What Is AvP2 Graphic Redux?
AvP2 Graphic Redux is a mod that I am currently making. It is a texture mod, and will change the current textures of Aliens vs Predator 2 into something less cartoonish looking from the era. I plan on changing every texture in the game, it might take months but it gives me something to do.
Will There Be New Skins?
I will change some of the character skins into different ones. For example, a predator skin into something similar that was in Predators. Change the runners skin  into something rather different from what it is. Weapons will also have a change in textures(depending on what class you are).
Any Other Modification Changes?
Nope, just textures and skins

I am redoing the textures. None of them will be from ANY mod. I'm going to try and reach a good amount of detail that it allows me too.

Will you do any map textures again aswell? I've seen a few mods so far which did it. Some maps are "full-hd textures". Takes a ton from your PC but it makes a difference. I hope you good luck with the mod, I'll be watching the future updates. ;)

This sounds interesting indeed! The AVP Classic redux mod I downloaded was stellar and I am eager to see a similar graphical overhaul with the sequel. Good luck!

You said that you're changing every texture? I take it this includes the worldtextures (map textures)? I hope so. There are only two other mods I know that attempted to do this.

It is a nightmare of a mod to finish. But it's VERY time consuming and requires so much trial and error testing that I've had to take breaks from working on it. Thus, it has taken years for me to work on.

So how far along is this mod? Or did you just start it?

I have started working on the weapon textures first, since they are simply the easiest to handle first. Animated textures and such, i'm not sure if my photoshop will edit them or not, I don't know I will have to see. I have to stop for a little bit because I have been scheduled at work for the past few days, but will get the next few days off. So there's that.

Yes, map textures are going to be edited in this mod. I am going to change them from there looks now into something different. But that also means having to go in game and testing them and see if they are positioned well in-game and changing them if they are not.


So, I had to move files over to a desktop because my laptop is having issues right now. And I am getting these errors when trying to use the unrez.bat and running it as an administrator.

These are preventing me from continuing with my first draft designs of the weapons. I have to print screen the stuff from De edit just to draft because Photoshop Elements nor GIMP can find the .TGA files. The errors showed up for a few milliseconds and just closed itself out, I am running Windows 8.1

as you probably know you can run the mod loose out of a DIR with .REZ extension just point the cmd line to it. those other mods are quite outdated. one is texturized and unsaturated. the other is color tweaks. the best is unpack with tools [(win 7 crash win explorer with WinRezLT)] so reboot after unpacking everything.

If you're having problems unrezzing the game files, you can use winrez LT (I highly advise against it as it crashes WIN7 and WIN8) OR you can use Dragon Unpacker:

Have you used it?

*Edit* So have it, and opened the AVP2.rez, but I have no idea on how to extract the files and stuff.

Check pms, and check the file tab for where and how to extract; you'll still need Tools to convert the DTXs.

Open a rez file with Dragon Unpacker (say AVP2.rez).

Right click on the folder you want to extract in the folder tree on the left sidebar. So if you want to extract it all, you right click on AVP2 folder in the sidebar and click extract all and enter the destination path.

Personally I use lithrez x AVP2.rez c:/FOLDER PATH/

I use Dragon Unpacker just when I want to extract a few files in a rez and not all of them.

you can use Dedit to convert the files to tgas. when you use Dedit you will need to generate a .DEP file*important* for loading the assets.  I unpacked the game...generated the dep.. then point Dedit to the unpacked dir w/ .DEP. for it to properly load the assets it'll also need to see them so add a text called "DirTypeTextures"(no ext) to all dirs. in textures folder. same for sounds"DirTypeSounds" and sprite "DirTypeSprites". when editing note the textures have added texture info so back up(copy paste) the dir and reference when needed. rightclick a texture and view the properties in Dedit to see what I mean by that. Tools are on the disc. also I noticed running the 2007 mod that it didn't fully load until I added the DirTypeTextures and ... files to all the directories. so they are required for it to run properly

Just released new concept art!

The Alien - Drone design was aimed to be similar to the Alien in the first movie(Alien).

Other than this, no other news at this time.

Taking a break from the enviroment textures and such. And because of the feedback of the design concept for the Drone. I started to work on it.

The front WILL definitely need more work on. I might also brighten the head up a little more.

What are your suggestions and what type of skins would you like to see?

Personally I think you wouldn't have to brighten it up TOO much. If you aim is to get more of that clear dome look.

I'll be obvious and say seeing a Jungle Hunter/Anytime predator design would be cool. BUT... I honestly would like to see more original designs. Maybe partially inspired by the Comics. Like this one:

Very good design especially on the head, but i would darken it a bit more because the eye sockets make it look like the drone really has eyes giving him a weird facial expression.

I dont know if you know this or not but you dont really have to be constrained by the original skin resolution, from my experience you can import a skin up to 1024x1024 into dedit, this allows you to get much more detail and more importantly avoid that cartoonish look that is characteristic of avp textures.

This kind of intricate detail would never be possible with the original 256x256 textures. Using a a texture that is effectively 16x larger will definetelly make the game heavier on the pc but the effect is dramatic for the best.

From my experiments i would say that 1024x1024 is the max res that dedit allows you to import, but if anyone could find a way of going over that limit that would be great.

I would need to upscale the textures file correct? It would be great to reach the amount of detail those weapons have. Just didn't know about it.

I usually upscale the original texture and sharpen it with photoshop to make the little details come out but also to give it some texture, then i add the small details i want.

Thanks to JP's tip about the upscaling to 1024x1024. The textures will be much more detailed than I knew was possible. And for that, I am releasing image of a prototype design of the planned one without the skull. It just wasn't working with the character model Making it look weird.

Completed more of the head, just need to work under the head textures and a few others, then I will move onto the bodywork.

It's probably the model itself. Because with the drone, I have had to go back and re size parts of the new textures to make it fit on the character correctly.

Nice,  as for the blurry mess what textures properties did you use? default or random ones? also what res is it at? (my guess 1024 x 1024?)

It looks good enough man, remember the game is 15 years old the engine is old.. your pushing it to the 'limit'

just create a directory in your game "custom/skins/characters/alien" and put your alien skins there, then in the game command line just put "-rez custom"


The predalien model is still twisting the textures but im pretty happy with the result

I tried opening the Lithrez.exe thing and it just instantly closes. So Apparently until I fix this. I won't be able to use lithrez. And when i use WinRez, the GRM.rez doesn't even show up at all. But Avp2 mod manager can find it. And when I did that. Nothing showed.

I also have that. The issue is that if I cant see the .dtx image the skin is not applied. I found the drone_head.dtx file but I can't tell if it either working o not.

I did what  you said and still nothing. I imported the .pcx file of the skin onto DeEdit. Modified it's properties. The  i loaded all the textures in the Alien file from DeEdit into Winrez. Created a .rez and nothing. How do I open the .dtx to make sure it is the right file?

Lithrez needs to be opened via command prompt.

on WinrezLT directory there is a program called DTXviewer, you can use it to open DTX files, but the output texture is the one that appears on dedit's texture viewer/editor.

To avoid confusion i would ignore the .rez file for now. Just go to the directory of the project you are working on dedit amd go to "skins/characters/alien" and copy the dtx files from there (drone head legs and torso). Then on your main avp2 game directory create one called "custom/skins/characters/alien" and paste there the dtx files you just copied. On the game's  launcher command line just put "-rez custom".
Its a much simpler process and you dont have to modify a .rez file evertime you do something to the skins.

Its actually becoming to look very good. On the compression thing you could always leave it uncompressed but remember that each DTX file will be aprox 5Mb or you could use 4x compression. Be carefull when you are compressing, dedit is buggy with files this large and sometimes will fail to create the alpha channel, this leads to the texture being invisible ingame. You can make sure that the alpha channel was created by looking on the dedit texture viewer, on the preview window there must be your texture and a white part next to it (drag the window to the left if you cant see this), if there is a black space next to your texture it means the alpha wasnt created.

Absolutely stunning work there! One thought, could u make the teeth on the drone appear more silver/translucent than off yellow? I have to take a break for a little while, lately with a three new people at work they have been scheduling me the most throughout the hours. And I haven't had the time to get back to this. But, without saying this project is NOT canned or anything. Just need to take a break because of work.

I also suggest backing it up, or at least save the hard drive and make it an external out of it to transfer the files over to another comp.

Small quick update, the skin is coming out nicely as planned! Some things like the skin color had to be changed, but that's due to not being able to match the color properly(But also for other reasons too). Trying to create a rez file, but my memory is failing me again even when I went back through this whole thread and through the links. My computer doesn't read any of the files. But through Winrez I can for some reason.

try in compatibility mode or run the program as administrator.
Welcome in windows 10 where the applications run in a totally random.
I think we're also lucky only if we can run the program dedit on new so.
This program was designed to run on Windows XP and has 15 years.

All my programs run just fine. It might be just two things.

1. The skin is turning out transparent.
2. I am still just not doing it right.

The skin is basically done, just need to test it myself and touch up any additional parts of it. But that's it.



So the Rez file is in the Custom folder but even then it still doesn't work. Even without the rez file and running the skin through the skin folder that you see used to work, but doesn't now.
All the values are set to what JP said.
Nothing shows up in the Custom folder, only in the WinRez program.

And nothing still shows in-game. DeEdit shows the skin and a white box. So the Alpha texture is there.

So I am testing the Alien skin in the campaign mode since it works perfectly fine in Multiplayer.

I was going through the Marine mission where you have to go into the hive to find Hall, it seems that the Aliens are invisible until they die. The skin was visible during the Alien story in third person, but once it showed the cutscene after you reach the area where all the cats are in the cages, it is invisible and can't see it during the animation of waking up whne the humans discover it.

I've been working on the fps hands and tail lately, but before I can get it to Winde with the final copy I need to get it to work with npc and single player cutscenes.



I need to stop working on this for a little while. My 11 year old dog just passed on monday and I'm still freaking out about it. Havent slept or ate that much for the past two days straight, and I don't know how to handle anything right now. Sorry, I will eventually get back to work if I ever recover from this...

Well the skin is done, and will be sent to Winde after I get out of work. Worked on the tail,jaw,claws.POV this morning to clear my head.

Also, the skin finally shows upon AI and not just multiplayer characters!

EDIT:

So I decided to move character skins to the bottom of the list to be worked on simply because they take too much time to focus on. The Alien skin took around maybe, 3 days just to complete the skin and make it detailed as possible.

Right now I am continuing the world textures, going through the campaign as I do them.

Need peoples opinion. How does this Hive texture look? I am still working on it, need to make it less sharpened.

Looks very nice, it is very detailed. There is only one thing.
Is it possible, besides editing texture to make special effects like slime on walls in hive, metal shine, some water effects? Or bloom on human and predator weapons and on alien claws? It would make the game more realistic and modern.

I plan on making the hive texture have a slim look to it. But first I am trying to make it look consistent with the maps. Because the texture tends to be turned and expanded on the maps I'm trying to find a way to make it look consistent and not a huge mess right now.

Characters will be last to do. The Alien claws don't need to shine. The reason is I'm not going to add a shine effect is because the maps have dirt areas and having them look clean while they run ariuns would take away from the realistic standpoint.

Predator/Marine weapons may have a shine, but until I start those, I have no idea what I'm going to design them to look like.

I'm in no rush to finish this project at all. All I can really say is that it will take as long as it needs. Changing and detailing 1 texture doesn't take a few minutes or hours, it can take a day or two depending on what's going on in my life but also I'm trying to change and make it look good. Im taking my time on this, so don't get hopes up for a full release anytime. Plus there are hundreds of textures that need remastering.

But, everyone will soon be able to use them Alien Skin with the release of Wind Dry Dock map.

Is there a image size limit for wall textures? I changed the image size to 1024 and it didn't turn out well. Just made the texture bigger. I could just image size the texture again, copy and paste the time texture in and just work in the small square given of the original texture.

Unlike skin textures the wall texture size is proportional to the texture resolution, i.e. if you have a texture that's originaly 512x512 and you change it to 1024x1024 then it will look twice as big ingame. There is a way around this which is to make the texture itlself like a small 8x8 grey square and then on the detail texture parameter you use the actual 1024x1024 texture. Sorry for taking a long hiatus after what happened in 2016 and my laptop dying. But I just got a new laptop for Christmas. The issue that stands in my way is the lack of a disc drive. So I can't install AvP2 onto here and continue the project that I've been wanting to get back to. If anyone has any solutions, that would be appreciated.

Install instructions:
Use official game patch and fan made multiplayer patch 2.4 as these have bug fixes.

His works pretty solid honestly (Though I found someone more ambitious). Just drag into the games main folder, go into the first window with the queen and go to options. Copy and paste that into the "Command-Line" field: -rez AVP207.rez -rez AVP207DLL.rez, then click the: "Always specify these command-line parameters", OK.

Try to go beyond 60fps in this game unless its multiplayer you want since the game has issues going faster than that in the campaign.

Nvidia users go to control panel:
Vertical sync set to Fast if you dont have g sync.
Low latency mode: Ultra
Texture filtering: High quality

AMD it doesnt matter.

Install reshade to the game and use the DX 10/11/12 path.

Turn on anistrophic filtering to 16x in the dg Voodoo control panel, DirectX tab. You need to run as admin to make changes. I recommend you right click, and make that open as admin everytime automatically. Uncheck dg Voodoo Watermark. Check fast video memory access. Choose resolution in this box for supersampling if you can run it. DO NOT use the Antialiasing (MSAA) function or raytracing WILL NOT work.

YOU WILL WANT TO SET THE RESHADE TOGGLE ON OFF SO THAT THE IN GAME MENUS ARE EASIER TO SEE. This is found in reshades tab called "settings". I typically use the page down, or "pgdn" key. Just toggle off for the menu navigation, and on for the 3D render of the game.

DO NOT use the vsync in the game since its double buffered (Glitch). Use your video card driver version instead, and make sure its triple buffered. It shouldnt matter for freesync 2 or g sync users except you still dont want the in game vsync on because it will still effect you.


I bought gigapixel A.I. and im still learning how to convert files. What I would like to do is upscale the games textures with it.

I was hoping post communication with this modder and giving him the workaround to make the game install correctly we would get something beyond a few pictures. He seems more interested in other things and this was probably never intended to actually be available since ive been ignored for some time now.

Im still in the process of another project that takes on the responsibility of more than just one piece of art. There is probably more than one way to skin this cat. Including running the game in a wrapper for DX9, so texmod potentially works.

The modding community is such a mixed bag it inspired me to fix it within a specific timeframe.
