywhere in it, quite tame, but alien 3 was the opposite scary and full of blood and scary scenery of human bodies getting torn which freaked him out. xD
Ah good old days xD
Always found Alien³'s cancer symbolism/imagery scary
Did you see it dubbed in German? I can see why that would be scary.
I can't rule that out
I don't expect anything. But my dream is that they replace the rod puppet effects with a CGI alien, or at least go over the effects to make it seamless in the film. Seeing Spike with the level of CGI as seen in Covenant, for instance, would be insane. I know there's many factors that prevent this, but it's a dream of mine and I believe the film deserves touching up.
Did you check out the above videos though?
We will most likely eventually get that even if we do not get an official release.

I'd be content with a CGI replacement, but honestly I'd like to see that original puppet put into the footage without the poor composition. That's even more unlikely. lol

It's not unlikely at all as you can see above, it's a work in progress situation, and we have word from Alien Archive that we have an official equivalent out there somewhere just waiting to be released someday.
I admit I only watched a little of the opening of the video was like "just looks a bit darker" but it's really obvious in those shots. The second one in particular you can really see the matte lines disappearing.
The dream come true would've been Assembly Cut with Ox scene replaced by Dog one and upscaled to 4k. Cleaned up special effects are also welcomed.
I doubt we will get a such release since its disney, physical movies seems to be something they dont want to do and said some years ago they wont do with alien movies, so at best we might get a time limited stream if they do a update to alien 3. :/
Back when Kradan was just a small innocent child and still in kindergarten he used to go into the room and look what his dad was watching . One evening he saw his dad watching a movie where a man was climbing up a ladder and everything was orange. Completely uniterested Kradan quickly wandered off the room. Only many years latter Kradan would realise that what he saw that evening was Morse from Alien 3 in a rush to pour some hot lead
That's actually my earliest memory of seeing anything Alien 3-related. I have a good reason to remember that because that was also the evening when Kradan ate some carrots with prunes which led to him vomiting all over the kindergarten's toilet floor on the next day

Kudos to their work, but it loses detail and it's motion still doesn't look right to me. It really needs proper re-implementation rather than just a going over.
I think if you look at the first and last it clearly gains detail, it's only the middle one it loses anything, and that's necessary to make it look better- and the motion I never had an issue with personally I always really loved the rod puppet work.
Which was the intent behind the puppet if I remember rightly - some weird ass movement. I'm definitely curious to see more of this project. Hope they keep going with it.

So today I listened to the wonderful AVP Galaxy podcast that the lads conducted with Charles De Lauzirika back in 2020 about the Special Edition of A3.
To my surprise I have just found out that there is a longer cut of Wreckage and Rage:The making of Alien 3 documentary.
Would any of you kind folks be able to point me in the direction of where one might "acquire" this longer version of the documentary. I already own both the DVDs and Blurays of the Quadrilogy but my blu rays do not come with any of the bonus discs. Please help a fellow fan out.

In all fairness, you can get the full set second hand for under £10.
Always adored this movie, both versions actually. The nihilism is strong here. Almost apocalyptic. I love that.
Good
I find it funny that so many people take away nihilism from it when I actually take away the opposite.
Well, ending might be somewhat hopeful but otherwise Alien 3 has pretty bleak tone. There's a reason why many people remember it primarily for killing off two major characters in the opening credits
Yeah but to me that's exactly the point, stuff like car crashes happen and people will be awful, but life's still worth something in spite of all that.
Im laughing when I see comments on how many wanted to see Hicks, Newt and Ripley be one family and go on adventures together in the future and kick alien ass, on youtube. Im like okay, I see the point but will it be fun or even scary to watch when you know Newt, Hicks, Ripley is basicly unkillable and cant be harmed or will come out through it fine and as nothing happened? Like all those marvel heroes movies?
To me that would just make the alien movies utterly boring as its the horror, thriller and you cant be sure if even the main hero will survive or not, as the xenomorph is the true star of the movies, not the humans.
Quote from: Local Trouble on Feb 12, 2019, 03:55:34 PMHell, they could have given each cryotube its own personal escape pod and written the story so that only Ripley's crashed on Fury while the others didn't.
No Hicks. No Newt. No pointless deaths. Ripley gets her solo adventure. Mission accomplished.
That I could live with as that would make a big effect on Newt and Hicks and questions if they would hang together or split and also make sure they arent invicible heroes.
Yeah but then they'd get disgusting spin-offs like Star Wars.

She could have just crashed all alone too. While I dislike Ward/Fasano's script, I do like them completing omitting any scenes of what caused the crash. I think that would have worked really well too.
Universe is a cold-hearted bitch. At least, so I'm told by Alien 3
It is. And in general, that's something I actually really like about Alien. But Blue's not wrong. That is totally a valid takeaway from Alien 3, and something I'd never really thought much about, focusing on the unjustness of it all instead. Hell, even in Charybdis there's that light with Blue's actions.
@Corporal Hicks Do we have access to that last draft by Rex Pickett btw?

WHat! You don't want a Brett and Parker spin off D+ series? And you call yourself a fan! For shame!
The bonus situation, starring Parker and Brett. ;D

Much appreciated.
A link to a Ralph Brown interview about his ALIEN 3 experiences from another site was posted somewhere on the site. I have not been able to find it. Would someone repost or send me the link please.
Thanks in advance :)

If you mean a recent thing from Ralph, here's the one: https://nz.news.yahoo.com/alien-3-ralph-brown-chaotic-david-fincher-troubled-sequel-074117705.html
Perfect Organism spoke to him last year (I think) too.
Thank you it was the recent one :)
