Love it how "hands-on" Giger was on Alien. He didn't just design all the film's alien elements, he also sculpted and painted the actual props. Scott's films often have the feel of watching an oil painting in motion (eg. The Duellists), and with Alien it's like watching a Giger painting in motion at times.

Movie props usually look rather terrible in plain daylight, they are often hastily assembled for low-light conditions for very quick shots whereas Giger's props were like actual works of art.
