Title: First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!
Post by: Corporal Hicks on Mar 31, 2016, 01:37:30 PM

Updated 01/04/2016 – I have added another 2 pictures to the gallery below. Thanks to Stolen for the close up one.

Updated 02/04/2016 – Added another one.

We have our first on location pictures of Alien: Covenant! Filming is due to start on Alien: Covenant in the next week or so and news of the crew moving into Fiordland National Park in New Zealand has been cropping up on social media over the last few weeks. Now, we finally have our first look at what’s going on in Fiordland!

First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!

First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!

These pictures (more below) were taken in front of Mitre Peak, an iconic mountain in the South of New Zealand. They are constructing what would appear to be a spaceship (possibly the Covenant?). In its current state it’s hard to tell for certain what exactly it might be though. Is it just some generic section of the hull or might it be an airlock?

Thanks to Stolen for this one.

In related news, a recent article (that has since been removed from the website) posted by the Otago Daily Times confirmed that Alien: Covenant would be filming in the Te Anau region of South New Zealand (thanks to Stolen for the tip!):

“Details of exactly what is being filmed, how many people are involved and how long filming will take are shrouded in mystery, but it has been confirmed scenes for Alien: Covenant are at present being shot in the Te Anau-Milford Sound area.

A company spokesman, who declined to be named, said 13 trucks fitted out as camera, make-up, wardrobe and office trucks had been hired ''for a few weeks”. Most were already in Fiordland, with the rest on their way south. They were being used for Alien: Covenant scenes, he said.

He knew Fiordland was to be a location for Alien: Covenant and had heard some filming had begun. Scouts had been scoping locations for the past six to eight weeks, he said. ''I know Fiordland is ideally suited to their needs. It is a grand-scale production … which will use Fiordland’s natural scenery overlaid with special effects.”

I'm getting a very "Ron Cobb" vibe from that partial spaceship/dropship prop.  ;D

It's hard to tell exactly from the low-res photo but it looks kinda weathered and battered, like something that belongs in the Alien universe.

Here are a few old Ron Cobb designs. Notice the rounded and angled surfaces of the white spacecraft as well as the red banding that we can see on the prop as well. The prop in the photo could very likely be a Wayne Haag design who has recently been praising Cobb's work.

I really hope these nature bits are for earth scenes or scenes of an earth-like planet. Avatar was fine but i'd rather we not get something similar for the engineer paradise. I'm personally hoping we get something more similar to Giger's bio mechanoid landscapes. A dark world bio modified to fit the needs of alien geneticists who create living ships and weapons. Keeping my fingers crossed!

It definitely looks Cobb inspired. I'm hoping Haag might comment on it later. Be nice to know if he designed the Covenant.

More than anything, this is what I hope to see in the film.

There must be some facilities or temples... Alien never was exterior movie! So we ll possibly see more of
Engineers technology or technology of some other creature in those temples or facilities? Gigeresque landscapes and
designs always were a key part of this franchise (and I only count first two and maybe third movie), so I m 100% sure that
we ll have huge Gigeresque or Gutalin (and maybe someone new) designs all over the movie.

By the look of ship (airlock) on this photos, it seems like it crashed on that Planet (Paradise),
or thats not Covenant at all...?

We know that in the past Scott had his people design small exterior sections of the ships in 1:1 scale.  I would think the images we've seen represent just such a small section of a much larger vessel.  But if you consider the Nostromo to be small, then this would probably be small by your standards as well.

Maybe the Covenant stay in orbit and this one makes the connection with the planet!

Post by: Perfect-Organism on Mar 31, 2016, 05:07:24 PM
That can't be the whole ship.  In the left side of the object we see what are possibly thrusters.  You would need those in other corners of the ship but they're not there.  If they're going with a similar design to the ships as to the Nostromo and Prometheus, that would mean 4 landing thrusters.  one in each corner.

It'll be a small 1:1 of the ship that is enhanced digitally in post.

That's right. It will be similar to the photo below in which they only built the Prometheus garage/hanger and lower landing struts/claws and then later digitally added the rest of the Prometheus ship in post.

(https://www.avpgalaxy.net/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net%2Fhphotos-ak-prn1%2F736062_465330466837953_1695156894_o.jpg&hash=45102c8adc8960e6744162e8b6a4b2d1b41b5e37)

Same story below, they only built a small section of the Juggernaut, the rest was all CGI:

What we see in the Corporal's leaked picture is basically the airlock which needs to be physically built 1:1 since people will be walking in and out of it or otherwise interacting with it in some fashion.

It's sitting very low to the ground though, so it could very likely be a dropship or shuttle from the Covenant.

Ship decor is certainly not finished, we will wait the next photo (Corporal) !!

Obviously this is a small part on a human scale and the rest of ship will be digital. This is the best way for excellent visual in first plan and background.

I was thinking the same thing! Did anyone else notice the distinct similarities b/w Ron Cobb's early concept art for the ship ALIEN (I think it was called the 'Snark') and the 'PROMETHEUS' ship?
If anyone is interested in seeing just how much of Prometheus's design stuff was taken from actual early Alien concept-art and the early scripts, you can watch the first chapter of the Alien documentaries on the Anthology and also check out Giger's ALIEN.

Of course, I'm sure a lot of you have done this, but it seems to me that a lot of people I encounter are bothered by a lot o things in Prometheus which were always the intentions of the filmmakers during ALIEN, but wer cut for budget purposes. For instance the humanoid SJ's in suits, the mural, the Pyramid, even the Urns were part of the early drafts of the script...

The reason I bring this up is that I'm expecting a lot of the design elements and ideas from the ALIEN: ENGINEERS script to make their way into COVENANT.
We already have heard of the ALIEN with the transparent skin, and this big scene Ridley has planned. I'm kinda thinking that's going to be the SEX-BURSTER and the proto-alien with the transparent skin that can shrink its mass to squeeze through walls and stuff, as depicted in Spaiht's original ENGINEERS script.

Thoughts?

In Spaiht's earlier scripts Halloway gave birth to a proto-chestburster when he and Watts (Shaw) were getting their love on.

************ALIEN ENGINEERS SPOILER ************

In the ALIEN ENGINEERS script, there is an actual chestburster scene, where Holloway is having sex with Shaw and it triggers all these tentacles to start bursting out of his torso.

Personally, I didn't find it to be terribly great, but if Scott says this should be 'HARD R' - there it is!

Ridley Scott has a vision. If you listen to the audio commentary of Alien or read the interviews of Scott in the 80's, he always wanted to make a film about the space jockey, the origins of Alien, which is why it's always inspired by the original movie. And he is right to take back old concepts because he worked with the best artists of science fiction on Alien.

There are so many opportunities on this Paradise, and we must not forget that two other films are planned. Ridley preparing something big.

I like the idea of underwater facilities or temples, but I think that ship (airlock)
we see on this photo is in fact sinking... :-[

Also, I dont think we ll see "sex burster"... They showed publicly all unused concept arts from Prometheus,
so I think it would be stupid to simply copy that unused material in Covenant.

You know, it could very well be tilted on an angle as if it were sinking.  Those thrusters are not vertical.  Mind you neither were they on the Nostromo.

Indeed. I had always envisioned the Engineer homeworld as a huge, homogenious Gigeresque mass. This said, I was quite shocked/surprised when the first filming location reports pointed to such greeny landscapes...Still, I think we can expect with some security that there will be facilities or temples.

All of this stuff with The Predator being an "event film" and Carrie Henn's tweet and Alien-day and Blomkamp's Alien and this being a trilogy and Fox losing Star Wars to Disney... Im thinking they are hoping to push this franchise to its apex...

As I understand it, it's not that hidden. If you're local to it we'd appreciate any info or other pictures you maybe able to snap.

I am prepared to sign things.

Exclusive interview with Alien: Covenant actor inbound.

Possible long ranged shot at the same structure (left hand side of the picture)? They look similarly shaped but too far distance to be really sure.

Have you noticed that the ship is named P-01?
As the RT-01 rover, it may be just one of many vehicles of the expedition!

Thanks for this scoop and thanks Eighth Passenger for the tribute to Ron Cobb.
At last a great project for Ridley Scott, hopefully orders of magnitude greater than his pedestrian Martian, which he would have been better off leaving Drew Goddard to direct.
To complement the Cobb gallery I thought it would be interesting to include this scarcely-seen concept design of the Nostromo which you can find in Mike Reccia's From Sketch to Screen published by Strange Light, a must for any SFX and model making fan. Has it ever been reproduced anywhere ? In don't think so, quite astonishing as this is pretty much the final design. It is worth mentioning that roncobb.net is operational again, after years of waiting there's plenty of marvellous stuff to feast upon over there.
I hadn't heard of Wayne Haag before. Who are the concept designers on this one ? I wouldn't be surprised if David Levy and Ben Procter were in on it once again.

Honestly, i saw this pic and instantly thought of the E.E.V. crash landing from Alien 3. This shuttle or whatever it is seems to be tilted in a way that indicates it didn't land correctly. Perhaps the colonist ship was attacked in space by some kind of engineer defense system and was forced down causing the colonists to use life boats to survive? Also, if the colonist ship is named Covenant(sorry if this has been discussed) then could this ship be carrying people who are trying to escape persecution of some kind? Perhaps people of religion like Shaw who'll also have their faith tested? Or it could be a group like The Rage before they became such. Wait...was'nt it mentioned there were ships apart of that convoy that disappeared? If they were unnamed, one could possibly be the Covenant? Got some reading to do but that'd be a surprising connection  :o

Damn, well thanks for saving me some time. Wonder if Scott will end up retconning The Rage War? Fun idea though, for a moment i thought this shuttle thing could be the life boat from the end of Prometheus at a different angle and the lake and greenery were seeing could be the product of the black goo similar to what was presented in Fire and Stone.

A crash landing might be a good action sequence and plot device to start the film off.

This is the part where they are planning a shared universe with the Terminator isn't it?

Skynet being this ultimate destroyer of life, so David counters Skynet's plan by going back even further and creating life so he can keep on creating John Connor despite Skynet's attempts to destroy him.

Which means, Skynet kept going after the wrong people! It's not the Connors they should be targeting, but the Weylands!

Same, I am very excited to see what these new films will have in store for the franchise.

I'm very much eager to see where they're going with it. I just hope this one is a massive step-up. We really need it.

I agree, I'd love to see something big pop up for the franchise.

Prometheus opened up many new doors for the expanded universe, so I hope the sequels do the same.

I dunno, tropical sandy beaches seems a little bit on the nose I think. But personally I would consider New Zealand a true paradise over a a beach with palm trees.
Title: Re: Updated! First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!
Post by: Enoch on Apr 02, 2016, 04:19:40 PM
I never related beaches and palms with Paradise. Even the "descriptions" of Paradise never mentioned palms or beaches, so New Zealand's landscape is in my opinion closest thing to Heaven or Paradise... with certain dark elements to it. I expect to see some Gigeresque or Gutalin architecture designs and some very creepy shots! ::)

Do you guys remember this Ridley Scott interview:

Quote"Have you ever read Paradise Lost, by Milton? In a funny kind of way, it's an interesting basis for the darkness of [Prometheus 2]. Where the good-looking guy, who is evil as s–t, gets all the girls and goes to the nightclubs. The other guy, who is not quite as good-looking, is boring as hell and stays home.

Good looking guy - someone or something we think is good but it isnt (Maybe Engineers, maybe David, maybe humans themselves)
Other guy - someone or something we think is bad but it isnt afterall so bad...

I m pretty sure we ll see some new being that is above Engineers... and that creature will look bad and its actions will look bad, but at the end something will happen that will change human perspective...

So who created Xeno and why is not a single answer but multiple answers that have multiple meanings!

From one of the local yokels:

Someone asked if there was an insider or something... I have it on good authority that part of the set is very near Milford Sound airport. As such this would mean it would be viewable with a decent lens from the main tourist part of the area.

And legally Fox can't do anything about most of these photo's (except for the really close-up one) since one can claim they are merely photographs of Mitre Peak with the film set being incidental.

Here's another one from a tourist:

The jungle environment (assuming its an earth-like jungle environment) could be a tricky thing.  I found the Aliens looked very out of place in the woods in AVP:R.  I find that is the case whenever they are openly outdoors.  They strike me as critters that are always hiding in the dark.  (Not sure if we saw any of the Aliens in the forest there, it could have been just the Facehuggers).

If its a Giger jungle, I'm all for it...

It doesn't look otherworldly, to me. It looks like Earth. Why? Because there's plant-life. You want to know what looks not of this Earth? Barren planets.  :D

That being said, it's very pretty. But having it be purely organic and bright and nice to look at isn't exactly in line with the dirty, dark Alien lens of the universe. Perhaps they're going for a wild, "sylvan scene," like Milton's Paradise Lost. But I don't really want it to be literal. And if they have a monster hunting people in a big, wild jungle, it starts to sound more like Predator and less like Alien. Honestly if you're going to try something incongruous with the Alien type of setting, I'd rather have them do the film in a field of poppies, like The Wizard of Oz.

I'm worried this film will be too big and epic in scope, and not in the right direction. One of Prometheus' flaws was that it felt too big and amazing for what it really is: a monster movie. And this made it feel very detached from the darker, claustrophobic direction the original Alien movie had.

And then on top of it there's all the talk of "gods" - the thing which is really on the nose. It's an Alien movie, for pete's sake. The creature itself comes from an artist that uses sexual and sometimes satanic imagery. How it became something linked with human history and "gods" is beyond me. Yes, I do want to see the Engineers, but can they do it without being overly grand and silly about the whole thing? I wish they'd just keep it dark, sinister and claustrophobic.

A Giger-scape would be cool to see. The beautiful mountains in these pics, however, not so much.

Ive thought that an overgrown misty, fog filled rainforest would make for a great HIVE-setting too. Still, if I have to choose b/w the two, I'll take Giger landscapes and the other side of the mirror AKA Dark Seed-land, anyday.

Agreed guys. It is supposed to be a dark, dangerous world.

There has to be a good reason to why the Engineers built an underground world despite having a Paradise on the surface (so the living planet is a nice idea) and to why David is the sole inhabitant of the planet. Did they all die there, did they move to another planet (supposedly a bit of both) ?.. So many questions that need to be answered  ;D

What is a Gigeresque landscape exactly? (Guys have u concept art or pics ?)Yes, I love to see the influence of Giger's work in Covenant, hopefully in caves.
But is really possible to make a planet Gigeresque ?? I doubt, don't forget that his work has a sexual/morbid connotation (too hard for public) and it's not easy to imagine and reinvent piece like that. That may be why nobody since 1979 has wanted to call him, too sinister for a studio film.
But his minimal participation in Prometheus was excellent, the cave was unbelievable and "never seen" ! That's why I'm optimistic, Ridley wants to show unusual things, and Paradise will be surprising. Beautiful in appearance and probably horrible in the dark.

Quote from: PsyKore on Apr 04, 2016, 02:57:38 AM

But Prometheus is not Alien, isn't just a monster movie. It's pure science fiction film that just tries to move away from the original and offer unusual things. This is not a flaw, ambition is different.
However Covenant will be an Alien film, so I expect that we find the stifling atmosphere of the first. As I think from the beginning, the caves will surprise us visually.

If Ridley Scott works 16 weeks in a studio, it is precisely to create something that is not found on Earth.
Have you watched Legend of him? He creates an incredible forest and even an artificial sun in a studio. Ridley can create absolutely everything in the studio. Be patient, we have no idea of what really happens!

Well, the term Paradise indicates it will be a lush planet full of life. It wouldn't be so much of a paradise if it was completely void of any life. It doesn't have to be xenomorphs stalking people in a jungle - I agree, that wouldn't look right and that's more for Predator. That was a big problem with Predators, the jungle just looked something out of Earth. Instead they should have been aiming for something like Avatar style scenery.

It is definitely not easy to reinvent Gigeresque landscape but all of his work is not necessarily related to sexual/morbid connotions. Personnaly, I'm not fond of his too explicit sexual drawings (look at my avatar, I cut out the d**k which was on the tail). You can google for example 'Biomechanical Landscape I,II,IIa'
I think it is at an acceptable level and it probably shouldn't offend so many people.

Well, from whose point of view? I'm sure a xenomorph's idea of Paradise is inside a host.

Semantics aside, I do agree that it being void of life would seem odd. But what if that's the point? I think if they went the AtMoM approach and had a place that was originally pastoral, until things went to pot, that'd be a cool way to go about it. Ruins in the jungle haunted by a sinister presence... or the city of the Old Ones haunted by evil Shoggoths. Good stuff. I mean, Antarctica was originally warmer and had plant life, didn't it? A similar approach with Covenant would be fun. Except, more the ruins-in-the-jungle approach. I'm down with that. Plus, certain Central American gods, like Quetzalcoatl, were steeped in the lore of life, death, and human sacrifice. It kind of fits with the alien lore, from a certain point of view. It certainly reminds me of Prometheus' approach to humans and myth, and I actually kind of liked that.

Oh, that is a good shout! I would love to see some Jockey ruins overgrown by jungle too.

I think I just want to see a meld of all the lively green and the machinery life of Giger's biomechanical.

Ooh... that's a nice close-up Corporal!

This at least makes it clear that the ship is not canted off to the side. The deck is clearly horizontal, so it's not sinking into the water.

Could most likely be a shuttle, the engines would be too small for a colony ship (unless they are supposed to be maneuvering thrusters) and it's sitting too low to the ground for it to be a large ship.

Can see some CO2 tanks as well so there will probably be lots of practical smoke & steam effects.

Some actors joined the film crew in New Zealand!
Ben Rigby and Demian Bichir have posted pictures of Fiordland landscapes on Insta.
Alistair Johns (@Aligogs) (costume department) is also present.

It's the Prometheus lifeboat where we last left it, except the planet has started to terraform / evolve around it following the release of the genetic accelerant material in the Engineer's pyramid/s. So life forms on the planet will have evolved at the same rapid rate as well.

Is it truly wise to put stuff like this up on the front page? It's all well and good saying 'spoiler alert' but it's hard to avoid when it's right there on the main page with 'explosion seen on set of Alien Covenant.' I know explosions of spaceships etc will be expected in the movie but still I'm sure there are plenty out there that would like to go in totally blind. Just my two cents.
Title: Re: First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!

I understand your concerns but it's news, interesting news, and our duty to report it. There's very few ways for me to report it without it being somewhat spoilery.

I hope that doesn't come off as sounding dick-ish.
Title: Re: First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!
Post by: HuDaFuK on Apr 11, 2016, 10:05:48 AM
It's not exactly a huge spoiler anyway. All the Alien films have had explosions. It's not like it gives away any plot points other than something will go boom at some point.
Title: Re: First On Location Pictures of Alien: Covenant!
Post by: XENOMORPHOSIS on Apr 11, 2016, 10:09:54 AM
Just like HuDaFuK said, the Alien movies are notable for having explosion sequences, the list goes as follows

The Nostromo self detonates at the end of Alien,

Hadley's Hope has a nuclear meltdown at the end of Aliens,

When the Alien explodes at the end of Alien 3"not sure if that exactly counts"

When the Auriga crashes into earth at the end of Alien Resurrection.

AVP if we count cross overs, when Scar Predator's wrist bomb blows up the pyramid and under ground ice cavern.

Two instances in AVP R where wolf detonates the remains of the crashed Predator scouter ship, and the nuclear explosion destroying all of Gunnison county after the Xenomorph infestation.

And lastly Prometheus when the said ship crashes into the Engineer's Juggernaut to prevent it form reaching earth.

So we'd come to expect an explosions at this point. Michaels Bay's probably joygasming over this.  :P

No, I get it, but I think you should certainly consider some way to try and camouflage it. I get people want spoilers and they should be confined to a dedicated thread. But others will want a fresh experience seeing the movie but now by simply logging on the website they will be spoiled. Now we already seemingly know the titular ship of the movie, or part of it, is going to be destroyed. What's gonna be next? The first reveal of the new creatures? Actor stunt doubles being sliced and diced? At this rate, people are gonna have a majority of the mysteries of the movie spoiled for them simply by logging on - and many log on for plenty of other things other than Covenant. I know ship explosions are part and parcel of the franchise, that's not the point. But inevitably other and bigger things will be revealed soon.

I appreciate your duty is to report these things and provide the info, but at the same time you should have a duty to protect those that want to remain spoiler free. Having it slap-bang on the main page with descriptions of what is happening makes it next to impossible to avoid, that's all I'm saying.

I don't mean to sound like a dick either, I just feel it's something you should consider moving forward as more about the movie is inevitably revealed.

I always consider it, my friend. I guarantee you that. There was just very little to camouflage this around.

I could change the featured images backs to their old ones, without the explosions but I don't feel like it would save much considering all there is to the news is "there was an explosion".

I don't think "There's an explosion" is any more a spoiler than "There's a spaceship." We don't even know if that is the main ship, do we? Or if the scene will even end up in the film. This tells us nothing.

Blame them for building a set at an easily accessible location!

I figure once they're done filming around here, we'll stop seeing as many pictures.

Tropic Thunder is like my Catcher in the Rye.  Love that film!  It grew on me too.  At first I thought it absurd, but then watching it over and over again you appreciate the subtly nuanced absurdity.  Its such a rich film.  Brilliant.

I also didn't really appreciate stiller or Jack Black for that matter but that film gave me a new appreciation for all of those actors.  They were all great and broke out of their molds.  Especially Tom Cruise.

Hmmm... I am wondering if this isn't going to basically be Alien meets Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness.

Like, for instance, they are moving up this river to reach David, and he is a-wall and basically has a whole Dr Moreau thing going on.

Just a shot in the dark.

There's definitely a similarity in style which is cool but I don't think it's from the Prometheus.

I'm finding it difficult to find proof that it is from the Prometheus, other than the fact that it says P-01 on it. I just find it difficult to imagine how a chunk of the Prometheus would manage to escape lv223's gravity when the ship exploded so close to the surface. But then again, this is the sequel to Prometheus.
I think it more likely that it's simply part of the ship that this new crew of explorers used to get to "uncharted paradise", but is in fact a planet inhabited by loads of davids.

Also, it just occurred to me, does anyone else think the deacon could've stowed away on the engineer ship shaw took? I mean, it never really shows for certain whether or not shaw had taken off before the deacon hatched. Only that it showed shaw taking off in a separate scene just before the scene with the deacon. So, there is actually a bit of an ambiguity here. PLUS, Ridley said there was gonna be every type of xeno in Alien: Covenant and what are the odds of there being 2 deacons created? Not high I imagine.

I hated the Deacon scene. Felt so tacked-on. That said, I think I'd be more annoyed if they just left it hanging and never followed it up in the sequel(s).

But in the shot below it's quite clearly on dry land. I suppose it depends on the tide. Or otherwise the set was moved. Do you know when those aerial shots were taken?

What I'm saying is that with the tide, the ship could be in the water at some point during the day and on land on another time of day.  Anybody know if this sort of thing happens in this area?  It seems like it might.  A satellite image from Google maps can clarify that for us if we get them from different moments.  It would also be interesting to point out the exact location of the ship on the google map, but so far I can't seem to pinpoint the spot.  Anyone?

QuoteAnybody know if this sort of thing happens in this area?

The sound is connected to the ocean, so yes.

QuoteIt would also be interesting to point out the exact location of the ship on the google map, but so far I can't seem to pinpoint the spot.  Anyone?

It's just a little north of the north-western section of the airport runway. The cruise boat harbour would be to the north-east.

You'd be surprised how big an explosion they can make these days without actually damaging anything around it. Some of those recent shots look a little singed, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility it survived intact.

Hahaaha, Weyne is great. God is responsible for the environment of Milford Sound and Wayne for that craft ;D (He intentionally mentioned God in that reply ;)). He wasnt so satisfied with Prometheus story, and what about Covenant...? We expect that Covenant is going to look awesome just as Prometheus (or even better), but story is our main concern. He just said that Covenant is not what we expect... and what we expect the question is? ;D :D

QuoteHere is some nerd gold for all of my movie buff friends out there. Whilst in Milford Sound, we came across this strange spaceship sitting in the mist. As it turns out, this spaceship is the set for the newest movie in the Alien franchise and sequel to Prometheus, Alien: Covenant! And yes, they were filming. Mr. Ridley Scott and Mr. Michael Fassbender are somewhere in these photos!

Thank you for this  ;)

Benjamin Rigby returned to New Zealand for several days. But part of the cast seems to be in the studio in Sydney.
It's strange (or not).

I hope a little something for tomorrow. Concept art , photo, poster ... just talking about the movie!

Can't be sure. I'm not sure when a lot of these were taken.

According to Mara Redfield (one of the first crewmembers I started following) they are no longer filming in New Zealand.

I split the patch discussion off and merged it with the other thread. Please continue over there.  :)

I'm sure the crew is not there now but apparently Milford Sound get hit by a 4.7 earthquake yesterday. It was a short one and doesn't sound like there was any damage.

They probably get about one earthquake a week there. Usually around the high 3's. Was one or two while they were shooting there and I think there was a 5 a couple of weeks before they started shooting there.

Awesome, the sound stage sets felt positively huge in Prometheus. I just felt that they were a little empty-looking inside the derelict ship, itself. I imagine they were much larger than Alien's derelict, but I much prefer them using tricks (kids in space suits) and cool lighting (with Ridley wafting purfume around with cardboard sheets) and darkness to achieve something otherwordly and spooky. I liked Prometheus enough, but I'd rather have the ship and temple not be empty with only holograms to fill up the space.

Sidenote: I didn't really like the holograms or the ghosts. The Orrery wasn't terrible, but the ghost Engineers were too grainy.

I apologize for the false joy...I had never seen this before!

And it's amazing to see such impressive scenery for a film of 79'! Alien ... best of all.

But I trust for a fantastic scenery in Covenant.
