Maybe the first thing the newborn Alien does is finds a place to start the hive in, the hive material then absorbing its surroundings to use as building material for itself and the Alien.

They may simply get everything they need to grow to full size from their host.

What about the mass?

Guess they just use it more efficiently.

Could maybe work along the lines of compressed air.  If a submarine has sunk in shallow water the submariners can take a lungful of compressed air from over head pipes, then blow it out as it expands as they swim to the surface.  Whatever the Aliens take from the host expands as they grow.  Just guessing.

It doesn't eat per se (at least if you ask me). It (the Alien) is a living battery (see: acid for blood) that needs to recharge (by hibernation) once in a while. While hibernating they accumulate energy from siphoned matter -  you know, mumbo jumbo gumbo like that.

Dark matter, in fact.

Alright, not "in fact", but that would be badass.

The more aliens there are, the more dark matter is consumed, and the slower the universe expands until it completely stops...so, if that were the case, the aliens consuming dark matter would actually stop the universe from expanding so much that it tears itself apart, thus saving every creature in the universe.

So aliens are...our saviours?
