As CITY HUNTER says, Matthews actually served in Vietnam and based Apone largely on himself. Got a couple of purple hearts if I remember rightly.

Only other films I recall him being in are The Fifth Element and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Funny story about Matthews. I met him at one of the conventions and as we were walking away he winked at my lady. Freaked her out quite badly. xD
