Nice.
Did you notice that at the bottom where it gives the release date ,it states that we are getting a vol 2 of the original series. I.e. Nightmare asylum.
Great time to be a fan thats for sure!
Cant wait for this! :D
(I saw that about Vol. 2, god I hope its a fancy pantz hard cover!!!!)

I'm loving that cover. :D
They really seem to be milking the Isolation inspiration cow as much as they can with the way station and such, and I couldn't be happier.
QuoteStokoe, of course, has no intention of bringing a frankfurter to a pulse rifle fight.
Ah ha, Jame Stoke! he's a great artist you should see his work on Godzilla: Half Century War.
Half Century War was fantastic. I'm loving the art on this, and it's nice to see that Dark Horse is still committed to making stand-alone Aliens comics. Also cool to see more of the old comics getting re-released!

Also, on a continuity note, 2295 CE puts us basically right in the middle between A3 and Resurrection, and 70 years past Life and Death. I wonder if we'll ever get far enough ahead to get a comic where the USM are the antagonists?
Oh shit, I just saw this and wet myself. Thanks Dark Horse. You made my day.
I'm really liking this James Stokoe guy! Dark Horse seems to be listening or just hiring the right people for Aliens.
Love the sound of this!!:
"Dead Orbit' mostly takes place on the space station Sphacteria in a rather forgotten and secluded area of space".
Give me dark space, an Alien and space stations all day any day! This is going to be a good one, liking his art too.
Is no-one else getting Ron Cobb and Mobius vibes off the artwork?
Looks great! Really loving all these releases coming our way! Hope it's up to Defiance's standards!
Nailed it @corporalHicks ... definite vibes of Moebius' style and a bit of Cobb thrown in too.
Love it.
I like the combination of Big Chap and Cameron's Alien. (head crest and six fingers)

4 Issue Comic series.
Definite Moebius vibes.
The Comic's illustration appear similar to those of the older comics. Though I agree with the predatory aspect of the xenomorph, I think regarding them as simply dangerous animals doesn't do them justice.
Love the isolated feeling that you get just by looking at the pictures of the previews. Even if the story doesn't hold up at least the art looks detailed and enjoyable. The cover art looks wonderful as well.
Exactly: "Stokoe makes clear in the interview that he's more interested in atmosphere than plot, which does sound like the best way to approach an Alien story."
Except that with a great plot and atmosphere you get a hit like Alien & Aliens. If one is missing, you get an Alien 3 or Alien Res.

Miniseries
After a horrific accident strikes a space station, an engineering officer must use all available tools—a timer, utility kit, and his wits—to survive an attack from the deadliest creature known to man.
Orc Stain creator James Stokoe pens a thrilling and claustrophobic Aliens story: Dead Orbit!
On sale on Alien Day: 4/26/17!
Really looking forward to this.
Yeah I seriously can't wait, this looks and sounds really interesting.
Yeah, I'm pumped for this series. The artwork looks bloody fantastic. Can not wait. :D
Yeah. I totally cannot be more excited for this.
Straight from Defiance and into this.
I checked out Stokoe's other world and he is amazing. So like Moebius.
Fantastic. Glad to hear it's still on track. Really looking forward to giving this one a go! Loving the Moebius and Cobb vibes!
I'm looking forward to this, it's cool to have stand-alone series. The year it takes place is also interesting. 2295 is when W-Y loses their FTL contracts to Ridton, and the USM already exists at this point.
My local comic store just emailed me saying `are you interested in getting this?'
Good lads. They know me well.
Pre-order is now taken care of. Can't wait.
Looks cool, but I I'll hold off until the trade is released.

Interesting scene.
I like that variant. The little robot thing is cool.
I'm getting a retro vibe from it. Reminds me of some of the older covers and comics. It's giving me flashbacks to Labyrinth #0 actually.

Another positive review.
QuoteThe Alien franchise spans all sorts of mediums – films, books, comics, games, etc. – and it has spawned two bonafide masterpieces. There's no disputing the brilliance of the films Alien and Aliens. They are true works of art that every other part of the franchise has struggled to live up to. That is, of course, until James Stokoe unleashed Aliens: Dead Orbit. We're only one issue in, but this already shaping up to be the best work in this universe since the original two films.
Arghhhhhh Release day can't get here quick enough.
QuoteWe're only one issue in, but this already shaping up to be the best work in this universe since the original two films.
Bold claim.
Yeah that is a bold claim. One I hope that's true.
What would you say are the best 5 EU works are?
It's an old article that is in need of a rewrite (and maybe a revision when Defiance and Dead Orbit finish) but here's my old top 10 list.
http://www.avpgalaxy.net/website/articles/top-10-aliens-comics/
What about games and books though Hicks.
I'd say, for me the best of the EU is
Labyrinth
Isolation
AVP classic
Book 2
Defiance ( depends on how it ends though )
Ooohhhh. Isolation and AvP2 would definitely be in there but I'm not sure which comics would make the cut. Probably Labrynth, Destroying Angels and Nightmare (tied alongside the novelization) but I also really dug Berserker.
I still need to read the novelisation of Berserker, based on a recommendation from you and others. It's out soon (the reprint omnibus collection) I believe ?
Yeah, I think it's end of the year. I'll just check.
June. So not that long. Definitely worth the read IMHO.

I will do. I love a good book. Currently listening to the aliens audiobook by ADF. I like the first and am enjoying this. I have the third to read.
Was there any thing back about those manuscripts that we all discussed a while back? ADF's originals.
Unfortunately not. :'( Turned out to be later manuscripts.
Shame about that. Would have been interesting.

The book was a lot better than the comic (which wasn't bad itself).
I enjoyed the comic but it's a bit shallow. I keep hearing from you guys that the novel goes a bit deeper so this excites me.
I did love the cover to the comic a lot though. Shame Killen didn't do the interiors.
I really enjoyed berserker, wish I still had my copy.
I enjoy the comic too, but the novel is the much better version. Those Plunkett covers are some of my very favorite as well.

Seconding this, the comic is cool but the novelization is better, it develops the characters quite a bit more.
This was true of most of the Bantam-era novelizations.
The comic was overly "Aliens comic!" I think the novelization added some great depth and maturity to the concept.
What comes with the reprint. Was it music of the spears?
That's right.
I'll be on that. ;D
How is Music as a book? I couldn't stand the art in the comic. It really took me out of the story.
I remember digging it for being really different. Here's my review from about 8 years ago. http://www.avpgalaxy.net/literature/reviews/aliens-music-of-the-spears/ Don't think I've read it again since then.
I read it quite recently. Wouldn't say I loved it, but like Hicks I really enjoyed how different it was. It's safe to say I've never come across another Alien story like it. Another cheap Aliens rip-off it was not.
Just watched this cool trailer for Dead Orbit.
Really has me excited.

I'd be all over a motion comic of this when it's finished. The atmosphere in that trailer, along with the art and reviews it's getting has me thinking this will be something special.

Same. It just looks f***ing awesome
I remember Halo doing quite a few of them a few years back. I'd love to see Alien branch out a little more and do some, especially with how much I enjoyed this.
Marvel have a few good ones. They weee on Netflix. Not sure if they are still there. It's a really great use of the comics medium.
Defiance would be great as a motion comic also.

I have, I'm not really a fan of the art or the writing for the original comics, or even the coloured rereleases. There was a lot of cringeworthy dialogue and awkward sexual tension that came off as forced and undeveloped to me. The books were quite a bit better IIRC, but yeah... There's also the fact I read these first when I was around 8 or 9 and I'd already seen Alien 3, causing some cognitive disconnect. :P
LOVING the vibes of this. This is my kind of artwork! Alien always had a vein in that Moebius/heavy metal aesthetic.

I'm going to give it another read through this weekend after my Fire and Stone/Life and Death full read through, just to make sure my memory isn't just a little warped, but I swear there was something at least alluded to between Hicks and Newt? Then again I may be mixing it up with her and that android...
On the topic of Dead Orbit, gosh the artwork is so full of detail and clutter and... I love it. Lines, lines and bits sticking out everywhere and it feels so right for the setting. I can't explain it well, it just has that same idea of an "industrial-punk gritty future" that the original Alien movie had.
Dialogue is also top notch with each character easily expressing their personalities through what they say and how they react to each other.
Spoiler
Not a fan of the fake-out with the metal stuff near the end. While it was a nice psychological nod to the biomechanical nature of the Xenomorph it felt like a waste of a panel considering the real deal shows up almost right away. Still... I know that this same thing has happened to me while playing AvP so it really is such a small nitpick in an otherwise great first issue.
What a fantastic first issue. This is an Alien comic on superb form. The artwork was great and i loved the interplay between the characters

That's AWESOME!
I just read #1 and it is fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous comic. Dark Horse have stepped it up in the art department with having the likes of Tristan Jones and James Stokoe getting on the Alien comics.
Obviously, with it being only the first issue there isn't a whole lot to go on but I'm liking the direction and tone of the series so far. It's working very well together. Really looking forward to more.
I won't get my hopes up too high but this is looking to be up there with Book 2 and Labyrinth, as the best Aliens comics there is.
I am confident Stokoe will hit a home run here.
Have you read Half century War, Hicks?
It doesn't ring a bell? What's that?
It's Stokoe's Godzilla mini series. It's is fantastic. It tell's the story of one guys interactions with Godzilla over a 50 year period.
Stokoe smashed it with that one. Check it out. Soooo good
Not really a Godzilla fan, I'm afraid.

That was great.

i really like when the two Bursters interacted and then turned and scarpered
What did you think overall ?
Spoiler
Yeah the bit with the bursters was great. It seem like everyone but Wassy is dead, but how it's all going to pan out - looking forward to finding out.
Spoiler
yeah. I have no idea where this is going but i like it. Looks like the twin Aliens are taking Wassy to cocoon him. I wonder if with have any egg morphing going on.
Spoiler
Dunno. Wouldn't surprise me if a Queen came out of the woman host.

we have already seen the Alien from the woman. The Ridge headed one from issue one. These two in issue 2 have smooth heads.

i was just checking them out. There is a clear difference in the head design if you look. I see what you mean though. They arnt as smooth as the traditional design.
I could be way of mark though.
Another great issue! Loving this story, its making up for how disappointing defiance has become.
The chestburster design is fantastic.
Story started a lil by the numbers but im really enjoying the way its unfolding. I cant wait for issue 3 ;D

I honesty think we could be getting the best Aliens comic ever, with this series. If the next two issues maintain the level of quality the first two have then i think, for me, it will have that title.
That chestburster scene was fantastic, like twin brothers meeting and interacting for the first time after birth. Beautifully horrifying. I do wonder why this crew even bothers to try and save these three, what with all their skin removed it's better to just mercifully kill them. But still great stuff. :)

I just figured that the medical science was far enough forward that they would be treatable.
Yeah I wouldn't have thought they were terminal.
Finally got around to reading issue #2, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Stokoe's art really fits the mood, and it's refeshing to get something close to a 'normal' Aliens story after all the recent crossovers. Can't wait for #3!
I have to say that that one sequence was pretty brutal and fantastically drawn. Im really loving it :)
I am really hoping that we get a fancy pants edition of this book.
Stokoe's art is so detailed it needs the larger format.
I have his Godzilla book in a fancy pants and it is beautiful.
I just want fancy pants hardback editions of everything now.
 fancy pants are the way.
i'm not really a fan of paperbacks since it's just one part
but i couldn't help myself, this is so good
Sucky news. Issue 3 has been pushed back to the 19th July from this wednesday and Issue 4 is 9th August from 28th July.
Damn it.
I guess it's understandable with Stokoe doing everything. Looking forward to it, either way.
I'm disappointed with the delay but I can understand considering he's wearing most of the hats on this. I'll (im)patiently wait for more!
Dont get me wrong. As long as the next two issues are as good as the first two them i dont mind the wait.
Stokoe is a slow worker when it comes to doing his own work. Just look at Orc Stain ( great by the way ). It has only 7 issues in as many years. I did kind of think that all 4 issues on schedule would be amazing.
It's a shame they didn't do the same with Defiance. I would've rather waited and had Tristan do the whole thing.
Lotta disrespect for the other artists who worked on that series in this thread. Tristan's stuff might've been the best, but there was good stuff by the other artists as well.
No disrespect intended. Their work was great. It's just Tristan's art was on another level.
Plus it would've given it some consistency. I didn't like that it kept changing.
Yeah its not disrespectful to want the same artist to complete. What he started.
I for one hate it when you have fill in artists. It ruins the flow of the story for me. Seen as comics are also a visual medium.
Would have been more than happy for Defiance to be Bi-monthly.
The others were good artists, especially Stephen Thompson, but i like a single vision when i read comics.
I would've preferred it to. I remember the old Colonial Marines series suffering in that regard. But it seems some people are making it out to be worse than it actually is. Defiance had pretty good quality throughout the run.
Hopefully my adoration for Tristans work doesn't come off as disrespectful to the other artists. I agree that all the art on the Defiance run was pretty great.

Agreed. It was great quality throughout. O think issues 1 through 7 are awesome. It seemed to meander from 8 to 12. Those last five issues stopped it from being an amazing series overall. For me. Still prob one of the beat Aliens series we have. The three leads were very good.

No worries! Thanks, looks great. Can't wait to pick it up!
Pretty great issue, it all feels maybe a little too familiar but thats just being picky. Great art and story, really feels like it fits in the universe created by the first film. Some really nice looking panels with the creatures. Is this only 4 issues? Not sure why i thought it would be 5, wishful thinking.
I hope DH announces another alien series soon. I need something to hold onto after this series ends lol.
Can't wait to get my hand on this! I'm also hoping DH announces some new series soon. Randy said on Facebook that there would be more Aliens and Predator coming, so fingers crossed.
I am confident that well will get some announcements for new series' at San Diego Comic Con.

I was hoping so as well, but now the lack of news has me a bit discouraged.
Still crossing my fingers that we'll hear something before the weekend is over.
There's the Titan Books panel later today, so we may still get some novels announced. If not, there's usually announcements around October a bit later.
Yeah hopefully titan has something to announce.
Still was hoping DH would announce something Aliens with Tristan attached. Oh well maybe october then.
Hoping a summary or video of the panel turns up.

Lol. Thanks, Russ.
A very atmospheric issue 3. I'm still amazed at how Stokoe can tell so much with hardly any dialogue, I guess that might be a huge benefit of being both the author and the artist.
That's ok, the quality has been so high I don't mind some delays.
Another slip. New release date for issue 4 is 6 September.
http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/30-289/Aliens-Dead-Orbit-4
I have faith thag issue 4 will be great, as were the other 3 issues, so it will be worth the wait.
That's a shame but I can understand why he might need more time. After all, doing pretty much everything on the series can't be easy.
Yeah. He does pretty much all of it. He has said in interviews that he is really anal about detail and story so i van also imagine that he has had to redo bits. He did thats a bit on His Godzilla series.
At the end pf the day. I trust in Stokoe to deliver and if a delay is needed then im happy
Stokoe's artwork is so beautifully ugly. It's not always anatomically correct or precise but it has such a unique style to it (whilst evoking Moebius) that it just fits the macabre Giger/Alien imagery so well.
Not sure i would describe it quite the same way as you have Prez but i do agree with te moebius vibe.
What i love about Stokoe's work is that eveything on the page helps to serve the story telling. I know that's what is always the intent with comics but i think that is sometimes not the case. It helps because he does everything so we get an unfiltered vision from him. A lot of time when i read comics i see great pictures and read sometimes good stories but they dont always meld very well. His work just flows as one natural piece. Even the Onomatopoeia that Stokoe puts into the panels helps set the scene and does not look out of place like a word just stamped on the page. Those words are part of the art.
I really am so happy that we have this series from him. Even though it is essential a run of the mill yarn that we have seen many times before it is just excecuted so well that i dont care.

I'm really keen to see how this one all comes together. I really hope they're not having really major problems with this issue.
I would say it is down to Stokoe. He is a notorious perfectionist.
His own creator owned series, Orc Stain, only has 7 issues. The gaps between some of those 7 were a year and more. No exaggeration.
I'm confident it will be worth it.
Aww come on
Being quintessentially British I'm not one to usually complain, but these continually changing release dates are starting to test my resolve.
When did the last issue come out? Was it way back on Alien Day?
Nah, we had one later than that. July.
December 13 is actually officially official.

Looking good! I think we're on track for an actual release! :P
Lol. Looking to be a consistently brilliant series also.
I'm looking forward to giving it a full read through. Seeing how it all holds up as a complete story.
Me too. I may read 1 2 and 3 just before moving into 4.
I'll definietly have to refresh myself on the first three issues before this comes out.
do you buy the trades or read digitally? i don't really buy the physical copy till the entire volume releases together
I pre-order the single issues to support the book and get the digital on release. I only buy larger trades like the Fire and Stone collection or Omnibus collections for older books.
I buy digital on morning of release and then the trade if I like the book. Then I upgrade to what ever Hardcover comes out.

Yeah, I'm pretty much doing the same now too. I'm too impatient to wait for the trades so I read the singles and then buy the collected. I was going to wait for for the hardback for Life and Death but without any announcement, I've started buying the trades instead. If they do a fancy pants hardback edition, I'll get that too.
Tempted to get the trade of this, just because of the glowing reviews y'all have been giving it.
Give it a shot Huda. It's great.
Yeah, I'm not really a comics guy, but I like the look of the art in this and I don't think I've seen anyone say a single bad thing about it in this thread.
I am really hoping for a fancy pants of this book.
I have a fancy pants of Stokoe's Godzilla and it's an awesome book ( although it's IDW ).
Darkhorse, im sure, would have a few extras to put in there. Perhaps Stokoe's orignal fan comics of Aliens he sketched up. Those images are great and would be good to have them in there. Plus his art deserves the larger format.

I do feel guilty about not pre ordering the physical singles but I have not the time to pick them up or space to keep collecting. Digital is so much more convenient for me. It's a shame that digital sales are not factored into the success of a book. It's all about the pre orders :-\

My top comics are pretty standard: Books I and II, Destroying Angels, etc. I'm pretty fond of Stronghold, and as far as recent stuff the Aliens arc of Fire and Stone was pretty interesting.

I do think Stronghold is underrated. I really enjoy Manhke's art in that one.
I enjoyed Stronghold too. My only issue with it was despite the story, it ended (not the end with Jeri) on a note that deified one of the main driving points of the story.
I didn't really rate Stronghold for a long time but on re-reading last year it's far and away among the best.

Refresh my memory. It's been a while. I just remember the main beats and that when I re read it, like SM, it was a hell of a lot better than I once thought.
There was this big drive about how wrong Nordling (I think that's his name?) is in the way he treats his synth characters. And then the last bit with get with our heroes is one of them pretty much just going "oh well, they weren't even real anyway".
Lol oh yeah. I vaguely remember. Ill have to re read it.

^Yeah, I don't have to wonder how it ends now.
Lol. I realised very quickly and didn't read on. Just went to the last paragraph.
Soooo. Just read #4. In fact I read 1 through 4.
Even though I hated having to, the wait was worth it. Such a great series all round. For me it is tied with Labyrinth as best Alien comic to date. Although the story is run of the mill, Stokoe is such a great story teller that the usual tropes are welcome when rendered by him. The art is amazing. Such rich atmosphere throughout.
The ending is worthy of the Alien universe. I am really happy with this issue and the series as a whole. I pray this gets a fancy pants edition release.
Wow what an amazing series! So good I had to register on this forum just to gush about it haha! This last issue was certainly worth the wait and ended stronger than the majority of EU stories. I think this is possibly the best 4 issue Aliens series ever (Destroying Angels is the only one I can think of that comes close). The art had me endlessly staring at panels while the story kept me intrigued throughout. Thank you James Stokoe!

Spoiler
While I get why they did it, and it is thematically appropriate, the ending felt like I had just run full tilt into a brick wall.
Still...
A great and pessimistic look into the Aliens Universe. Totally recommend y'all read this series if you haven't already.
@russ840 indeed! @Kurai I must respectfully disagree the ending was intense, satisfying and as dark as the carapace of a xenomorph. An equally strong finish to a superb series. It'd be cool to get a story of where that ragtag ship came from though!

It's a trait of Stokoe's to build the world so well that you want to explore it. Have you read any of his other material?
I would love a prequel to this.
I'd love a Stokoe AVP.
I would also welcome a prequel.
Did you read it yet Ultra ?
Not fully, but I did thumb through on digital last night.
Something to look forward to then mate.
@russ840 I hadn't heard of Stokoe prior to this series but I've been eyeing his Godzilla story on Amazon as of late. I'm hooked by the sheer amount of tiny details his artwork entails as well as his story telling prowess. Very impressive. I'd be overjoyed if he returns for more stories in the Aliens, Predator or AVP universe.
Godzilla Half Century War is amazing. I got the Oversized Hardcover because his art has such detail I didn't think the smaller pages would serve it best. I was not disappointed. I am currently reading his early comic called Wonton Soup.
Orc Stain is another of his work but there is only 7 issues and the 8 is no where in sight. But great stuff none the less.
If you can, get the hardcover of his Godzilla. It's on EBay, new, for around £25.
Nice! Thanks for the tip Russ!
Yikes! This Disney acquisition most likely means Marvel will soon get Aliens, Predator and AVP licenses. Hopefully Dead Orbit isn't the last Dark Horse Aliens comic we see. I'd assume There's most likely a set term (couple of years give or take) in the licensing agreement and I doubt Disney would breach that, but Dark Horse now has a finite time to publish new material. It's a shame because Dead Orbit, Defiance, and Life and Death were all solid entries (all of which I also want sequels to).
Great finale to a great series.
And sadly with the big news of the Disney buyout I think this may very well be one of the very last every Dark Horse published Alien comics.

Until the license is up for renewal there won't be any problems with Dark Horse going about business as usual with Aliens, plus we have word of Dust to Dust on the way. So keep your hopes up. :)
I read the final issue this morning. In short, I really enjoyed the series. Great artwork by Stoakes. Some heavily Alien and Isolation vibes (with an Alien 3 reference thrown in there!). I didn't think the story broke any new ground but I loved the bleakness of it. Definitely one of my favorite series.
Yeah. The story is not anything original but the content is so well executed it makes the series, for me, the best thing, along with Isolation, released as part of the Alien universe in years.
Just read issue #4. It was really good, but I'll need to read the whole thing together because I had forgotten a but of what was going on. Stokoe really killed it on the art, especially how run-down the station looked. The bleak ending was refreshing, and I would love a prequel about the ship the aliens arrived on. More stories in that general time period would be cool, too. I think this is set the year WY loses it's FTL contracts, so the general decay of everything was cool.

It reads really well together.
Was is it, 100 years after Aliens/Alien 3 ? Roughly.
A prequel would be good. The crew came to the conclusion that the ship the Aliens came on was a salvage ship so that would be a cool, working class, crew to follow the exploits of and see how they came across the creature.
Yeah, 2293, I think.
Close. 2295. Just check th first issue. So a little over 100 years. A good time period to explore. Have we had many Alien stories set there ?
Another glowing review I found.

One thing I'm wondering now. I don't remember Dark Horse resoliciting the TPB of this series. It was originally solicited for Nov. Obviously the delays prevent that. Dark Horse have it listed as March 21st now, I think, definitely March. Usually delays mean the book is resolicited. Did I miss that ?

For a moment I thought the AvP SNES game was set in that time period, but I checked and it takes place in 2493. If I remember right, that's still the "latest" point we've seen in the timeline to date.
Not quite, Rage War is set in 2692 or something like that.
I will give another shot to rage wars. Ill stick with it. That is 500 years on from Aliens/Alien3.
Is there any mention of te United Systems Military in that series.
No mention of the USM, but Sea of Sorrows does explain what happened to them. Basically they fell apart after the Auriga trashed Earth and that allowed WY to make a comeback.
Ah yes. I remember that. That was no where near as far forward as rage wars was it ?
SoS was 2490, so after Res but about 200 years before Rage War.
Just read issue 4, after not looking at issue 3 since it came out. Had to read it a couple of times to follow the jumping around narrative. As an issue on its own it's nothing spectacular, but a good climax to a very solid series.
Despite the 'typo' in the last page. ;D
You mean the countdown? According to the countdown, all the present-time events of the first issue take about 7 seconds according to the second issue.
I meant the time on the last page jumps from 4:02:43 to 4:02:47.
The timers are curious in that they don't really follow on the surface but I think they're for different things. I really need to study them more closely. The basic plot seems to be all about Wassy going EVA to grab a stash of smokes.

Yeah, that's what I meant by the countdown.
QuoteThe basic plot seems to be all about Wassy going EVA to grab a stash of smokes.
 He had to get from observation to life support.
I am curious about that timer countdown on the last page.
Stokoe does all his own lettering so I can't see it being a mistake. He is really anal. Must mean something.
I'm can't work out how it's anything other than a mistake. The previous panel goes:
4:02:52
4:02:51
4:02:50
4:02:49
Then last page goes:
4:02:43
4:02:47
4:02:46
etc.
I think 4:02:43 was supposed to be 4:02:48.
QuoteHe had to get from observation to life support.
Ironically to get smokes. The first issue shows an empty pack.
Unsure if joking. I don't think it was for smokes.
Spoiler
The life support module was capable of functioning as a lifeboat while they waited for rescue. The way I read it was the plan was to use the charges to blow the unit away from the station but his little trick with the oxygen ruined that plan.
Spoiler
Yeah but he had to get the darts too. ;D

He did seem rather disappointed when he ran out at the beginning..
Something else I just noticed- the acid from Aliens stump causes the oxygen explosion, but the next page it's got two arms as it floats away.
Indeed it does.
Aliens have never been shown to regenerate before ::)

I am - the issue in the hive is possibly the best single issue of any Aliens comic, the art is Beauvais-level good, and the writing is generally pretty good. But it falls away towards the end when it's revealed Church is just another nut. On more recent readings I can't help but think it was a great opportunity to turn convention on its head.
And Crespi suffers from 'believing the last thing he was told'itis.
I had this idea that Scott should adapt Labyrinth into a covenant sequel. The covenant could replace the station for the comic and David could be Church. His flash backs could be to his time between Prometheus and covenant. He could be experimenting with the colonists and what not. Some he has awoken could be the parallels to Crespi and the female character. That sort of thing.
I love all of Labyrinth but I do agree that Church didn't have to be so looney at the end. I would have played the story out the same way but had church be a lot more level headed and make him almost justified.
I like that idea of Covenant 2 being a semi adapt of Labyrinth

Yeah, people rave about that one, but if you take out the absolutely stellar flashback, I honestly think the rest is pretty mediocre, which is a big shame.
I can't agree there. I love all of Church's findings that he reveals to Crespi. I love the grim ending. I love the art but for me art is such an important element. Good art elevates a comic massively for me. Added to that a well written piece, Then I am a happy puppy.
The flashback is truly awesome.
The major downfall when I originally read it was what the hell was Church doing with the bodies? It was just too vague.
That never really bothered me.
To be honest, I'd quite like a follow up.
I always thought they intended a follow up, especially after the blink and you'll miss it Reference in the Colonial Marines comics

Is there anything interesting in there?
Not really.
Space Jockies at the end.
Are they 8ft dudes with pale skin ? :D
Nah. Oddly enough they looked a little goofy.
They show up in a shrooms hallucination at one point, and thne yeah, they blow up the planet or something. It's really weird.
It's a shame too, we'll never get another graphic adventure game in that vein ever again.

Great review dude. Let's hope a fancy pants follows the Paperback. The art will be awesome oversized.
On the subject of the art. I have managed to procure the original art page of the Aliens abducting Wassy. It's the page near the end of issue 2. Should be with me in a few days. I'll post it up if anyone is interested.
I'll steer clear then. Actually quite looking forward to reading the comic, given it's reception.
I think with this one spoilers don't really hinder anything. There aren't really any surprised to be had in it, it all plays pretty straightforward. It is the mood of the piece and the gorgeous artwork that really make it what it is.
So I got a page of the original art work from issue 2. It's awesome.
I cant upload a pic though as my file is too large.
Email it to me and I'll put it on Imgur. corporalhicks - at -avpgalaxy.net

Read the final issue last night and while it was a quick ending, the wait probably didn't help, it was a spot on ending for the series.
I think Ill have to get a trade for the artwork from the original pitch, which looks like it could have been a completely different story

That's what I was getting at. They adapted his original, unmade script for the second film as a comic.
Sorry. I meant to Write Robocop 3 in my post.
I might be completely wrong but I seem to remember something about that as well
I think they rolled some of his ideas for that into the comic adaptation of the second film script.
Oh ok. Have you read it? I know you are not into comics as a rule.
No, I just know of it through my love of the first two films :)
I think I'll check them out.
I do love the first movie. I think I need to rewatch the second.
As I just said over in the Last Movie You Watched thread, it's not as good as the first, but I've always felt like it's a much more entertaining action movie than most people give it credit for.
Is the second one, the one with the Nuke drug?

I only know because it got it for my brother for Christmas. You'll find it on amazon
So I only bought the first issue of this series. Did the rest play out fairly well? Is it worth getting the TPB?
Depends if liked the first one.
More of the same huh?
It didn't really seem to catch me. Mind you, I do love zany intricate stuff, but only if it tells a part of the story. As an example Geoff Darrow's and Frank Miller's Hard Boiled graphic novel was full of intricate illustrations, where 1 illustration may have a 100 separate things happening in it, but all of those things add to the story. In Dead Orbit, I just found that the illustrator couldn't stop his pen. Maybe if I see this in bound format, it will read better? Sigh... Yeah, I'll buy it. I'm a slave. ::)
Nah my point was more, if you didn't care for issue 1, don't waste your money and time on the rest. I found the intricate style a refreshing change from the less detailed stuff in Life & Death.
Indeed. I loved that Dead Orbit was immensely detailed. It added to the immersion imho.
I have to read this now. How does it compare to Salvation (give me the movie version now), Labyrinth (I never want to see a movie of this or I'll blow chunks), and Bezerker??
I'd put DO on a par with all those series.
For me it's tied with Labyrinth as best Aliens comic.

Keep up the good work gentleman ;D
Great listen guys! This series was superb! Hopefully Dust to Dust turns out just as good. I do think everyone lowballed the series but I tend to automatically think of scores as a grade and 8 out of 10 or 80% is a B minus, 7.5 would be a solid (average) C and Xenomorphine's 6.5 would equate to a D (below average) I thought this story was literally Grade A and thus the acceptable minimum score should be 9 out of 10. But to each their own! The podcasts that focus on the expanded universe tend to be my favorites so please keep them coming. Cheers!
Been looking forward to this podcast and it didn't disappoint. Great listen lads.
F**king loved this comic. The wait between issue 3 and 4 was unbearable. This is just what the series needed in my opinion, a stripped down story about surviving a xenomorph and a desperate attempt to get the last packet of cigarettes. Incredible!
Loved Wassy and some of the shots of the alien where beautiful. The aliens in life and death didn't do it for me but Stokoe got it right. Just like Tristan in defiance. That final fight on the hull of the station was just the best thing ever and the ending.....perfect.
More of this please Dark Horse.
My only problem now is that Dead Orbit has worked its way into my top 5 Aliens comics of all time. Which means one of my beloved is being relegated to number 6. I mean honestly, how do you decided between Dead Orbit and say........Lovesick ;D

Unknown at this point. All that we know is there is some material which details Stokoe's Original pitch for the comic, including some artwork of that pitch.
Ill wait until I find out what's in it before I decide to get it.
I knew about bits from his original pitch, just wanted to know if there was more
Nothing's been announced yet.
I'll definitely be picking up the collection. The reception the story's received made me gutted I missed the individual issues, and the fact there's anything bonus in there at all just sweetens the deal.
You're spared the delays, so that's a plus.
Dropped into my local comic store to pick up Predator: Hunters today and asked them to pre-order Dead Orbit for me.

This was the podcast where someone asked for a suggestion for "predator day" right?
Here's my suggestion: January 7th because only 1/7 commandos survived.

Fear not! There's a cover gallery!
How much else is te Hicks?
The pitch artwork and some notes on them.
Cool man.
So I ended up buying this. I find this story to be a mixed bag. Firstly, it is isolated from the core story so it has no context. It stands alone entirely. Some like this, others, not so much. I am among the latter, but that does not bear much impact on the overall tale. There were many moments which echoed the major films. From an Alien popping up out of the floor (as per Hudson's fate), to life-pods frying people (Covenant) upon awaking, to other eye roll inducing cliched moments. Perhaps what bothered me the most were the often caricatured expressions of the characters. That always takes me out of the horror of the moment when the characters look like cartoons or caricatures. The story jumped a lot also, and I often found the characters to be repeating the exact same phrases which was odd. HGK! anyone?
That aside, the story is interesting. Perhaps of all of the Aliens comics ever put out, this was the one that felt the closest to Walt Simonson's Alien: The Illustrated Story which is a good thing. I do like that Dark Horse allowed someone to just run with their own unique take on an Alien story in its entirety. It is a completely singular vision of the author artist and that is cool. I will have to give this book more thought. Perhaps it will grow on me over time.
I got this in the mail on Tuesday and read through it in one sitting on Wednesday.
On the whole I was kind of underwhelmed. I think the comic spent just a little too much time showing people say "HGK!" over and over rather than actual meaningful content. The art style was a little hit-or-miss for me - the environments were detailed (which I liked) but they were almost a bit *too* "busy", and I didn't care much for the character designs.
It also took me a moment at first to figure out when the story was jumping from the "present" to the "past" - I think something in the corner of the page for each transition saying "NOW" and "THEN" to make it clearer wouldn't have been amiss.
I don't regret reading it at all; the art style was unique and the overall story was neat (and the way each of the Aliens was defeated was clever without being unrealistic), but it's certainly not my favorite Aliens comic of all time.
My copies arrived today.
I would really like the original pitch finished and published.
Finally picked up the TPB today. I would love to see the original pitch turned into a full blown series. Using Wey-Yu mercs to "contain" outbreaks seems more plausible than having colonial marines constantly encountering the creatures. Still love the story we got though!
Just bought it today, will start reading it soon.
Edit: punched through it in one sitting: great comic. Contrary to many I prefer the more claustrophobic experience over the Colonial Marine experience which we've got plenty of and most of them missed the mark IMO by simply repeating what Aliens did but less subtly structured.
The structure of the comic, going back and forth, helps the story a great deal in terms of tension and drama. Love how Stokoe used the enviroment halfway the story and it is both horror and terror.
Would certainly like to see more comics in this vein.
I think the toing and froing between then and now, really adds to the re-read value.
Agreed! And Stokoe did a great job of using visual cues conveying a plausible memory trigger for Wassy which further smooths the narrative transition to the past. Really well done comic series. It seems Dark Horse is really upping the caliber on their stories and I hope that trend continues.

Yeah, that was something that I think worked really well too. I think it got a little confusing with the action in the fourth issue but a few re-reads sorted the order of events for me.
Indeed I've also found re-reads further smooth the present to past transitions. I don't think we've ever seen an Aliens story that jumped between past and present like that (The closest may be Isolation with its data logs backstory) which is yet another reason this story stands out.
Hot diggity damn that was good. This team should work on all future comics.
Spoiler
Were Wassy and Hassan cocooned to be used later as a food source, or was Hassan being Brett-morphed? Wasn't sure since there was no queen laying eggs.
Check this out.
Fancy pants seems to be on the horizon

Superb
Excellent, it deserves it.
I need to upgrade from my floppies, so this is cool.
Love the new cover. The list of extras sound good as well.
For the first time since it came out, I'm glad I never got the existing trade ;D
I can't say I was expecting that but damn if I'm not going to pick that up too!
I wonder if we'll ever see that AvP hard-back.
I wonder if this will include any additional bonus stuff, beyond what we got in the softback tpb?
Ill be getting it anyway lmao

It does mate.
It has a section on Stokoe's artwork process along with high res scans of the original art work pencils ( which I own a page of lol )
An all new cover and hopfully more detail on the original pitch

Well there was an official advert in he Terminator Hardcover a while back. I think we will get it for the 30th anniversary of the idea for the comic at dark horse. Either late 2019 or early 2020.

Noice! Sold.
Well, more sold.
I am almost certain that this will be the same size as the 'Original Comic Series' format as well.
No quotes littered on Dead Orbit, no longer.
Excuse my ignorance, what do you mean Old One ?
I dislike quotes on cases or books, exceptions though are quotes from the text itself.
Got ya. Yeah. Quotes are annoying on the cover. Better on the back.

Testify
They definitely cheapen the book. They make it look like a paper-back. Which it is...
Now, The Cold Forge hardback please.
Wait what? That's not even a comic yet...
I do not want it as a comic, just a hardback leather bound version of the novel.
Cool. Unlikely, but cool.
If one deserves it, it's it.
I agree
Dead Orbit's fantastic.
It is.
Here is a link to some pics of an advanced copy of the fancy pants Hardcover.
Really looking forward to this and nice to see the uncoloured pages in there.

I can never seem to upload pictures. I am useless at this sort of thing lol.
Nice.
I take it the uncoloured stuff is WIP?
WIP ? Work in progress ?
Yeah it's the inked pages before Stokoe colours them.
I am hoping the page that I own is included as well. Will be nice to see the page next to it published.

Nice one dude.
I think this may be an instance where keeping the TPB, as well, is a good idea. I am under the impression that the 'original pitch' content from the Trade is not included here.
Why?
No real evidence beyond there being no mention of it in the books description. The page count is 120 which is only 16 pages more than the trade but one of the features for this release is the uncoloured art. Which I would imagine will easily take up that 16 pages. It talks like it includes a lot.
Just an assumption really. Be nice if it is inclusive of everything.

I sincerely hope not, because one of the reasons I've held off buying this until now is the assumption this would include everything.
Having said all that. The product description does say 'bonus process material' ( I missed that ) so hopfully im wrong and it's included.
Hope so, because like Huda, thats why ive been holding off too ol
Sorry everyone. Don't listen to me. I didn't mean to give false info.
Like I say. It's just an assumption because I have seen that sort of thing before with multiple format releases. There is no actual evidence to support it.
http://fanbasepress.com/index.php/press/reviews/item/9884-aliens-dead-orbit-advance-hardcover-review
Hard cover review. Not read it yet.
Skim-read it, seems to just be a review of the story. Couldn't see anything about the actual content of the hardback.
I can confirm that all the content from the Trade is in the Hardcover.
Anything new?
Only skimmed but the unlinked pages appear to be the only addition. I'll have to have a proper look later.
So I have been through the Fancy pants and the only additions to the standard trade are the uncoloured pages, of which there are 7 and all four of the issue covers in the gallery as opposed to only issues 3 and 4 which the trade featured.
Of the uncoloured art pages, one is the pencils of the new cover for this collection and the other 6 are pages from the final issue. I was hoping the page that I own would be in here but its not which is a shame.
All content from the trade is otherwise here. Unchanged.
One extra note.
The countdown in the final 2 pages of the story has been fixed and now makes sense.
The art error(?) with the Alien's arm, late in the story, remains untouched.
This collection is definitely the best way to experience this comic. The oversized pages really do Stokoe's work justice.

That art error was in Dust to Dust (the one arm-less Xeno) not Dead Orbit.
There's one in Dead Orbit too. Couple of panels when the final Alien is blasted into space it regains it's previously missing right arm.

Oooooh!! I never noticed that. Thanks for this. Going to have a squiz at my trade version now.
Not saying this is the case but I remember Ridley saying how the crushed Protomorph in Covenant would've regrown it's torso or something ridiculous like that.
I think he said it would completely reform.
They can heal quick, but seriously...
Some of his ideas... I tell yah. The man is a visionary but he is so random and without logic sometimes.
I'm in the process of re-reading this because it didn't do a whole lot for me the first time around... and I'm still not exactly feeling it. I think the thing that makes me roll my eyes the hardest is the "HGK! HGK!" (or "HEF. HEF. HEF.") thing over and over throughout the book, it overstays its welcome almost immediately. And the way Stokoe draws faces reminds me of the band Gorillaz, and that's not exactly a good thing.
I'd actually agree with that. I do appreciate the simple story told well, the detail in the artwork and the nice atmosphere generated, but Xenomrph's points stand with mine as well.
Though I actually enjoyed it a bit more probably, but I don't find it perfect and enjoy other comics a lot more. Still, IMO it's better than half of Fire and Stone, all of Life and Death and we'll see how the new Amanda stuff goes...
For me it is the best comic series, on par with Nightmare Asylum and Labyrinth.
Ya I think it's hands down the best Aliens comic. Got the new hardcover and I love it! The chestburster scene looks so good with the oversized format. Stokoe draws a flawless chestburster.
Dead Orbit's the best.

Lol quit fussing over Stokoe's go to onomatopoeia
Curious, what is HGK?
It's the sound a person makes when they're choking.
Or running.
Or checking their bank account online.
Or literally anything, based on how heavily Stokoe uses it.
I really don't get why it bothers people. They are panting. It happens.
HGK...is like your opinion, man.
Didn't bother me at all, but I did get a chuckle from Xenomrph's reaction.
Dead "HGK" Orbit is excellent regardless!

I'd have been less bothered by it if it was used more sparingly, it just got distracting and dragged the whole thing down.
Yeah i never even noticed it.
Ok I see what you meant know. This stuff? Yea, a bit annoying.

^ That.
If that's the sound of panting I guess it's ok lol. How many pages did it last though?, I need to give that TPB a 2nd read some day.
Sounds like the first carrier in Covenant.

It goes on for pages sometimes. Like I said, over 100 times in the first two issues.
Hahahaha. They were dragging a carrier along with them?
I read both this and Dust to Dust last night, and I gotta say -- I loved this dude's artwork, especially his work on Godzilla, very cool stuff. In fact it's probably the closest we'll ever get to an Aliens manga, because his art echoes that of Katsuhiro Otomo and Masamune Shirow.
Speaking of which I loved how he revealed his pitch to Dark Horse with the Colonial Marines navigating that labyrinth complex during a Xenomorph outbreak. That had the potential to be an even crazier piece of work.

Also this thread needs more "HGK HGK HGK".
What happened to that labyrinth? Where can one see that?

Reminded me of Tezuku, but those guys work too.

In the bonus content to the paperback. He includes some pages of finished art and talks about the process of said pieces. The facility that this all took place in was supposed to be large and extremely elaborate hence the term 'labyrinth', made worse by an earthquake that presumably released their Xeno captives.

I can believe it.
I'd love Stokoe to come back and do another comic based on his original pitch.
I lap his work up. Has any read Wonton Soup. It has some great little Alien/s references in it.
It follow two space truckers that have chef related adventures. It nuts.
Bringing it back because you should all watch it:
Just ordered the deluxe hardcover version of this, since it was easily my favorite of the Dark Horse comics in recent years. Wanted to make sure I got it before it goes out of print in light of the recent Marvel news.

The likely hood is that Marvel will reprint all the Dark Horse stuff.
But you made the right choice because Marvel's collected editions quality is no where near Dark Horse's level. And at an excellent price point.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll get a reprint at some point under the Marvel label. But the DH hardcover for this one, with all the backup bonus material, just looks so nice. And it is definitely my favorite of the Aliens stories post-Dark Horse's most recent continuity reboot, so I want this one for my shelf for sure.
