Last week Forbes published an interview with Paul WS Anderson about AvP and his advice to anyone who might do a reboot.

Interesting points, at least in his telling of it:

  • He dropped out of the sequel because he didn't want to rush in, whereas Fox wanted something out ASAP.
  • He wanted more flashback sequences, including to WWII (worth noting this was never in the script). He thought the sequel should've had some of its own as well.
  • The setup for AvPR was exactly what he'd planned for his own sequel -- the PredAlien crashes back to Earth, etc. But the overall story wasn't what he'd considered as a follow up, and he thought the sequel was disappointing.
  • The production team on Prey referenced how the Predator targeting system was done in AvP specifically.

Paul seems like a swell guy.

Interesting, but I'm personally glad he didn't come back for another one. I mean he's definitely not my favorite director by any means and no offense to people who do like his work, but he spews just over the top nonsense. Without going down a list there are so many aspects of AvP that are bad, but one that forever will nauseate me is that awful mortifying slow motion run with Scar and Lex following the bomb detonation... embarrassing.

When he's not getting people killed or de-gloved, sure.

If the people that were injured and killed in his productions weren't stuntmen, he would have definitely lost his job.

I wish he did the sequel. no matter what he came up with, it still would have been 1000x better than AVPR.

Preydator

Not a fan of the guy or his work but this is actually a really nice interview!

They smelled like rubber... And looked like it too  ;D

I really do wonder what a Paul W.S. Anderson AVP-R would have looked like; apparently, Lex would have returned if the end of most of the AVP drafts had something to say about it.

Is "de-gloved" not one of the worst words in the English language?

Honestly, as someone who grew up watching the first AVP multiple times as a teenager, I always had a sort of soft spot for the film. Was it great? No. Did it even remotely compare to the other films in both respective franchises (barring Resurrection)? Absolutely not. However, I felt that Anderson tried to do unique things with the story.

Having 3 young predators undergo a trial in a pyramid that their race constructed with the help of an ancient indian tribe was a cool idea. Also, the Pyramid shifted its geometry and architecture which is something quite cool for a crossover film at least. Obviously, the Mummy films with Brandon Frazier already had plenty of things to deal with the Egyptian pyramids so them going in an ancient cavern below the ice in Antarctica was a change of pace. Also, the fight between Scar and the Queen with Lex aiding the fight was honestly cool.

I still wish that Anderson managed to get a bigger budget, and it could have been set off-world on another planet. Having it be rated R could have helped tremendously as well. Anderson had some good ideas, but studio drawback and issues with his script caused problems with the final product.
