Still Collating...

Alien – The Roleplaying Game has been very successful over the past 5 years. From winning multiple awards to being the 13th most used system on the popular Foundry VTT in 2023. To date, Free League have released multiple sets under the Alien RPG brand: The Core Rulebook, The Starter Set, 3 cinematic adventures (The Draconis Strain Trilogy: Chariot of the Gods, Destroyer of Worlds and Heart of Darkness) and 2 expansions with campaigns in them (Colonial Marines Operations Manual and Building Better Worlds).

Free League has just announced that they’re launching a Kickstarter for the 2e (second edition) of the Alien RPG this Fall. Some of the new features are as follows:

Free League has revealed their core line-up for the upcoming Kickstarter, with more details coming soon:
  • Based upon feedback from thousands of players over five years of adventures, the Second Edition of the core rules delivers an updated and streamlined version of the ALIEN RPG fans know and love, along with additional new artwork, new content, and a variety of new tools for players and Game Mothers alike, all fully compatible with previous releases and game material.
  • The new 2e starter set will be redesigned as the perfect starting point for newcomers to roleplaying in the ALIEN universe, containing everything they need for game night including abridged 2e rules, character sheets, custom dice, reference cards, various handouts, and an expanded 2e edition of the fan-favorite Hope's Last Day scenario set on Hadley's Hope just prior to the unforgettable events of Aliens.
  • The new cinematic scenario boxed set, Rapture Protocol, written by Jonathan Hicks and Free League’s Tomas Härenstam, returns to the roots of the ALIEN franchise, featuring the crew of a small star freighter on a resupply run to the remote industrial colony, soon embroiled in a deadly conflict.
  • The miniatures set is designed to bring the events of Rapture Protocol to life, but fully complement other adventures and skirmish battles throughout the ALIEN RPG series.

On the announcement page, they’ve also released a short trailer that showcases the new art we can probably be expecting for the 2nd Edition.

Nice. I've been thinking a lot over the past few weeks about getting into the RPG soon. It's good to hear it's got a lot of life left to it.

Great that we're getting another scenario so soon after BBW. Looking forward to it!

Now we're talking.

We're going full WH 40K with this bitch

That was Prodos. This sounds more like civvies and a few Aliens. Civvies and more Alien sculpts are what I want though, I have several platoons worth of muhreens as it is.

That's what's got me excited as well. If it's not just a one off gimmick of course.

So soon? I'd say it's quite the opposite IMO. At first they said their goal was for one book a year. They've not been able to keep that pace up. BBW's physical release was "recent" because it was delayed so many times. The PDF was released a long time ago, about a year ago now I think. This announcement is for the start of the Kickstarter that probably won't start before November. I'll be surprised if we see the PDF before the next summer.

Just checked my facts: the PDF for Heart of Darkness was released on the 15th of March 2022. BBW's PDF was out on the 9th of October 2023. This won't be released anytime soon IMO. The pace is about a year and a half with the recent instalments. Will see if it keeps on widening or if it is envigored with the 2nd Edition. There is potential there for some interesting things. I'm hopeful, but cautious.

The rules seem pretty stable as is (though I haven't played anything since Colonial Marines Operations Manual, so maybe they aren't holding up as well nowadays?); I wonder how significant a change the rules are going to be undergoing in this 2E, or if this is more just to account for changes to the world/setting coming in Romulus and Earth in a way that expansions might not be able to totally do on their own?

It does sound like a one off or very limited line. That doesn't bother me unless they're terrible single piece models or rubber pre-paints.

Isn't this a bit soon for a second edition?  The reviews have been pretty positive so not sure if the rules need work?

Just be glad its not the endless book-churn of Games Workshop's three-year edition cycle.

SM

Haven't bought any of the books anyway.

One major plot point I'd like to see explored (or at least expanded upon) is the five UA colony missions that were launched from 2104 to 2106 - namely, the Covenant, the Concordat, the Arceon, the Affiance, and the Allegiance.

Now granted, we KINDA know what happened to the Covenant, and the Concordat mission was a success, so there is comparatively little mystery there. The Arceon also successfully reached its destination, although we don't know where that was.

The Affiance and the Allegiance, conversely, were both lost, with no reason given hitherto. The Affiance was launched Trailward - the same direction as the Covenant - so at least we know that. Soooo, the Allegiance is the ship about which we know the least. I'd love it if we got some answers at some point.

Really skeptical a 2e is justified right now, when we haven't even gotten the third 'staple' sourcebook they promised.

Verite

Agreed, love the RPG and have all the books but it's too soon for a 2nd ed.
