Title: Official ALIEN Literature 2012 Reissues List (UPDATED w/ New Details!)
Post by: Cvalda on Feb 14, 2012, 10:33:29 AM
Seeing as Fox is going to milk the PROMETHEUS cashcow for all it's worth, they are rereleasing some of the more notable, OOP publications associated with the ALIEN universe in May, in addition to the Art of Prometheus book in June. Here's a quick guide to what's being rereleased. I'll periodically update it as more info becomes available. If anyone finds anything, ie cover art and such, post it here!

Hardback you say?
Mine is getting a little weak on the spine, but do I need a second one? Can I part with the original?

Hardback with a slipcover!!! :P Apparently all the art has been remastered direct from the original artists. Or something. I'm sure it'll be cool ;)

It'll depend on the price I suppose. Maybe someone will be nice enough to do up comparison shots between the two editions. If it's a significant improvement and it's not crazy-expensive, I'll probably do it. Otherwise, I'll deal with what I've got. :)

Interesting, you should probably send this info to Corporal Hicks so he can post it in the News section?  Do you have a source or a link to Fox saying this in a press release?

You might want to sell your copy now if you plan on getting the reissue, before resell prices plummet in a few months once everyone finds out the book will no longer be OOP :P

Apparently, the art has all been restored direct from the artist's studio. Someone asked him about it on Facebook, but he said he couldn't talk about it yet as they were still working on it. I guess we'll find out soon enough how extensive the remastering is.

Book Of Alien is a bit dated now in that the info in it has been repeated ad nauseum over the last 30+ years, but the others would be worth picking up.

I'd say it's still an essential purchase for any ALIEN fan that doesn't have it already. All the concept art, behind the scenes photos, etc.

Amazon has just released the cover art for the paperback reissue of ALIEN: The Illustrated Story!

I'd tend to agree but the photos and art are all available on DVD and Blu-Ray too.

And that new CMTM cover is crap.

Yeah, nice unqualified touch.
This image creeps up everywhere like cancer, just because it turns up in high-resolution on google.
And maybe gives us a clue on what Fox's press files look like at the moment.

And I am not that shure how much the family truck represents the Colonial Marine-technology either.  :P

I'll do a review and comparison of it when my copy comes in and let everyone know if it's worth it. At any rate, it damn well better be, as I already sold my first edition copy last week in anticipation for this "remastered" reissue. :P

I could also sell my Technical Manual on ebay for $32 or so, and since all my competitors are selling it for $50 at least, I'm sure I can get a sale before the new version comes out.  However, I'm still thinking on whether or not I should do it; the two books will pretty much be the same thing, right?  Only the newer edition will be "better".

Well, it'll certainly be "newer" :P I don't expect the technical manual to change much at all. It wouldn't really warrant the same treatment that the Illustrated Story is apparently getting. May as well hold on to the one you have now, unless the new cover really tickles your fancy.

That's the way it looks, yes. There's been no release stating that the other books will be enhanced in any way, so it's likely they're just straight re-issues.

Hmm, I'd still be savign money though as I probably wouldn't have spent $40 on it if I knew a newer and cheaper version were coming out, but I'll think on it.  My version is rarer and harder to find and I got it at $10 off the regular price.

I would like it if the Tech Manual got an update. Shit, if given the opportunity I'd jump at the chance to write that update. There's been new tech introduced in some of the video games, and some of the stuff name-dropped in the tech manual has been used in the games.

There's a slight chance the cover art may change. They'll for sure fix the hideous Photoshop job on the "ALIENS" logo.

Or at least they'd better.

Some updates on ALIEN: The Illustrated Story.

The paperback version is up for preorder on Amazon US & UK, and it is very affordable (currently $8.18!). The hardback "Artist's Edition" is another matter entirely: it is not up for order on Amazon US yet, but the UK site does have it, and its list price is £39.99! The difference in page count is: paperback -- 64 pages, hardback -- 72 pages. What's on those extra pages in the "Artist's Edition" I wonder? And considering the list price for the Limited Edition hardback version of PROMETHEUS: The Art of the Film is $74.99, I wonder what extra stuff will be included with that--if any?

How do you know it's the "official" facebook page for that book.  Normally I check the Info section of a facebook page to make sure if it's official or not and I don't see any links or bio that ties it to an official anything. :(

The moderator of the official facebook page dropped a hint that the Hardback Artist's Edition may be comprised of the original black and white ink panels. Hmm. If that's the case I may just go with the paperback version, which is likely just a straight reprint of the colored version. What can I say? I like da purrty cullers  :P

The page is updated and moderated by Walter Simonson, the original illustrator. It's linked to his official Facebook page and some of the updates are even signed off by him. It's official, as far as that capacity goes.

For those unsure, an "Artist's Edition" is something that's been cropping up some in comic book circles lately, and what it is precisely is the original uncolored, sometimes un-inked (depending on the artist) pages as they originally appeared fresh off the artist's desk. That means the pages for this artist's edition will be in the same size as the original art (significantly larger than the original paperback release), and, judging from the fact that the images on Simonson's facebook page are inked, probably black and white inked, on extremely high-quality paper to reproduce the art as faithfully as possible.

If you're really into comic art, especially stuff in the old style, these Artist's Editions have been a real treat so far - very much looking forward to another excuse to mix my comic habit with my Alien habit.

Hope this clears up any confusion as to what the Artist's Edition is - any further questions, I'll make an effort to check back here.

Based on the hints that have been dropped, I think you're right. In that case, given the fact that the Artist's Edition is going to be outrageously expensive (the Amazon UK listprice is £39.99--Jesus) and that I like the purrty colors of the normal edition (does that make me some sort of comic book heathen? :P), I think I'll just go with the standard paperback reissue, which is currently under $10 on Amazon. Not a bad tradeoff considering I just recently sold my original '79 first edition for $30. 8)

HOLY SHIT!!!  The UK price is worth £39.99?!?!  I love the Alien franchise, but I am very hesitant to pay that much for a book that I already have.  Is there any chance that the price will go down if I wait?  Or will it instead go up?

That's the list price though, preorder price is currently at £23.99. Whenever Titan gets off its ass and updates Amazon US with the US list price, etc, I imagine Amazon's sell price will be around $30.

Quick update--one of the admins for the ALIEN: The Illustrated Story Facebook page has clarified what's going on with the reissues, or at least how they're being remastered. All the artwork, both the original B&W and color, has been completely rescanned piece by piece from the original artists archives, with the text separate. Sounds like they're rebuilding the entire graphic novel from scratch.

I guess this means the artwork is going to definitely look much better than the original 1979 printing, especially with modern scanning and printing techniques. So looks like we're getting a definite upgrade! Hopefully they don't change the formatting too much from the original.

FINALLY! Details about the Artist's Edition have been released!
Per the official Facebook page and this link: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/03/10/alien-the-artists-edition/ (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/03/10/alien-the-artists-edition/)
QuoteWith Prometheus on the way, they are replicating the [Artist's Edition] format for themselves, with Alien: The Illustrated Story: The Artists' Edition, now renamed from "The Original Edition" to closer mirror the IDW editions. The volume will reprint the original art of the Heavy Metal Archie Goodwin/Walt Simonson adaptation of Ridley Scott's Alien at the 14″ x 17″ size.

The volume will also include colour tryout pages, the Goodwin script, an interviews with Simonson as well as his signature on every copy. Titan are also making the original story available in colour paperback at a... slightly more affordable price as Alien – The Illustrated Story.

That's right--these are very limited edition, and the price is so high because every copy is personally autographed. Note the original color version will only be sold separately in paperback.

Easily one of the best comic book adaptations ever produced.  They really nailed the likenesses panel after panel.

Compare it to Earth War, Alien3, Newt's Tale or Resurrection and they pale in comparison.

Unfortunately, it seems the hardback Artist's Edition is going to be largely an exclusively UK edition. There will only be VERY limited imports to the States through local comic shops, distributed by Diamond Comic Distributors. You can expect those to retail at a very premium price, as well. No news on whether the rest of the world will have any imports at all yet.

Hi,

I'm the admin for the "Alien-TIS" facebook page and am responsible for scanning and restoring the artwork for the Titan reprints.

The "Original Art Edition" can be ordered right now at the Amazon.co.uk site, but you didn't have to live overseas to order it. We have plenty of american fans that have already ordered a copy through them. It is true that the only domestic outlet will be Diamond via comic shops and the like.

The new color reprint edition will be available as a mass market edition and is currently up for order at both the US and UK Amazon sites. It will also be available via Diamond.

If you have any questions, please feel free to fire away and I'll do my level-best to answer them in a timely manner.

Also, more info and any new info is posted first over at the Official FB page - http://www.facebook.com/AlienTIS (http://www.facebook.com/AlienTIS)

Thanks for the interest in this reprint project.

I'm thinking about getting the Artist's Edition, but $37 is a lot of money.  Originally, the highest price I was going to go for would be $30 and I don't know whether or not I should dish out the extra cash for the Artist's Edition.  If I do get the Artist's Edition, it will be more for the fact that I'm a fan of the Alien series than anything else as I have never bought an Artist's Edition of any kind of comic book and thus have no idea what truly makes these copies so special.

I'm still recovering from buying Aliens: More Than Human when I' could've gotten Omnibus 4 with Berserker in it. :'(  Hoodwinked by those goddamned Swanland covers.

I think all the original artwork is autographed, so that's a lot of pages in the book that will bear the artist's signature.

Also, I get your pain about More Than Human.  It's so sad that what was supposed to be a triumphant return was a dramatic failure for the comic series. :(  I hope you eventually did get Omnibus 4, tho.

The book itself will be autographed. All the artwork is the original black & white ink illustrations done by the artist before coloring. It'll be quite a collector's item.

I can't afford it, so I'll just be getting the paperback reprint with the color version. I like da purrty colors :P

Aaron - Sadly, Archie passed away back in '99. I work in Walter's studio so that's how I got the gig to do the art scanning and restoration, as I scanned all the artwork for the recent Marvel THOR Omnibus reprint and some of the artwork for IDW's THOR Artist Edition. Walter is extremely busy drawing Avengers for Marvel currently, but be assured he will be signing off on all portions of the finished product to make sure we get the best book published that we can. We will also have the original creative director for the book and letterer, John Workman involved. He is very excited to see this back in print, as are we all.

SM - When the original book was printed, all of the lettering was done on a separate pieces of drafting vellum for each page, as some of the dialogue was to be printed in blue, and it was easier to have the lettering done that way for printing. Well, fast forward 30 years, printing is done somewhat differently and it's easier to have all the artwork setup and finalized going into the print process. So, I had to re-composite the lettering digitally back onto the artwork for the B&W and color editions. Also, the coloring in the original printing ended up being kinda muddy and the blacks were a little washed out in places. We have scanned in all the color artwork fresh and will adjust things so that it will be printed in the manner that was supposed to be originally released back in '79 but for some reason, did not turn out that way.

What makes them so special, is that if you've ever seen original artwork compared to the printed version, there is usually a significant size difference as artwork is generally reduced by 35% for comics as a rule. The "Artist editions" print the original artwork at it's full original size, that means the pages in this book will 14" x 17", the same size as the original artboards. Plus with all the extra and new material and interviews, that's what makes them so "special". Also, the IDW edition start at US$100 a copy, so the price for the Alien book is a considerable bargain. If you are not one to care about such artistic matters, then the regular color reprint should hold you just fine.

I doubt if I'll get the Artist's Edition, as £39.99 is a bit steep and I can't justify it, but I'll probably get the 'ordinary' version which is only £7.47, to replace my battered old copy which is about to fall apart. :-[
I like the old cover design with the Nostromo caught in vines or tentacles, although I am not sure where vines or tentacles come in in the story, but the new design with the Alien creature is pretty eye-catching.

At least we'll have copies that don't have the shitty version of the cover.

Although if the reprint has actual new content I wouldn't mind dealing with the shitty cover.

I did an email interview with Lee Brimmicombe-Wood a few years back and he said he did some designs and specs for things like the EEV from Alien 3, but then said the files were lost on a computer somewhere.

How cool would it be to get him to find that and put it in this new version? It's not gonna happen, but that'd be the only way I'd consider buying the book again.
Title: Re: Official ALIEN Literature 2012 Reissues List (UPDA...
Post by: Xenomrph on Mar 19, 2012, 10:15:50 AM
I seem to recall that he wasn't allowed to use Alien3 stuff in the book for some reason because of some licensing thing, that they'd only licensed 'Aliens' specifically but not any of the other movies. The only reason the Nostromo or Narcissus are in the book is technically because they're in 'Aliens' as well, and while the events of 'Alien3' are hinted at in the final chapter they're not directly referenced by name.

Was the Nostromo even in the book? I haven't read that thing in a few years so I don't remember much. I just remember I was too young to read it when I did; I'd probably enjoy it more now.

So...the Alien 3 licensing explanation thing doesn't apply to Alien? Strange loophole there.
Title: Re: Official ALIEN Literature 2012 Reissues List (UPDATED w/ New Details!)
Post by: SM on Mar 20, 2012, 01:48:05 AM
I dunno if there was a licensing thing.  He talks about events in Alien and makes more vague references to events in Alien3 (including the EEV).  Licensing was an issue early on with artwork, hence the proliferation of Harry Harris stuff over licensed stills.

I believe the name might be up on the screen in the ICC inquest which was the loophole they used.

I recall reading some sort of interview with Lee Brimmicombe-Wood where he mentioned it was a licensing thing which was why 'Alien3' isn't referenced directly.

Edit-- yeah, he mentions it in this interview (http://www.alienexperience.com/forum/index.php?topic=2848.0) but I also recall him mentioning it in some other interview as well.

QuoteQ: How did Fox get involved, and at what point did this occur?

A: I presume Fox got involved when my publisher negotiated the license. Much to my chagrin I soon discovered that Boxtree had only bought a license for the second movie. That was frustrating, as I'd hoped to fill out the book with material from the first and third movies. However, when Fox's licensing division in Beverley Hills began to read drafts of the manual they had kittens. A whole section of the final chapter referenced the events of the third movie, and went into all sorts of detail about Alien morphology. That had to be scrapped because it wasn't covered by the license. In the end I had to cut the final chapter down by half and restrict mention of the third flick to an oblique reference.

Fortunately, Fox were prepared to stretch things a little with regards to the first movie. As various events and items from Alien, such as the Nostromo, were mentioned in the sequel, I was allowed to drop those into the book. But a big article on the escape pod from the third movie, done originally for the magazine, was left out.

Agreed. Aside from the Alien being from AvP, the book looks like a guide to construction equipment instead of military technology. Why would they put the powerloader and ATV thing on the front instead of maybe...a gun?

And yeah, I spent $40 on my copy on ebay maybe 10 years ago and I'm not ever going to lose sight of it.

I'm not sure I like the new promo art either.  It looks like a crumpled piece of paper.  But if that is a faded retro looking dust-jacket over a cloth-bound book then I am all for it.  (cloth bound with dust-jacket is higher quality than just a stamped cover which what the old promo art hinted at.  But I am hoping for a better, cleaner looking cover than that new image indicates.

Why not?

I think it's great that they're reissuing these out of print books. I got the CM technical manual way back when it first came out. It's a great book that goes into TONS of detail. I've still got my copy so I won't bother getting the reissue, especially if it's a straight reprint with only an updated cover.

Finally got to take a look at the Tech Manual this morning. The cover art is the original artwork, not that new artwork with the xeno from Alien Resurrection. I was really pleased to see that.  As for the book's content, I've never had a chance to read this, so I couldn't tell you if there are any differences.  But it's been reported that it's a straight reprint, so I highly doubt it.

QuoteHey Everyone! From what we've heard. there's been confusion concerning the different editions of Alien: The Illustrated Story by Archie Goodwin and Walter, slated for release this fall. Since I'm a member of the Titan Books editorial team, I thought I might be able to shed some light.

There will be two hardcover "Original Art" editions, printed the size of the original artwork (14" x 17"). These editions will showcase the black-and-white artwork exactly as it was drawn, down to the finest detail

One will be distributed by Diamond Comic Distribution, signed and numbered, limited to 2,300 copies. It was conceived to be exclusive to comic book stores--a boost to independent retailers who survive based on their ability to offer unique items. There'll be a special signature page, custom-illustrated by Walter, which will only appear in that edition, and it will have a suggested retail price of $75. By keeping the price down, we hope that more of Walter's fans will be able to afford it. It'll even include Archie's original script, kept by Walter since 1979!

Response to the "Original Art" edition was tremendous, and the online retailer Amazon asked for a wide-release edition. Knowing this would reach thousands more fans who would appreciate the Goodwin-Simonson material in all of its glory, Titan agreed, but stipulated that the edition would not be limited or signed--it won't even have the signature page illustration. As far as we know, it has never been solicited as being signed, and while it's got the same suggested retail price, due to Amazon's discount fans will be able to buy it for about $40.

For folks who simply want to read the Ridley Scott story--in full color, no less--there will be two versions of the trade paperback graphic novel, 8-1/2" x 14" trim, each priced at $14.95. One will be exclusive to comic book stores--a perfect replica of the original 1979 edition. It's perfect for comics collectors who want something historic. The other will be a new, 2012 edition of the same graphic novel. available to retailers everywhere, and thus to all fans.

I first ran across Goodwin and Simonson in Detective Comics, where I adored their "Manhunter" stories. On top of that, Walter is one of the nicest guys in comics (as was Archie). So I can't wait to see the new editions of Alien, and I'm really excited that we can share them with as many readers as is humanly possible. From everything I've heard, the books are beautiful. Walter has a lot of fans at Titan, so we're very serious about doing justice to his work (and Archie's). We hope you'll love the results.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
QuoteALIEN: The Illustrated Story release dates -- just got these from Titan.

The remastered color version will be released September 4th, 2012.

The Original Art Edition (unsigned) will be released October 26th, 2012.

The Original Art Edition (signed) will be released October 30th, 2012.

I'm pretty pissed right now, I just found out that amazon won't be giving away the limited edition of the Original Art edition  as originally planned (just a wide release version of it), the limited OA edition will be sold at $75 at specialty stores.  I don't have that kind of money and amazon was selling it at only $40, too.

Darkness would.

Me, not so much.  It was a treasure trove for 20 years before the advent of DVD.  But pretty much everything in it has wound up in some shape or form on DVD or Blu-Ray.  It's nice, to be sure - just don't expect to learn anything new.

A discount on their part however would be good for PR.

It's exactly the same thing.  If something was priced incorrectly, they aren't compelled to sell it at that price.

If a typo sees a new car priced at $2000 rather than $20000, you really think the dealer's going to honour that?

Some places have to actually. I know at some stores, if an item is mismarked, they have to sell it as is. Of course, there's a difference between a few bucks at a store and $18000 at a car dealership, but its the same principle.

Yeah a few bucks and they'll often wear it, but 17 quid for something that costs nearly 44 is stretching things.

I don't know if it depends on the country, but yeah, you can.

In Australia, for example; an item's put back on the wrong shelf where the price is different, then no, you don't get the cheaper price. It's a one-off mistake. Or if one item in a batch is incorrectly labelled, while all the others are at the right price. Manager's discretion. But if every price tag and label explicitly states that something costs "X" and it scans up as more, you get it for "X".

A car being mislabelled for 2k instead of 20k would fall under a one-off "whoops". Marketing the book at 17 rather than 44 quid falls under "We dun goofed, you guys hit paydirt."

I remember not long ago a local airline (Jetstar I think) had some flights advertised online at a ludicrously low price, and I think they caught the mistake just before the tickets went on sale and corrected.  Lots of people predictably squealed like stuck pigs, howling that they should honour the original advertised price.  Airline said no.

Post by: predxeno on Aug 17, 2012, 05:37:12 AM
I think a lot of our opinions in this case depend on our sense of fairness; if an airplane sold tickets at a ludicrously low price that would have many raise an eyebrow, then yes it seems logical that the price should be retracted, but if the tickets were sold at a lower but more reasonable price for the airline (also, in the case of the Alien TIS signed) then I think more people would agree that the airline should honor the original price.

Yeah, well as I said, it'd be nice if they offered a bit of a discount for those who had it on order at the lower price.

Seems like that's not going to happen though.

I just looked it up on Book Depository, and it costs a couple of dollars more (though they do have free delivery).

This book was available for pre-order; the tickets weren't available while they were advertised at the wrong price.

I guess it's different online, or overseas, or whatever. But if it happened here there'd be a hell of a good argument to take it up with the consumer watchdogs.

The latter, I think, so ...

I know where I work we've had situations where catalogues have gone out and we've had to issue retractions on incorrectly priced items, but generally the manager will allow the cheaper price if a customer contests it. If we'd made this blunder I know we'd be honouring the original price for anyone who said anything.

As much as I hate customers who needlessly bitch about price differences when the correction is clearly stated, there's no denying it's a tactic that works more often than not.

My copy of the reprinted ALIEN: The Illustrated Story just came in. Flipped through it--colors are definitely a lot more vivid and the art is sharper than the original 1979 edition. Not all that sorry I parted with the first edition at all, this is a marked improvement. For those who feel all nostalgic for the original cover, though, Titan is releasing another version with the remastered art in a 'facsimile edition' with the original cover (http://www.amazon.com/Alien-Illustrated-Story-Facsimile-Regular/dp/1781165955/)... in a few weeks.

Why they couldn't release all the different editions together at the same time--on the original release date--shall remain a mystery, I guess.

https://www.cheapgraphicnovels.com/product.php?productid=34726 (https://www.cheapgraphicnovels.com/product.php?productid=34726)

I even emailed them asking if it was indeed going to be the signed version, and they sent me this reply back:
"yes the version going to comic shops is the signed version. "

So if you want to get a signed copy, this seems a pretty good bet at a decent price. Normally I wouldn't tell you bastids til after I had already preordered mine (their stock is going to be strictly limited), but I decided I don't wanna pay $71 upfront with tax & shipping for a preorder that's over a month away. So by all means, go for it

So, I've had my OAE for a little over a week now, but just now had a chance to go through it - interesting to note, in the interview with Walt Simonson and John Workman in the back, it's mentioned that the infamous "Alien Box" scene was based on something from a script draft that was shot, but later cut. I find this more than a little hard to believe, and is likely just a factual error, as the validity of that scene being in the book has been brought up before. I'd be interested to know, though, if anyone knows of a script draft that includes this - I've never seen one, but it seems like there's always something new to discover with this film.

I've always figured it was imply their take on the scene (which I can't find in any of the drafts I have).  It's mentioned in the Book of Alien too from memory.
