Title: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

QuoteAs movie audiences gear up for the next installment of The Hobbit, gamers now have their own Tolkien project to get excited about. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is on its way to a game screen near you on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, we feel the upcoming game showcases some of the gameplay innovation potential now possible on next-generation consoles through its groundbreaking Nemesis System.

While many previous games set in Middle-earth have revolved around the major events or characters depicted in Tolkien's books, Shadow of Mordor offers a new chapter that fits comfortably between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape. Along the way, developer Monolith is exploring a fascinating next-gen approach to enemies, encounters, and storytelling, one in which every player shapes their own story through the choices they make. The Nemesis System assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion.

QuoteMiddle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor is a new story set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. It puts players in control of Talion, a "valiant ranger" whose family is killed in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor.

After he is killed, Talion is resurrected by a spirit of vengeance and, given Wraith abilities, heads into Mordor to enact revenge against those who killed him and his family.

Might be interesting, though being a guy that's been resurrected already sounds dumb as hell.

Aside from the fact it seems to kind of shit on the lore, this could be good. Looking forward to see more.

Could be interesting, But so far the story sounds shite. 'Wrath-like' abilities?...Sounds like this is going to go Force Unleashed on Middle Earth.

That enemy mechanic sounds very interesting to me. If enemies survive fights with you than they personally grow in the game just like how your own character grows and they live to fight you another day.

I just want another Return of The King game. If it's similar to that, then we're f**king good.

f**k the plot for this game, but if the gameplay is decent then, I'll let it slide.

Considering there hasn't been a good LotR game since Battle for Middle-earth II, I'll let this one slide right by until it proves itself as something even remotely worthy of interest to a fan of the series. Or me, at least...

Gameinformer article is up, game is described as playing like the Arkham games with a sword and you've got wraith superpowers.  ::)

The screenshots don't look that great to me, it doesn't look very "next-gen" and some of these designs look seriously out of place.

The nemesis system sounds impressive though, if they can pull that off it'd be some achievement.

I don't get it... is it an RPG or an action-adventure/hack and slay?

Sounds awesome. But I just had wished they would finally do an RPG in the tolkien universe that is not an MMO

So much Assassin's Creed in this game - I'm sold. The nemesis system they have in place looks cool, I'm really liking that a lot, I only just read about it, but seeing it in practice is nice. The fight the player starts in the beginning was also good, I loved the animations above all else.

Lots of both in my opinion.

Is that some Steve Blum I hear?

The wraith powers look like bullshit.
The nemesis system looks interesting although it seems it'd be easy to break, a bit of a shame it seems to be the only original thing they've come up with.

This doesn't leave me with high hopes for the story either.
QuoteMost of all, my inner Tolkien nerd has been left wondering about Talion. After all, we know that he can't win. He can't kill Sauron, so what difference can he make? De Plater hints that he is important to Lord of the Rings - though you might need to see the third Hobbit movie to understand it properly.

"We see Sauron in the form when he flees Dol Goldur." says De Plater. "And then we see Sauron in Lord of the Rings, bound to Baradur, unable to leave Mordor, trapped there and confined to that tower with his single flaming eye, which is very different to how we saw him at the start, 12 foot tall and striding out and kicking arse."

It seems that Talion's actions are crucial to why Sauron never again leaves Mordor. For Tolkien nerds, that's a must-read story.

as i've grown older, i've come to realize that gameplay mechanics and overall fun factor tops Lore all the time.

Like AC4, it kinda threw the lore around and shook it up, but it was easily one of the best Assassin's Creed games.

The more and more I watch the walkthrough, the more and more I think it's more of a "copy/paste" of Arkham instead of AC. Maybe just the climbing elements are from AC, but everything else seems to be from Arkham.

Title: Re: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Post by: Sabby on Jan 25, 2014, 01:51:43 AM
We may have different definitions of gimmick xD I tend to use it as a more negative term. If it's an integral feature that's being talked up and doesn't deliver, like a Wiimote, I tend to refer to it as a gimmick. Where as something like the face mocap in L.A. Noir isn't a gimmick to me because it actually does what it's supposed to and deserves to be front and center as it is.

Nemesis could be either of these.

It seems like the nemesis system trully works rather than being just an interesting thing written in the game description :D
It may be worth it just let tons of orcs kill you at the beginning of the game to make it more challenging  ;D
I also like that you can place a bounty on an orc that killed you or is making you a lot of trouble(someone like the Pot-Licker from the article :D ) and he will than appear in the game of your friends and they can hunt him down for you earning rewards for both of you I think.

Watched a buch of playthroughs with the devs at pax. They showed the nemesis system demo and it was fun to watch each time cause diffrent orcs, diffrent aproach, diffrent situations.

So this game is getting good reviews (which I honestly didn't expect) so I'm now tempted to get it...

Has anyone bought it here? Can they post their impressions?

For those that have finished the game (obviously massive spoilers) I have been hearing a rumor (with cut scenes!) going around about
Spoiler
the final boss being Morgoth/Melkor or some weird fusion of him and Sauron
[close]
is there truth to this?

So I bought this game on Tuesday via Steam, here my first impressions:

Combat/Gameplay: It really is the lovechild of Batman's Arkham series and Assassins' Creed. You move through the open-world just like Ezio/Altair, etc. with most of the time even the EXACT same animations. Works! The combat then switches to the free-flow system, I must say though it's even a tick better than Arkham's; the parry/counter is much quicker, fights are much faster paced, so combat really is kick-ass!
Nemesis: Can't make a full review of this, since I'm still at the stage of the game where you can't manipulate the Uruks (suuucks! why make you wait?) However it seems rather unspectacular and even a bit annoying during fights. Maybe my opinion will change once I can actually influence the Uruk Hierarchy directly.
Btw.: First I started playing it with a Xbox 360 Controler, but I changed to Mouse and Keyboard, it simply more percise (especially Archery)

Story:
Talion seems cool, fairly relatable, but it's the Wraith who actually steals the show. Best cutscenes are reserved for him so far. Haven't experienced any twist or turns yet but I'm just 5 hours into the game.

Graphics: Since it is partly next gen and I'm playing this on my PC, this is the strongest point of the game. The details (apart from ground) are beautifully done and the farsight, the light/shadowplay, as well the facial animations are a delight to look at.

Not so satisfying: It is even open world, but how can I put this... you don't really feel the urge to discover everything, like for example Risen 3 or Skyrim. I at least only feel like doing the normal and side missions. But again, maybe that will change later when I'm allowed to manipulate the Uruks.

Overall: Fairly efficient game, steals from the best in the genre, so how can it possibly be bad. Bit disappointed with the Nemesis so far, but like mentioned that might change. Open world is a bit of a big word for this game, it doesn't feel as alive as for example Arkham City or Black-Flag.

I'd give it probably a 75 % rating
