I attended Wonderfest in Louisville this weekend.
Two of the guests were going to be Nimrod Antal and Greg Nicotero.
They had to cancel last minute due to editing issues they had to take care of.
But, Harry Knowles from Ain't It Cool News came and brought with him a surprise.
Greg Nicotero, as way of an apology for not being able to attend, provided us with an exclusive behind the scenes look at PREDATORS. Specifically, a look at the "classic" Predator from the movie.
Harry did call Robert Rodriquez while he was there and we got a chance to ask a few questions.
I asked about the multi laser sight scene that's in the trailer...whether it was actually in the film or modified for the trailer. Robert stated that, while there are several Predators in the movie, that particular scene was "enhanced" just for the trailer.
Anyway, here are some shots of the video we got to see. Some are a little fuzzy as I was trying to take pics of the video in the dark. But, you can still get a great look at it.
Pay particular attention to the pic with the Pred masks. You can clearly see that there is a regular version and a heavily damaged version.

Yeah those are not finished, it lacks some painting jobs, and the ladder by his side in the jungle tells they weren't shooting, but testing. So it's cool, to see the evolution of the work, we still haven't the real deal but that's almost it.
It's all coming together nicely, kids!
It's amazing. And it needs a bit time to analyse. ;D ;D

The chestplate simply has more particles that adapt to the skin style of the Pred which isn't the case with Anytime 2... but don't worry: I'm pretty sure that the paint job and particles are very unfinished and there will be a lot of details added... I mean if the helmet and the chest plate really look like that... uff we would have a minor problem... but don^t worry... it's not the final product you're seeing... it's like the title says a preview
We may get that video online at some point.... They used the same titles as all the behind the scenes vids we got already...
question about the cracked mask:

In the script the mask was cracked in the middle by the ehadbutt of the BSP right? This mark doesn't look like that happened... can we expect a totally new plan of the battle scene?

The 'studio' pics look a bit 'fresh out of the paintshop' to me but the behind the scenes setphotos look great, this actually looks like a predator so I'm fine with it :)
I don't need to worry about the classic Pred anymore, they got it right, absolutely right.
Now, i just hope that the new Pred face will tick with me... i really hope it's different, but that you can tell it's a Predator.
Very happy with the monster part of the movie for now. I just hope they really did something great with classic, and don't waste him in 2 minutes.

Who knows that I think even sabres doesn't know if it is a maquette or stunt head. But I think it is a maquette, look at the Dreads they look like plastic.

Alot better then expected, but the dreds are longer then my liking (almost looks AVPish). Getting really pumped up right now. Im not going to watch or view anymore pictures of this movie as I want to enjoy every second of it in the theatre.

Looks great to me! Thanks for sharing :) I love that at least ONE Predator will have the netting. I consider that a staple of the Predator gear and I'm really curious to see him put it back on when puts his all his gear back together. I wonder if we'll see any true purpose to the netting?

Awesome to finally see some pictures of the classic predator! Looks great, no question.
I love everything about the classic Predator (or ANytime 2 as he is commonly refered to now as), except for the mask. I wish his mask would have more individual traits instead of being a carbon copy of Anytime's. Pussyface's was similar yet different at the same time, which how I had pictured Anytime 2's mask.
On a side note, I will be pissed if classic Predator dies in the movie.

Looks good, though the slightly longer dreds remind me of AVP. I don't know why Nimrod/RR talk about how the AVP films made the Predators seem cartoony with their bigger dreds and longer blades, yet for all they are doing exactly that in this film too! Hope the netting is also in use in the film as seen in the behind the scenes snaps. Anyways, we'll see how it all plays out. Hopefully it's all good :)
If you notice in predator 1 anytime got big ass blades there also try watch again and the dreads alittle longer alittle shorter dosent matter its like us humans we dont have same hair lenths and style do we ^^

yeah Becuse remember to be able to make the roar and closing opening they need to have all the machines in the face working and all that crap so im pretty sure they where just testing it for looks.

To be fair to ADI, if you go back and look at the BTS video of the first AVP their Predator face had a great deal of motion to it. Its just that none of that motion translated to the screen.
But again the overall design of the ADI preds simply wasn't strong, or close, enough compared to SW. From the looks of it the Preds created for PREDATORS are looking really fantastic.

While I think it's great they are replicating the original Predator design, I do hope he has some differences, even slight ones. Making an identical twin of the original just doesn't sit right with me. Anytime 1 had his film, and was a unique Pred on his own. Pussyface had his time to shine too and was a great new take while keeping the old. The Pred Elder from P2 also had his own flair but with bits that paralleled Anytime 1 (like his Plasma Caster). I want Anytime 2 to be unique as well, he deserves to be, yet I fear he will just be a visual clone of the original.
Nothing wrong with paying homage to Anytime 1, but I really hope there are some differences with Anytime 2, even if it's just with accessories and such... something to make him his own man.. er Pred. =^)

Well, one of the things I was doing here was... Originally, I was going to be moderating a PREDATORS panel with Greg Nicotero and Nimrod Antal. And Nimrod has just been crunched - working on the final mix of PREDATORS which he's feeling the pressure of the release date which is coming right at him. SO... The PREDATORS panel wound up being me and Dave Connover (one of the grand poo-bahs of WONDERFEST) - and Dave and I had a grand time talking about PREDATORS - I've been talking with Rodriguez for about 14 years regarding PREDATORS - and told stories about Robert's original scriptment - the process of choosing Nimrod for the film, how the project came to return to Rodriguez about more than a decade of cobwebs. THEN... Dave queued up a 9 minute special behind the scenes video by Greg Nicotero and the wizards at KNB that was to show us the process that they went through to bring back to life the original Predator - with a higher degree of articulation (hey, there's been some minor advancements in the past 25 years or so.) HOWEVER, as Greg went to introduce the video from his workshop at KNB...
He first produced a zombie that he's working on for THE WALKING DEAD - I haven't seen any of KNB's work for this VERY anticipated show from AMC and Darabont. Any concern about this show not adapting the more ghoulish aspects of THE WALKING DEAD. Well, I haven't seen such an awesome cadaverous Zombie since RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD or... even LIFEFORCE. Only... this was mixed with more "wet" than either of those. We're talking very cool work here. The glimpse raised my already high expectations. Can't wait to see what Frank does with this - and hopefully we'll get some glimpses to share with you shortly!
But as Greg put the zombie down... And moved ever so slightly to his left... We could see further back into KNB - and there... clearly in the background was something they were working on, obviously, for THE THING prequel. This thing was right out of Bottin's THE THING. Two heads split and joined by that stretching, warping slimey muscle... "what is that" "that's human, that's human" and That is decidedly not. I'm still scared shitless by this project, but just seeing that one head. well, two heads with alot of gross between the two... Let's just say, I'm cautiously optimistic now.
After the reel - we chatted for a bit about what we just saw and I decided. Dammit, let's see if I can ring up Robert Rodriguez, put him on Speaker phone and make him do a Q&A with this audience dying for official PREDATORS news.
Robert gracefully began a 30-45 minute Q&A with the audience. Telling us that the CG is very minimal - and that there was just a single green screen shot in the entire production - otherwise - they built the environments and sets or found location. KNB built a ton or practical stuff - and the CG is enhancements mainly - and the "dogs" when they're running and dynamic. That went over very well with this MODEL orientated crowd.
Robert also shared that in the adaptation process from his crazy expensive treatment - to what Nimrod shot was a process that involved having to watch the AVP films to see what they had done, that might have been in that treatment. As Robert didn't want to repeat those beats. But mainly - he felt that in taking PREDATORS into space and into a non-Earth film... he wanted to get our feet wet here - with the idea of taking us the rest of the way in the next PREDATORS - which depending on the success of this film, will possibly take us to the PREDATORS homeworld.
Wait! You thought that was this film? No. The planet here is like the Predators' Hunting preserve. They drop various dangerous things to hunt on this planet and let the things interact, fight and they enter the fray as well. I even got the notion that perhaps even Predator outcasts might be placed here to be hunted. BUT he didn't say that directly.
You will see some Predator extra gizmos, you'll also see PREDATORS fighting in different techniques - to show that perhaps... there could be different disciplines that the Predators explore as hunters and warriors. I find that a relief. Hopefully that'll translate to different kinds of armor and dress.

Everyone who is complaining about these little things are jumping to conclusions.. In the pics the predator isn't even fully finished, some things need more coloring and stuff...just so you know..

They won't be identical, I guess. Classic has some bandage on his arm for instance, longer dreads. I don't have any problems with a very similar design. Hell, even the same one. I've been longing too long to see it on the big screen.

Some people have their taste and don`t want simple reuse of old design ::) If Winston was also as "creative" as those guys then we`d naver get Pussyface, P2 elder and all other P2 (and even AvP, with beautifull celtic mask to start with) preds.
Still why does it have to mean the original design can't be used again? There are already new things, what's the problem with a nod for the original one? Also it's not that unimaginable that two hunters use similar weaponary.

In a recent article even the journalist said the suits look fake up close. It is with proper lighting and cinematography that all the magic comes together. You can't judge the realism of this suit based on these photos.
I also mean that the suit itself isn't finished, they didn't paint all the details and such yet on some pictures.
Thats why I said it will be fine in the actual movie.

thats the case with alot of movies. look at the alien costumes in aliens, in the movie they look great but in real life the were pretty simple and crappy looking.

I noticed the red in the dreads on the adult mask as well.
Also, if you look close at the adult mask, you can see some red/white spots on what is the Predator's head as well.
Not sure how that will play out in the movie.

They just get covered up in the belts and the skin coloring.

i think that pic is just concept art. it looks too good to be a costume and the armor is completely different than the movie.

Yup... The bone looks very old, it's missing teeth... So either it's a really old jaw bone from some other creature... WHICH IT IS.... Or Mr. Black has a really old, worn, exposed jaw and a really bad dental plan...

Looks better than what I was thinking. And it looks pretty much the same way that an old Predator RP character of mine looks like, so I'm being biased that I like the design, but whatever, it looks good.
Don't like the fingers feet or red eyes but apart from that it is pretty good nothing special though.
Red visor is always the shit. The red tipped dreads are kinda dumb, but I can live with it.

BSP doesn't look anything like it came out of a trash heap. The only thing that looks like Megatron from the movie is the shoulder cannon, kinda has a similar style.
Is the red visor actually in script. I have not heard anything about it before I saw this picture.

I'm wondering that if a predator will be hunting an other predator then I think a new predator vision mode will be debuted: maybe the vision mode from the game when a predator can see an other (cloaked) predator.

Keep in mind we've seen some long ass dreads before avp in predator 2, one of the preds at the end had real long dreads, pulled back in a tail. Looked decidedly tribal. The problem with the AVP dreads is they stuck out so much they just looked very unnatural and too heavy.
