What is matchmaking and disconnections mean?

So i got disconnected mid-game and sometimes I don't even get connect to a team to play a mission. As of today,  I can't get into a game with three people. Should I blame the developers for buggy code?

Any thoughts?Is this an act of mal-practice on part of the game company or is this a circumstance of technology and day to day use of the internet?

It's more likely the host dropping and lack of players just using matchmaking. I certainly never do. I only go on with buddies these days, and just go in with an AI. I don't even bother trying to find randoms on MM.
